Amnesia: The Bunker was an unexpected twist from a studio mostly known for non-combat horror games. This time around, they managed to pull off some very interesting game design tricks that you'd never expect to see in standard survival horror games. Let's take a look.

After playing rebirth I really lost my interest in the series, but this entry brought me back and felt like a true evolution for the series. Excited to see what the future holds!

Yeah, like I mentioned I think A Machine For Pigs and Rebirth were both big drop-off points for people. Hoping they bring some lessons learned from The Bunker in to their future stuff.

I honestly lost track of the studio after Soma, with it being my favorite of their games that I happily replay since it's a story that's fun to revisit. Seeing the amnesia series makes me nostalgic for that era of youtube, where sure some lets players were playing their reactions up, but it was great to watch them and occasionally get to see a genuine reaction in there as well. Amnesia took a few aged tropes for the time and managed to make them feel fresh again, and from the sounds of it they've done it again with the latest game. Also, thanks for bringing up the door problem, because I'm working on a game too that's going to end up with a lot of doors, and not every door can have a room. Or honestly they can, the program I want to work in will allow it, but it's a "do I really want to add in a metric ton of rooms that are in all likelihood not going to have a purpose?" kind of thing.

Yeah, it's a tough decision between depth and breadth in game design. Do I want to make a lot of content or really refine a small amount of content? Bethesda games usually go for former, while imsims tend towards the latter. No correct answers though.

@@EphiTV This is very true, plus can always add something to them later if they aren't essential. Doors can be very flexible.

There was a simplicity to the dark descent that I really enjoyed, it was the first horror game I personally engaged with that focused more on atmosphere and I loved it. I think that's why I also enjoyed machine for pigs; the atmosphere, voice acting and soundtrack was very appealing to me. The bunker is great and I was pleasantly surprised at just how much it felt like a natural progression of their game design values. I could see dark descent getting a remake with this sort of gameplay (I dont think it's necessary to do that, more that the bunker feels so similar to DD yet is a step up in most ways). Great video. Also keen to hear more about your game.

Definitely feels like a natural evolution from their past work. Even digging through old Penumbra footage had me noticing all sorts of little touches that showed up in The Bunker. Thanks! Ad Infernum is pretty far along in dev at this point. Hoping to have it out before the end of the year if all goes well.

Amnesia The Bunker truly left me praying that we see more horror games like this in the future. I really think they created the perfect combination of combat vs running and hiding

I simply love frictional games, SOMA is my favorite narrative of any story medium (books, games, series, movies, etc...) And a machine for pigs is also among my favorites, rebirth also scores pretty high and i'm quite fond of the others. Up till now i've never once not liked a game published by them. They just keep consistently delivering amazing titles, with great atmosphere, sound design, voice acting and narrative. I loved bunker the least because it was lighter on narrative but the gameplay was super tight. I actually had more fun than i was being scared lol. I already can't wait for their next title!!

Storytelling is definitely one of their strong points. Rare to see many horror games nowadays where the story isn't completely forgettable.

@@EphiTV yeah it has depth and respects the player's intelligence. It's well written and profound, making you think long after the credits rolled. I much prefer it over the super shallow jumpscare fests that are more popular nowadays

I don't like Amnesia, Soma and Alien: Isolation. But I did enjoyed Amnesia: The Bunker. Game of the year so far for me. I wish more horror games embraced non-linearity and deep gameplay.

It's pretty interesting to see how it's got a lot of parts of their previous games, but still feels so different (mainly due to the game design). Looking forward to whatever they do next.

I agree, amnesia had good story but annoying gameplay, and only got popular because of annoying youtubers soma was just ass and isolation was the same thing over and over

The funny thing is for the longest time I assumed there wouldn't be a monster in this game. As someone with a historical education, I know that WWI is horrific enough with no need for something threatening to eat you. The rats might have been everything we needed. We know that from every diary or record we have. Rats. Endless rats.
@EphiTV
@EphiTV 11 месяцев назад
There's definitely a lot of rats. But like all their games, it starts off grounded and slowly introduces more sci-fi concepts over time.
@dmaxwell910901
@dmaxwell910901 10 месяцев назад
As obviously horrific as WW1 was in real life (easily one of the very worst parts of history), I feel like that really wouldn't translate to a horror game on it's own. Regular human soldiers just ain't scary as a game enemy. The rats wouldn't be enough unless they were made to actively hunt the player. Even then, they'd end up being more annoying than scary.
@samwill7259
@samwill7259 10 месяцев назад
@@dmaxwell910901 I suppose something about the horror of a shell randomly landing right on your head now matter how deep your dig the bunker doesn't translate when it's not the players ACTUAL life on the line. Random, lethal violence is only scary when the stakes are...well, lethal.
@dmaxwell910901

@@samwill7259 Aye it'd probably just be annoying, though it'd be interesting if a game in the future finds a way to make it scary.

Amnesia: The Bunker I found to be one of the most obnoxious time attack horror games I have ever played. Once you run out of gas for the generators, you basically have bricked your save and cannot get enough flashlight replacements to make the flashlights a fair replacement for the generator. This is ironic because horror games typically let you take your time because they understand the concept of you actually getting scared, thus will understand if you want to take your own time meagerly. The guns in this game are quite a crutch as well that may as well be gold because the ammo is as easy to find as a mint condition 1943 copper wheat penny. Every inch I crawled made me want to alt+f4 for how much I hated this game. If you like dark souls level masochism, then maybe this game is for you? Me personally, I don't like to feel completely useless when there are nearly unkillable enemies in a game. I'm not going up against The Cthulhu Mythos so why should I feel helpless and powerless? I should have a weapon that is good for more than one magazine and a flashlight mechanic that is actually useful. I hate games that rely on crippling crutches instead of reasonably useful gameplay mechanics that make sense. All-in-all if you want a WWI Shooter with horror elements just go play Necrovision. I played Amnesia: The Bunker's demo before I played Necrovision and I can confirm that Necrovision, although a much different and lower reviewed game, at least didn't make me want to ALT+F4 my game.

If game devs are gonna cheap out and do cash grab "remasters/remake" Least they can do is make them good Res evil 4 was subpar at best just like res evil 3
@EphiTV
@EphiTV 11 месяцев назад
I disagree, RE4 is a great example of a successful remake. Rebuilt from the ground up, better mechanics, more content, improved graphics/audio/etc. - but still maintains the same core from the original. General consensus is that RE3 wasn't given enough dev time so they had to cut a lot of it, and it suffered for it. 2 and 4 are both prime examples of good remakes though.
@dmaxwell910901
@dmaxwell910901 10 месяцев назад
You're in the minority with that opinion. Besides, how is that relevant to Amnesia: The Bunker? It's neither a remake nor a remaster.
