I always have believed that REDACTED was an early test for "Grandpa Semi" before he was actually scrapped and turned into Gaster

One of the funniest personal explanations for this REDACTED characters is Toby wanting to shove some character into the stable for some joke but ending up hating the joke and being like "you know what, no, fuck it" so he just shoves the entire script into limbo and scribbles over the character because he hates the joke he came up with one late night. Is this true? I don't know, but it's a funny thought.

The only proof I need for Mystery Man to be legit is he was cool as hell in Halloween Hack 😎

personally to me the sprite always looked like it was redacted too, like toby took a white brush so we can't see the original design (which actually plays into my theory that this was an early version of the mysterman fun event that was accidentally left in)

Actually, what's interesting with the Gaster disappear noise is that only the follower that claims to hold a piece of him plays this sound as well. Unless you count Clamgirl in the later patch, but there's an argument there for her being a full-on possession by Gaster himself, due to the conversation being about "Suzy" (Susie). Especially with her entire head changing to just an eye.

Redacted being a cut form of "Hapstablook" actually makes a lot of sense. I imagine it was supposed to be a room that would show what they looked like before they became Mettaton, like a... "ghost" of who they once were.

I always liked the idea that Gaster widely represents gaming creepypasta/unused game asset hunting in the early days of the internet. Some unused data COULD be or COULD NOT be Gaster, but unused data is diegetic to Toby's worlds just like how saving and loading is. So REDACTED, the stable, grandpa semi, the followers, mysteryman, and even unused areas as a whole could be considered "fragments" of Gaster because he exists in the depths of the game that nobody is supposed to see. A part of the game that sometimes leaks through in the form of FUN events.

i feel like redacted is a pretty obvious early version of the mysteryman room. same general shape, both in waterfall, both have "gaster" in them. my personal theory is that redacted was removed for being way too on the nose. there would be absolutely no mystery to mysteryman if he spoke in wingdings, or spat you into the soundtest, or used the theme in the sans grillby date etc. also it being locked behind dogcheck is like, a dead giveaway that its not canon

Redacted being Napstablooks Dad is now headcanon in my mind now Is Gaster can have 2 sons then Redacted can have family too!!!!

My theorie is that redacted is just a first draft for the mystery man. I think Toby knew he wanted gaster in waterfall somewhere but didn't know where so he made the stable first but I would assume realize that that's kind of weird and did it the way that we see it in the game now with the secret door. Redacted's room still exists as just a leftover from game development perhaps

redacted's design actually reminds me of Sadako from The Ring It's look kinda looks like it has hair draped over the head/face and a weird arm hunched position like Sadako is contemporarily depicted like I mean if it was really meant to be one of Napstablook's family members, a silly reference like that would probably make sense.

My theory is that Redacted is what's left of a very early version of a scene with Sans, because of the fact that "Premonition" is playing. I think that the original scene was supposed to be another conversation with Sans, similarly to the one that happens at Grillby's, and that Toby decided to scrap, but while deleting the code, he just decided to say "y'know what fuck it", cobbled together some semi-crypric dialogue and decided to keep it in.

I REALLY do think that the removal of redacted (and possibly grandpa semi from the story) are what inspired toby to create gaster. It really lines up to me with how gaster's room has a similar shape to room water redacted because toby probably based the mystery man event off of the removal of the original stable from the game. It has a very similar feel to something like Mario 64 B3313 where a good chunk of is DOES have grounds in actual removed content or datamined test levels, and then turns those concepts into a playable game and story based around the idea of removed content and early test builds. It fits really well with UT's metanarrative of aspects of a video game being portrayed as parts of the world and things that have a real impact on the game. This also very much lines up with pretty much all gaster related things being added noticeably late into development, because it very likely had never been planned from the start and the concept of it came later on in development drawing inspiration from what had actually been removed from the game.

I believe REDACTED actually IS cannon! Or atleast officially recognized, I belive there was a piece of official art that featured all the characters, and in it was both mysteryman AND redacted! And they where both removed later on, (in typical gaster fashion.) I believe this had happened twice actually, in two different art pieces. Though I do not remember the specifics of what they were.

I honestly think that while redacted isn't gaster now thanks to the video, i do think there is still importance to them. Toby knew that people would find this anyway, because it is explicitly redacted. I don't think the original script just said "redacted" so unless it's a joke to toby I do think he still expected people to find it. One theory I remember hearing a long time ago was that deltarune, when completed, would un-redact the room. I don't think this will happen... but I'm holding out hope lol

I think what happened is Redacted & Stable were meant to be part of a less serious (optional?) puzzle, but Toby didn't finish it, so he put it aside, naming the character redacted in the files. Maybe later he got inspired by it to make a whole new story and character, W. D. Gaster, named after the Wing Dings font the scrapped character used.

I think "Redacted" was the original design of Gaster, and the stable was the original concept for the Fun Event. Toby has stated that DELTARUNE is based on a fever dream about an ending of a game which (at the time) didn't exist. There's a possibility that Gaster appeared in said dream, and that "Redacted" is a more faithful representation of how Gaster appeared in the fever dream. Over time, Gaster's appearance changed to the "Mystery Man" sprite, and becoming the mysterious yet (seemingly) goofy scientist that we've talked to on Twitter. I mean, you can't tell me that the guy who fell into an alternate universe/his own game, built a giant energy source that has several puzzles, can re-arrange itself, and blasts a banger 24/7 is not at least _somewhat_ of a dork.

Really random hypothethis: Although I have my own speculation on who redacted is, if it was an amalgamate of a Napstablook family member and some other monster/monsters, I think maybe at least one of the other components would be a gyftrot and/or Aaron, although Gyftrot would be more likely since Aaron is already part of Lemon Bread.

I'm completely on board with the idea of Redacted being a scrapped amalgamate. Adding on to your ideas about it, the term "redacted" fits in with the amalgamates and their creepy, mysterious vibe. Similar to the blank names of the memoryheads or the garble of text that shows up when you try attacking some of the amalgamates.

You know. Redacted really reminds me of the egg man from deltarune. When he disappeared the dialog of his presence only notes the fact that there wasnt someone here. "Well, there is a man behind tree/ well there is no man behind the tree" it was something like that, I cant remember off the top of my head. Later the stuff with the egg in itself " what egg?" And the fact that it never leaves you. Also there is a real heated debate with the valentine's letter. Maybe toby decided to remake this character into whatever he is doing with the egg man. Tbh good for him, he got a promotion from "redacted" to "egg man" . Other people say it's the river person. Not redacted, the letter. Hmm, but just a thought.

Theory: Gaster was LITERALLY scattered across time and space. More accurately, Undertale. He is scattered across Undertale. Thats why you hear his leitmotif so much. Thats why you can find a lot of Goner NPCs. Thats why Sans and Papyrus showed up.

You saw a blue snail with blue jacket and brown snail with violet outlines, it was confetti, a romantic atmosphere filling your nostrils... You saw an old doll, sitting and sleeping on hay, there's a sign saying "Do not disturb". The skeleton looking puppet remains asleep.

Isn't it true that there was a Vynil or something, that had both the [Redacted] and the MysteryMan sprites in the cover, but later on MysteryMan's was replaced by a Heart while [Redacted] was left there untouched? The only proof I have of this is a not-so-high quality image on Google from a portuguese language source, so could someone with more experience looking for old images please help me confirm this? That'd be much appreciated! Anyways, if that's true, then that'd point more towards MysteryMan being Gaster, because it was purposefully taken out as something that must not be seen much yet; all while leaving [Redacted] there as a quirky extra to aknowledge its existence

A lot of the mysteries you said in the intro aren't actually mysteries. Chara climbed the mountain to suicide. Alphys's writings were on the blueprints. Undyne hired muffet to kill frisk. Nice video!

I am convinced Redacted was supposed to be Grandpa Semi, the only ACTUALLY redacted character of Undertale (you can see mentions of him in Toby's notes but only through bleeding ink, but he never appears, he is never mentioned in the games, unlike Gaster). Maybe he would have been a jokester like Sans but enthusiastic like Papyrus, exactly in the middle - explains his name, Semi Serif, half serif, when he is the grandpa of a sans serif font and a serif font. But very early on, Toby removed Semi from the equation, redacted him, and at some point Gaster got into the equation but as a character /metaphorically/ redacted from the game, instead of actually redacted. What remains of Semi is a scribbled on sprite in a test room for transparency and Wingding you can't access to without debugging.

What about the merch that came out, it was a tote bag or something similar that had sprites of every character on it, including Mystery Man AND Redacted but then either one of them or both got removed when they updated the merch. I bet Toby just plays into it to keep fucking with everyone wondering which is Gaster

I believe, because of the stable's location, REDACTED was either an early Napstablook or maybe even an early plan for Mad Dummy/Mew Mew's role on the farm, since the ghosts are probably all related. Plus, kinda looks like a ghost if you squint.

A good case for Mysteryman not being Gaster is the fact that we see him at all, since Gaster at that point is completely scattered across time and space. Rather, Mysteryman is the man behind the tree in deltarune, who has many of the same properties such as disappearing and smiling. Mysteryman is related to Gaster obviously (maybe being one of the individuals spoken to by Gaster), but it feels mostly like a red herring to hoodwink us. Also Redacted is probably a test version of Gaster we were never meant to see, which is why all of its text is redacted and speaks in Winddings, Toby just didn't really want us to see or use it as much evidence

I think that Redacted is called Redacted for a reason, that being because it was completely scrapped from the game and "redacted". There's no bizarre lore connection, it's just a scrapped Gaster draft.

It might also be a beta memoryhead before he decided to make them connected to deltarune. Makes sense since we don't see the memoryheads in the epilogue

whenever i see stuff like this, i remember that toby fox is kinda like an edgelord in the way that he makes the most spooky stuff in the middle of no where. redacted looking like that and speaking in wingdings and stuff could be toby being funny and edgy because wingdings ARE pretty like unsettling as text in the way that its mysterious and alien you know?

as a sidenote, I highly believe that redacted is actually the first iteration of the gaster easter egg, being that he has a very similar interaction to the mystery man, just somewhat in reverse, being that he appears as you get closer rather than disappearing once you approach and interact either that, or he might be the the 'original gaster', or the room he was supposed to be encountered in, however due to his shattering this ceased to exist along with himself (this admittedly might be a stretch) also, hot take, what if the other two gaster is referring to in entry 13 is actually two other pieces of himself? WAIT if the stable is a removed object, that implies the redacted sprite that appears in it is a horse, right? what chess piece uses the horse as a symbol representing it? the knight

Redacted being an amalgamate is a possibility that makes a lot of sense honestly, especially some of the amalgamates(mostly the memoryheads) seemingly having refferences to gaster. The attacks that resemble gasters head without cracks, the fact that they seem to be partially made of a gaster blaster, and the whole "calling through the phone" thing. Maybe redacted was planned to be similar to the memoryheads in having refferences to gaster. The memory heads honestly do feel a bit out of place compared to the other amalgamates, especially since we never see them return to their families ...

Redacted could actually just be Lemon Bread - it contains Shyren's sister who would probably end up around this part of Waterfall after the amalgamates were returned to their families

I don't remember if this was ever proven, but I remember early in the underminers reddit when people put the most effort into researching this stuff. Someone said the "sprite" used for what we refer to as redacted here was a piece of what makes up Muffet's battle sprite. Even if that specifically isn't true, I think at least what it implies is. Redacts was something toby was toying with creating an event for, but at some point didn't like it and cut it. Moved the room to an unused room, hit the flag that makes it unloadable due to dogcheck, and moved on. But the sprite used there likely pointed to a specific place in the array, and rather than do the same he did with the room and just "move" it, he overwrote it. Just continued on from that place in the array. So what we are seeing is the game loading whatever visual data he put in that space. Though with the dimensions the original sprite had, so it doesn't look quite right. That is what I always believed anyway. It always just was a bit clouded by the fact Toby had some intentionally "unfinished" type hidden things he wanted or expected people to find. This one was supposed to NOT be found. And it really wouldn't have been because dogcheck was the way he stopped people trying to find the intentional stuff in the data accidentally finding the actual unfinished cut things. Its just like, SUPER in line with what he was going for with gaster so its easy to think it meant something. I mean hell, it might have even been cut content from trying to implement gaster! Don't really think so though, because of it's development being obviously around the time of the waterfall section and gaster stuff didn't really show up in data files till much later. IMO, with how the animation is identical to Napstablook fading in and out when you approach in the farm, I agree with the other guy in the comments. It might have been an early event based on Mettaton before he was a robot. Would even sort of fit with the development around the time of waterfall stuff because I think Toby intended to go a different direction with mettaton early on (as evidenced by the "you can marry a robot!" claim in the kickstarter never making it into the game)

I have seen this on another theory about "redacted", although I don't remember which right now, but it does make sense, in my opinion: the "redacted" sprite isn't meant to represent an "amorphous white blob being", but it's literally "redacted", and the white paint stoke is hiding what/who "redacted" is truly supposed to be.

For the number of times you'd need to play to get the mystery man fun value, it takes 693 times for you to have just barely gotten past 50% chance of getting mystery man at least once, 692 times is less than 50%

11:24 could just be sans, as he watches you throughout the game, waterfall having different dialogue for when you perform a concert with shyren, where in pacifist sans started selling toilet paper tickets, but if you killed papyrus (?) and start a concert, it just saya a hooded figure is watching

It is implied that Chara had a traumatizing pre-mountain childhood, and quite possibly did not intend to survive the experience of falling down a hole. - Asriel says that Chara's reason for climbing the mountain "wasn't a happy reason". - Chara's room has a minifridge. This is something that indicates that Chara had food hoarding tendencies, which are common in children who have gone through serious abuse or neglect. - Chara was willing to commit a very slow and painful form of suicide. We _know_ it was slow because of the tape in the True Lab where the family was begging Chara to not die, which they would not have done if they just found Chara already dead. - Where did Chara get that knife from? Did they bring it with them? (This evidence is less strong.) - Finally, it is said in the prologue that there is a legend that people who climb the mountain never return. (Though it is possible the legend came into being _after_ Chara left, so this is also less strong as evidence.) Bonus: Frisk's reasons for climbing the mountain are unlikely to have been happy either: - Frisk's starting equipment is a bandage. The check text for it is that it has "already been used multiple times" (ew). Frisk is perfectly willing to reapply the bandage as a healing item when injured again later (double ew). - The Abandoned Quiche has special text for dropping it: "You leave the Quiche on the ground and tell it you'll be right back." - Even if the legend about Mt. Ebott being a mountain that nobody returns from wasn't present in Chara's time, it was _absolutely_ present by Frisk's time. Asriel even asks why Frisk would climb a mountain given those stories. - (This is less clear; it is likely that these options exist to be funny, not to imply something as serious as this.) Even if Chara is the narrator, I believe Frisk to be the one in charge of _which_ ACTs show up in the actual battles. If so, why is it that Frisk's go-to conflict resolution strategy is flirting? _With adults?_ This is age-inappropriate behavior. Someone has to have exposed them to this kind of behavior, or if not, at _least_ nobody paid enough attention to them to keep them out of such things or explain them in an age-appropriate manner. Like... I'm not saying someone was grooming Frisk, but I'm not _not_ saying it either. I hope this gives you something to be sad/distressed about!

My personal theory is that redacted was a scrapped Napstablook sprite that Toby Fox scribbled over, and after he realized leaving the stable sends the player to the sound test room, he thought it would have been funny to screw with the fanbase by making it speak in wingdings and renamed the sprite to redacted

There is a big possibility that Redacted simply isn't relevant to the story (at least back then), and that we are looking to deep into it. But still I love theorizing about it.

I think the best evidence against Redacted being Gaster is the fact that his room is blocked by dog check, and on top of that, the ABC123 sound file in the code tells people not to dig through the files looking for secrets. I think meticulously combing the files for information is where Toby draws the line for secret hiding

Unrelated, but: when going against some hard boss, like Jevil, Ceroba, Spamton NEO, TS!Underswap sans, Martlet, or any other hard battle, in life or in games, remember to take breaks I say this mainly because, I remember struggling to Jevil, almost beating it after trying almost the whole night, and next day winning first try, same for Spamtom NEO lol, for TS!Sans it was a shorter time gap, but still worked, breaks can really make a difference!
