Is Photomator's new AI feature good?

AI powered auto-leveling is new in Photomator 3.3.22 and in Pixelmator Pro 3.6.7 and it's really good. Compared to the Apple Vision Framework it's night and day better, but you decide what you think.

at 7:54, both the new straightening AI and manual methods could be somewhat incorrect. Look at the bottom of the clouds in the background for a hint at an alignment solution. Rock strata layers can be angled due to natural geological changes, though it somewhat bends the brain to look at, but the clouds win, and I am surprised PM AI straightening didn't catch that.

As I was editing the video I knew someone would call me on that! I was so confident as I was saying it, but after the fact realized that really might have just been coincidentally aligned with the grid. Thanks for keeping me honest!

@@JosephSlinker I DL'd the newer version right after you posted the above video, tried PM AI Level on one of mine shot just today, and it just doesn't work well. I'm glad I updated (I don't do it every release), but I can't trust the AI level after seeing your review and using it for myself. I would rather trust the AI in my brain and 50+ years of photography experience. For new photogs, I am glad they have that tool because of all the non-level amateur-ish shots I've seen posted up online. I still can't believe the new tool couldn't detect the very clear bottom of the distant line of clouds as a hint.

It doesn’t just look at the horizon. I have some photos of Kaieteur waterfall in Guyana taken from a plane flying over it. There is no sky or horizon at all in the photo, just the waterfall surrounded by jungle. However, Photomator does automatically straighten it as if it knows that water falls vertically down. Quite amazing really.

I like that the feature's getting more attention! Even if it's not perfectly consistent, the fact that it gets as many as it does right is helpful when you're batch editing. Would love to get a guided upright feature down the line if you guys continue to focus on perspective tools.

Are you looking for something different from the perspective tools available today?

@@JosephSlinker The ones included are great, but the specific one I miss from Lightroom that photomator doesn't have yet is the ability to draw vertical and horizontal lines on the image to make perspective corrections. Look up Lightroom guided upright, and you'll see what I mean. It's not a a deal breaker to not have it, but it certainly was handy to have. Still prefer photomator overall!

Honestly, the only reason I haven't quite yet cancelled my Adobe subscription is because Photomator doesn't have a flag, rating, or even just a simple checkbox stating 'Mark for Deletion.' Any one of these, if implemented, would make Photomator the clear winner over Lightroom.

Image sorting and rating is the first thing on their roadmap on the Pixelmator site, plus many other useful things. No timeframes for implementation though.

Interesting results, but add some fairness you did give it some extreme angles to play with - which in real life you'd never take pictures like, unless you are a fan of extreme dutch tilt 😆deff a good improvement though.

Right?? That one that was 20° off made me feel guilty as I was editing it.
