In this video, I analyse Thabo Mbeki's recent re-emergence at the centre of ANC politics. From appearances at NEC meetings to his recent speech before the Eastern Cape PEC, former president Thabo Mbeki has taken a more active role in ANC politics in recent months. What does this mean, and what are the implications of Mbeki's re-emergence?

I think we as black people are at a point in history where it's vital that the African continent prioritizes unity as one to take on the challenges of tomorrow. We keep talking about the South African economy, Nigerian economy etc., when we are going up against the American economy (21 trillion), China (14 trillion) etc. We are lightweights economically going up against heavyweights, and wondering why we are not winning.

Thanks, Sizwe for another balanced in-depth analysis. In my humble opinion, with all due respect to the old man, someone is ill advising the old man or he's miscalculating by seemingly choosing a faction, there was no need to make an example that was targeting SG of ANC in his former post, to return to ANC in this fashion is dicey it can be muddy there. His involvement in the ANC should be of a voice of reason rather than endorsing a certain faction over another, he must focus on illicit financial flows in the continent and contributing in the continent.

Thanks for this video, Dr Mpofu. I was fascinated when I saw his speech from the EC ANC PEC press briefing. When I listened to his speech, I said to myself there should be no point where you think someone is phased out because of a particular political incident. In Mbeki's case, it was his removal as president of the country. What's clear is that he still believes in the ANC project. But I like your question about the timing of his speech and why he couldn't say anything when things went wrong.

I enjoyed the analysis. Particularly the factor you mentioned that Mbeki is not actually coming into the picture as a support of a faction but rather as a critical voice that could be the tripartite voice. If this is the case, then it gives an opportunity to the leadership contestation in the next conference, because it’s not the Zuma/Ramaphosa slates, but rather a third candidate may emerge. Which can drive the actual renewal theory the ANC is so desperately seeking. Yet again, at the conclusion of your presentation, you ask us a serious question, whether do we have the energy to stomach the ANC renewal process. Impeccable analysis as always Dr. ✊🏾

I think he will deepen the cracks. The ANC and political commentary is undermining the notion of brought Church. This notion is a sign of an outstanding ideology that needs serious attention for any meaningful renewal inside and outside the ANC. The current dominant ideologies in the form of communism and capitalism are represented in the ANC at the same time. They may not be represented by individuals who are deliberate about it but this is at the centre of South African politics. The separation of positions is towards a rhizome posture for the ANC. I however think the ideas impressed by Mmusi is a better expression of this ideology. We need to assert community-driven ideals as impressed in blockchain as a movement in the rhizome thinking context. We need to revisit the core of how we organise ourselves as communities. It can not be a brought church, the pastors can not agree on any verse. Great observation Dr, I just think that we need an organisation of elders of the world similar to the one lead by FW De Klerk for our elders to coach younger leadership from. Not the recycling of leaders that keep quiet.

One of the interesting observation I have made about ANC and its people is this notion of self-renewal. But then again this is what they have known their entire life and they seem to can't imagine life outside ANC. I recall the interview Eusibius McKaiser had once with Kgalema Motlanthe about issues that have engulfed ANC. True to himself Eusibius was able to corner Motlanthe to admitting that ANC is corrupt to the core and self correcting is near impossible. Despite his admission he still said he will continue to vote ANC. The likes of Malema (I am an EFF member) said they will die in the ANC when they were facing their expulsion. My wish is that looses enough electoral support. That would be their wakeup. It does not even need a simple majority. Lose enough votes to form a coalition government. But then that's the function of how tired the electorate is of their wayward ways.
@sabakes
@sabakes 3 года назад
I don't think it's a re-emergence to ANC politics. He has always been vocal about issues in the ANC, even during Zuma's administration. Only difference now is that he is given airtime, because in South Africa, it seems to be a culture to get airtime if you have a common enemy.

thats a very important point to make. i would like to also add that it is nearly impossible to separate economics from politics. cause politics make the laws and the laws define your rights and obligations. you own a property because the political landscape has defined it that way. in some societies it is nearly impossible to own individually some factors of productions because of politics

The Duke of Idutywa who could not even build his mother a proper house. Zanele Mbeki is probably amongst the few black women in this country who knows the shoe size of Johan Rupert and Nicky Oppenheimers wives. Doing business with them. She is a multimillionaire rumored to be a billionaire by just sitting on trusts and being awarded dividends. The same Duke who got a two thirds majority but never even flirted with the idea of Free Education, land expropriation without compensation, Nationalization of all commanding heights of the economy. Full of grand Zimbabwe tobacco in his pipe, the Duke is back on poetry yet silent about neoliberal austerity. It's amazing what plagiarizing an I am An Afrikan speech can do for one's confidence.

The separation of ANC and State responsibilities is possibly not the issue. Because it is easier for the deployee to implement resolutions. It becomes a problem now because the very same deployee is ranked high within the organizational structures which makes it hard to call them into order. Therefore this brings disimpowerment to the branches and members of the organization. Thabo Mbeki didn't challenge the ANC but took his silence because he knows something we don't about the organization at the time,and even though this was foreseen 27 years ago,the organization was not in the hands of the masses,but it became a facade masqueraded as the peoples movement. Honestly ANC has a very in-depth history that can be truly respected and appreciated,but it also has skeletons. We as the people of "South Africa" are very loud with our discomfort but very under educated in understanding both historical and current intricacies of our nation. It is wise to know that we are just hitting the surface of our problems, because solutions come from knowing and not media shaped opinions that we regurgitate to each other.

Why? 1) He is the source of the faction in the ANC when he wanted 3rd term 2) Denial of HIV and Zimbabwe situation 3) Failure to transform education and economy and land into the hands of majority but maintained imperialists monopoly. NASFS was not expanded to the poor 4)) Last but not least he is still Chancellor If Unisa where someone else has to benefit insteady of him . As things stand we don’t reward skill, experience and professionalism in our choices of leadership. We choose bravado and entertainers as our leaders each time. Mbeki led for two terms. Using any leadership framework “including the ANC framework”, he is found wanting on a critical level which all from de Klerk are suffering from. The ability to produce other leaders. Even if he has time and is no longer having presidential tasks, he has not produced another leader of his calibre not to mention better. To this extent I believe when he was becoming quite then leaders that he would have produced would have been able to ascend to the task and our country would be on a different trajectory. The challenge is fixation on survivalist mindset. The mindset of lack, hording, and individualism. Personal greatness, influence, control, power, against community abundance and excellence. The mindset of our leaders is built on the values of teachings from the civilization of hundreds of years ago. We still read books like “The art of war” as good strategy for exclusionary pyramid approaches to how we organise ourselves as people. We promote elitism over commoners, that is why what President Mbeki is saying is holding so much wait against what the community is saying.

To me he was speaking to ANC members rather than to South Africa's populace and was appealing to them to accept and support the ANC renewal project. As if Hon Mbeki ever added value in our politics: 1 Education system was poor under his leadership:OBE 2. Economy was booming for the haves, but the gap between the poor and rich was ever expanding: Trickle down theory of Mbeki did not materialize. 3. Corruption: Mbeki did not question his then deputy President for using a military jet to shop in Dubai with her family and friends. 5. ARVs: Mbeki refused to help the affected South Africans. Yes he did well by becoming more vocal outside South Africa than inside. It does not matter what role he plays, the ANC is about to either die or evolve into another political antique in Africa. This party cannot self-correct.

Former President Thabo Mbeki is preaching one simple message, and that is " The chickens have come home to roost!!!!". This is of course referring to the Zuma administration, whereby he has on numerous occasions cautioned the ANC of the devastating impact the election of President Zuma will have on the party and the state. In a way, he is settling old Polokwane scores.

I would understand Mbeki as one who is speaking to an ANC audience about ANC priorities. Secondly, I would imagine that Mbeki has calculated that his generation is unable to prefer its own ideas about what the ANC should look like and has decided to take on the role of grandfather of the party. Time will tell if this is wise or if his fortunes and legacy were better protected with him remaining quiet.

Don't you think the President of the Country is not doing his/her job the party can recall him/her as it does now? Surely the Constitution and the Chapter 9 institutions together with the courts have done a sterling job in this regard. The problem we have really is to have a President of the Country who at the same time is the President of the Party. This has caused all this ruction. There has been no accountability at all. We were very lucky to have a very strong Public Protector who stood her ground at all costs. Thabo Mbeki is right in this regard. The party leader should not be the President of the Country. We do not need President ass licking followers but people who will fight corruption tooth and nail.

There is an element of truth in that. But I think he knows that Ramaphosa just like him does not wield majority support from the masses but mostly he has the support from the so-called educated blacks. Supporting Mbeki gives you a ticket to be seen as an educated person. He represents that while JZ represents the masses, mostly so-called uneducated. Mbeki;s voice would have drowned during JZ's reign.

There's a lot that seem to be a joke about the ANC but if there's one thing that is deeply serious and meaningful about the athe ANC is that, ANC is the movement of the people in very sense of the word, meaning, it belongs to all - those who want to use it for the better or worse either way it belongs to all of us those who abundant it and those that even claim to be loyal to it. If the ANC won't work Mzansi is going to suffer, so the least we can do is to get it to work ideally by holding it accountable to the fact that it belongs to all South Africans not individuals

We cant always blame ppl for our wrong votes, it was his right to keep his dignity. that time they wld have called him ill-disciplined. we should blame Malema, Vavi and blade etc for the suffering we have now. 2nd ANC can renew its self if the corrupt are taken out. the is no better party than the ANC, EFF will destroy SA and unemployment rate will be more than 80% if you check their policies.

There's bitterness in his political utterances. An ousted President of the still has a responsibility to campaign for the party irrespective of the dynamics. Zuma did partake in ANC election campaigns irrespective. But, what I find it ironic in ANC politics is lack of continuity. If a leaders is recalled, he talks bad about his former leader. That is suicidal in the politics of the ANC for the nation. It's an indication of a party scratching with not pragmatic program to address needs of the marginalised. On the issue of careerism in the party, he himself never addressed it during his term as president of the party and the country. But, now he is giving it to others to pursue. Why? Am not saying it shouldn't be pursued. He is back to address things he never did in this tenure.

I am interested to know if I ever pointed corruption in my comment. Anyway, let's talk corruption. Who has been corrupt in the ANC? Was corruption been the first matter that is characterised with Zuma? Has it never happened in Thabo Admin? Has it not happened under Mandela admin? I think you are dealing with corruption in narrow prism my friend. Corruption has been there from Mandela era till to date. Careerism has been there since time immemorial. It's still there as we speak. It's continuing to happen. It's just that, the term corruption is used loosely in SA. If you want to be popular among peers, you use the term......Everyone will take you as a leader with virtue. But, that is not the case. I am not defending Zuma. But, I am serious disagrees with people like Thambo who could not do anything about corruption to shout load now. Actually in EC where he was the past week, moreover the man who invited him Mabuyane......Has scandals of his own including a 2mil from Dept of Human Settlements. But, he doesn't address those things because, in AnC it's matter of changing a faction.....And you become redeemed. Zuma is just taking the fallacy of the entire AnC. Everything wrong in.govt is ascribed to him. And, that is what I disagree with...unless the AnC is a one.man show.

@@sikhumbuzolukashe4431 The corruption during the Zuma years was unprecedented in South Africa, even taking into consideration the Apartheid regime. It is one thing to say there was corruption under Mbeki, Mandela or any President for that matter, but that was a far cry compared to the Zuma administration, where corruption was done by the President himself. He created a shadow state, that was running the country into the ground behind the scenes. That should a crime punishable by death!
