Is Splatoon 3's Side Order DLC A ROGUELIKE? 

I personally loved how you begin as a full white-inked character, but adding color chips to the palette slowly adds up color to the character. That is a great way to show people that they're getting stronger.

If you didn’t notice, you can actually see that the fingertips and rings of agent 8 are coloured, which could mean more customisation options which seems really exciting

I think Side Order is taking a lot of inspiration from Portal. I think it makes sense honestly. I’m sure we’ll be getting tests like Octo Expansion and probably more interesting things too

Personally, I think it would make way more sense for this to be a roguelite, not a roguelike, as that's more in-line with Nintendo's philosophy of making their content accessible to everyone while still providing plenty of challenge for experienced gamers. Experienced players will reach the ending(s?) sooner while less skilled players still have the opportunity to get there eventually, after many upgrades over the course of lots of runs that make subsequent runs easier and easier.

I feel like, knowing Nintendo and how they are, I feel like they'd mix traditional story progression with Roguelike. Basically, the level/story functionality of Octo Expansion, but with the replayability of a Roguelike. It seems like the chips are akin to gear abilities, so maybe the game intends for you to follow a level-progression like OE, but it's possible to go back and replay those levels to earn more points. My idea kinda falls apart at the end, but who knows? I just hope they don't just completely phase out traditional story-progression.

I don’t know if anyone notices put out a point in the upgrades menu there’s a thing that says select tones I think we get to choose color palettes for our ink and “ tentacles”

My guess is Easy mode is offered to allow lesser-skilled players to get the lore and unlock the end, similar to how they had Marina hacking the system in Octo Expansion. Clearing the harder levels will get you brag gear (like the Golden Toothpick in Octo Ex and the bear ears in After Alterna)

The gameplay is pretty simple to Nier Automata plus the Damage Percents are a great addition! Either way as long as it's replayable in having fun with a great story I'm extremely up for it!

If you didn't know "Acht" just means 8 in German. The cloning theory is basically confirmed now with that and tye machines we saw

As a Hades and Splatoon fan, buying this dlc is going to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

the reason why Eight has more chips than floors might be because maybe you can buy chips with the level reward money.

One thing I just noticed, the description of the run speed up states that you are faster in “INKLING and octoling form”. Maybe agent 8 doesn’t have to be an octoling in this game? I don’t think that would make sense if they are indeed the same agent 8 from octo expansion, but maybe you don’t always have to play as agent 8. Perhaps you could also play as agent 4, for example, who might have different starter weapons

I’m leaning more towards Roguelite, as Nintendo has always tried to make their games somewhat accessible to everyone. Even in Octo Expansion, less skilled players could finish the main story with enough attempts while more skilled players could get a bigger challenge by completing all the tests and the Inner Agent 3 fight. Another reason is also because I just think it would fit more into Splatoon’s vibe than a straight roguelike, since this DLC will obviously have some kind of story going on and Splatoon is an easy to play hard to master game overall which I think fits more with a Roguelite formula than a Roguelike.

At the beginning, I was really excited with Roguelike elements on Side Order. But thinking better, I'm worried it might get old pretty quick if it goes down to just "kill as much you can and survive". One of the thing I like the most in Single player Splatoon it's the variety of how they use weapons for combat and puzzles and not just "kill your way until the end". Still think this influence of roguelike can be really good, but considering Splatoon is a shooter, wouldn't that make the replayability too repetitive? I don't know, I hope I'm wrong. Still super excited.

I'm pretty sure acht is actually not so weird snd out of nowhere as you'd think. there was something about the name in the splatoon wiki waaay before this trailer came out

The moment I saw the arenas that the floors seemingly consist of. I Immediately began thinking of the cybergrind from Ultrakill.

I am simultaneously exited for the dlc and scared that it will be bad. It looks like you get better chips if you select a harder floor, which isn't a bad idea, but at the same time I fear that the best option is to always choose the hardest one as you would get the best loot from it, making the later floors easy. I hope I'm wrong

at around 6:30 could be a boss every 5th floor that gives 2 or sum which would make some sense

I really hope this game has a good range of difficulty settings- rogue-likes can be pretty hard to balance, especially considering that some players will already be pretty experienced with this game. I really don’t want to get all hyped up for this DLC and then beat it in three runs because Nintendo designed it for someone who hasn’t touched the game since the base campaign.

We are getting closer to getting a straight up Splatoon RPG.

Man. I've been playing a LOT of Dead Cells recently. Seeing that SPLATOON of all things could be getting a Roguelike DLC has me absolutely hyped. Really, really hoping it's a roguelike!

I am VERY excited not just by side order itself, but also the prospect that perhaps, going forward, new splatoon story modes will be full splatoonified takes on different game genres. The games have so many characters, so much unique style and the level of world building there is lends itself very well to the series being broadened quite a bit more without pushing things too far Obviously that all depends on them keeping consistent high effort and support for the mainline games, and new projects, it would suck if we just ended up getting a bunch of splatoon tennis ultra smash and new super splatoon brothers U.

As someone whose only experience with roguelikes has been watching a confusing 5 minutes of Slay the Spire, this has been very informative and helpful! I was having trouble seeing what everyone else was able to infer from the trailer, but this video has made it so much more clear

I watched the trailer three times then was like “wait, IS IT A ROUGELIKE” and got so hyped.

Im SO hyped for Side Order!! I can’t wait for a Splatoon rogue-like! Also something i noticed is that when youre picking your ability and the stage, there are icons to the left that i assume show what kind of stage or game mode youll be playing? The middle icon looks just like the splatzones icon- which i dont think weve seen any gameplay of, the bottom one looks like a drone i think? We've seen 8 fly around with the drone, so maybe the gameplay is like that? And the top one is really abstract and weird, but the icon looks just like the black orb that spawns the skeleton fish at the beginning of the trailer! I think this mode is the one we've been seeing, with the hoards of fish similar to salmon run. We also see 8 shooting and popping big orbs kind of like a rainmaker shield, so maybe the end goal of this mode is to break the orb. Oh and one more thing real quick- At 2:35 i dont think the name, Acht is a localization thing, i think its just her real name, while dedf1sh is like a username or stage name like dedmau5. Great video! Im so happy to see more Side Order news!

I love roguelikes and I love Splatoon. This is gonna be amazing. To me, personally, it looks like a mix of Have a Nice Death and Risk of Rain 2, maybe with a tiny bit of ETG, but that's just my opinion. Needless to say I am VERY excited.

im excited to try this new form of gameplay, as ive never played a roguelike before. i will say, i have a feeling theres gonna be multiple pallets per character, or possible pallet size upgrades. given that in the trailer, eight's pallet is more than half filled and theyre only on floor 16, that would imply the game's rather short, but i doubt nintendo would allow that. according to the datamined info, the tower is split into thirds, so i have a suspicion theres gonna be one pallet for each character per third, OR you could switch to another character's pallet when you cross from one third into another. this would allow the dlc to be much longer. also your point about starting all over from the beginning if you fail seems like something nintendo wouldnt do. if i were to guess, nintendo will probably send you down a few floors, and with some of your chips taken away. given that splatoon is TECHNICALLY made for younger audiences, a punishment **that** harsh wouldnt sit well with some people

Curious to learn more about it. However, can't say I'm huge into roguelikes but I wasn't too huge into open world either and games like Skyrim, BotW and TotK changed my mind. Splatoon might be able to change mines as well.

I feel like Pikmin 4 could also really use a roguelike mode. it has all the elements to make it happen. Just an endless randomly generated cave where you get upgrades and more pikmin as you continue lol.

Something i have noticed tough is that it says floor 16F and ofcourse when you go down you go to you 15F But its something about the ”F” part.. mabye there are diffrent floors or mabye just What floor you are on? What i mean is is there like 13A or 8H

Maybe theres a boss every 4 levels, kind of like luigis mansion darkmoon online multiplayer where theres a boss every 5 levels

Now that nintendo produce a roguelike DLC, but we need other roguelike games from Nintendo

I think the DLC's roguelike aspect would be post game, because a roguelike for beginners can no doubt become frustrating for people who are inexperienced with it

I love rougelikes. I love Splatoon. If this is the case I will actually scream. If it is. Rouglike closer to the spelunky games with no perm unlocks besides knowledge that will be very cool. If it’s a rouglite similar to hades or slay the spire that would also be cool. I feel if it is a rouglike Nintendo would like to strike a balance between these genres and make a game like risk of rain and dead cells where items are unlocked and can spawn in runs but they are not permanent upgrades that always effect your character. Maybe the pallets are unlockable by doing specific tasks or maybe you unlock new chips to play with as you progress. Even if it’s not a rouglike I will still enjoy it.

It's probably more like a Rougelite as Side Order probably won't have permadeath, which is in the official definition of a rougelike game

I think it’d be super cool if they somehow incorporate a clone theme in the story. Considering that side order is a Rogue like, aswell as spoilers in Octo expansion, would be really cool if the game some how incorporates the replay ability aspect of rogue likes into the narrative
