Is Shellac Really the best Sealer? We take a look at 3 different products on the market to determine what the best sealer is for refinishing or sealing wood for painted surfaces. The results are quite surprising

adhesion with shellac is the number one reason I'd use it, along with the fact that it dries, it doesn't chemically cure. It's always live for more shellac, and it's even tolerant of a small amount of oil, etc. It'll stick to itself and the oil will come to the top, especially if it's rubbed on. I've done fresh wood or varnished wood with white water based primer only to have the tannins or something come through the top coat later. I don't know if the WB primer would've sealed those out if it had been allowed to cure for a week, but I didn't want to wait that long, either. With shellac, reactivity to water is low and I don't have the same problem. But it's definitely true that it's expensive and it goes on differently and often not in high color concentration. I think the reason you're counting solids and seeing less color density is because 20 or 25% of those solids are shellac resin.

Honestly shellac has become a legacy product. It does work but it’s not in the same league as vinyl sealer. Now we have a few waterbase such as the cic 1107 and Renner 602 products that are going to eventually replace vinyl sealer because they they are far superior to vinyl. The adhesion is better, chemicals, mar resistance solids and water resistants.
@BeAILsTaR13
@BeAILsTaR13 4 года назад
With the shellac you will see the bleed through with just that as a primer coat. You will not see the bleed through once the top coat is applied.

BeAILsTaR13 sometimes that is true others it’s not. It’s a good sealer and had it’s place but there are better products on the market.

I wonder what scratch test would show on each (stained area), testing stain blocking is good, but another major use of primer is improving bounding to substrate for top coat.
@ericreason6559
@ericreason6559 4 года назад
I have done that in other videos. The poly primer had the best adhesion since it’s a 2 part product.

I'd like to see a scratch test too! We used shellac on wood trim and then trim paint and they both came off. So I'm still leaning on always having to sand anything first. 🤷

The elephant in the room that no one mentions, is that most vinyl sealers are a spray only product. Where as BIN brushes and rolls very easily. Also a lot less toxic. All situational. Great information here all the same. Thanks.
@ericreason6559
@ericreason6559 2 года назад
That’s not true about the toxicity. Shellac is a 550 voc product and just as flammable as vinyl or any other solvent. The cic vinyls I have recommend are 275 so those are less toxic than vinyl. I don’t use any solvents anymore

I just tried Zinser synthetic primer v. the Zinser Shellac primer on two different furniture projects and there was no comparison. On two different pieces, the Shellac held like glue and the synthetic didn't. On my pieces, for the best bonding primer, Shellac is still hands-down the best.

@@ericreason6559 Question. I was comparing Zinser synthetic to Zinser Shellac. Is Zinser synthetic a vinyl? You're the pro. I'm just amateur painting furniture. That's how little I know. But on my pieces of furniture, the Shellac has a much stronger bond than the synthetic. So much so that that's all I buy now.
@eddieadams4770
@eddieadams4770 3 года назад
@@donbushek No, refinished furniture. The only question ever is how much I scuff sand them. and I will say this too. Priming changes the pice a bit of just chalk painting directly. there's something very earthy and attractive about chalk paint directly on top of old furniture. Coat the furniture with a primer and it's like painting over plastic. Doesn't give quite the same look. Bleedthrough v. slightly better look is always the question.

Please help. I applied shellac to sanded down cabinets. I applied 3 coats. I had them sit for 2 weeks before I was about to apply final coat of paint today. I sanded down between each coat of shellac. I looked at the cabinets today and there’s a ton of tannin bleed through. They look all pink. What should I do

Most likely they used an alcohol based dye and the shellac is just re-wetting the surface. Go with a vinyl sealer and it should clear it up.

I am not so sure that just testing a primer alone gives the truest info. I think you need to test the entire system as certain topcoats in combination with certain sealers produce varying results.
@ericreason6559
@ericreason6559 2 года назад
So essentially what you are saying is that it makes no difference what you build your house on and testing the foundation doesn’t give you an accurate account if the house is going to stand or not. Changing the top coats does not affect the properties of the primer but the primer will effect the topcoat.
