Why is there an estimated cost attached to setting up a new free tier VM? Do new oracle boot volumes need to pay? You may have noticed a $2 estimated cost per month for boot volumes, even if you are using the free tier. Let's run some tests and check what the results are.
I'd been getting asked this question a lot, so I needed to test it!

I spoke to a support member at Oracle and they said the price is only an estimate, but due to it bring a free tier, you won't be charged. Good video as always mate. 😎

Oracle's calculation is a bit tricky. I had allocated 160gb already and though when I allocate 50gb for another instance, it would only be charged for 10gb since I'm using 210gb. But they don't calculate it that way. Since the last allocation went over 200, they charge me for 50gb. Their document is pretty misleading but they make the rules. So I deleted an instance to make room and just kept it under 200. I would have willingly paid for 10gb but not 50gb while going over by 10.

I've been trying to make a VM in the Always Free for a couple days now and it just keeps saying out of capacity. I've tried multiple times a day for like 4 days and keep getting the same "Out of capacity" Error on all 3 domains.

This very channel has a video about using a script and an API key that automatically retries. Note you will have greater chances of creating a 1, 2, or 3 core instance rather than the 4 core but this is what the script is for.

One thing to consider alex, is that this will keep the abusers at bay... and those that really need these services, might not have as much of an issue getting some hardware (which appears to be low on capacity at times)... In other words: This is not good for the general population, but hopefully it keeps the abusers "at bay" and they won't wreck it for honest people that need this type of hardware....

I don't think it would be related, its usually a network error: kinsta.com/knowledgebase/ssh-connection-refused/ id try rebooting the server, updating putty, and checking port 22 is still setup correctly

Hi, that is correct. the free tier stays free. But it seems they close your account if you miss to manually login the Cloud Shell. Means go into the instance and login the shell. I suppose this is the difference with the pay version. I missed the mails about it, I logged in many times via SSH and used the instance a lot. But 2 days ago I simply lost everything (they deleted me) and there is no way I can talk to the support (or contact them in anyway) as Free Tier dont have the luxury. So, a word of advice, do login the Cloud Shell storage (home directory) manually. 😞

@@nukeman4 Hi, means that somehow they deactivated me but not deleted me. And there is no way I can create a new instance. I have no permission to do absolutely anything. I lost all the work done in the past year. Very frustrating. I tried the forum.. I have little and useless response from some Oracle affiliated or employee. Basically all the suggestions given is to follow the procedure by contacting Oracle. However, since I am Free Tear, I have no permission to contact anyone. I saw an article in their forum that the same guy that answered me, answered someone else and basically saying that since is Free Tear, he cant request not even a termination. In other words, we are in a Limbo and we will stay there forever. I am trying to see if I can create a new account using different credit card.. I hope the name will not blow my cover up! But I must say, I expected a lot better from Oracle ..

I have this issues, I had setup the oracle authenticator on my server but unfortunately lost my phone, now over a month I can't access the account, any work around on how I can recover the account?

I don't think it's possible if you're on a free account - support won't help you :( Others discussed it here: community.oracle.com/customerconnect/discussion/703949/lost-access-to-2fa It's good to have multiple devices set up, or back up the 2FA key somewhere secure to prevent these problems in future, if you only have a single 2fa option, that's a big risk.

remember oracle is a litigation company with a software development branch. that thing in the corner is not a bug. its just so that they can get away with suddenly charging your credit card.

possibly, it could just be something they don't want to fix because it only affects free users... but if they want to use the free tier to improve their brand and attract users in the future it seems counterintuitive to scare people away :D
