Nish's point wrt Russel Brand is spot on. We should not be shocked that a powerful man with the capacity to silence critics does so. We should ask why ANYONE has the power to silence criticism to this degree. Everyone knew something of Brand's misdeeds, some was reported on in other countries, but nobody could get it out there because he had lawyers ready to sue.

'If you can't be safe working around young women, you should be sacked' A simple and effective message to predators that there are consequences that THEY are accountable for. On Brand's slide to the right, my feeling, based on what Nish said about English comedians no longer wanting to work with him, is that self-interest took him there. Money, power and a support structure that won't care if he abuses women, as long as he sells the latest conspiracy theory. Snake Oil Salesman.

First I’m in the U.K. I am not right wing. Brands reporting, that it was government coffers that funded vaccine development, which the companies suggested would be not for profit and then made HUGE profits because of the pandemic, is factual. To point out that multi global pharmaceutical companies are making squillions based on your money (via government) isn’t snake oil.

Your honesty about Russell Brand was amazing, especially after hearing so many repeat the narrative he's fed them for years as they defend him. The industry protected him , as they have done before with celebrity predators. Keeping young girls away from his dressing room was just a sticking plaster that made them feel they were "doing tbeir bit", but what about the young girls/women that would encounter him outside of "his dressing room" , who was protecting them. Ths rest of the show was great, fabulous guest .. 👍

I knew the "one bad apple" thing would come up in the policing discussion. Your guest was right to say the barrel is rotten, that's the point. The whole saying, which hardly anyone ever completes when they're busy trying to deploy it as an excuse, is: One bad apple *spoils the whole barrel*. In other words, if bad behaviour is left unchecked it DOES ruin the whole organisation! The likes of Cressida Dick don't realise what they are actually saying when they half use this phrase.

While accusations are not convictions, when a company (or the like) feels the need to have policies in place, like not allowing young women alone into someones dressing room - questions need to be asked about why that person was/is still allowed to work there. Also great hearing from Logan and that he still has hope, if political will acts to make significant changes, even as dire as it seems to be now.

Just found you today and listened to you while making soup (boring old leek and potato sorry Nish). Having always voted and believed it being necessary as a woman I became more aware the older I got. However, how deeply ignorant I was became apparent when I finally managed to drag myself back into education at the age of 43 in 2013 after being written off during my school life. In 2015 I eventually started my undergraduate BA snd critical thinking blew my mind needless to say I became aware of nuances in education, business, health, society and politics that had completely passed over me previously. This resulted in more hope and hopelessness than ever. How mainstream media rather than being the fourth state has become the equivalent to 18th century coffeehouses for generating societal norms which is increasing the equity gaps in society. Such as the dialogue during covid of victim scaping “undeserving poor” to “underlying issues” lead me to further disengagement from politics and mainstream media. Yet the student in me wanted to still participate and critically assess politics, this has resulted in me searching out independent news outlets that are still credible and balanced. You have been added to my growing list and will be looking forward to your future debates. Sorry for the terribly drawn out comment basically, I’m saying thanks I really enjoyed listening and will be in the future too. Thanks Kersty

Sorry Coco, but the right side if definitely better for Nish. After some extensive research (aka checking Wikipedia) I found that both of Nish's appearances on Have I Got News For You were on the left (Ian's team) and resulted in losses. Meanwhile, 11 of his 14 appearances on Mock the Week were on the right (the 'guest' team) and all were wins for that team. I neglected to check Never Mind the Buzzcocks, but I doubt the results would have changed the outcome.

@@mygenericusername that's a good point. Assuming QI lists their guests from left to right, he's won (or tied for first with Phil) more often on the right. For 8OOTC, all three appearances were on the right with two wins and a loss. Finally, for 8OOTCDO he has one appearance each side, and both were wins for the right (Jon's team). So it looks like the right is still his best side.

Can I please push back on this idea that we need to increase education on consent. I've worked in education for several years. We teach consent all the time. We've reached a point where children are anxious to hug each other because they're too worried about consent. Sexual abusers know perfectly well that they don't have consent. That's exactly what they want. To give the middle finger to your consent. Thats precisely why its abusive. They know full well that they shouldn't be doing it. Rape and sexual abuse are not conducted as a result of poor quality knowledge, poor quality understanding or forgetfulness about how consent laws work. Sexually abusive people absolutely know that their behaviour is wrong. That's precisely why it excites them. Rape is NOT the consequence of poor education.

Russell Brand has been accused of abusive behaviour and rape by multiple women. He reckons it's a stitch up because of his anti-establishment views, but many are far from convinced of his innocence, especially given his widely-reported misogynistic behaviour at the time of these alleged offences. I'm not going to give my personal opinion here, because it's not particularly important. If he's done what he's accused of it would be completely unsurprising given what he's already publicly admitted to, but it's also important to remember that asserting allegations as fact is actually defamation, until they're actually proven. What I'm more interested in is the absurdly hypocritical reaction of the British establishment class and the media. Tory Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took time off from ruining the country to describe the allegations against Brand as "serious and concerning". If Sunak's actually so "concerned" about sexual impropriety, perhaps he'd care to publicly name the Tory MP who was arrested for rape in May 2022, and has been passed to stand again as a Tory candidate in the next election? The anonymous Tory MP that Sunak refuses to name isn't the only danger in the Tory ranks either, because the Tory party has a long and sickening track record of not just covering for their deviant MPs, but actually using knowledge of their scandalous behaviour to blackmail them into toeing the party line (remember the "Tory Sex Pest" list that Theresa May's whips used to bully Tory MPs into doing what they were told?). The Labour opposition also waded into the controversy with obnoxious aggro-centrist loudmouth Jess Phillips calling the accusations "harrowing" and saying that they make it seem like "makes it look like society accepts that women have to tolerate a certain amount of abuse". Perhaps these would be fair points if they weren't coming from a senior figure in Starmer's Labour Party which has given the party whip back to the drunk, abusive sexual harasser Neil Coyle; which hides the identity of an alleged sexual assaulter actually serving in Starmer's shadow cabinet; and which vindictively targeted local Hackney Labour members for raising questions about child safeguarding issues after one of their Labour right darlings down there was arrested for paedophilia. Sometimes allegations are serious and harrowing, other times they're trivial and unimportant, apparently depending entirely on whether or not the perpetrator is part of Jess Phillips' Labour right faction. It's no surprise that the entitled Westminster political class are a rotten bunch of hypocrites when it comes to allegations of sexual abuse, but it's just as bad when you look elsewhere. The Metropolitan Police tried to get in on the scandal by asking victims to come forward and make statements, but this is the same force that brutally smashed a women's protest after one of their officers (nicknamed "the rapist" by his colleagues) kidnapped, raped, and killed a woman. There are currently 143 Met Police officers under investigation for domestic abuse, of these 121 are still working as cops! 1,600 allegations of sexual assault and domestic violence over the last ten years; strip-searching of teenage girls; sharing of misogynistic abuse and pictures of female murder victims in vile WhatsApp chats; serial rapists in the Metropolitan Police ranks; and absolutely pathetic rates of rape conviction ... Is it any wonder that women don't have faith in police services like the Met when it comes to rape and sexual abuse? Then there's the UK media, with right-wing outlets like the Daily Mail, The S*n, The Times, and GB News leading the charge, all of which have employed Dan Wootton who stands accused of sickening sex crimes, catfishing, and blackmail. Their outrage would be a touch more believable if they were equally furious, rather than completely silent, when one of their own is accused of being a sex abusing monster wouldn't it? And then there's the Guardian, which has run numerous outraged articles about Russell Brand, whilst conveniently forgetting to mention the 137 columns and blog posts they paid him to write between 2006 and 2015. It's also interesting how they've completely failed to draw the obvious parallels between Brand's alleged behaviour and that of Nick Cohen who was nicknamed "the octopus" in the Guardian offices for the frequency of his groping. It's funny how Brand gets both barrels from the Guardian, but their mate Nick Cohen gets the benefit of the doubt when he claims that he was too drunk to remember whether he's sexually assaulted numerous junior female colleagues or not! It's only thanks to the brave persistence of Lucy Siegle that Cohen was ever dropped by the Guardian, after literally decades of senior execs turning blind eyes to all the women who spoke out about the horrific behaviour of one of their star columnists. The allegations against Brand are extremely serious, and his efforts to get in front of the scandal by conspiracising that they're politically motivated hardly do him any favours, but it's telling that the organisations that are making the most outraged noises about Russell Brand have all got lamentable track records when it comes to dealing with sexual misconduct in their own ranks. Whether or not Brand is guilty of what he's accused of, it's impossible to ignore the stench of hypocrisy from the Westminster establishment cabal, the Metropolitan Police, and Britain's rancid media outlets. Note one woman who the daily mail wrote in terms of Brand came out and accused the newspaper of writing rubbish!

23:23 The Brand story pisses me off. That we still have a permissive support system for behavior like his is infuriating. That we’ve had a resurgence of acceptance for misogynistic culture is mind boggling. With guys like Brand, Cosby, Weinstein, and countless others the common thread is always money and power. The support system is composed of people inside of Brand’s celebrity micro economy who themselves earn a living as long as the Brands of the world are earning. It is not in their financial best interest to go rogue and become whistleblowers. So until the insiders are financially rewarded for doing the right thing, that won’t change. This money/power support system happens with celebs. It happens in politics (Trump grabbing crotches, etc etc). It happens in corporations where the top salesman earns so much revenue (and bonuses for his chain of bosses) that he gets away with shitty behavior of all kinds. It happens with regular Joes who are the breadwinners of the family. I’m glad Me Too has brought awareness and action to this issue but, man, we have a long way to go.

I did do a double take with the switched seats! Looks as excellent as the other way - which I hasten to qualify was very excellent indeed. Russell Brand always gave me creep vibes, and I’ve got a darn good creepmeter. Though I’m always sorry to have that validated. Good to see that there’s been at least some consequences for him. I think every industry has a culture of women quietly warning each other about the problematic people in their workplace, simply because there’s such a tradition of not outing these people publicly. When victims (regardless of age or gender) speak up it often costs their jobs, destroys their careers, and makes them a target for the blind supporters of the abuser. It’s awful to hear how bad the UK police is. Perhaps not as bad as the US, but that’s hardly a compliment. Actually addressing and overturning institutionalised bad behaviour is massively difficult but so vital. I’d love to see mental health intervention in particular taken away from law enforcement. Just recently a lady died (Australia) during a welfare check. And our police really aren’t that bad, comparatively.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that this allegation has surfaced. For about a year now I've been hearing that Katherine Ryan and Sara Pascoe knew an open secret about a sexual assaulter in comedy but they couldn't say who because he would sue them. I am so relieved it's none of the comedians I enjoy! It's not a surprise it's Brand. He's told us as much in his act! But we have to figure out a way that wealthy assaulters cannot hide behind lawyers. There should be no "open secrets". Good guys like Nish shouldn't feel they can't name an abuser simply because he has the money to pay lawyers. I don't know what law we have to change to make that possible. No criminal should be able to evade justice just because they can pay lawyers. See: Trump not being in jail yet.

The culture of open secrets is deeply engrained in the entertainment industry. Everybody who knew Harvey Weinstein knew who he was, and Bill Cosby allegations had been swirling for years by the time an offhand comment in a stray cellphone video broke the dam. And that comment was just for the audience to Google, "Bill Cosby, sexual assault." A lot of this condoning "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" behavior isn't confined to the entertainment industry, but pervades the wider culture overall. People still rabidly defend Michael Jackson and tar any accusations as slanderous, and did the same for Jimmy Savile when his story broke. I highly recommend you go into the archives for the Wikipedia talk page for Jimmy Savile as an enlightening time capsule. You'll see people suggesting inclusion of allegations against him well before he died, and others completely dismissing the reporting from 2011 in exactly the same manner as you'd expect.

I would describe Brand's political perspective as exposing the undue influence of corporate interests on governments bodies : i. e. The FDA funding being largely funded by large pharmaceutical corps. Traditionally, this has always been a leftist perspective. He also advocates on behalf of the disenfranchised, such as the criminalisation of people with substance abuse issues and the social cleansing of the working class areas of inner cities - another traditional leftist position, you would have thought. Although, like the liberal left, there is support for marginalised communities such as the transgender community from the traditional left, there is an increasing level of resentment from working class people that they are becoming marginalised. Russel Brand is one of the few public voices that speaks to this community, without using the scapegoat tactics of the altright.

Back in South Africa my family got home-invaded: a gang of dudes with knives tied us up and robbed the place. When the police arrived to question us they made sure to have at least 1 cop of each of the 3 major racial groups (Black, White, and Mixed Race). These cops then took it in turns to ask whether the attackers were . The white guy asked if they were white. The black guy asked if they were black and the lady of more diverse heritage asked if they had, perhaps, been the same. It was an extremely clumsy, very person-intensive method of communicating to us that it really wasn't a race thing. They actually just needed to know what the guys looked like if they were ever going to have a chance of catching them.

Absolutely this conversation has to go way beyond RB and seeing this as simply an issue for media and celebrity or a man who had access due to his fame etc.There are many many women who could report very similar incidences to those described in the documentary,sadly they are not that rare.Most women have some bad expereince around consent at least once in their life and often more. This has to be discussed more broadly and how we confront general misogyny widespread thorughout society,the stuff I have seen online has been disturbing but not surprising as I think in many ways it is just as bad as in the 90's 00's and its only becayse of such things as Metoo that more women feel emboldened to cme forward and even recognise what is sexual assault or #ape. We need to talk about consent consent consent and I think schools are letting down young people by not doing more about relationships,sex and consent and communication and self esteem and dealing with online influences etc.

But we also must talk about the millions of women swallowing daily anti-baby-pills which destroy their libido. This causes massive problems to men, who then end up searching left and right woman who are still horny. I would suggest that the problem the "zoomer" generation or under 30's have is the pornification of culture. Porn has really severely messed with their minds because it's easily accessible for even quite young kids. All they have to do is type "pornhub" and there's oodles of hardcore porn for them to look at, and they think this is their starting point for sexual interaction! It's a massive problem but few are talking about it and far fewer have the nerve to even just _speak_ about trying to realistically control it.

I find it mad the standards that apply in some circles, but not in others. Take wrestling. Hear me out. Marty Scurll - One of the biggest indie stars, on the cusp of signing for one of the biggest promotions and making his national television debut, he slept with an intoxicated 16 year old fan. What happened? Immediately blacklisted from all promotions globally. Only a few tiny, desperate companies have booked him for a one-off appearances in places like Puerto Rico and Poland. His career is done. Likely permanently. But a major broadcasting personality or a politician, and the accountability and blowback is LESS?! Craziness.
@deb9115
@deb9115 Год назад
He didn’t sleep with a 16 year old he RAPED a 16 year old. An intoxicated person legally (not just morally) is incapable of consent so by definition he RAPED her. He should be in prison serving a lengthy sentence for his crime (and of course to, keep the public safe) where he wouldn’t be working at all … being black listed from a few gigs isn’t fitting punishment. If he’s a rapist he should be in jail, however if these opportunities have been taken away from him based on rumour and gossip that is entirely unfair! No one should be able to ruin a person career based on word AND no one who rapes should be free to walk the streets 😉

But, just as sharp as his wit has been, he, too, has the ability (like Coco) to then conduct a serious interview that's enlightening and informative (much like with former Superintendent Leroy Logan) while not necessarily squeezing the humor out entirely. @Herestothe80syou sure about that and the operative word is allegations. There is not just one allegation, there are many and all of these women cannot be lying. Brand saw this coming and that combined with Hollywood dropping him bc they had got so many complaints about his behaviour, is why he started a right wing podcast where he pushed a lot of whacky conspiracy theories. He is a major manipulator, he knew he could get a lot of suckers opps, I mean followers to support him. He wasn’t even an A lister or even funny or even good looking, he’s an unattractive man with a speech impediment, a b lister at best.

@Herestothe80s you sure about that? The operative word is allegations, there has been at least 4, at last count. Many sexual assaults are not reported bc these women become the targets. @kittybluett8887
@kittybluett8887 8 месяцев назад
@Herestothe80s to your first sentence yea, I do know that. Some of those women that he admitted to sleeping with have alleged it was not consensual and have actually said they were sexually assaulted. I believe them bc to come out and say that against a rich guy or celebrity is very hard bc the victims get vilified. I don’t know what the number is now but I know it’s too many to ignore. Many more sexual assaults go unreported bc of the drama women have to go through when they report a sexual assault. Some come out only after others have reported being assaulted by a predator, they now know they are not alone. No doubt everything will be investigated thoroughly. I think he knew this was coming, the reason why he turned to right wing podcasting to amass many gullible followers and of course Hollywood had turned against him bc of all the complaints they got about him. He’d got away with it for many years and used his admitted promiscuity as a cover. I have no problem with people’s sex lives so long as it’s all consensual.
@kittybluett8887
@kittybluett8887 8 месяцев назад
@Herestothe80s ok I didn’t need to know your sexual history, gross, too much information. There is no law against womanising but there is one against sexual assault. When a women comes out and accuses a perpetrator she is the one that is vilified so very few sexual assaults are reported bc they are ones that get held under the microscope. Like I said it’s going to be fully investigated and a court of law is not going to take any notice of what I think and apparently all of his supporters that he has managed to accrue by going right wing either. Btw in the Heard/Depp case I was team Depp. Having a mother with all the traits of narcissistic personality disorder, I can recognise it. Heard is a narcissist and Depp most likely has cpstd bc of his abusive mother who he forgave. Depp only had one accuser, Heard and his previous partner came out in support of Depp. Brand is a narcissist too, as is Trump an actual convicted sexual predator.

Russell was an appalling human being, especially during the peak of his fame. He behaved badly, taking everything that was offered, including drugs and sex. That wasn't a secret. He's acknowledged his past and apologised for it. That doesn't make him a criminal. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that his behaviours were typical of many young men who lacked anchors and reached that level of fame. I'm not American and wasn't a fan in the early days but recently he seems to have evolved into a decent family man. I've read his autobiographies and find it impossible to believe that he'd bother with rape given the number of women who threw themselves at him. It's questionable that his accusers haven't gone to the police yet they've talked to the media, under anonimity. In my view, this is an attempt to silence him.
