Tourism in Japan used to be more for people who understood and appreciated the Japanese culture. Now, I've seen an influx of people completely unaware of Japan, and in general, they're going only because it's a trend. Then, that's the moment the cultural shock starts. Japan has a very different culture and manners from Western countries.

it was the same with rich American tourists in Europe in the 1960s. They did not know the difference between a castle or a cathedral or a city hall, all look the same ! They took their own hamburger or coca cola into a high class Michelin star restaurant in Paris and then were flabbergasted when thrown out: we pay, so what ?

It's all about social media's fault, though. 99% of the people coming to Japan today are influenced by social media. This is the result of over-promoting Japan on social media. That's why I didn't want Japan to become popular on social media.

People don't seem to do any research aligned with their personal interests which I always have done. I'm not necessarily looking for something someone else enjoys. This has led me to wonderful experiences in those places which have drawn me to them. However, it seems that many people "must" go to those places where influencers have been to get the same photo. Such a vacuum of imagination. If the shot is what you want, buy a postcard. It will have been taken by a pro and likely be much better. I once travelled with a group and one of the members, a guitarist, knew of a Kyoto shop which specialized in guitars. He sought that out during our free time and not only bought a guitar there, but was invited by the shop owner to play a very famous guitar--apparently unique to that shop--which the guitarist could not afford but knew of and simply wished to see. Those sorts of personal and meaningful moments are the sorts of experiences that make travel worthwhile.

Realistically the tourists coming from the rest of the world won't be able to meet the local Japanese standards in terms of public property use, litter, respecting other people and overall civic consciousness. It must be frustrating for the locals and it's only a matter of time before they enforce something strict which would totally go against the current Japanese approach.

Have u wondered if there's evil and good? Who is the character that people bring up when they are asked who is the leader of evil? Devil right? Who would be the counterpart who is the Supreme or Holiness of all? God, right? Creation is the biggest evidence that we are created by God. Our organs, our DNA, our cells, our urinary systems, our circulatory system, our neural functions, our unique fingerprints, and so forth. Our mothers cannot create any of these things within or outer part of our bodies. But still we love our moms.

I visited Kyoto for first time about three weeks ago. One thing I noticed immediately was that there were very few trash cans on public streets. I carried a bag around starting on the second day and either deposited in rest room can or took back to the hotel. Streets were very clean, saw very little trash, mostly cigarette buds. Why no trash receptacles? Of course, very crowded, lots of tourist.

Tourists won't get any better. Japan has been too lax in regards to immigration regulation policy. They let in all these obnoxiously loud and annoying influencers and the rest of the Japan-fetishizing weirdos in. What else do you expect to happen? Over-tourism is just a consequence of forced connectivity as a means to saturate globalization. People need to get tf out of there and leave Japanese people alone. I think the locals are growing less and less patient and tolerant as well, seeing as how badly-mannered many of these people are. Western people have no manners at all ever since they let uncontrolled immigration ruin their countries and seized a common cultural mindset, it's all about individuality. In Japan, people know how to adjust to society for the greater good.

Japanese are not perfect either, I've seen trashes in Tokyo's Shinjuku area discarded by Japanese. If you drive outside of big cities, there are plenty of trashes disposed especially under bridges where there are no tourists. I've lived in Japan, it's generally clean but not spotless. And as the poster above said, it's hard to find public trash bins.

I have traveled to Japan numerous times and know trash cans are scarce. So I bring my backpack and put my own garbage in it when there is zero trash can around. I don’t know if the locals bring their own garbage home. The streets are generally clean, I assume they do. Of course not every local Japanese do that. Once I actually witnessed a Japanese littered. Overall, Japan is clean and tidy. Hopefully tourists would help to keep it clean.

I found people in Kyoto to be so sweet and welcoming. Just avoid rush hour commute times, let locals have priority on trains buses and when walking and also just avoid places that have restrictions because of overcrowding and disrespect. I’m from Hawaii and we have major over tourism issue so I want to be the most respectful visitor I can be. I was there in April and there were many people in the popular places but also there are many less popular places that are beautiful. Explore, be respectful, be aware of your surroundings and rules, treat locals with respect. You are visiting their home.

Thank you for being so respectful to a destination (Japan) that is not yours- but your understanding is wonderful. I am from Aruba and the overtourism is horrible. The tourists are not respectfull of the island and don’t care about trashing and ruining it. Little to nothing is done to protect this little island from the foreigners looking to have a good time. They go back to their home and care less on what they left behind during their vacation.

I have ADHD and felt very loud and aware in Japan. And I took care to not be a nuisance to anyone, to adapt my volume and rhythm of speaking and to not be disruptive. If someone with inhibition problems can have that level of awareness, so can everyone else. The beauty of Japan is this reserved and more caring nature it has towards the bigger picture. If you visit, you contribute to that to keep it that way.

I'll actually be traveling to Japan for the first time next week. It's been my number 1 travel destination for many years. I've done tons of reading and preparations and it's a shame that tourists go and disrespect the traditions and rules of the country they visit. I feel people treat these places as theme parks, rather than places where people live and work like any other nation. I will be on my best behavior when I go. I will be visiting Kyoto for a few days when I'm there. I'm very excited. I enjoy your videos very much. They've been very informative on the Japanese perspective on various subjects. Very helpful!

I just got back a week ago, it has been my dream destination since I was a kid since because I have always been fascinated after having many Japanese high school exchange students stay at my house with my family in NZ. I am interested in the architecture, gardens, history, and most of all Bonsai. I guess I have learnt much about the culture over the years through our exchange students, but even then I spent a lot of time planning and researching before my trip so I was fully aware of rules, expectations, customs, laws and generally the way of Japanese life. The amount of other tourists I saw walking into restaurants or shops and saying "Hello" instead of "Konnichiwa" was appaling. It doesent take much to learn the basic's, whether customs, language or others, and the Japanese will appreciate any effort made.

There have been proven that evil spirits are in our realms. U can youtbe them up, watch paranormal shows, or even exorcism online. These demons are real. The devil is real. Then angels are real also. Then God is real also. You might be still kinda young, but have u wondered about where our souls go after this life? The everyday of work, family, etc are ways that the demons use to keep us away from ever thinking about the after life? This does sound funny or ridiculous to a common person. But when u realize how real demons are and they exist, it's so true that they will use any means to draw your attention away from God and anything related to salvation.

I was there a few weeks ago and it was lovely but packed with tourists. We enjoyed our stay out in Ukyo at the Yamazaki ryokan area more. It was quiet and wonderful to walk all around. I also confess I love Kizakura beers and Kizakura Kappa Country was a lovely place to sit and have a drink for a while. It was my first time in Japan, and I always like to go to the places that other people aren't--where there are no crowds and there's no one to bother or be bothered by. My wife and I were the only people visiting the local shrines and the only tourists we saw. I like to blend in and be like other people, live as they do and see life as they live it. To hear their conversations and be happy that they are happy.

カメラを向けているのに「外国人観光客は迷惑です」なんて言えないよ。笑最近京都と難波に行ったけど地獄のようだった。人が多すぎて前に進めない。観光地を見に行くというより、観光客を見に行くという感じ。現地に住む人には同情するし、日本人が有名な観光地から遠ざかっていくのも納得する。最近の日本人は外国人観光客の少ないマイナーな観光地に行きたがる。

I’m from Barcelona and I feel sorry for them. Massive tourism, what we have been suffering for the last 20 years, benefits only a few. It’s not only people and garbage everywhere, rent prices rise, family business close and a large etcetera of bad consequences. I don’t blame tourists as we are all tourists but the system is terrible.

First of all, I realized video's quality level has changed and some features added in video. Subtitle feature and some title, and screen quality. Takashii from Japan are improving himself constantly. During watching, I realized one more thing, Takashii was nearby of guests in past videos. There are only guests on the screen now. I liked this changes.

No need to worry. The locals have been very welcoming. On our walk to the Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, we had to walk through a residential area and most of the locals all said Ohayo Gozaimasu (good morning). So far, no anti-tourist sentiment

Japan should introduce a differential pricing system, a tourism tax and so on... it's natural, and major tourist countries, including Western Europe, are doing it all. These are side effects caused by the lack of related systems due to the rapid growth of Japanese tourism in recent years. The more it is delayed, the more side effects will increase.

@@NaYoungSeung Yes, many countries especially poor countries have different prices for foreigners. So i think would be great if there would be like 50% tax for tourists for every item they buy. And maybe 100 euro per day tax that could be used to fund steet cleaning, sewerage system and other infrastructure upkeep. Also it would make people with less purchasing power to avoid the country, so they would get all the people that can actually buy stuff and contribute to the society! Also there should be limits to number of tourists allowed in the country.

Hi Takashi, thanks so much for this video. My partner and I spent all of last Nov travelling around Japan in a campervan. We purposely avoided Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto as there were so many people and we wanted to be out away from the touristy places. Japan is so much more than those places, as exciting as they are, we needed the quieter rural life. We live in rural Australia and don't particularly enjoy the craziness of cities. Castles, temples, Momiji and forests, tea and rice, farming and village life revolving around traditional skills and crafts is what does it for me. I DO enjoy going to those other places but I can't stay for long. They are very exciting and very beautiful but Japanese people need their space too and they LIVE there. Thanks again. Cheers.

Thank you, Takashii, for doing this interview and showing us what Kyoto locals think about the problem of over-tourism. Especially the answers from the deaf lady were really wholesome. Charing fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. From what I've heard they already did this in Italy. What I would do, if I had to find a solution to this problem, is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy places.

I was just in Kyoto. We’re respectful, clean and not noisy disruptive people so when I found out we couldn’t visit some of the areas that we had been planning for a year, my fam and I were disappointed and devastated that others ruined our experience. However, we understand the locals nonetheless. I pray it gets better for them.

I was just wondering if you ever come across people in Japan that exaggerate or get over emotional in their responses. I'm surprised to see that so far the people in Japan seem very level headed about their problems and their evaluations on the topics that you interview them about.

I´ve lived in Kyoto for 7 months and I keep visiting it every year, I have to go to Kyoto because it´s so unique and I love the nature, the unique houses and streets. I always find quiet places and I do not go to supercrowded places if I don't have to. I am a tourist myself but I guess you have to prepare well for Japan and for Kyoto. So here are my tips for other tourists: 1. Don´t stop abruptly on the street, pay attention to people behind you and in front of you. 2. Don´t travel with too much luggage, some suitcases are so big that even I would fit it. ;-) 3. Don´t eat and walk. 4. Don't talk loudly on the train and on buses. 5. Behave at temples and shrines and don't forget that these are sacred places. Be quiet there too. 6. When you take pics, don´t take ages to do it. You are not the only one who wants to take a photo. 7. Don´t forge to queue. (at train stations, restaurants, everywhere where Japanese people queue too. 8. Take your rubbish to your accommodation if possible. 9. Don´t just go to Kyoto, go off the beaten path. Japan is amazing! ;-)

japan needs trash cans..most of the rest of the world has trash cans on the streets..why can't japan. Never liked that when I lived there, still don't lol. I happen to like to eat and walk at the same time.

One of the main reasons as to why we need the large luggage is that we shop ‘til we drop in Japan. I’m not gonna fly for 17 hours across the world which costs me a whole salary and bring a tiny luggage. I think what could be done is that Google maps makes it clear for first timers that Kyoto’s buses are nothing alike western buses and you shouldn’t ride them if you have luggage. Atleast in Sweden there is places in buses where you can store your large luggage. I was horrified and extremely stressed when I got on a bus and realised how Kyoto buses look like, would’ve never opted for that option if I knew that the buses were completely different. It was a horrible, stressing and embarrassing experience as I ofc do not want to cause discomfort for others.

Thank you very much for this video. It was eye opening. I am from Germany and I am going to visit Japan in a couple of weeks with my daughter after she will have finished her State examination in law. Traveling to Japan is something very special to us. It is some kind of a wish of a lifetime. While my daughter is doing her studies now, I am doing mine. I try to learn as much as I can before we are on our way to this very extraordinary place. I read tons of books now. I do not want anybody there to feel uncomfortable because of our presence. Listening to what people in Kyoto say about tourists was very interesting. They say everything in such a nice and friendly way, no matter if they are old or young. That was amazing. We are looking foreward to see Kyoto and we also try to visit some of those spots that have been suggested in your video to avoid overcrowded places. First of all we are exploring Tokyo. So I am very curious about the difference between those two cities.

Was just there in April. The restriction was literally just one street. It didn’t affect our trip at all. We were still able to see all the sights we wanted to see.

Loved this video! I’ve been to Kyoto twice now. Myself and my family , are always respectful and follow the local rules. But this is so interesting , to see what the locals think , about tourists in their city. I hope everyone watches this video and do the right things while having their holiday in Kyoto. Since AirBnb got huge, and especially post pandemic, lots of cities in Europe struggle with overtourism as well. The only solution that seems to work is limiting the number of hotel beds & AirBnb. Regarding the manners of the tourists, I think the easiest solution would be a leaflet in every hotel room, explaining everyone do's and don'ts in clear terms. I don't think most people disrespect cultural norms out of malicious intent, ignorance is most likely the cause. Oh and Japan - please please please instead of the 1000th news bite about trash on streets, just start setting up bins. I know that locals would love to see that, too. Win win.

Thank you making this! I’m actually visiting Japan on May 24 and one of the places I’m going to visit is Kyoto. I’ve been wondering about how the people of Kyoto felt about tourists recently and this does make me feel better about visiting. Plus as an American I have no problem speaking up if I see another tourist disrespecting Japan. Also I’m so happy you met up with Shogo. Before my trip I’ve been doing a lot of research on Japan which is how I found both of your channels on the first place. So I think it’s really cool to see you both in a collaboration episode! @@anthonyloke2846 I'm American, here in Kyoto visiting. Go for it. Rather than overcrowded, I'd say the main problem is people don't have a sense of direction or stop in the middle of the street, sidewalk, stairs, etc to take pics causing congestion.

It's good if you get a chance to go but I personally wouldn't go out of my way especially if it's crowded frankly. I think Gion festival is awesome if you can go during that time. But for old temples and scenery, you can go to Nara or Nikko or Kamakura or some place else less crowded.

It’s a double edge. I live it a rural area but it’s close to a major amusement park. Lots on people from all over the world come to visit. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating just trying to drive to work but if it wasn’t for the tourist, our economy wouldn’t be what it is. respecting your hosts is very important though.

Thank you for this video which offers another and possibly more balanced view of the situation in Kyoto. There's a tendency for mainstream media to focus on the negatives which draw more attention and monetization. As the video points out, there are a lot of places off the increasingly "beaten-to-death" path to explore with no crowds such as Kamigama to the north. Understandably, first-time tourists who don't have the luxury of time but only cash, want to immortalize their presence in the former capital at key locations. I recently watched a video of the Hyatt Regency which, at rooms starting at ¥65,000 and going up to ¥100,000+, struck me as rather incongruous with the issue.

I hate it that the Kyoto-natives are having issues with tourists around the city. I was in Kyoto back in August 2015. Though I’m a foreigner, if I were now I do know how to act when I’m in temple areas and within the city due to my past experience there. A lot of foreign tourists do not study or brush up on learning how to act while in Japan or know everything you need to know while visiting Japan. This could be the problem that’s going on right now. I read 2 Japan travel guide books before I went to Japan, so I knew the etiquette of the Japanese people. I will probably go back to Japan in the future to visit my friend Haruna and her husband with taking my daughter and my wife. The trip will be a surprise trip for my daughter when she graduates preschool.

Thank you for this! I visited Japan for the first time last July with friends. Though we spent most of our time in Tokyo we did take a day in Kyoto and stayed at a lovely Ryokan near Nishiki Market (Highly recommend visiting both!) I loved my time there and did my best to educate my friends so they would be conscientious of locals and trying to stay out of the way. I feel bad we had to bring large luggage with us on the train too. We had all of our things with us that we needed for our week long stay and to bring back souvenirs. It was necessary to have the large luggage, but I still feel bad that we took up space with it. Plus it was really hot, and the guys in our group are not small people. We want to visit for the fire festival next year and get kimonos and really take in the tradition and atmosphere of Kyoto. I'd also love to stay at the same Ryokan, the owners and staff were wonderful. ❤

I recommend looking into takkyubin (luggage forwarding) services. They are quite affordable and you won't need to lug your baggage around or block the aisles on trains and public transportation. It's a win-win for everyone.

So encouraging to hear of the open mindedness of the Kyoto locals- considering to huge amount of tourists in their city. I’m in Kyoto right now, visiting from Australia, and am very aware of the local rules and general etiquette required. It’s disappointing to hear of the issues in the Gion area as well, but is the price of bad behaviour- overall though, we love to visit Kyoto and the locals love sharing their culture. A healthy balance is definitely required though in order to keep Kyoto beautiful and healthy tourism wise.

It's true. Kyoto people have a strong sense of elitism among Japanese people, and even now that Tokyo is the capital, they believe that Kyoto is the center of Japan and that they are on a different level than people from other regions. This is especially true among the elderly.

A lot of people don't realize that the tourism in Kyoto is concentrated around specific routes and areas. Unless this changed after I lived in Kyoto, a big part of the city is actually pretty quiet and relaxing. Most locals don't have that much trouble, unless they have to go to the busy spots or have to use public transport.

We visited Osaka a couple months back. We stopped in Kyoto for a day, but didn't go far. We tried to get lunch but were refused service. It was a busy rainy day, so we ended up enjoying a stop at a beautiful temple near the rail station and then headed back to Osaka.

Just recently went to Japan for the first time in April. It was an amazing experience, and I met some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life. However, there was a portion of the trip where I was depressed and nervous because of videos like this. I was so scared of making a bad impression or giving visitors a bad name. I’m truly grateful for my trip, though, and I plan to go back. Although next time I will definitely relax more and just remember that basic manners and courtesy are often enough to get by anywhere. Charing more fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. What I would do is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy place.

The solution is limiting the number of tour groups that can travel to those areas. They bring bus loads of people, and they all spill out and act completely oblivious to all local customs and norms, because they're in the tour group bubble.

Yes some of the Chinese might exhibit rude behaviour, but Chinese tourists to Japan dropped to only 20% compared to pre-COVID and yet still not recovering. Especially after Japan started to release nuclear wastewater into the ocean last June, which made more Chinese less willing to go there. In fact, these days Japan receives most of its tourists from Western countries and other Asian countries. So you can shut up your opinionated hole!

A 7/11 blockade was built infront of Mount Fuji because Koreans would flock to the area to take photos causing all sorts of trouble. They also discard trash, cigarettes on the ground. This is from hundreds of Japanese eye witnesses.

Taking a bunch of photos are not Korean habits. It's the Chinese, the worst tourists in the world. They have a bad reputation all around the world. All the Japanese that I've talked to said the Chinese tourists are the culprits and witnessed by thousands of Japanese. It's also written in Japanese newspapers about Chinese poor behaviors. The blockade was built in front of Mount Fuji to prevent flock of Chinese taking pictures and causing traffic hazards. I was there and witnessed it myself a few weeks ago during the Cherry Blossom season, most of them were Chinese!!!

⁠@@InfamyJunkie It is definitely being over exaggerated by japanese media more so than youtubers or influencers as they only regurgitate what they see or hear in the news media. Basically comparing to 2019 there’s like 7~10% more tourists, depending on the area of course. It’s negligible and not worth talking about 24/7. The same issue with crimes or violations of rules by foreigners. The foreign population of Japan is about 3%. That’s not a lot. Yet somehow every day it has become basically a meme at this point to have a news article about some foreigner somewhere who tried to talk a girl up or some ridiculous stuff like that. This over reporting is a recent trend and wasn’t a thing last year. This is all very new and very scary tbh. Because japanese people watch the tv and read the news all day. And they believe what they see. I’ve experienced different (negative) treatment in the last six months compared to the last decade. If you compare Kyoto for example to 10 or 15 years ago there are more tourists, yes, but it was already packed in 2008 and 2012 to take two years as an example.

But their thinking can be negatively influenced by constant negative news coverage in the media. It breeds stereotypes, fear and xenophobia. And you’re right, those are indeed similar narrative trends comparable to all the Maga shit in the US.
