Samsung Messages has been a popular messaging app. For the past couple of years, it hasn't had many updates.
Google Messages is the default messages app, and Samsung even recommends Google Messages.

*I think you're right about this, after I updated my S21+ to One UI 6.1, Google messages was automatically set as my default messages app.*

I love Samsung Messages and the features they have. I believe they just need a few more updates, and the app would be fine. Google messaging, you can't customize your chats or messages. There is no trash folder. I love to see Samsung keep their messaging app.

I hope its only messages, google services and apps are shit. Samsung should focus on making their own apps and services or even operating system in the future.

I think it's too late in the game for samsung to make it's own OS at this point. If Samsung were to make their own operating system, they should've done it years ago.

Totally agree I use Samsung apps exclusively on my phone and Google Messages just feels out of place in One UI. Samsung Messages is clean and has useful features such as categorizing messages into tabs and adding a background in chats. The biggest problem with Samsung messages is that RCS is carrier dependent (mine does support it though) but hopefully more carriers will support it once the iPhone gets RCS in iOS 18.

I think google will implement some of Samsung messages best and most useful features into Google messages. It does make sense to only have one main default messaging app.

I had issues registering rcs in samsung messeges but was able to do it after a lot of fidgeting. Once it started working I didnt mess with it and it has been working as it should from last 1-1½ years. RCS worked well enough so I removed google messeges from the device. My device is s21 fe. However i tried doing the same on my mum's phone but no matter how much i tried rcs didn't work on the samsung messages app and i had to finally give in and install google messages. I miss certain features from google messages like replying to ceetain text and reacting to texts and that but all and all samsung messages is pretty good and minimal. More importantly i dont really like the ui of google. It feels over cluttered. Its a nightmare when you have 2 sims and want to switch from sim 1 to sim 2. It is just annoying

I think the RCS depends on your SIM company. Some support it and some don't. The problem is that Google Messages supports more now because the company has been working with many SIM companies. Samsung has fallen behind (possibly deliberately). They want Google Messages to be the default now.

@@mks-mobile my both the sims as well as my mum's are supported on rcs. The issue was from samsungs end but its all good now and working although not how i would have preferred still gets the job done. If it was upto me I'd wish samsung would push out an upgrade for the native messages app with imessage like features and rcs just to challenge google's monopoly because if any company can its samsung. I understand google and samsung have this weird symbiotic relationship which is a win for consumers at the end of the day but i would like to see a native samsung messages app on different platforms as a standalone app like whatsapp or telegram for example. Agreed its too much work at the backend with not much RoI but one can dream.

My s23 changed to google messages as a default and when I tried to change it back it warned me about how doing so would lose some features, so pretty clearly they're dropping samsung messages. Sadly. I much prefer just using samsung apps, and avoid google stuff where I can, but oh well, it is what it is.
