Developing countries have long been blamed for destroying the environment with their large families. Overpopulation has been identified as the enemy. But how accurate is this claim exactly?
We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

I don’t know when it was that he said that but the population was at a specific value. At that point the statement was true. Double or triple that value would the statement still be true? However you look at it there is a maximum number of people the planet can support. The more people there are the more limited each one’s life experience will be.

@@lazybastard6004 I concur in regards to co2 levels. Regional overpopulation is an entirely different subject. All of the data you just listed has little immediate effect on areas of the world that have intensely over- populated areas. Eating or not eating , not global warming, would be the main concern of hundreds of millions of people. And if populations continue to increase in these areas at the same rate, in fact if populations don't come down in these areas, as they are already unsustainable, many millions will die of starvation. All politics aside. Lack of food will be your demise long before global warming. Cultural change will be inevitable, if a balance can ever be realized. No hate. Just do the math.

This comment is more proof we are overpopulated. If there are 100 people standing for one job and there are millions of people, unemployed and everywhere you go for a good paying job, nothing is hiring and when you go to a standard job like a grocery store, you have to compete with other people just to get your foot in the door, I remember in the city of Boston alone I handed in my résumé to be a bartender in 30 different bars in the city and I had experience in Miami Beach went to bartending school and did a catering for weddings and I got rejected everywhere and the market is way over saturated with bartenders. Everywhere you go you will see 10 people handing in their resumes including me then they are interviewing seven people And it’s like a lottery winner on who gets the job even if you are experienced and well qualified you will still have a hard time getting your foot in the door and when you do get your foot in the door, they will train you piss, poor and let you go within a week and replace you the next day and that’s because there are so many bartenders not only is the market oversaturated, but it’s overpopulated

To fix the overpopulation problem. They need fix the population's mentality first. They see children as nothing more than a heir on ones accomplishment than actual individuals. Resulting in quantity. It also doesn't help that sex education is very low and many have teenage pregnancy.
@michasosnowski5918
@michasosnowski5918 Год назад
Yes, thats big problem. Unconscious parents having children that they dont see as individuals and treat like extensions of themselves. If people realize how much a child actually needs love, attention, and resources to grow up and be healthy individual, most people would not have children. But most people doesnt think about this. Then end up with few children and treat them poorly. And another generation do the same...

Overpopulation decreases human value, unemployment rises, pollution increases, and most of the youth are forced to work for a low salary with high living costs because one person rejects a job with a low salary or toxic environment 100 people will be willing to take that job as there is no option, quality of life & quality of education is decreasing, stress & competition increasing. Many people aren't happy with their personal or professional life, especially in developing countries like India, etc. Everybody is selfish to marry & have 2 children because when we look around everyone is following the same cycle if we don't follow the same routine we will be weirdos to our family and friends.

@@cantthinkofaname632 Not really. You can say that the "first class" (middle class for that matter) wastes a lot of food (I agree with that), but the real problem is that the "food factory" is built around certain areas and logistics (not to mention the money that companies and countries dont want to spend to feed other nations). And like I said, the "feeding" isnt the only problem. The real problem is the harm that we are doing to the planet by feeding to many people. And dont think for a second, that if the "lower class" had more purchasing power that they wouldn't consume the same as the other developed countries (by the way I dont really like this class stuff, its just a metaphor for "how many dollars do you have")

I feel like this video is more about deflecting blame, than actually answering the question. First off, the question is not as much if it is a problem for the planet, but more if it is problem for its inhabitants. The planet will survive us, unless we blow it to pieces, but we majorly affect how pleasant it is to be here and the amount of scarce resources we have at our availability. Of course it is a problem. Earth can't sustain an unlimited number of people, and I don't think it will be a good time to be alive, if we ever exceed the "final" capacity. The problem is the same, as it would be with overconsumption, where the poor will starve to death - on a scale much worse than today - while the rich hide behind walls. We already pollute too much, and 10b+ people will pollute more than 7b. It is not about blaming India or other places, where population is growing, every person on earth bears their own responsibility. Saying that overconsumption is the problem, is just turning the problem on its head. Both are big problems. The wealthy classes in India, probably pollute a lot more than the poor, but we can't keep people in poverty for that reason. Everybody wants a high standard of living - and yes the birthrate will probably slow down if that is achieved - but that might not happen until we reach 10-12b, if it ever does. Add to that, we are not the only species on this planet, drinking water is becoming more scarce by the year and the amount of land we all have to live on, is shrinking by the day.

i too think this video is more about pointing fingers than anything else. everone already know the percapita polution of europe or america is way more than the rest. but we are never going to get anywhere pointing finger. and as the biggest nations have the most to contribute i think its unwise to sour any efforts. europe and the us have the means while the rest need to too. this is absoutly the wrong time to fan the flames of tribalism and play the blame game. i do admit, india in particular has a bad rep for population. but the argument, your 1 million take up as much space as our 1 billion, there for we are fine and even, is no excuse if in the end the absolute need to be reduced. and in india too. they might all be dirt poor now, but if you at all value human life and strive to better their situation, that argumet is utterly muted.

CO2 at 0.04% is a 2,500th of the atmosphere. That means to warm the climate by just 1"C carbon dioxide molecules must capture 2500"C of heat energy. That is bonkers. It also breaks all the laws of thermodynamics. Methane at 0.00017% is a 600,000th of the atmosphere so it's even more bonkers. However, the climate is changing. This is because of deliberate geoengineering programmes, in particular ozone thinning away from the poles. Though largely unreported ozone thinning effect is directly observable, this summer you can see a unnaturally bright sun just as we did last year. Under these conditions the pain felt when looking at the sun is not only from the increase in visible light but the much larger increase in infrared. (Look up at the sky and you will see a range of geoengineering operations in progress, these include chemtrail induced cloud or hazing, ripple patterns caused by HAARP installations, bizarre and unnatural cloud formations). Climate change is a programme to force change in accordance with the implementation of Agenda 21 /2030. Current events demonstrate this transition is well underway and will involve massive population cull through injected nanotech (re transhumanist programme). Agenda 21 also sees the permanent loss of all property rights with the introduction of universal basic income (ref NESARA/GESARA) and has/is being promoted by The World Economic Forum. 'You will own nothing and you will be happy' WEF In a depopulated world the surviving brainwashed and controlled population will be confined to mega cities. Carbon limits will be used to restrict consumption and liberty. Meanwhile the re-greened wilderness will be the exclusive playground of the ultra rich elite posing as conservationists. The CO2 hoax amounts to the theft of the world and the enslavement of humanity by a parasitic few. Welcome to the future! _________ I have included a debunking of 'accumulated heat' as it is so often used to explain how trace elements, so called 'greenhouse gasses', can warm the planet. Accumulated heat whilst sounding a reasonable explanation of how heat can build up is rather nothing more than gobbledygook. In fact it shows those using such arguments do not even understand what heat is. When we measure temperature we are measuring the heat energy a thing is losing. In short heat is a measurement of flow, the transfer of heat energy and this will always be in the direction towards the colder. For this reason a thing can never 'accumulate heat' in the way those advocating CO2 climate change describe. The temperature of a body is the measure of heat output, it can never be greater than the measure of heat input. Output = input. When a thing is warmed it is heated to an equivalent of the heat input. If this input is not maintained it will cool. Those that propose that heat can build up to be hotter than the total measure of heat input at a given time either do not understand what heat is or are being deliberately misleading. To illustrate, an object being heated by a flame can never become hotter than that flame, it's temperature cannot rise inexorably to the temperature of the sun for instance. Heat cannot be accumulated. When we think about it common sense tells us this must be the case. NASA and even Nobel Prize winning physicists have expounded 'accumulated heat' as the explanation how CO2 is able to warm the atmosphere. They claim that over hundreds of years CO2 has captured heat energy and this heat has 'accumulated' to produce a serious warming effect. As I have just explained, this is totally impossible and fundamentally violates all the laws of thermodynamics. That respected scientists should support such uneducated, unthinking nonsense is disturbing and only reflects that in terms of being able to think clearly about a subject they have no facility or inclination. These are the Dark Ages of science. Belief has outweighed logic or any critical thought. It tells us that we should not unquestioningly accept anything we are told, that experts can be fools. (NB: be aware of attempts to discard thermodynamics by talking about biology. Eg. 'It only takes a drop of arsenic to kill a person.' This would be somewhat desperate, muddled thinking. Clearly biological processes based on the reaction of a cell are not the same as the laws of physics/thermodynamics).

The way to do it is incentivization: Offer tax breaks and benefits for those who stay under the limits.

People are the only mammals (as far as I know) who are able to plan and reduce their birth rate = use contraception, family planning etc. That is the fourth option we have, and the only one that allows us to avoid the previous three (which are of course undesired in modern society). People are also able to increase the capacity (modern agriculture) or decrease the risk of the 3 factors (agriculture, healthcare, law enforcement) but only up to a certain level. This video makes no sense whatsoever, it's the worst one DW ever produced!!! Overpopulation is the elephant in the room! It's the root cause of all environmental problems. To lower consumption is of course good thing but it won't solve everything . But generally speaking low population = prosperity and good quality of life; high population usually means poverty Compare the standards of living in low populated countries like Norway, Ireland or Canada with overpopulated countries like Bangladesh or Nigeria ! The NY Times ran articles about overpopulation fostering pandemics, 60 Minutes a segment about overpopulation causing mass species extinction. The above "documentary" producers are not ready for prime time, and should get jobs in construction, drywall contracting, cleaning fast food grease traps at 3am, enjoy their "service economy" jobs, and leave the thinking to scientists, every poll of whom has them agreeing overpopulation by far our biggest problem, their words, "bigger than climate." Some newly married couples in India wish to be child free or take time to think about it due to many reasons and this is one of them. Even during this pandemic, people find it hard to make a decision for themselves. But society forces them to have children within few months of marriage. Or it's considered a Taboo by many and are forced to face criticisms from relatives and others. Women and men are adviced by random people to visit the doctors to have a child as soon as possible. Most of the time, the couples are made fun of people or they are often ignored in important traditional family events. Some in-laws force the newly wedded wives to have children as soon as possible or they will face the consequences and their sons might get infertile. Some people lack sexual education and do not understand the meaning of consent or do not wish to use contraception and they pregnant soon. They don't understand where the world is going these days. They just want to pop out babies.

Parents want their children to have children, so that their children do not question social and familiar traditions of having too many children and treating them poorly. The truth is that child needs massive amounts of love, attention, care and resources. But if you produce chidren to be extensions of yourself, helping hands around the house; so that older children help to raise the younger ones - it seems easier. I am not talking particularly about India here. Its the problem all over the world. Some people wake up to this and wait or dont want to have children, becose they are aware of just how terrible their childhood was, which society at large doesnt recognize. Hence criticism and push from society to have children quickly - if you have them, then you dont question this madness.

For all his faults, Bill Gates (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives serious money for education and contraceptives for women and girls around the world, as does the Clinton Foundation) believes two billion an optimum number. Online retail and shopping malls will keep this trend going until all resources are exhausted. One solution to this overconsumption is for Americans to recycle wood, plastic, rubber, and other raw materials to make more products.

Under this economic paradigm the main issue is population. You just can not reduce consumption without creating very serious troubles in society. The prime minister of India not long ago replied that he would start worrying on environment when India archived the western living standard. Fortunately enought urbanisation, among other occurrences, is driving birth rates below reposition so population will decrease what I don't know is wether it will happen on time. Cause time is something we are not very well off.

I agree that waste and consumption are a big issue but how can overpopulation is not a big issue? Isn’t there a fact about limited land and spaces? Everyone should be allocated a decent amount of space for their overall and mental wellbeing as well. Living in a cramp place with decent resources is not good enough. Everyone has their own dream and personal culture and that would also affect their lifestyle and consumption desire. Developed countries are consuming more is also a result of a “wealthier country“ that they have more disposable income. Still there is a huge rich and poor gap here that need to be highlighted as well. I still think overpopulation should be acknowledged and addressed.

What I am trying to say is that 10% of world population is living a FAR MORE SUPERIOR LIFE BY ENSLAVING THE REST 90% The day it will stop, you will see less more countries with average living standards and it will reduce the population in developing as well as reduce the carbon footprint from developed countries because their lifestyle will become Average from Good.

I feel this video glosses over some of the real issues entwined within overpopulation. We need to reduce waste and consumption, yes. No one disagrees. But the fact we are already seeing such environmental issues with our current population explosion is a worry. It might be that the global south has a smaller footprint per capita. But such countries will follow in China's footsteps towards a more western way of living as their economy grows. The changing diet towards a meat heavy intake, consumeristic markets and improved living conditions and infrastructure will all escalate the current issues, not to mention then adding on top the next 4 billion mouths to feed before we peak. Adding in increased urbanisation and the like too from more people... Also there are moral and philosophical implications such as quality of life, vs quantity of life. A finite amount of land with an increasing population has many challenges. If we changed our diet to plant based, rewilded a large share of current agirculute land, and shifted the human political view towards a nature first view, instead of a human centric view, then it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But we seem to lack any political and moral repurposing of how we as a species should live on this planet.

I think dismissing overpopulation as being a concern is absurd. There are definitely more than enough people in the world. But I think the bigger issue is not the fact that there are so many people, but the fact that in so many cultures this fact is being completely ignored. I think that it should become more socially acceptable for people to choose to have fewer (or no) children in every part of the world. This resolves over-population, helps improve the distribution of wealth, and encourages thoughtful reproduction which is what we *really* need. On a side note as someone who had an incredibly miserable childhood because I was raised by people who only had children to satisfy social expectation - we can save a lot of kids from similar unnecessary pain.
@MightyCoco

@@MightyCoco I didn't say don't have any children. I said only have children if you actually want them. And China is just generally poorly organised and far too focussed on profit and winning at everything. Other countries which have shrinking populations have found reasonable solutions to many of these problems (such as using elderly people's equity to support them financially). We don't need the population to keep growing, we just can't have it shrink very suddenly. China tried to effectively halve their population in one generation (again - poor organisation), and of course it drove emigration out of the country, and they only realised it was a problem after it was too late to viably fix it - again poorly organised, no thought, innovation or foresight, and a one-track-minded obsession with accumulating fortune and 'winning' against all other nations.
