I've been blown away by the durability of Rubio Monocoat on all my household building projects, so this week we are trying it out on a Greenland Paddle. Will this hold up to the ravages of salt and sunlight better than Tung oil? I think it will, but only time will tell. Please share your experience if you decide to give Rubio a try.

Rubio Monocoat is awesome 39 years as a hardwood floor contractor with hardener it's actually 36 hours cure time and it's not recommended to use without hardener wihout hardener durability is greatly reduced. Great job by the way. 👍

Good info, thanks for this

Thanks for the info. In particular thanks for giving your confidence level and the evidence you are using to get that. This makes it much easier to decide than just a "use this' type of recommendation.

Monocot is a wonderful product, I’ve had great success coating my personal wood (canoe) paddles with Odies oil using their Super Duper oil and Their universal oil as a second coat, giving 2 weeks dry was hard to be patient but a finish that held up very well in my paddling

try the. TATRA coatings offrered in Japan (also I think in the. USA) it is a ceramic coating comes in various levels including water proofing and UV resistance feels almost like uncoated wood although that said i have tried it on a paddle yet. and Rubio is a great finish for floors and tables indoors

Hello Brian. Have you tried or considered Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil(gunstock oil)? I have used it on several personal projects for kitchen and bathroom wood finish work. Holds up well so far in moist areas and designed for gunstocks... outdoor use. Might be worth a try as well. Similar application, simple.

Hey Brian; Thanks so much for all of your terrific videos. Some people recommend wiping the wood down with mineral spirits right before applying the Monocoat. Any thoughts either way on that?

I really don’t, maybe that’s the cut any oil residue on the wood?

Yes, that’s the idea. But if you haven’t found it necessary, I won’t worry about it. Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

Brian, Thank you for your videos and I just built my first GP! I went ahead and bought the Bull's wax since that was the recommendation in your training video. Do you have an update on the Rubio? If so please let us know. Also interested in any maintenance, cleaning and durability with the Rubio. Lastly, I know Frank asked if you used the interior or exterior, do you have any further trail on the exterior version? Thanks again

I haven't used it enough to say. I like the interior so far, its a thicker product.

I like the new ideas, but tung oil is $21 per 32 ounces and that much will last a paddlers lifetime. My paddles were always shipped to me unfinished and I just do one coat an hour for eight hours, then one coat a day for a week, then one coat a week for a month, then one coat a month for a year, then a light sanding and one or two coats a year. I don't use any wax. If you have the paddler do the coating then it becomes very affordable. If the carver is doing the coating then it makes the paddle too expensive.

That pretty much covers it, to get any sort of real protection from Tung oil you've got to put endless coats on it and the paddles still get pretty beat up looking after awhile. No reason to change if it's working for you. I'm just always so pressed for time that a single application, (if it works) is pretty miraculous. Seems like a sample bottle is the perfect amount for a paddle, so 10 bucks is reasonable.

Thanks for that information, Frank, I've used Tung oil (pure, neat) on mine and after a few months they're coming into condition. My latest one, in Cedar as compared to Douglas Fir, is taking a bit longer to sort out but that's also because I've been a bit impatient to use it and now our Lockdown is over, I can't just leave it outside all day as I could back in June! That's a useful tip about supplying a paddle unfinished, I have two more blanks which I want to carve and offer for sale and hadn't thought of that, I could always give a customer a small bottle of Tung oil to start them off if they wanted that finish, or point them to Brian's video. Best wishes.

Hi Brian, Thank you for this and all your excellent videos. What's your current best recommendation for coating and protecting Greenland wood paddles?

Hey Ben, I actually have a pretty serious chronic illness so I can’t paddle very much so I’m gonna have to rely on feedback from my students on how the coating is working. So far it seems pretty solid. I can’t imagine that it won’t hold up because I scrub my countertops every day with soap and they are still as nice as the day I coated them a couple years ago.

@@capefalconkayak Sorry to hear that. Hopefully this coming season you'll be able to get out on the water! Glad to hear you have had some positive feed back. All the best! 👊

Интересно, очень интересно. А древесину какую используете? Сосна подойдёт? А если склееные лопасти делать? А какой вес получается? Эх, знать бы язык))

Hi Brian, is this the interior or exterior wood oil? Exterior would make sense, but it's kind of expensive, don't want to get the wrong stuff.
@capefalconkayak
@capefalconkayak 4 года назад
I'm just using the interior. Oil plus 2c. If you can wait a few weeks to paddle it's only 10 bucks for a sample bottle.

would it also be useful to coat the frame with?
@capefalconkayak
@capefalconkayak 4 года назад
It wouldn't work because it would be way too expensive and there would be no way to soak it into all the crevices like you can with a thinner oil

I'll stick with tung oil. Read the Rubio reviews on Amazon. Not everyone is enamored with it. $55 for 350ml?

I recommend you try Everdure, which is a very low viscosity epoxy that readily soaks into the wood. It cures within a day at normal room temperature and leaves a harder surface that is non-porous which is dent and split resistant. I find that once cured I can go back and finish it with a fine wet & dry and achieve a smoother finish than with untreated wood because the grain won't lift when dampened. www.international-yachtpaint.com/en/au/boat-paint-products/primers/everdure
