My cheap $35 dollar axe handle just broke after about 5 years of seasonal use. I bought a new handle and will fit it… my question is - is it worth replacing the shaft of just buy a new axe.
I take you through the steps of replacing an axe handle, the big question; Is it really worth it?
Watch Woodcraft, DIY and Art spring to life on Norwegian Wood
This cheap thing gave me a struggle.. and I eventually had to give it up and put on a another axe head I had lying around. The shape of the cheap axe head was probably made with not being able to fix it in mind. As you can see from this picture it first gets more narrow towards the middle and then widens again. I am not going to buy an axe from this company again. And the answer to the question is No. The time and money spent on the handle and equipment needed far outweights the $15 save. But if the axe head was made in a normal way it would atleast be more sustainable to change it, but this thing is a bad joke.
There was definitely something wrong with the cheap axe head. It took me some time to figure it out - so I had a long struggle because I really wanted it to work. Because of this misfigured axehead dismantling the wood inside the also gave me a challenge.
Mustad & Son is one of Norway’s oldest industry companies established in 1832. They made themselves a big name selling fishhooks around 1870 and they are still in business. Their axe production started around 1890. I have no idea when this axehead is from but it looks like it have taken a beating. How to handle an Axe
I went nuts after this and bought myself a indestructible Fiskars X25, just so I would have a go to axe if I break another handle and don’t have the time to waste changing the handle. Soon I will serve a review of the Fiskars… My advice would be to buy a indestructible axe at twice the costs of a cheap one and it comes with a 25 year guarantee.

Hey my friend i think it is better to change things if we could do so safely. Sometimes we end up spending more by being a Lil cheap 😂. God bless you in Jesus name Amen. Great job on the wood chopping too I miss it lol.🙏❤

Hourglass eye in an axe is nothing specjal. It was indeed quite poor quality in terms of finishing (with the drifting leftovers still in the eye) but still perfectly usable and quite easy to fix. 30 minutes with a file on the eye would make the edge/bite disappear and make re-handling easier.

I think the only way it is worth replacing is if you have all the tools already,

Looks like a lot of hassle to change it.. I guess its only worth it if you are far away from civilization

It was, but if it was a good axehead it would be much easier.
