Is Scorn The Best Or The Worst Giger-Inspired Game?

Scorn is one of those games that's gained a ton of buzz over the years solely for the visuals. Obviously they nailed that aspect. But now that we can actually play it, does it hold up? Is it worth playing over all the other Giger-inspired games from the past? Let's investigate.

Saying Giger is "not safe for youtube" is like saying a bellyflop onto concrete from 10 stories up is "incompatible with continued good health"

I think I'm pretty much on the same page as you. I dig slow paced games that make you think and I really appreciate it when devs try to focus on mechanics that aren't just "shoot the bad guy". Then I played Scorn. I was disappointed in myself for getting bored so quickly and wishing for a more combat focused experience. Maybe if the puzzle elements were injected or hidden inside combat situations? Pasting a bunch of combination puzzles overtop of cool Gigery/Cronenbergy visuals reminded me of those old educational games I would play on the school library computer. Like, sure there's a caterpillar eating apples... but we all know I'm just answering a bunch of math questions.

Yeah, I'd really like to see them partner up with a more experienced studio. They definitely have potential, if they can get someone else to refine the gameplay next time around.

I would like to say there is kinda a sneak mechanic, almost all the enemies you encounter can be avoided, like when you first see them, back up if they haven’t seen you. Go to the last room and they will just slowly crawl away going to where they want. Most people hate the fighting but no one knows that it can be avoided easily. Search up aleckermit and his video “your playing scorn wrong” showcases this really well. Good video tho

I noticed that worked for some enemies, but others would just wait for you. Still, weird decision to make "standing around a while" the best solution to the combat.

I feel like dialogue and text would have changed the game a little more, but nonetheless, it really did need some kind of goal, and not just, "Oh, next section!"

Oh man this is so spot on with exactly how I feel and all the things I complained about almost to the T with this game. Also with a very similar thing happening. I crashed during the last boss then when I reloaded no matter what I was at 1 fps. No way I was playing through all that again. Just like I'll always say, visually this game is a masterpiece just like Silt, Papertura, and Stray. Buy those games actually felt good to play. Nothing about Scorn feels good to play and I could never recommend a game on visuals alone. (Which apparently is what 90% of positive reviews are it seems....) Seriously though....its haunting how exact your feelings and thoughts are to mine. This is my now go to video if anyone wants to know how I feel!

Couldn’t get past the very first egg puzzle even with a tutorial. Then I refunded the game

maybe if they nerfed the enemies or beefed up the guns an added an option to skip the puzzles it would be a better experience

I liked it but that’s because I went in wanting to do nothing but look around at my own pace and was willing to put up with bad everything else. Those spin puzzles were just the worst though.

I experienced the inverse of most people's disappointment with Scorn. I remember people thinking it was going to be a horror shooter and were disappointed when it was a MYST-like first person puzzle game but with a GARAGE Bad Dream Adventure look- but I played it way after release and knew what it was, I WANTED that first person horror puzzle experience. And that's what I got, and I really enjoyed it... for the first 2 hours. Then it turned into a terrible survival horror shooter with some of the most frustrating compat I've ever experienced in any game I've played. This could have been a fantastic Portal style puzzler that really leaned into the horror, but it’s only a decent puzzle game for the first 2/3rds and then becomes a godawful shooter in the last third. The game isn't good at either of it's gameplay styles.

scorn has inventory? I always switched weapons using 1, 2, 3 and never saw any inventory open animation like that 07:30

I think context matters a lot for the first Amnesia. It was very unique at the time, but a lot of games have copied it since. SOMA is one of my all-time faves though.

His work inspired parts of the game for sure. But in the context of the many Giger-related games, only some of them reference Beksiński. I decided to keep the topic centered around games Giger directly inspired, to not get too far off-track.

...i love dearly both Agony and Scorn :c And Myst, yeah. Granted, i also love hardcore puzzles even if they drive me insane, i am very much used to jank, suffering is my game and AESTHETICS with AWESOME VISUALS genuinely make both amazing art pieces for me.

Haha. I did play Agony at release. Heard it was reworked many times over, but I don't know how it ended up. I don't mind some tough puzzles now and then but I have to feel like I'm working towards something (other than the art here). Antichamber comes to mind for being chock full of weird puzzles but still keeping it fresh all the way through. Or something like INSIDE where you have some nice visuals but also an intriguing story throughout.

It's very weird. Almost all of it works counter to how you'd expect a puzzle game to behave. I dig how it constantly toys with your expectations but I definitely get how that can be frustrating.

The game had lots of random frame drops. Sometimes it was smooth, but it was pretty inconsistent.

I didn't think the movement speed was too bad, although lots of reviews focus on that. Mostly just the long animations that you see a hundred times over.

It's interesting, as far as Ive heard, Giger was derived from the German Geiger. The latter we pronounce how I did in the video (a la geiger counter, etc.) But I believe you. Swiss German is a very interesting dialect.

Shame you had a bad time with the game. I would say is definitely an acquired taste, its totally fair some people won't like the game (specially for the price and the lenght). Personally, I loved the experience. Like lots I watched the trailers and gameplay and that told me the combat was not going to be something one could rely on. At least for me it was pretty clear from the trailers the combat was going to be super slow. Believe ir or not I enjoyed more Scorn than Alien Isolation.

Yeah, I can definitely see where it stuck for people. I feel bad for the Myst fans who rarely get new games that are even vaguely similar to those adventure puzzlers back in the day. I'd love to see them work with a more established studio. There's definitely some potential in merging their excellent art skills with some more experienced game designers.

If you fought any of the enemies other than the last "boss" then you played the game wrong. You're not supposed to fight ANYTHING. Every single enemy in the game can be avoided or will just leave if you have a minute's patience.

The design is really at odds if you're not supposed to fight anything. Why give you multiple weapons and health/ammo stations every so often? I doubt they intended for players to just afk every enemy or skip combat altogether. It's a strange "feature" either way.
