Jon, great forensic analysis again! Loved your vid on the “Why RINSING your car with water first is DUMB”. I think the same applies with the wheels with at least one caveat though . As you already know no pressure wash/foam is going to remove that ingress iron/brake dust on any wheel. My diamond cut when I first purchased required several applications with an iron/brake dust remover with some scrubbing. Ever since I have used Williams Racing Heavy Duty Non-Acidic Wheel Cleaner without the need to scrub, just pressure wash off. It works delicately on diamond cut wheels like those on BMWs, so as long as you follow the instructions it works! Application on dry is best like you concluded! No associations, just a very happy customer.

Once again Jon I think it’s a common sense approach if it’s a 4x4 covered in mud then rinse also I think it’s habit more than a process good video Jon Happy Easter 🐣

And your approach has been torn 6 ways to Sunday on the detailing forums! If it’s moderately dirty it doesn’t need rinsing first, chemicals have to penetrate the water first! And you dilute them more!

Good review Jon. I guess if there's nothing in it, pressure washing the arches first is simply wasting water. ps. Whilst the wheels looked clean, you appear to have quite a bit of moss in your block paving! 😂

I use vp bilberry. Always apply to a dry wheel as per the instructions. Usually use it at 7:1 but depends on the wheel. Removes 90% of the dirt with the pressure washer. I've applied it to a wet wheel and it hardly touches it. So always apply to a dry wheel.

Thanks for the video Jon. Personally I would never expect foam to wash wheels by itself to any great success. I always do my wheels first, and I blast out the arches and blast the wheels first with the Karcher. Then I use BH auto wheel and use an auto smart wheel brush for the face, and barrel brush for the rest, before Karcher rinsing, and then I blast the arches and wheels with foam when I do the rest of the car. If you want great results I don't think you can time-save / short-cut wheel cleaning. The people who say it's wasting water blasting first, are usually the ones with dishwashers, hot tubs, and garden sprinklers to keep their lawns immaculate lol, the amount of water used to pre blast is nothing. I have tried both methods and find I still have some dirt if I don't pre rinse, as brake dust is horrible stuff so best to get as much off by blasting first, and then wheel cleaner and proper wheel brush.
@MrRugbyplayer8

I’ve got much better results both on wheels and panels by going straight in with the pre wash/snow foam/ detergent etc and then blasting off rather than pre- rinsing.
@SuperchargedLlama

I tell ya what, from the title of the video this wasn't what I was expecting the test to be. Funny how preconceptions are made isn't it? I was expecting one side to pre-rinsed followed by a wet application of wheel cleaner and the other to have a dry application of wheel cleaner, both followed by agitation. I guess the use of Autofoam is somewhat similar to cleaning with Garage Therapy Wheel Shampoo via a pump foamer. Either way, dry application of whatever cleaner you choose seems to be the winner again (as has been my experience too).

Fantastic! I've tried this a few times and am finding I like going straight to pre foam first! Love it! New topic to explore... What if, for the contact wash - foam the car, and in my bucket have a rinseless solution (like N-194.) Vs in my bucket having shampoo. Hypothesis is the snow foam on the car is doing the degresing type work and the rinseless solution in the bucket is adding lubrication, water softener, pulling dirt off the wash mitt and dirt encapsulation in the bucket.

Have a maintenance client with complicated/intricate Toyota TRD matte wheels. Always had a tough time getting them 100% even with iron remover and wheel acid. One day I decided to presoak them dry and a couldn't believe how much easier it was to get them 100% . There's definitely merit to spraying chems on dry surfaces.
@tonymontana897

Some great comments regarding this. It really is common sense. If you have mud etc, then yes, you would pressure wash first. If it's just normal road grime, then don't bother wasting water. Just pre soak it, allow to dwell then rinse. After all you will be doing a contact wash anyway, so the amount of dirt removed from the initial wash is negligible.
@Captainrave
@Captainrave 2 года назад
In the same way that you recommend not rinsing before prewash, it’s the same principle with wheels. You’re only diluting the product and reducing contact with the surface.
@contra1

While using iron removers (but only for this particular case), I think it is better to prerinse the wheels to make sure that they are cold and somewhat soaked. I have seen that the unpainted brake calipers rust due to those chemicals not be easily removed from the surfaces they end up on.
@andrewlee109
@andrewlee109 2 года назад
I came to the realisation a while ago not to rinse before I either snow foamed or used the traffic film remover it’s the same with the wheels so in conclusion I agree rinsing before a wash is absolutely ridiculous and gives better results. My go to cleaners are to use pro kleen snowfoam then bucket wash with pro kleen shampoo excellent results every time. Another great video 👍
@robertwhyte3435
@robertwhyte3435 2 года назад
When you rinse first, water soaks into the dirt and whatever cleaner you're using has to displace the water to be effective. Generally it's best to spray cleaners, even car wash soap on a dry surface. Also, it's a better idea to spray cleaners from the bottom up so that deactivated/used cleaner doesn't run down onto a dirty surface and block the dirt from fresh cleaner being sprayed on. One of the exceptions to this rule is some fabrics, particularly cloth soft tops. In that case it's better to wet the cloth first so you attenuate the action of the cleaner and make rinsing all the cleaner out of the fabric easier. You really notice how important it is to spray from the bottom up when spraying cleaner on leather seats.

I fully agree Jon, even if the vehicle is really dirty, going on dry, the snow foam has more bite, it is going to be rinsed off anyway before any contact is made, so apart from the mental reassurance that more rinsing equals less chance of scratching, I would favour the going on dry method, in fact that is what I will be doing from now on, even though I was formally a rinse, rinse and more rinse kind of girl lol 😆.

Thanks for all the videos and info Jon! I’ll give this a try myself, as I just tried the foam without pre-rinse and I much prefer it. And that’s in the dusty South Australian conditions which I’d have thought pre-rinsing would be the obvious choice. If you get a chance to review Meguiars Hyper Wash I’d be interested to see what you think. It’s $60aud for a gallon here and only requires 35ml in 700ml water to produce thick foam, and a similar amount for a bucket. I’m liking it so far but keen to hear your thoughts.

A good way to wheels is to spray the wheels lightly with product, wheel cleaner, apc etc then snow foam the whole car down, then rinse the wheels then go ahead brushing and cleaning then rinse. Then you can wash the car, that’s what I do but only lightly because you don’t want it to sit for too long

Hey Jon, happy Easter. Interesting....... My thoughts on this is to blast the wheels first with a wheel cleaner to make them 'bleed' and on dry wheels. Let it do its business and then blast off and allow to dry and then follow on with the snow foam. Reason for this is the wheel cleaners tend to be powerful so in its first initial application it would loosen up most of the 'gunk' that you want to take off. Then the snow foam should help release the left-over which hopefully would be easier to loosen.
@jonnybravo3055
@jonnybravo3055 2 года назад
I think snow foam paint work dry like you said on a previous video. But Wheels are different in my opinion because they have no pre wash as you clean your alloys 1st. That means you are rubbing break dust and dirt into your wheels. I tend to rince them 1st even it only removes a small amount of dirt. Probably the best way is to use a wheel cleaner, soak and rinse with no contact 1st. It could start getting time consuming and expensive then though. In all honesty my wheels never get that dirty anyway.
@asherzz26
@asherzz26 2 года назад
I was in deep belief that a pre wash was always best until you did the other test and has completely changed the way I detail the car now and I’m straight to snow foaming rather than rinse and I stand by that now using the same theory, it feels less “scratchy” doing a contact wash as I’m by the seaside it’s mostly salt, sand and tar film

Thank you for your analytical forensics files. Keep up the good work with the inconspicuous results underneath it all. IMO in the conclusive results, you have to touch the object to physically remove the grime. Chemicals assist but you have to physically remove it via by hand or high pressure water that may cause damage overall.

This is very interesting results and definitely closer than the other test on the paintwork. I too think that snow foam is probably a bit of a poor choice for the test as I personally never have used just a snow foam on wheels, not unless i just skipped the wheels altogether(work vehicle). Personally I think BH Auto Wheels dry vs pre rinsed would be a good test because that can be used as a sort of touchless wheel cleaner. It should be interesting to see the difference in the fallout reaction between the sides as it should show if you in-fact made the wheel cleaner?

Totally agree Going with foam dry is better. Another fly in the detailing ointment, is mixing snow foam with water first before attaching to the lance. I’d use near, since the snow foam will misc with water anyway. This means the previous way of doing it means you dilute the snö foam twice. Defeating the object of getting good coverage to get the dirt off effectively, and with a more powerful combo of product. Don’t be right with it. Use it like you mean it

Great question. I'm a little and often, chemical first person. Interesting to see your take on this. Cheers. I teach driving in UK so my vehicle is my shop front. Wheel chemical first, while that bites, swap lance ends for good clingy snow foam including the wheels to ensure no drying out and kill the reaction, while that grabs and drags I agitate wheels by noodle mitt and bucket of water (deep with grit guard) swap lance back rinse and hand-wash. (different mitt) and rinse. Clay, polish or water repellent treatment after that subject to available time.

John. Try Surfex HD at 5-10% depending on the alloys dirt. Trust me. It is the dogs bollocks. Let it soak in the alloy dry without pre rinsing for 5 minutes and then rinse free. Always apply some protection on the alloys like polar seal or TW dry and shine. Really helps a lot. For those with money, gyeon wet coat is superb. Use an applicator for best results. For me a pre rinse is always advisable. As a business, car may be arriving after a long drive. Rinsing the wheels and whole car will cool all surfaces. For me that's more important than how much more cleaning happens. Chemicals and hot surfaces don't mix so our training will always be rinse first. Also tested this many moons ago and found the opposite results to what ur getting, pre rinse provided better results (but different chemicals and pressure washer used)

I always use p&s knock off as a pre cleaner then rinse off before it dries. This is a chemical made for this type of use and you will be surprised how much gunk comes off compared to simply just using water. This process allows my wheel cleaners that contain iron removers work more efficiently. I would recommend you try it out to see that with p&s knock off you can use as it a touch less clean once a week and have great results leaving little to no contaminations on the surface.

I suspect without contact washing the finger test will nearly always show dirt. I reckon the the water used for the rinse goes into the barrels and then as it flushes back, the loose dirt draws back from deep in the barrel with it. But for what it's worth I think that it's better to go dry when you can, but I kind of do foam, rinse, fall out remover, shampoo/contact.

Thank you. I would appreciate a more scientific test as this is quite important, as I think I will now change my wash routine. The point about UK climate is very relevant. I've lived in Australia for a couple of years and the road film in UK is very different. You don't need to bother with alkaline snow foams all that much in Oz (maybe Melbourne in winter) but in UK it makes a huge difference. It's very important because I suspect the same thing is true in Florida where you probably don't need a snow foam, so Matt from Obsessed Garage doesn't believe in it, which I can can understand. But he is quite influential and ppl in UK should alter his technique to add a snow foam before their car wash. There is a trade off with alkaline snow foams and effect on protection vs marring during contact wash. In my opinion in the balance of this is different in different parts of the world. But ultimately do what works and what you enjoy. Life's too short to argue, but I enjoy the process and the science of it.

Does surface cleaner for your kitchen require the sides to be wet down before you apply the chemical. We add water to dilute products, adding more water is diluting even more. Jet washing a vehicle helps to cool down any hot parts to avoid chemicals from drying out prematurely, the test is how do you compensate for the PIR. It's a non argument, so many variables including, coated wheels to non coated wheels, it's an impossible and miniscule difference that I think by the time you've finished worrying about these ideas your ready for counselling. Is this detailing or just a what if?

I think that if you spray on wheel cleaner first, that would make a difference. I always spray wheel cleaner, then snow foam, then wash, then rinse.

Would love a wheel cleaning comparison of Foamed (Lance, IK Foamer) vs Trigger sprayer wheel cleaner. Does the foam reduce the cleaning capabilities of using the same diluted product?

Been thinking about that too , I use hand spray bottle and shampoo Does foam actually help

Here is a question for you John. are snow foam lances pointless? I get the practicality of a lance and how its much quicker and easier to use than a pump sprayer but is there actually any benefit to foaming the chemical? if i put my touchless into my lance i have to put around 200ml touchless to 200ml water. but if i go ahead and use my pump prayer i can cover the car with around 75ml of touchless when diluted at 5%. what are your thoughts?

So much quicker in lance than pump sprayers for me

Kinda long video for an inconclusive result. That being said, this gave me information to ponder and make a decision on proper washing techniques. Bottom line - if it works, continue doing what you do. Thanks for the video!

Pointless test using only snow foam, you would be hitting the wheels and tyres with a dedicated wheel cleaner/brushes and they would be off the car if you were doing it properly! using an apc and brushes if you were doing the arches and suspension properly as well

Surfex 8% then wash off, followed by Korrosol and brush on alloy, Surfex and brush on tyre, then wash off again. Theory is I use less Korrosol which is by far the more expensive product. All personal preference I guess.

I always use chemicals on a dry wheel, same with paintwork. would of been a good to use surfex HD

On normally dirty tires/wheels....no way as the cleaners need to cling and let the ingredients work and when they're wet and apply those cleaners half the product runs off🤔

You need a bigger garage 🙃 my approach is kochchemie felgenblitz on dry, cold rims, 5 minute working time, then i use my trusted wheel wollies for contact cleaning IF needed, then surfex HD 1:20 all over the car, last autofoam 4% PIR with this method, the pre-wash never fails

if there is "not much in it" then save water and dont pre rinse i think is what this demonstrates. thats what i'll do going forward
@stevecade857

Even if there is little in it for cleanliness you're still saving on time, water and electricity for the extra rinse time.

I tend to find the wheel cleaner doesn't have the same bite if you was to pre Rinse first.

Not much in this I’ve tried most things. Spray on surfex to all four wheels then power off then foam. The wheels on my Audi while looking good are a nightmare to clean … it eats up far too much time of the cleaning process and the second you dip your brush in a bucket cleaning the first wheel makes that water filthy. Easily the worst job in car washing.
