I just cannot understand how a man called Roald Dahl, who was imaginative, and a genius to write those books was racist and antisemitic. To be blessed with creativity, comes from the heart, the human soul. Perhaps, he lived in an isolated world, and feared what was different, compared to what he grew up with. No excuses made, but just trying to understand the man. A man who had a famous daughter called Sophie Dahl. And she doesn’t come across to me as racist and antisemitic, and if her father was, how come she was raised to think differently? I just wonder, how much of Roald Dahl character traits are based on fact, or what has been spread about him, through gossip, speculating, and making assumptions.

I am 60 years old. Even as a kid, if found Roald Dahl’s books a bit ‘dated’. Why not allow his work to retire into history quietly, as so much of the work of other dead authors has been allowed to? The decision of the publishers to mess with text has to do with little else than money. It is always more profitable to renovate the work of the defenceless dead authors, than to risk entering into a publisher-author relationship with the all too lively young creatives of today. Roald Dahl’s work comes with the context of the time in which it was written, and with context of the personality of who wrote it. Change the text, and you betray not only the author, but history and humanity, as well.

If we are to tread such a perilous road, who gets to be the arbiter and editor of things written in the past, and what qualifies them for the task? I would suggest that no-one has, or should be afforded, the right to amend our literary heritage, however distasteful individual works may be to some modern sensibilities. These book in the 80's kids loved, And rewriting something means you can't take any part of that story from the original. For the sake of argument let's say they are true. Then simply be against the book. But saying you're against one set of editing, while for another set, is missing the point.
