Yeah Rama and Krishna were probably historical figures. But Ramayana and Mahabharata were legends or stories written which do not completely deviate from reality. Which gives rise to the fact, that those books are written about the feats and experience of a very much real normal human being but laden with embellishments (like supernaturalism) and symbolism ( ten heads = ten qualities).

See you need to remember that God will not interrupt everywhere. Even lord Krishna allowed the Kurushetra war to happen. He could have interferes and stopped that and the Pandavas would have won without even fighting since Krishna was himself on their side. Then after many years some dude find similarities from a religious book and called the whole thing a stealing. Even if it was written nobody understood it before one scientist discovered it by himself. See i am not saying those book don’t contail any valuable discoveries. But going as far as saying that the sciestist just stole them is an insult to their years of hardworking.
