You were not supposed to use your hand to swim underwater. It's wrong. You tried to execute a breast stroke. Your hands should either be attached to your legs or should be overlapping on one another as alladin's "GIN". Reason fins are enough to propel your body under water, you should not hold your breath it may injure your lungs so continous breathing is compulsory. Performing any stroke that you may have learned in the swimming pool is prohibited in scuba dive because it may lead to over exertion. You must relax, stay calm and enjoy the beautiful sight while just kicking the legs slowly by continously breathing through a regulator. When you tread on the surface that time you are supposed to perform free style, breast stroke, butterfly etc.

It totally depends how one's breathing pattern is underwater. If someone wants more time underwater, breathing at a slow pace is recommended. Quick consumption of oxygen would lead to less time
Never mislead with the topic that 'scuba diving is for the non-swimmers. Good swimming skills gives you confidence and comfort over the surface as well as underwater, especially diving in all circumstances like strong surface current, cold temperatures, night dives, to tackle emergencies like BCD failure. Scuba diving is demanding, it's take a lot to learn a many many skills rather than showboating after watching stupid movies like 'zindagi na milegi dobara'.
