overhyped? overhyped for whom, within which group? that is the question. the film has always been a niche taste, something discussed by horror fans and film students, not a staple of mainstream taste by any means. it's still that way. over the years it's popularity might have grown, but it's nowhere near as popular as people within certain communities tend to say it is. therefore it's not really overhyped in the sense that it's considered good or important by most people. it's still a cult classic film, it's not the godfather or shawshank redemption.

Frankly, I think calling any movie overrated is just false narrative. Calling a beloved movie overrated just means you personally don't like it. And that's fine. But that doesn't mean it's overrated. It just means you didn't like the film. I think the more honest thing to say is..."I didn't like this movie" or "I don't like this movie as much as others do". I don't think overrated really exists. A ton of people like certain movies for a reason. Anyway, I personally like Suspiria. I don't love it. It's not a favorite for me. I don't find it mind blowing like some do. It is a beautiful looking movie and I do enjoy it but I don't watch it very often. I really have to be in the mood for this one. It's a bit slow for me and I find the ending a little disappointing

"beloved" by whom and WHY is it "beloved" is the question... that's kinda my point...cant just say it is great or beloved and not explain why... the hype train on it and the way people lose their minds about it and ignore the massive problems with it,turns me off to the things I do like about it

@@AVAPopCulture I've seen and heard countless reviews from those who absolutely adore this film. I can't tell you why because I'm not them. I remember they mentioned the cool style and look of the film. I like it. I think it's a good movie but it's not a favorite for me personally. You have to understand that everyone has different tastes in movies. I personally find The Exorcist to be really boring but I know others love it. I don't think it's a bad movie. It's just not for me. There are films that I absolutely love that others hate or are indifferent to. That's fine. Suspiria was a film that needed to win me over with a second viewing, but I consider it to be one of the greatest horror films ever made. This is definitely a unique film, and I can see how it might not be for everyone, and my love for the film was not immediate. That said, I've introduced it to around 20 friends over the years, and all but two said they were glad they watched it with me. I love the atmospheric tension generated throughout the film. The sound effects early in the film intensify as we move closer to the climax, and I love the finale. Yes, the use of color is a major part of what makes this move special, and why so many people find the film interesting. The usage of color is intense throughout, whether it's the sheets in the gymnasium you point out, the flowers on the walls of the school or the lighting of the city at night. Additionally, his use of color is consistent through the peak of his filmography. Susperia is the best example of his use of vibrant color, so it's why the film is most frequently cited, but this is not his only film that uses vibrant color. Your video makes emphasis on the sheets in this film, but this isn't his only film where sheet are a major set piece, see Tenebre and Opera for two good examples. Now, I'll give you two major flaws in the films. Two of the props used in the film look straight off the shelves at Spirit Halloween, namely the bat and dog head puppet. That said, the scene with the dog out in the courtyard is very effective with the flying camera up until the close up of the puppet. And most scenes in the dormitory are very creepy, especially the stuff with the maggots, but I have no idea how they thought that bat was passible. Second, I understand the plot is thin, but then look at how many effective horror movies over the years that have thin plots but develop great tension throughout. I like your channel, and I've been watching a lot of your videos over the past week, but this is the first one I strongly disagree with. I understand how some people think Suspiria is overrated, but I think you're too dismissive of what works with this film.

@@AVAPopCulture you're very wrong about that. using diegetic/non-diegetic as a term to refer to sound within or outside what the characters can hear is a basic staple of film analysis, something any student of film or media theory comes across in their BA level classes at basically any university. most people are 18 when they learn it, and some if very interested in film, learn it way before. it's a beginner's term if you really wanna go there.

Suspira is a wonderful film but I can totally understand why people wouldn't like it, it is not for everyone. The story is plain weird and often makes little sense but the overall atmosphere, the colours, the music etc just makes it a pretty special film for me, though is it as good as some of his others, no ... I prefer Deep Red any day as well as Tenebre and others. Everyone is entitled to like or dislike films, it would be a dull world if everyone liked the same thing. I’ve avoided so many films over the years because of the hype. When something is overly hyped in a positive way, it actually has the opposite effect on me-I get turned off and it takes a long time for me to revisit it. So, I try my best not to buy into any hype. I’m not sure about Suspiria. I’ve never seen it, and although I’ve tried to dip my toes into Italian horror, it’s hard for me to get into. i first saw suspiria when i was about 11, i thought it was good but the hype around it was it was this crazy violent movie, so after i'd watched it i kinda had a 'that was it?' moment. keept watching as a halloween staple and theeen as a teen me and my pals would do various mind-altering substances and watch suspiria and thats kinda where the love for it set in lol. i'd eventually got a chance to catch it in theaters at an AFI theater, and even in their intro to screening it was a dude saying 'it's hard to say what this movie is, some people think its art, others think its complete trash: make up your mind on it.' but yeah it's a movie i've grown to absolutely love, likewise most of 70s-80s argento. buuut do i keep it as a normal horror movie rec to say a coworker? naaaah, only if they're a complete burnout and like weird shit.

I think you are right. The film is not aging, particularly well. One thing that always bugs me in movies is characters who have bad dialog and for whatever reason, makes outlandish choices (like jumping into the Razor wire) That usually falls under another kind of entertainment for me. Under the... so bad its good label. I'm not saying that this movie goes that far, but it's a bit of a disconnect for me in the type of movie it's trying to be. I think people who love a movie so much try to or think they know what the director was thinking while making a film and go a little delusional and make up things. It's a good movie, but it definitely has some problems. It's visually memorable, but much of that wouldn't fly today. You want a lot of color watch 1966 Adam West Batman. That will blow you right off your color wheel. 😂 love your content, man. To each their own, as you said. No stones are thrown here. It's just my take.

@andrewbrown3070 I honestly think a lot of the plot/writing issues come from the fact the script was intended for 12yr olds and then was not change when they went with adult actresses...some of the dialogue and character choices make more sense if they were nieve 12yr old girls

The original Suspiria is in my opinion a very good film, but I don't think that it is a masterpiece. On a 1 to 10, I would personally give it a 7. I love the way that the film looks, the sound track, and the way film makes you feel. The story is easy enough to follow. Dialog isn't the greatest. But for the time period that it was shot and budget, I think that it is a very good film.

I do really enjoy my annual viewing of "Suspiria" but I would have to agree that it's probably overhyped. I've always had a fondness for it, but for the way it looks and sounds--that 4-track mag stereo audio is wild. That said, the narrative is tissue thin, the mismatch between the dialog and age of the performers jarring, and the acting is not very good most of the time. I do like Alida Valli as Ms. Tanner, but Joan Bennett as Madame Blanc is really bad...which will also make some people angry. The Synapse 4K is probably the most beautiful disc, picture-wise, that I own and the style over substance is ok for my yearly viewing but I couldn't watch it frequently.

I loved this movie in my early 20s but now in my 40s, not as much. I appreciate its legacy in the horror genre and I am a fan of the cinematography and mood but Argento’s script and dialogue is just amateur hour. I also have a big problem with the way Argento edits this film and all of his films in general. The editing can be very choppy along with the sound editing. This results in a very disjointed presentation that can be annoying and disorienting. These elements I overlooked when I was younger because I was more taken away by the scary visuals and craziness happening. Now, with maturity and having watched many other films, these issues stand out like a sore thumb to me. Having said all of this, the film is still a classic of the genre, imho, because it is very unique and one of a kind. There hasn’t been a film quite like it before or since it was made. It’s very distinct in its style. And it has influenced a hell of a lot of people and filmmakers. But the reality is, yeah not as great as most say it is if you truly look at it objectively. And I believe you did a fantastic job here looking at the film in a genuine way. Cheers mate.

I'm a big giallo fan. italian horror fan. italian cinema fan, and big Suspiria fan. Suspiria was the film that got me into italian horror, like most people. it's a masterpiece and I 100% disagree with you. It's a perfect movie. I am never bored with Suspiria. Through any of the film. Now I will say....I do love this movie. I use to watch it all the time, but it's become less and less of a favorite giallo movie of mine and I think it's very overrated and that is Deep red. Deep red is a great movie. I love it..but it is far too overrated. It's not at all a "go to" giallo movie for me. I rather watch a ton of other giallo movies and I think Cat 0 nine tails is underrated. By the way...I've loved Suspiria and the giallo genre since the 2000's, which were my teen years. And I love giallo movies like Torso, Autopsy, Knife of ice, Case of the Scorpion's tail, etc. Dario Argento. Never liked any of his 90's movies. Those were terrible. His 2000's movies are also terrible. The last good decent film he made and this includes his recent movie Dark glasses was in my view Sleepless. That was Dario's last good movie. Sleepless in no where near as good as his original stuff, but for a last good movie? It's pretty damn good. I wish I could of said the same about Dark glasses. "These women are in their 20's. They could of walked away from this" Well....technically Suzy had an illness spell put on her and she was in a foreign country. And the term is "German expressionism" which i am a fan of by the way. I love Suspiria because of the plot of the movie; foreign exchange girl goes to academe for dancing; girl's boarding school. Witches, etc. Also, people including you always say "The film has no plot" and "Those Italian movies make no sense." and I call total BS on that. What is the PLOT of the movie of Suspiria? Well, it plays a bit of a giallo movie. it's a mystery first of all and it's about a girl who goes to a girls school where there are witches and the witches are killing people. In fact the professor basically tells you the entire plot of of the movie when he's talking to Suzy. The witches use magic to harm anyone who crosses them and Sara's friend was murdered by the witches and slowly begins to pull Suzy our main character into her investigation........that is the plot of the movie. So I 100% fundamentally disagree with "it has no plot" or what ever or "it makes no sense" ya, it's a surrealist nightmare in a giallo mystery plot. It makes PERFECT SENSE. By the way...this is far more of a plot then say Halloween....what is halloween about? A psychiatrist trying to catch his escaped mental patient on Halloween night and he's going around killing people. That you can understand and that's a plot...but "20 year old ballad student goes to ballad school and gets involved in this mystery involving witches using their powers to kill/harm people" you can't get? Just saying. Like, what do you mean by "no plot"??? Because when I watch Suspiria, i see typical 70's conspiracy/mystery plot about witches. it's no different then Halloween 3, Blue sunshine, Blow out, Video drome, Looker, Coma, etc. Films that I love. I love the "under dog who gets caught up in a mystery/conspiracy" plot. I love those types of movies. That is why I love giallo movies. So ya, to me the plot of the film is very easy and straight forward and obvious. Dario Argento even hands you the entire plot in dialog, and to me, it seems like Suzy would of been perfectly fine if she didn't talk to Sara who basically leads her into the mystery of the blue Iris, and if Suzy had only arrived earlier or later when the friend left and was soon murdered. If those two things didn't happen, then the Suzy would of probably never ever stumbled upon any of this and maybe it's because I am a giallo fan....but am I literally the only person who has noticed Suspiria is a mystery/conspiracy theory movie? Where you have an underdog character that slowly finds them selves going down a rabbit hole. Putting two and two together and keeps going further and further till they finally stare death in the face? And of course Suspiria would have these elements and be that type of film; Dario Argento's past movies were giallo movies. He knew what he was doing. Also...and maybe this plays into it. I watch a modern giallo. A giallo movie made in 2015, 2019, and they FAIL. They always FAIL. Why?! Because they always miss the ENTIRE F**KING POINT OF A GIALLO MOVIE; giallo movies are suppose to be MURDER MYSTERIES. Not "Look at me, I'm so artsy" and that does seem like what a lot of average people get from these movies. They just think giallo movies are about style and that's it. They are pure style over substance. They look at Dario Argento movies, Suspiria and they ONLY LIKE IT because of the style. They totally misunderstand the entire point of a giallo movie and why they were so popular and what type of fans they were appealing to. And because of that, because modern giallo only care about style I am not a fan of modern giallo movies at all and a few of them truly are devoid of any and all plot what so ever. Literally ZERO plot, it's all about "Doesn't this look beautiful?" and that isn't a giallo movie and that isn't Suspiria. So ya, this "it has no plot" is a criticism that has never ever made sense to me and if that is true, if Suspiria has "no plot" then Blow out has no plot. Video drome has no plot. Every giallo and mystery/conspiracy movie has no plot. Halloween 3 has no plot. The reason why I love Halloween 3 so much is BECAUSE it's a conspiracy/mystery movie. Because it's in the same vein as Suspiria and all my favorite giallo movies. I love the colors and overall look of the film. I love the soundtrack. I love the mood Dario creates. I love Suzy. I love the kills. I love the giallo'ese, mystery thriller aspect of the movie. My only issue with this film is the ending because I feel like the head witch could of at least fought back, or been more active before or after being stabbed in the neck. That is my only complaint about the film. And in terms of "Dario doesn't care about logic." and all of that...films are suppose to be escapism. Or as John Carpenter said "much more a surrealist" or as George Romero said "This is the way I want it to be and that's the world. Take from it what you will." it's like a stage play, with all the cut out backgrounds and stuff. it isn't suppose to be super realistic and be in the real world. I have far more of an issue with Lucio Fulci's movies in terms of plot and logic to be honest. And I am a big fan of House by the cemetary. That to me is his best movie, and a lot of people would say "House by the cemetary makes no sense and is incoherent" but I 100% fundamentally disagree. It makes perfect sense, just like The shining makes perfect sense. And in terms of Dario Argento fan as well as a giallo fan and italian horror fan...it does kind of erk me when I think about how big of a name Dario Argento is....because to me, as an Italian horror fan and giallo fan - THERE ARE FAR MORE MOVIES THEN DARIO ARGENTO MOVIES. I as a giallo fan am not obsessed or a massive fan of Dario Argento. He made some really really good movies. Stand out movies, but there are a ton of great awesome giallo movies that came out during the time period. There are other Italian horror movies that are really good, great that weren't directed by Dario Argento and that's how I feel about Suspiria and especially Deep red. "Suspiria isn't even a giallo movie and Deep red is not the entire giallo genre." So to me, when I hear someone talk about Dario Argento and "how amazing he is" and so forth...I am like "Your a Dario Argento fan. Your not a giallo or italian horror fan." I am not a Dario Argento fan because I am an Argento fan...I'm an Argento fan, because I love giallo movies and italian cinema and he made a lot of good movies within that area." and I was into Suspiria long before it became "over hyped", like most things I've enjoyed and ya, I also hate the term "elevated horror".

the problem with saying this: "Suzy had an illness spell put on her and she was in a foreign country." is she left and went and talked with people away from the school - she could leave any time... also, you are skipping over the "written for 12yr olds" part that was not changed... It is also difficult to defend him with "movies are supposed to be escapism" and then read in to and attribute all of thes over-analyzed, symbolic, and "elevated" things into the film - cant defend it both ways on that in my opinion....

Perfect movie???? you are serioulsy going to have to back that up... a film written for 12yr olds then given to 20 year olds without changing the script or dialouge and done by someone who stated they did not care about the plot -cannot be a "perfect movie" - no way
@Jaykilljoy-tt9tt

@@AVAPopCulture "talked with people away from the school - she could leave any time." Okay, true. That's fair. "then read in to and attribute all of these over-analyzed, symbolic, and "elevated" things into the film" When I say say escapism, I don't mean brainless. A film like They live, The ugly American, Dog day afternoon, and a whole host of "elevated films" ......the entire point of a movie is escapism; that includes movies with a message. That are "elevated". Also.....I hate movies that are nothing more then "message the movie" like for instance the barbie movie. That is a film that has ZERO PLOT what so ever. Zero characters what so ever. Zero anything what so ever. Barbie is "Mouth piece" the movie...you know what I wanted out of the Barbie movie? A MOVIE ABOUT BARBIE!!!! Any subtext, etc shouldn't be forced into your mouth. As another film nerd said "Your job is to entertain me. NOT lecture me. Entertain me." so you can have it both ways....unless your living in 2024. So ya, this is a total false dichotomy. Very similar to the "true crime/WW2 isn't entertainment" then why are you watching it?! And are you implying that being educated can't be entertaining? World history, American history, is INCREDIBLY entertaining. That's why I am a history buff. Educating my self is incredibly entertaining. As entertaining then a movie or a video game. I watch movies to be entertained. Pure and simple. And to put it a better way, in terms of Barbie "by putting the commentary in the main focus instead of the main characters [or actual plot]. Strangely it feels like people becoming dolls because they become mouth pieces for the writer and director." IS THAT ENTERTAINING?! No, it's not. That isn't escapism. That's exploiting barbie so you can spread your own ideas and messages....and that isn't what a movie is suppose to be. it's about ENTERTAINMENT first and foremost. Ugly American, They live, both are heavy with political commentary and so forth, but they stand on their own OUTSIDE OF THAT. They are incredibly entertaining movies. Barbie, I kept waiting for the plot to kick in and it was just "Talking point after talking point, commentary after commentary." and had NOTHING to do with any underlining narrative. The film was NOT about Barbie what so ever. It was about EXPLOITING Barbie and to me that isn't a movie. "This truly is a movie where the commentary is leading the characters. Not the characters leading the commentary" or the PLOT leading the characters. I was bored as hell watching Barbie. I hated it. And as for "Perfect film" I am talking in terms of the mystery aspect, and how entertaining the film is, at least for me and a lot of other fans, from start to finish. Take for instance Halloween....I would say "that is a perfect film" but I don't mean in terms of "technically" a perfect film; Michael is driving around in the most easily identifiable car in the world. It takes place in L.A in the summer instead of the fall and in Illinois. The entire store scene with the police checking it out and the alarm is still on and so forth...that scenes is totally incoherent and out of order. That scene should of never been in the movie, or shown earlier. Makes zero sense what so ever...but it's a "perfect film" because it does what is set out to do. An incredibly effective moody, well shot suspense slasher movie. The music is used very effectively. The pace is excellent. "done by someone who stated they did not care about the plot" but it clearly has a plot; a ballet dancer moves into a boarding school run by witches who kill people with witchcraft and she goes down the rabbit hole into fully discovering the witches and even preventing her own murder. The witches at the end get angry she is too nosy and again, if your gonna say Suspiria has no plot. Then neither does Blow out, every giallo movie in existence, Halloween 3, etc. What is Blow out about? A movie sound recorder who accidentally stumbles upon a plot to murder a politician. Just place sound recorder with ballet dancer and plot to murder a politician with witches and you got Suspiria. It's the same thing.

@@AVAPopCulture Should also point out, Dario says he doesn't care about acting in his movies as well. In fact Dario says he hates actors. At least he said that for a long time...and yet, his films aren't full of bad acting and believe me, I have seen BAD ACTING. Which I can forgive as long as it isn't consistently bad. As in, through out the entire film. Freddy vs Jason, I hate that film for many reasons but probably the #1 biggest reason why Freddy vs Jason is a terrible, awful film I can't stand to ever watch again in my life is the CRINGE inducing acting through out the entire film, by multiple actors. The worse offenders being Monica Keena and Jason Ritter. kelly Rowland is a better actor then those two and Rowland wasn't even an actor. She was one of their quotas for the movie. "We got our hip hop actor check" "We got our Jason Mewes wanna be check" "We got our Britney Murphy wanna be check." Terrible characters and acting. So I think it's unfair to say "Dario doesn't care about plot/acting" because....does it show up on screen or doesn't it? and Clearly the acting and plot does show on screen. There isn't terrible cringe acting and his films including Suspiria do have plots. Unlike some other films like Barbie which truly does not have a plot what so ever....what is the plot of Barbie? Barbie's owner is depressed and thinking about death and so Barbie goes into the real world......AND?! Ya, AND?! What is the plot? No, stuff just happens and it's all about commentary and nothing else and at the end of the movie Barbie just suddenly out of the blue decided "I want to feel like a real person. I am questioning my existence. I think I'll go back into the real world and get a job" .....where the hell did that come from in the movie?! Where was the build up to that? And I only know this because your TELLING ME this. Where was that SUBPLOT the entire movie?! And yet Barbie was a massive hit and rated 6.8 on IMDB. That is how bad Barbie is and Suspiria is not like that what so ever. Same with many modern giallo movies. Where it's all style and zero substance. Amer being a perfect example. Amer is a "giallo movie" That is the very definition of style over substance. it has almost zero dialog. Zero plot or story or characters. It's just "look at these artsy images" Totally ignoring everything I love about giallo movies. I hate Amer from 2009. In fact it's the bottom of the barrel when it comes to any giallo movie I've seen. I reward it no points and may god have mercy on Amer's soul.

also, i really dislike the example of the guy talking about diegetic/non-diegetic sound, who seems to be implying that using academic or technical terms to talk about films is somehow elitist or confusing, and should be avoided. why is it always the social sciences that get ridiculed for using their own specific terms? no one goes to a physicist and says -- "i don't understand what you're researching, so in order for me to do so, please bring down your set of tools to what i am familiar with so that both you and i can do the research." why should film theoreticians, critics, social scientists, philosophers, and others have to simplify their language and avoid well-established terms just because you've never heard of them? logically, the onus is on you as the reader to learn them, not for others to accommodate you.
