Hi Dr! Love the videos. I'm 25 years old and have never went to university - had planned to after high school but couldn't due to some circumstances. I've been doing a lot of research on career paths and feel like psychiatry could be good for me. As I'm sure you know, this will mean 10-12 years of school (assuming I get into med school without any problems). I'd be around 35-37 by the time I would start practising. Based on this, do you think it would still be worth it? Thank you.

Thank you! Interesting. Some of my videos relate to quantum physics and the limits of logical thinking. I like, that the practice of psychiatry leaves a lot of room for creativity. I don’t recall students, who had a computer science background, however I did not know the background of most of them. Peter Goertz

Hello Doctor. I appreciate your work and that you share your valuable knowledge. From your experience is it a plus if someone that wants to be a Psychiatrist starts as Psychologist and Psychotherapist ? I am in Psychology and Psychotherapy and i started med school too. I did that in order to be in that area little bit erlier and have some experience already in mental health field job before i start my residensy as Psychiatrist. I like Psychiatry/ Neuropsychiatry/Neuropsychology a lot ! In Europe Neuropsychiatry not really exists as a fellowship after Psychiatry residensy .We mostly do that from the point of you view of Neuropsychology. That's why i try to do both.

I go to a private college and I major in psychology with the minor of biology starting my sophomore year. I am inclined to think that although it's true that a psychiatrist can do both medication management and therapy, the therapy is rarely reaching the standard that the psychologist works at.

Hi, i dont mean to word vomit my entire situation here as i dont know if you will even see this, but I would love to have your input. Im sorry this is so long but I hope you will have the time to read and respond ( i absolutely get it if you dont!) I just turned 18 and i live in india. Here medical school is straight out of high school. Unfortunately, due to whatever circumstance, i didn't have biology as a subject in 11th and 12th grade, but i had physics, chemistry and mathematics. Which means i am not eligible to even give NEET, the medical entrance test in india as bio is a prereq. Now this is Unfortunate as i realized my interest in psychiatry pretty late. Im done with high school now and if I choose to go the medical route, I'd have to redo 12th and graduate again with bio as a subject and prepare for the incredibly difficult medical entrance test here in india. And im not a big fan of science, I feel like i would hate the journey of med school but I would love actually practicing as a psychiatrist. Also I am not interested in any other field of medicine, nothing else fascinates me.(apart from neuroscience, psychiatry, and maybe cognitive science which im aware is not a medical field) On the other hand, my career counsellor recommended that I prepare for the law entrance test and forget about medicine. I've been doing that for a couple months now and i enjoy the preparation much more than the science courses! Law school is also right after high school too by the way i forgot to mention. So I was thinking of studying law and psychology, as i can practice an area of law that im interested in and also practice therapy on the side. I like this idea and the culmination of both the fields. This is within my reach as well and i wouldn't have to retake any courses. Also i am not sure if i would enjoy psychiatry or psychology practice more? I know psychiatry is the scientific, biology aspect of it ( sorry for my poor framing of words) whereas psychology is the behavioural and talk therapy aspect. If I dont enjoy science, does it mean i would enjoy being a psychologist more? I guess I do want to be more involved with a client at a personal level, and psychology is better for that. But there is just something about psychiatry that makes it so appealing to me and I cannot stop thinking about it. It's broader in scope, you can prescribe medications, and also help with the more severe mental disorders which a psychologist cannot. I think I may have glamourized it too much in my head haha. I know 18 is not that late and it just means that I will become a doctor one year later than my peers, but I want to pick what is in my best interest and at this point, im very confused. Redoing a year sounds very very stressful to me, i know i will struggle with science, also i have no choice but to study in india, due to financial reasons, so these are my options. I would like to know what you think, and get your opinion. I can't expect you to fix my life for me haha but with all your experience in the field and extensive knowledge of both psychiatry and psychology, and given my particular situation, what do you think i should do?

Hi Namratha, It seems wise for you to get as much information as possible about the fields that you might be interested in, e.g. law, psychiatry, etc. After that it may be good to trust your feelings and do what feels right to you. Right after you wake up in the morning may be a good time to check what feels right to you. Peter Goertz

im unsure if i should major in Psychiatry or try to get an MS in Clinical Counseling/psychology .. Psychiatry requires more math and science and you actually go to med school? Did you have to deliver babies and stuff and cut open people/perform doctor related work and would you say it’s harder than the MS in Clinical Counseling degree? Then again maybe Psychiatry has more flexibility when it comes to career options than just your degree in clinical counseling only.

The reason it is common nowadays to have a psychologist is simply because psychiatrists are not trained sufficiently or competent in any way beyond prescription of medication. Psychologists have 4 years undergraduate pure psychology (human behaviour, emotions, thinking and more) and at least 2 years masters degree in clinical psychology for diagnosing, assessing and at the same time integrate all psychological theories for the benefit of the patient. Psychiatrists have 6 years unrelated medicine with about 6 weeks basic psychiatry (not psychology) and during residency are majorly concerned with diagnosing and prescribing medication. As a patient I will avoid psychiatrists pretending to be therapists like the plague. They are NOT. They can if they are good help with meds but also frequently overprescribe.
