I have loved the idea of psychology and anything related for a few years now. I'm 17 and I'm leaning towards becoming a psychiatrist. I loved this video and how you were honest about the positives and negatives of becoming a psychiatrist. I can tell you love your career and you're good at it. This video was really helpful.
Psychiatry is nothing but a bunch of pill pushers and con-artists. Watch this documentary to learn more about the truth of this corrupt profession. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zg0TFkFDtyA.html

I loved your video! I’ve had my heart set on psychiatry for many years now but I have been having my second thoughts due to the suffering of my own mental issues. When you said “schizophrenia is contagious” at first I got so scared. Glad you were joking 😅
People are suffering at the hands of doctors , it will all soon come to light. There are tens of thousands suffering and new members joining every day because they cannot get help from the medical community.

so… I seriously thank you for posting this! I have been wanting to be a Psychiatrist ever since i was 16 when I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I am already a sophomore in pre-med with a major in biology and a minor in Psychology. I am super scared of how difficult this road is gonna be and the tremendous debt i’m gonna be in, but when i become a psychiatric physician it’s gonna be like a hobby instead of a job. any wise words from you, would be amazing!
Thank you Ashley! The fact, that you have dealt with psychiatric issues yourself, can be an advantage as a psychiatrist, as you may have more insight into what your patients are dealing with. Peter Goertz
Thanks so much for making this video Dr. Goertz. It was a privilege to hear your insight and experience. Thanks for sharing. Future Psychiatrist, Steven Civils 😊
Hi, doctor! I'm 17 and I'm going to apply for med school next year in my home country. The specialty I'm looking forward to applying for is psychiatry. I've always found myself being interested in the malfunctionality of the brain and the bio-psychosocial consequential results. I personally have an aim to continue my aftergraduate education in Switzerland where the residency of psychiatry and psychotherapy is six years minimum. It's a satisfying field and I want to help improving the quality of mental health care system. My main aim is to create an innovative preventative plan for patients with psychotic disorders and more specifically catatonic schizophrenia. This video was amazing and I hope you have a great day!
Hi Kamilla, Thank you for your comment. If you are passionate about becoming a doctor/psychiatrist, it is worth all of the work in medical school. Peter Goertz
You sir are by far the most normal and rather cool psychiatrist I have come across lol . Love your sense of humor. I did my residency at Henry Ford in Jackson and wow … I’ll leave it at that to be respectful lol
Wonderful video. I finished my undergrad this month and am working on getting my prerequisites in order to apply for medical school in the next year or so. It seems to be such a daunting process but it feels right. Thank you for this holistic summary of the profession.
Im a year and half away from finishing med school. Currently thinking about what specialty to go into. Thank you so much for making this video. I can definitely see myself doing psychiatry.
I didnt know that there are so many aspects in psychaitric treatment. Thank you for informative video. A friend of mine in interested in becoming a psychaitrist.
I wish I started sooner I am 25 and finally figured out this is what I want to do… I got a long road ahead of me. I’m hoping I crack down hard on school and get moving so I could become one ASAP. Thanks for the transparency here I learned some things, didn’t deter me at all however.

Hello doctor. I get here after I saw your reply from my comment in someone's video. I can't control myself from laughing thinking that I made that reply 1 year ago, during those time I'm so confused to what career should I take and yeah I'm a sophomore already under BS Psychology program and this sem we have two majors, psychological statistic and biological science. I just found out that I'm not really good in research and I have problem understanding the terms but I'm still doing my best to pursue what I really want as today there's a lot of news about teenagers committing suicide and people facing different mental health issues. Thank you for this informative video. I hope someday I can comment here again while wearing my uniform and my pin.
I would imagine being a Psychiatrist helps you in your personal relationships. But, this could largely be through managing your own self, given your education and experience. (Plus, for fellas of our age, wisdom tends to come with the passing years.) However, are there times when being a Psychiatrist feels like a detriment, when dealing with family or friends? I'm sure that would largely depend on the other person, but I can imagine some of my family or friends feeling intimidated by talking with me, if I were a Psychiatrist. Something like: "What? Are you analyzing me?"

Are there any specific courses I should take in high school that will help with my post-secondary studies (I’m going into my final year next year)? I’m very interested in psychiatry, but I do not have anyone to really answer my questions. It’s nice having a one on one conversation with an actual psychiatrist. Thanks!
Hi Amanda, Thank you for your comment! It may be best to balance being goal directed with having fun. So you could take courses like biochemistry or biology, but also art, if you enjoy art. My understanding is, that medical schools like applicants, who have varied interests. Peter Goertz
Thanks for the valuable information! Do you think people w/ anxiety can make good psychiatrists? My mental health has been bad this past year - but I want to believe I’ll eventually overcome my struggles. I don’t know if anyone around me believes in me, but I want to believe in myself. I want to be a psychiatrist to help people.
Thank you Amber for your comment addressing this important issue. In my opinion having had your own mental health struggles can be a big advantage as a psychiatrist, because you have a deep understanding of the patients. A former colleague of mine, an excellent psychiatrist, was hospitalized for bipolar disorder, soon he was back at work doing a great job. Peter Goertz
Hello, I’m so happy I came across your video. I am a junior in highschool interested in being a psychiatrist. Can you recommend what I should study before I get to college? Is there any lessons/ activities I should do to be prepared?
Hi Hyewo, in my opinion the most important thing is to enjoy your life. Be a well rounded person and have fun with friends. Enjoy your hobbies. You can take advanced classes for biology and chemistry in high school, if you like. Peter Goertz
I’m applying to med school as a non traditional student aiming for psychiatry and like any med student I’m questioning if I have what it takes... do you have any questions I should ask myself to feel more confident about this path? Like do I have specific skills or is organic chemistry grades the best indicator of my abilities ? Etc.?
Hello Sir, I am a 3 years in high school, and the thought about understanding the human mind and emotion seemed very interesting to me. I was wondering if you could give me an estimate on how long the path of becoming a psychiatrist was, and how much effort it takes to start from high school.
The time may vary somewhat from country to country, however there are many years of training including medical school and psychiatric residency. If you are interested and motivated, in my opinion the effort is worthwhile. Peter Goertz
What books or studies could you recommend for being prepared for problematic patients with symptoms that can be difficult to solve, i have a bad feeling that if i pursue this career that i won't know the right answers for specific patients and in the end feel kind of useless.
Learning directly from supervising psychiatrists at work may be best. Even they can often have difficulty. Nobody has all of the answers, which makes the field more interesting to me.

Hey doc, will medical school teach you a deep understanding of psychology or will you have to do research on your own time to get a deeper understanding of psychology? I hope my question makes sense.
Hi Dwight, No, medical school will not teach you a deep understanding of psychology. However in a psychiatric residency a significant amount of psychology will be taught. Peter Goertz
Hello! I’m currently a pre-med students with my eyes on psychiatry. I recently shadowed a psychiatrist and it appeared the bulk of her work was 15 minute medication management appointments. As someone with a particular interest in performing psychotherapy in conjunction with medication management, I was a little startled by her approach as it seems to be the norm in psychiatry. I whole-heartedly believe this is the correct path for me, but I worry about psychotherapy’s place in psychiatry since the pharmacology revolution. Is it still possible to be a psychiatrist who practices a significant degree of psychotherapy while also medication managing? Thanks:) I appreciate your videos!
Hi Claire, Thank you for your comment. I agree with your approach and enjoy doing psychotherapy with patients. I do a certain amount of psychotherapy. Peter Goertz

Hi Anthony, Being aware of your feelings, you are already ahead of the game. Mindfulness, e.g. via yoga, tai chi, or meditation can help, as can psychotherapy. I went to medical school in Germany, so I am not so familiar with the details of getting into medical school here. Best, Peter
Hi Doctor, I just started college and interested in becoming a psychiatrist. Any tips on what major to choose and or minors to add, Thank you for this video as well
Hi Rodney, It seems most important to me to major/minor in fields that you enjoy. Psychology, biology and biochemistry would all be useful for medical school. Peter
I am deciding between psychiatry or psychology...but i am drawn more towards the first option..the thing is it's i think a lot harder and you got to learn about pharmacy and a lot more . I just don't know if i have all it takes
Sir I am a deeply empathetic person and I do feel very strongly about others. I have been planning to join psychiatry from the time I entered medicine but my conservative family keeps trying to deter me saying it will be emotionally too much for me. How do you keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed by all the human suffering you see on a day today basis ? Do you have any advice? Would we become tougher once we start practicing and learn to adapt ?
Thank you for asking this Anoopa. It is an important issue. I think every person has to make this decision for themself. Being a psychiatrist, or a physician in general, can be emotionally challenging(recreation is very important). Once you have made the decision, it seems important to set boundaries with people who want to deter you. Peter Goertz

I’m 18 and am thinking of becoming a psychiatrist because I would consider myself passionate about helping others as a result of suffering from mental illnesses first hand. I feel as though it would be a fulfilling career choice and would fit my personality wonderfully. I am however concerned about the struggles of school and student debt. I am aware that med school is not easy, and it’s very pricey. Do you have any comments/advice on how to get through that?
Hi Leo, This might be a topic for another video. In general psychotherapy might help in making career decisions. Regarding the aspect of your own struggles the following video might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-joiCPDk8I-Y.htmlsi=Mny21KlBRkULVhX9
I’m 36 and have a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design with a minor in Psychology. I’ve felt a pull for many years to go into Psychology/Psychiatry. Am I too old to switch careers?
Hi Laura, I once worked with a medical student in her 60’s who was excellent, so in my opinion it is not too late to switch careers, however it would involve a lot of work. It may be wise for you to get as much information as possible about psychology and psychiatry, and then see what your overall gut feeling about a possible switch in careers is. Also, psychology and psychiatry can be quite different. Psychiatry would involve 4 years of medical school and 4 years of residency. Peter Goertz
Would the fact that I was placed on a suicide hold when I was 15 (it was for major depression that resulted in a period of suicidal thoughts and actions and hearing voices and having hallucinations) stop me from being a psychiatrist? I've heard that it can up my chances at becoming one, but I'm not sure and thought you might be able to provide me with a better answer. Thanks!
Hey Doctor! I'm currently a high school student who's interested in going into Psychiatry. After residency, are psychiatrists able to practice any field of psychiatry they wish or can they only specialize in one field of psychiatry? I don't know if I phrased my question right so let me know if you don't understand. Thank you in advance!
Thank you for your comment! After residency you can be a general adult psychiatrist. If you do a fellowship after residency, you can be a child psychiatrist, a forensic psychiatrist etc., and you can also work as a general adult psychiatrist. Ultimately you can choose what you do. Peter Goertz

Hello Sir! .. My chronological years on earth are 58 at present, I still feel youthful. I had birthed and raised to adulthood 3 lovely children. Now, I am a junior in a Bachelors in Social Work program. Is going to medical school to work as a Psychiatrist a realistic desire/ goal to work towards? I already know with my temperament, and just all around blah blah blah I could do well in this field. Are there psychiatrist working at 70-80 years of age? If I keep living, I am going to be doing something right? 😊 .. When I die, I'll stop. Hahaha.. Thank you kindly for your advice.
Hi Duena, Thank you for your comment/question. A psychiatrist can potentially work in their 70’s/80’s. However, if you mainly want to do psychotherapy, you could do this as a social worker. Peter Goertz
I’m just worried that I won’t be able to do psychotherapy as well as the medicine part. I want to actually connect to patients to better help them with medicine instead of just seeing them for 15 minutes: which most people say gives a psychiatrist a bad rep. Idkk
Hi Michael, That is a valid concern. However I am fortunate, I remain able to do a good amount of combined psychotherapy/medication management in 45 minute visits. Peter Goertz

@@goertzpsychiatry9340 thank you!! do you ever have times where you have a hard time helping someone with their problems? If so what do u end up doing?
That happens a lot. It is often not easy. Social and drug/alcohol problems are often connected with psychiatric problems. I just do the best I can. It helps me to realize, that so called small things, like making a patient smile, can make a big difference.
@@goertzpsychiatry9340 I'm happy to know that. I'm a medical student from India & I'm interested in psychiatry & pediatry & wish to choose between them for speciality . I genuinely would like to know whether psychiatry is worth the medical school .
I am considering trying to be a psychiatrist, but I am really interested in doing a lot of psychotherapy as well as diagnosing patients and prescribing medication. From what I've seen online, though, it seems like most psychiatrists do just prescriptions now and refer patients to clinical psychologists for psychotherapy. Do you think I would be able to do a lot of psychotherapy as well as a psychiatrist, or should I go into clinical psychology instead?
Thank you for your comment! I enjoy doing both psychotherapy and medication management. I am able to do a good amount of both in my current work. Often it serves the patient well to do both with one person. It can also be less expensive in the long run. Best, Peter Goertz

Thank you! I’m 19 and am planning on becoming a psychiatrist. I’m trying to find out everything about it and so far, it seems like the perfect job for me. :) Edit: You explain how suicide is bound to happen with a patient when working long enough as a psychiatrist. I first leaned towards therapy, but after losing a friend to suicide not long ago I officially decided psychiatry to help others work through their struggles through possible medication and psychotherapy. How do you cope with losing a patient to suicide? Does/has it caused you to get anxious with other patients for awhile after? Anxious about them doing the same?

In my opinion it is wise to trust your own best judgement, rather than accepting the opinions of others(including mine). It sounds like a good psychotherapist, and possibly a good psychiatrist might be helpful to you.
To my knowledge, among physicians anesthesiologists and psychiatrists have the highest rate. Psychiatry can be challenging, but also rewarding. Peter Goertz

Hi Valerie, Thank you for addressing this important issue. Every medication is a double edged sword: it can cause helpful effects and it can cause harmful effects. The dilemma facing a doctor is, that it is impossible to entirely predict what effects a medication will have on a given patient at a given time. It is important for patients to be informed of this.
