It's definitely Russ but Seattle. Geno is not Russ and never will be. He was a backup for a reason. He's pretty much a game manager for Seattle right now. If you make Geno have to play the entire game with his arm, he's not going to beat you. STOP IT! Russ is in his own head right now and it's hurting him BAD. Russell in Seattle had similar issues but they weren't nearly as bad. From my perspective: While in Seattle his strengths were - • Beautiful deep ball (Best in NFL) • Physical quickness inside / outside pocket • Great improv skills to make something out of nothing • Big in clutch moments • Infectious Positive Attitude While In Seattle his weaknesses: • Throws / Reads over the middle were below average at times • Once his speed declined he became more predictable • Holds on to the ball a tick longer than ideal • Offensive Line Inconsistency • At some point he became more focused on being "the guy" than the team winning no matter what • LOB Defense fell apart in 17'. Defense has been bad since 18' (At least with regards to yards given up) • Haven't found a viable replacement for Lynch since 15' - (Rawls hurt, Carson retired, Penny hurt) Russ in Denver: • Poor decision making at times • Deep ball accuracy is off (Could be the shoulder? Who knows) • Lack of chemistry with skill guys • Mobility is about the same as it was the last few years in SEA • Holds onto ball too long • Positive Attitude Looking at Seattle's offense now, Geno is playing out of his mind and I think its because he has a young talented line and he doesn't hold the ball nearly as long as Russ did. This trade was vital for both parties as well. Pete gets a reset with personel and can restock his team with quality draft capital and Russ gets a chance to flex his skills and show he can have a Mahomes / Brady type influence on a team. It's off to a rough start for Denver. The idea that he was gonna just pop over and make it work better than in Seattle was a gamble for sure. Russ is a talent and can be a top guy in the league but the way the AFC is its gonna be a lot more difficult. Russ wanted this to be perfect optically and I think the slogan stuff is a distraction as well. Denver also is dealing with injuries to key players and that def is a huge factor. Everything will work out the way it should. Russ got what he wanted and now ALL of the pressure and focus is on him and it's ultimately his duty to produce. Let's see how the remainder of the year goes...

I told one of my workers this yesterday. Russ never really had an o-line in Seattle but he had legs and great moves to escape the pressure - he simply does not have the legs to be able to escape a collapsing pocket and make things happen anymore. I said it from the rip - signing him for THAT much money is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen. Haynesworth-like.
@distortedsoul27
@distortedsoul27 Год назад
The opposite to not really having an o-line is that he held onto the ball way too long. He's been known for it throughout his career. Sure the o-lines he had in Seattle weren't great, but his actions to hold onto the ball a lot longer than most ever would, also have to make him accountable too. His lack of height also plays a factor to why he holds onto the ball a lot longer. He barely throws over the middle as a result of it.

I somewhat disagree he put alot and I mean alot of pressure on all of his offense lines bailing out of pocket early and not getting rid of ball quick between the hash marks. Imagine having to hold blocks as long as Hawks O line had to do. On top of that his three and outs are way to many.
@GlassActivist

Leading his receivers is why his last throw in SBXLIX ended in the result it did... Seems pretty simple why he's struggling now... Pete and Bevell(or Shotty or whoever) adapted their schemes to Russ and his strengths(along with their philosophy of run game, stingy RedZone D, control ball & t.o.p.; hit the big play off of play action) whereas Hackett seems to be trying to plug Russ into his offense... And Hackett's getting eaten up by the media even though he's mentioned how he sends in multiple plays into the huddle.. idk but add Russ pressing as the cherry on top and that's why their O looks terrible

@samruth240
@samruth240 Год назад
So a major problem with Russ, is that he is in a true west coast offense for the first time. Russ has never truely had to play with timing, make reads every down, and stay in a pocket. 1. He’s short, and it’s hard to see above his o-line. 2. Timing… 5 step, 7 step. This is the first time he’s truly had to do that. 3. In Seattle for most of his career he has a terrible line. So his first read is only what he had time for, before he had to make magic happen. So now, Russ has a bad habit of only looking at his first read before looking to escape. Russ could be great, but he needs to go back to basics and rebuild himself into a Drew Brees esc qb if he wants to succeed in a west coast system
@sidneyvandykeii3169
@sidneyvandykeii3169 Год назад
Seahawks wanted Russ to play with timing. He just couldn't do it on a regular basis. If you to watch the all 22s videos from Seattle you would see lots of WRs open on the break but, Russ rarely saw them himself. He would not of had to scramble so often if he would hit the open Wr on the quick routes or on the Hot reads.

At his age it shouldn't be surprising that Wilson isn't running so much anymore. An interesting comparison is Aaron Rodgers who has dramatically reduced his running attempts more than Wilson has. QB's in their mid 30's are normally less mobile which explains why so few mobile QB's are still around at that age unless they adapt their style. In Wilson's case the impact on his game is even more noticeable than Rodgers because of his size and the fact that he has never been as prolific in the pocket as Rodgers.

Those that run enough to throw, are the biggest threat, like Tua and Josh Allen. And Tua got caught 1 too many times. Lamar Jackson will be good for another year or 2 unless he gets hurt. He has wide open receivers because of his running threat, especially the tight end. I’ve thought Wilson has been done for a couple years now. Geno Smith is a very good QB and is a very good starter in the NFL, he just never had weapons! With that being said, Seattle drafted a LT as a top 10 pick in the draft this year. The first premium position chosen in the first round in over 10 years. So Geno has better pass protection, better offensive line, better RBs (Penny starter). Maybe Geno Smith is really that good! Hes 6’3 ran 4.56 at the combine. Has an accurate cannon arm. They are using Geno smith and instead of admitting that Geno Smith is just really good and never had any legit weapons with the jets, the narrative is that even a bad QB like Geno can look good in Seattle! Geno never got to play as full time starter with brandon marshall and eric decker! So we never got to see him in a legit situation! Then the NFL blackballed him from starting after the punch in the face!

That’s the problem with relying on your ability to run alot as a qb.. it’s great for the early part of your career, but when you’re nearing your mid 30’s and the speed slows, your career drops with it. That’s why brady and manning played as long as they did, because they both had the speed of a tortoise, they had to be that good in every other area. When their speed slowed it didn’t matter, they were never able to rely on it from the beginning.

PNW fan here that gets Seahawks games every week due to regional programming situation. Russ has been pretty bad for two years. He is severely undersized for the position and needs to escape the pocket to find throwing lanes. Problem is, he has lost a step and has lost a willingness to take hits as well. He has one and only one superior skill at this stage of his career - loading up to throw high trajectory moonshot bombs with pinpoint accuracy. Outside of that, he has fair to good elusiveness and knows how to take ten easy yards if a defense breaks contain. But he is absolutely NOT a top tier QB. He's also more than a bit of a weirdo, but that's another story.

@CyraXFactor

There’s no debate about Russ. In the past, he has stated it clearly that he doesn’t “want” to be a mobile QB anymore. He can be, he just doesn’t want to be. He has stated that he wants to be a pocket QB. He’s choosing to no longer play to his strengths and that eliminates him from being elite. That’s what’s wrong with him. If he wants to be a pocket QB, then he has to control the game and make changes at the line of scrimmage, make proper reads and not make errant throws, like P Manning, Rodgers and Brady. He’s trying to be something that he isn’t and he’s letting everyone down, including himself. Except for those one or two drives per game where he plays like his normal self and Denver scores some points.

The only thing I can think of to give Russell some what of a pass is if he was injured during the preseason games and couldn't play or was too risky he wasn't 100% so he didn't play. If that is not the case then I think there is no other excuse that makes sense and understandable to not at least go through the motions in 1 or 2 preseason games to get used to live game action with a whole new team of players around you, a brand new coaching staff that needs to understand how to best assist you to be the best you can be, and a brand new offensive scheme you are running for the first time. It's just unbelievable that with all these new things which a preseason game would of for sure helped yet nope Wilson is too wealthy and too selfish and egotistical to even care how he plays or how the team performs. There has to be a level of money in which football as a job just seems too hazardous to your health so just take your check for the next 3 or 4 years and stink it up so bad they pay you not to play.

As a Seahawks fan Russ has never been able to see well over the middle and early in his career his mobility helped compensate for that, as he has lost the mobility there is a giant part of the field he just doesn’t see in time. It doesn’t matter how good he is outside the numbers/ on deep balls if he can’t hit the lay ups over the middle.

Of course, but Russ has always had a problem with holding onto the ball a lot longer than he should. His height is a reason for it since he can barely see over an o-line, which results in him holding the ball, scrambling and trying to make plays. His outlets are outside the numbers, once you take them away you force him to throw over the middle, which he's barely ever done successfully because of what I mentioned above.

Only thing he desires and what I believe is the reason he left Seattle is the MVP award. Winning another super bowl is great, but his contract doesn’t help the broncos’ cap space for other key players down the line. That’s what hurt the Seahawks. Wilson was top priority that it limited the Seahawks from signing key offensive linemen, in addition other key players
