I find it really funny that the Mario cartoon the Peach detractors are calling "obscure" just so happens to have it's theme song featured in the recent trailer.

I could never be a gamer. I mean where would I find the time to be outraged on social media all of the time? I'm too busy playing and enjoying video games to do that.

I just find it funny that we are so knee deep in the culture wars that a fictional monarch taking charge during an invasion of her kingdom and being the mentor to the hero and the leader to her people, a trait we ALL expect from our respective leaders during times of crisis, is seen as "woke". It's ridiculous because those who have been with Mario since day one know that the characters have so much flexibility when it comes to their characters they can be anything. Luigi had no real personality until Luigi's Mansion came out and he became everyone's favorite underdog, and it makes sense that in this movie he is following that trend.

Honestly, the worst thing about the halbard is that it's too much of a typical medieval weapon. Super Mario RPG and it's descendants have wild and interesting fantasy weapons, like wrist mounted cannons that launch hands. That would have been even more rad. However, that bridge drop thing sounds rad

Most fans: Princess Peach didn't just sit there and let her kingdom get taken over. What an insult to fans! Me: Oh so she's more like the Nintendo Power comic version of Peach. What a credit to fans!

It's crazy how those dudes are so obsessed with "wokeness" that they seem uncapable of viewing media from a different lens. It's not that hard to think "hey, maybe it would simply be boring if Peach was just a damsel in distress in the movie, so the writers made her more than that".

My personal experience with her character really shining was in both Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario where she starts off the story in the damsel role but basically becomes one of the player characters and plays an active role in both. They just happen to be the two best written Mario games in my opinion too.

Admittingly I was taken by surprised with Peach not being the damsel in this movie cause I felt like for the first REAL attempt at a "Super Mario Bros." movie, they'd be sticking closer to tradition. However I wasn't appauled by it at all, and after thinking about it for a bit, it does make sense since in this movie, this is Mario's first time in the Mushroom Kingdom. He's outta his comfort zone so it makes sense that he'd be fumbling a bit. Whereas with Peach, it makes sense that she actually takes charge like a ruler should, given that she's lived in this world her whole life. Also she isn't condesending to Mario in any way. She's still genuinely nice to him. In other words, she's in no way what Cucks and Grifters and Bitch Shitpero are describing her as.

This isn't the first time Peach has actually done something like this, in and out of the games, mainline or otherwise... From the Super Mario Bros Super Show, to The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3, to Super Mario World, she's done some of her own rescues, but those're cartoons. Then there's Super Mario Bros 2/Doki Doki Panic, Super Princess Peach, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario 3D World, all of which she helped save kingdoms outside of her own...

The halbed is actually the second most Girl Weapon, after the composite bow. Boys get to use a bastard sword or a dagger with poison on or sometimes a trebuchet.

There is one thing that annoys me about Peach. She is a *Princess* but rules over the Mushroom *Kingdom* . She either should be "Queen Peach" or the land should be called "The Principality of Mushrooms".

In an interview miyamoto said the peach that’s in the movie is the peach he has always wanted her to be in the games since day one He just never had the opportunity to really do that until now he couldn’t before because of simplicity as a game introduction cuz it was easy to understand

Peach always was a strong character, in the manual of the first super mario bros game they say the story is bowser used his black magic to transform the citizens of the mushroom kingdom into blocks and the reason he captured peach is because her magic would reverse it. Her magic counters his so he probably put her in some anti magic cage like she's normally is trapped in now. Combine it with other games such as super mario rpg where she has strong healing magic making her seem very much like final fantasy white mages which she happens to look similar to when she gets her fireflower power. Or lets take super princess peach that gave her strong elemental magic but she doesn't have a firm control over them because her emotions distrupt it. I thought it was a intersting idea to have a wizard's spells get out of control through their emotions. That they can't be too angry or else they'd accidentally burn everything down with uncontrolled fire magic. Plus that game had when peach is happy she gains wind powers like her trademark float that she consistently has in the games and smash bros. Peach has powerful magic, especially what we'd see as white mage/cleric spells. Mario just doesn't naturally have magic. He uses his smarts and power ups he comes across to stop/get past bowser, free peach and the day is saved. And I can see that being the case for the movie. Where mario uses his unique mind from being a human not of that world to overcome bowser, maybe with the help of a star or fireflower power up and save the day with peach. Honestly if they wanted someone to summarize the first game so they have a baseline of how the plot should go it'd be that. Then add the kongs and mario being from somewhat our world's broklyn and you'd have this movie from the trailers.

What if this is setup for her to get captured anyway, like she slips up while in battle and mario has to actually save her, he knows her now, they both have some feelings for one another and such, there would now actually be an insensitive to save her.

1st. Peach not being a damsel for this movie also works from a motivational standpoint. If Mario is a foreigner to the Mushroom Kingdom, what reason would he really go out to save someone he doesnt even know. Bowser really isnt his problem. That's why Luigi, his brother/partner/BFF is playing the roles of the damsel. Now Bowser really is Mario's problem. 2nd. YEREMY!? 😭😭

As a guy who has joked with his friends for the better part of a decade about how comedically incompetent Princess Peach is in the video games, I'm pretty happy to see her finally defending her kingdom like an actual leader would be expected to. In fact, I'd actually prefer if Nintendo went with this characterization for Peach going forward, as I think it could pave the way for more unique storytelling in the Super Mario video games. also, on a side note, I've been watching your content for a good while now, and think that you always have something interesting to say. I can't believe they woke up Princess Peach, let her have a healthy sleep schedule smh. I grew up in an era after the Super Show (so this was a welcome history lesson), and what I saw and played were the Mario RPGs and the Advance ports. People younger than me might have grown up with Super Princess Peach, more of the RPGS, or 3D World. Basically every generation has witnessed at least one of "all of these pushes" when they were kids, and most of these are *in the games* , many in *notable* games. So the talking chairs who complain about "out of character Peach" are actually not real gamers. That, or they are so consumed by their reactionary obsession that they have to ignore a piece of their childhood which they definitely played or knew about.

(Mary sue in particular) A term that so happened originated and defaulted to women and still is heavily associated with women writing and levied at women (as people like to pretend it isn't and use 'gary stu' like it's some counter example), despite men dominating leading roles since forever. What they're doing is having this 'overton window' of how capable and idealized women are allowed to be that doesn't conform to traditional gender roles being pushed so far right its not even funny. Further contributing to implicit patriarchal biasas and drive women away from writing for making each other feel TOO good about themselves. Not to say that the latter WAS what they're doing with Star wars and Rey (they don't give a fuck the sequels are too dull), but this can have disastrous consequences for media literacy, analysis and consumption. The term will be watered down to the point where women have to be extremely careful in commiting any typical protagonist things like basic agency, being correct, being powerful, having impressive feats and skills (that isn't stereotypical), being blessed just because they can, having to explain and justify having any arbitrary positive qualities (that isn't stereotypical), plot armor, asspulls etc etc etc. Shit they don't even need to be protagonists either. Men don't really have to worry about all of this, because Male power fantasies have been entirely normalized in culture for a long time. It was never really good faith to begin with and was destined to be horrid, that's the only path mary sue can realistically take. Ripley, Sarah conner, Samus Aran and some other female characters that so happened to exist far before gamergate to hide behind plausible deniability be damned. They think politics were invented when they hit their 15s.

what a great video holy moly! You articulated so much about what i've been feeling surrounding the conversations about this movie and Peach in general. Just the other day, I was being told that Peach was the "lamest princess" out of the three. I was like ??????? She's like the only one that is given actual character beyond a single word descriptor. Her depiction, and honestly all of the Super Show/Comic inspiration has me so excited for this movie! It seems they're taking a lot of good elements from Mario's extended canon, something I didn't think the big boys at Nintendo would let them do!

What people tend to forget is that there's a history of gags from the 2000s where the princess (of any video game franchise, including Mario and Zelda) doesn't go along with the hero because she doesn't know the guy, even after the princess is rescued by the guy. Even Seth MacFarlane, of all people, did a gag like that in his old Cavalcade of Comedy series, so you know how unoriginal that is. In other words, the princess wasn't established before the need to rescue her, much less aware of a potential hero's existence. Both previous Mario movies circumvented this by having the princess meet the hero before their capture. In comparison, you don't need further motivation to save a brother. He's a brother, and a person (usually) cares about a family member. Of course, this is from a storytelling perspective. Also, what's stopping Princess Peach from getting kidnapped later on in the movie? Did anyone ever think of that?

I wanted to say I'm happy you pointed something out I don't see pointed out enough but I've been saying for quite some time. The fact that a lot of criticisms thrown around aren't exactly sexist or racist and might even be right. The issue is more that there is a pattern in which people/characters are targeted by that criticism. I found this particularly standing out when it comes to the most recent Star Wars movies. There's a lot of complaints there about women being too competent and men not being competent enough, considering how that ended up being reflected in the actual text doesn't really line up.

Most people forgot about our second super Mario game, where you can play as peach. Besides Mario doesn't end up with Peach, that honor goes to Luigi

Impressive words there! I thought from the start Peach would be awesome in the movie, because she has usually been a damsel-in-distress... but has defended herself on several occasions... which means she doesn't need saving all the time. I think it's a great development. Peach should get to do more than being a damsel-in-distress. She's my second favourite Mario character for that matter! 🥰 And what you pointed out about her showing Mario what the Mushroom Kingdom is like is a great approach, knowing this is Mario's first visit, while she is having to defend her kingdom from Bowser, but needs all the help she can get! 😃 So I think too, that there's nothing wrong with her in the animated Mario movie! Just an improvement on her character, showing she's not always a damsel-in-distress, but she also needs to show Mario what the Mushroom Kingdom is like! I feel so conflicted. I'm glad they didn't make her the damsel in distress, but I also think some of the changes are a miss. Growing up I loved that peach was gentle and soft while still capable and powerful. They've taken a lot of that quiet confidence out and opted for a basic "insert female lead here" personality/voice instead. I dislike when american media shows that introverted traits are synonymous with weakness. We should embrace those traits a show power along side them. There's more depth to that in my opinion. What would I change? I love the outfits, weapons and active role in her kingdom! My criticism really lies in the voice direction and body language of the character. If those had been more true to the original, I think It would feel much more like Peach. As an introvert, I related to peach a lot. She showed me I could be powerful even though I'm quiet. It will be sad to see that part of her go. That being said though, I'm excited to see her on the big screen. She deserves a spotlight and I am excited to see what else she is capable of!

The GamersTM who are mad about girlboss Peach are likely the same people who poke fun at Peach for always getting kidnapped in the mainline games. Were they not that serious about their criticism towards Nintendo's treatment towards Peach's damsel in the distress status?

From the mainline games themselves, Peach is almost never anyone's favorite character. Most people just say they prefer Daisy or Rosalina to her, because in most cases she's just boring. This also explains why most love and prefer Paper Peach: her character has layers, isn't absolutely worthless and is rather active.

Short Answer: NO. Anyone who seriously thinks that Princess Peach in the Super Mario Bros Movie is gonna' be portrayed as "woke" is an idiot. I'm sorry, but a female monarch taking charge and actually being a leader during a time of crisis is not even close to being "Woke". Woke means "Being aware or pro-active in socio-political issues". A woman taking charge and actually being a strong female character in an animated kids movie is not a socio-political issue in any way. You can't even make the argument that this is a feminist issue because it's not commenting on any sort of issues that women go through, if anything it puts a woman in a position of power and portrays her accurately to real world leaders. Seriously how is "Is Princess Peach woke now?" even a question? (Sorry if I seem a little harsh but this GENUINELY baffles me.)

Representing the outraged online commenters as a sentient gamer chair was an inspired choice. And I agree, Super Princess Peach _is_ a great game, would've even rivaled New Super Mario Bros. if it had multiplayer and minigames. Umm, wahoo!

When Peach does get her chance to shine, she's usually pretty great. It's a cry out loud Shame when people dismiss these opportunities because it's not a "Mainline" game or "The Real Princess Peach". Take for example Peach in Super Paper Mario. There is often a special highlight on the Dating Sim scene, but she's really just good throughout, I'd let her step on me.

I just wanted Luigi to be a hero along with Mario too! But I still think he will have his own plot during the movie, where he will learn the traditional run, jump and trigger Power Ups! And I really liked what they did with Peach, and she can bond with Mario, so he'll really have reason to save her!

Hopefully they do both Mario and Peach justice in this movie. I’m waiting to see the chemistry between them. As long as they don’t follow the current movie climate of belittling the legacy hero, it would be better if these two were both given dynamic character arcs. I'm probably gonna fumble over explaining this but one thing that jumps out to me about the roll model to young boys argument is that it and "girlboss Peach" aren't just mutually exclusive but I would argue that helping women as their equal is a much better message for young boys to take in.

If I had anything to nitpick about what we've seen about Peach so far is that, though they're few and far between, we've also had examples and smaller instances of her being in active roles (mostly in the RPGs) where she's still like, high femme/prim and proper in personality and mannerisms while still kicking ass, that what we've seen in the trailers feels a bit flat in comparison? I get why they'd aim for something more straightforward for a general audience, but I do think how much cooler that halberd march scene might be with the contrast of a much daintier Peach from earlier in the movie, as that switch flips from her putting on the air of a monarch and getting into go mode as "shit gets real" for lack of a better phrase. I wouldn't expect anything super nuanced from an Illumination movie, though, and like I said, it's just a nitpick. People treating it like a culture war thing are massive chuds lmao

It would be so strange if the movie just did the damsel trope unironically. In the first super mario game there already was a legendary "in another castle". The trope with damsel in need of saving could become fresh and cool and not like other movies again but, I hope, we have some years of creativity and demolished tropes before us yet.

Dang, I wish I was surprised people got upset over... Peach wearing an outfit from the games and picking up a weapon. Didn't she basically have a gun in the Rabbid games? Thinking back, I also don't really remember Odyssey getting flack for this kind of stuff. Peach gets at least eight new outfits in the postgame and adventures around the world by herself. Heck, Mario can even rock a wedding dress as an Amiibo outfit. Is mildly progressive stuff deemed "okay" if it's postgame/amiibo content? the only reason i agree with Peach having "the wrong weapon" is cuz i wouldve actually loved if her weapon was like, her umbrella. thats it thats the only reason. i just think if this movie is gonna reference so many Mario things, id like them to reference Super Princess Peach and have her use her umbrella as a weapon instead of a random halberd. i mean wouldnt it be more wacky and in-tone with the Mario world for her to fight using an umbrella, and STILL be badass and cool with it as if it were an actual weapon?

the banjo-kazooie alpha gamer chair is incredible tbh tho i am exhausted by pop culture. and not only are our replies feeding the jeremies, the jeremies' are feeding the movie. a halfway-notable videogame film is not the milestone everyone's made it out to be in any direction also I just know there's going to be one scene where kamek crossdresses, gives a throwaway line about enjoying it, and everyone's going to be giving discourse about whether it's Good/Bad Representation or the Woke-pocalypse again (despite this actually happening in the games anyway, as usual) the real answer is that everyone should eat a super crown and/or dress like peach until it stops being notable. every character who has wore that dress so far has rocked it

I like when Peach is active and capable, heck, I loved her comic version, I just don't want her to be turned into Daisy. We already have a Daisy. Peach is sweet with a feisty side. Daisy is feisty with a sweet side. So if Peach was feisty first and sweet second then Daisy would be redundant as a character. Thankfully, the movie didn't end up doing this. Her sweet side was still very much visible and I was happy with her characterization. But apparently the fear that they would make her too girlbossy to the point where Mario wouldn't even be the hero anymore... wasn't entirely unfounded. Because apparently, an earlier version of the movie's script had Peach be the hero for most of the movie, to the point that Nintendo had to step in and remind the writers that this was supposed to be the Mario movie, not the Princess Peach movie. And I think that's fair. If they make enough sequels that Peach will have her own turn as protagonist, then I absolutely want to see her be the hero. Hopefully Daisy will be there too, so she can play off of Peach and they can show their contrasting personalities. If anyone should be a girlboss, it's Daisy. I want to see her rip Bowser's eyebrows off. All in all, I totally get why people want to see Peach be strong and heroic. I don't want her to just sit there and be rescued either. One of my favourite portrayals of Peach is in Super Paper Mario, where she doesn't take anyone's shit. Like when she snaps at Francis for attemping to seduce her and she blows up his dating software. That scene was gold. But more importantly, that feisty side of her is just one aspect of her personality in SPM. She's not gonna snap at people by default. She shows strength when she needs to. By default, she is sweet and kind. Loving and caring. Hopeful and thoughtful. Patient and collected. And I'm saddened that those qualities have become sort of... left by the wayside recently. They've been taken for granted. Like people don't really see the value in them, almost like those qualities don't "count" as proper personality traits. So people don't mind when a female character is reshaped to be more and more "powerful" in one way or another, while those aforementioned traits slowly fade away, almost like they made the character shallow and weak. And moving away from them more and more can only be a good thing. That may not be what people want to say when they advocate for a more aggressive version of Peach, but I just think we should be mindful of what we are leaving behind when we don't just change a character's roles, but her personality as well. Yes, I want to free Peach from being the eternal kidnap victim as well. But I don't think she's inherently a more valuable character just because she acts more like Daisy. It's good to have strong and heroic rolemodels, but it's also good to have a variety of different rolemodels, not just the same girlboss with different coats of paint. Not everyone is cut out to be the kind of hero who goes out and kicks butt. Some of us are weak and timid and don't want to participate in combat. Does that make us less valuable as people? I know that's not what you are saying, but that's how it comes across when the only type of female role model anyone ever advocates for is the tough, outgoing, aggressive fighter. I'm not a woman, but I don't see myself in physically strong or aggressive role models either. I prefer to settle conflicts in more peaceful ways. I know I'm rambling, so I'll try to cut it short. All in all, I wish people didn't see someone who can't save themselves from a demonic turtle as a worthless character or a bad influence. I couldn't save myself from Bowser either. I'd be happy to have a plumber boi save me. (Heck, I'd even reward him with a kiss lol) So I wouldn't want to send the message that unless you are physically strong, can fight, and can get yourself out of any predicament, that you're not fit to be worthy of respect and admiration, or at least not fit to be a role model. I know it's not glamorous to "just" be a good person. It's not exciting to be sweet or kind. It's not kick-ass to be loving and caring. It's not cool to be hopeful and thoughtful. It's not heroic to be patient and collected. Isn't that kind of sad though? That these qualities don't garner any respect in a character anymore? They're just seen as bland and nothing special. Yet when they are missing, we still rightfully lament their absence. Oh well, we'll see how Peach will evolve. I just hope they don't forget she's meant to be a pleasant character first and foremost.
