SNL has been on the air since the beginning of time; long before television was even invented. But... is the show good? Depending on who you ask, you'll get drastically different answers. Here's my opinion.
My favorite SNL sketches of the past few years:
"First Impression" ► • First Impression - SNL
"What's That Name?" ► • What's That Name - SNL
"Teacher Fell Down" ► • Teacher Fell Down - SNL
"House Hunters" ► • House Hunters - SNL
"A New Kyle" ► • A New Kyle - SNL
"The House with Chris Pine" ► • The House with Chris P...
"Undercover Office Potty" ► • Undercover Office Pott...
Also some cool behind the scenes vids:
Creating SNL: Control Room ► • Creating Saturday Nigh...
Creating SNL: Hair and Makeup ► • Creating Saturday Nigh...
Creating SNL: Photo Department ► • Creating Saturday Nigh...

Also it affects the actual writing of the show. We've had back to back Comedian hosts like Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Kristen Wiig, and Dave Chappelle. All of which were hilarious and the Comedians got to write some of their own sketches. Here just from watching "Gen Z Hospital" we all know who wrote half these sketches.

Pete Davidson is hilarious but his roles on SNL are usually awkward and unfunny. It is mainly because instead of making a sketch just for him to show of his comedic talent, they put him in a lot of sketches with unimportant roles just to attract younger audience.
@graceinasweater9169

I think one of his best sketches was the fairly recent Christmas skit they did parodying Eminem's "Stan". He was super good in that.
@bridgitcro
@bridgitcro 3 года назад
Pete could write his own sketches if he wanted to have a recurring character and be on the show more, that's what Seth Meyers did and he worked his way up to the top. but he doesn't have to and honestly im guessing that he really just doesn't care enough anymore. if he does actually try to get sketches on its probably bc they're not funny enough. I dont really follow him tho so idk

As a 20-year-old, I just recently started watching SNL, because I used to think it was all dumb. Now I realized you have to carefully choose which sketches you watch (depending on actors, sketch title, and video thumbnail lol). And having no nostalgic attachment to any era, I agree with Drew that the late 90s to around 2011 was the funniest era.

@@TheListenerCanon It's looking more and more like he's gonna take over once Lorne Michaels retires. I hope so because Kenan is so godamm versatile and understands the humor in all the sketches he's in, be it the traditional sketches to the weird and experimental ones. It gives me hope that if he were to become the head of the show, he'd be more open to different and more modern kinds of humor, something Lorne has never really been and something that drags the show down due to Lorne's giant influence on what sketches get shown.

I honestly really liked it. They knew what they were doing 100%, like with the Oogi Show and the Gen Z hospital which very much intended to be as cringe as possible. is that good writing? that's up for debate, it doesn't land for me, but I don't think it was bad. Chad on Mars, the Western sketch, and Elon Wario were absolute classics for me. and everything else aside, Elon does have Aspbergers, which is pretty apparent if you just watch his speech, mannerisms, etc during his monologue. It's not particularly easy to just get up in front of that many people and perform, and in that sense I think he did a great job.

I think recently, my least favorite sketches are the ones where they try to appeal to gen z. They keep on thinking that they can just use memes and attract our attention, rather than trying to figure out why we think those memes are funny. Sometimes it even feels like stolen jokes rather than an adaptation of a meme. They keep having Kyle playing gen z characters like baby yoda (not to mention the racist undertones to that). Kyle was great in “killed the bit” because he finally got to play a weird hippie.

Just curious, but how exactly is Baby Yoda a Gen Z character? He's on a show that's just a giant payoff to off movies from the 70s. Do you mean by becoming a meme, Baby Yoda has evolved into a Gen Z character. If Frank Sinatra becomes a meme, will he become Gen Z also?

I'm not sure about the whole racism thing, but as a zoomer myself the only snl sketches I really like are from, like, the 70s to the 90s. Landshark, the Church Lady, Matt Foley, Norm Macdonald's run on Weekend Update, all a little dated but still funny as hell, probably because those sketches weren't meant to pander to anyone. Gen z does, however, need to stop taking itself so seriously. SNL makes fun of young people, that's what they do. They've also made fun of milennials and gen xers and boomers and yet we weren't crying on Twitter when they did that.
@bananasstuff3344

Honestly, the reason I like to watch SNL is precisely to see, taking into account all the limitations (time, etc.), what they're gonna do each week. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not, but to me the appeal is the "trying" that's interesting in itself.

@@MiloKuroshiro Eh, that's a bit of an oversimplification. The message isn't what's important in comedy. It's not about agreeing. It's about being funny enough that even people who disagree can laugh along and say that they see the point. Its not about the audience agreeing with the message. It's about agreeing with what's funny about the message.
@TheJamesM
@TheJamesM 5 лет назад
I strongly disagree with this point. It's very true that comedy with an agenda can often go off the rails in service of that agenda, but comedy can also be used as a very effective way of communicating ideas, including opinions. I guess what's important is whether it's done skilfully - it's probably harder to do good comedy with an agenda, because the work is in service of two goals - and whether the agenda eclipses the humour. But the idea that something can't do both things - make people laugh, and make people agree - is kind of ridiculous. It's a balance that has to be struck, for sure, but generally creative works are striking all kinds of balances. It's part of the craft. Anyway, I've never seen a complete episode of SNL, but I'm very willing to believe the anti-Trump stuff is bad. Plenty of political humour is ham-fisted, lacking in insight, and kind of pointless. I just think it's a mistake to jump from that to "comedy can't want to do anything other than make you laugh". I think that's hugely limiting.

They’ve always been political. It’s part of their function. But these last few years, the problem isn’t politics, but an extremely unfunny approach to it. I think a lot of this stems from casting Alec Baldwin as Trump. Not only is Baldwin just not funny without a really solid, well doctored script, he doesn’t do a good Trump impression. It takes more than a wig and squinting your eyes. He didn’t have his cadence down, or many of what most would consider his most comical mannerisms. It just wasn’t a good impression. Not to mention, the fact that many of the jokes were very unoriginal. When 2020 rolled around, and they could finally start taking a swing at debates again, things improved drastically. But by that point we’d already had 4 whole years of the same “orange man bad” joke over and over and over and over again. Which is baffling because Trump was a horrible president. He should have been the easiest person on Earth for SNL to tear to absolute shreds. Yet they didn’t. I think a lot of this particular issue stems from the overwhelmingly liberal ethos behind SNL. Now when I say liberal, I don’t mean it in the “anything left of Mussolini” way most people in this country mean. I mean *liberals.* Liberals, by definition, are opposed to taking a hard stance on much of anything that really matters. They wouldn’t take a hard swing at Trump’s absurd, heinous, inhumane policies, because ultimately that wasn’t their problem with him. They could only make bad, shallow jokes like “haha he has a bad tan” because that’s as far as their spineless ideology will allow them to go. This applies to almost every figure that’s featured on the show during their mid-to-late 2010s run. They don’t mock bad policy, they attack personal traits. It’s the precise opposite of everything good political comedy should be. Also, the cast kinda sucks. Especially Peter what’s his face. They treat that guy like their crown jewel, and he’s really, really unfunny. Like, spectacularly unfunny. He’s the worst part of every sketch he’s in.

Wow i love everything you just said. I've been watching SNL for the first time on Hulu and I'm just now getting to the post-Trump era and you're exactly on the nose. The political sketches from the earlier seasons were definitely less liberal. As a leftist myself I was surprised with the way they criticized a lot of establishment politicians (and I really enjoyed it). They weren't scared to put politicians on blast for their bad policy and scandals. Trump is such an easy target for this exact same approach, but it does feel like they dumbed it down and avoided criticizing him on things that weren't completely surface level, like "lol he is so orange" and "he talk funny" and "his hands be so small!"

i personally like the current cast but i agree with the rest of this comment. snl’s best current events and politics-centered sketches are the ones where they’re not afraid to take hard stances on things, be controversial, or even dip their toes into edgy humor. nobody wants to see the same five spineless jokes repeated over and over again

i completely agree! people need to stop talking about ‘haha stupid man with fake tan’ and start talking about his numerous sexual assault/rape allegations and his harmful politics. i know trump isn’t really relevant anymore but i still wish people talked more about the things that really matter. i know they’re not trying to be political and make light jokes, but ‘orange man bad’ for the 800th time just isn’t funny in any world

At first I just walked into my dad's room and saw it playing and I was like "are these just the funniest snl sketches compilation" and he said it was a promo compilation. I think that since he's had so much experience for 18 years then also being on All That( Which is a show a old show on Nickelodeon which had sketches). There are also amazing actors like Kate Mckinnon, Beck Bennet, Alex Moffat, and a few more that are good but Kenan Thompson is the best actor on SNL.

"Comedy with an agenda is not comedy. Because it's not meant to make people laugh, it's meant to make people agree." This is how I feel about recent work I've seen from Dave Chappelle. It just feels like he's there to talk about whatever political stuff he wants to talk about and use comedy as a shield against critique. "It's just a joke" is the vibe to me.

My daughter talks about you all the time, and I really enjoy the clips she shows me, but you got me to subscribe the second you highlighted the mid to late 2000's as a golden era! I was in high school during the the Phil, Dana, Farley years and quoted them incessantly, but, often, nothing can beat miraculous Keenan, along with Kristen, Bill et al when they're on fire! When my teen was little, she watched with me all the time and ran around the house singing "I got guests, and a show, and I'm ready to gooooooo!" or "What's Up With That?" Thanks Drew!!
