It always amazes me that people will come to Thailand for the beautiful women , cheap food , cheap housing etc. But !! As soon as the term farang comes out people take such offense and call the people or the country " RACIST ". I have been there a few times and can honestly say I've only ever heard the term a couple of times . Big Deal !! I've heard far more terrible racist names used in many other countries , mostly by the same offended white people. I think the reason that people take such offense to the term " FARANG " is it's generally used to describe white people in Thailand. How dare someone use a derogatory term against a white person 😮 !!! Get Over It !!! I'm a white person and please tell me if I'm wrong ?? But haven't white people the world over , came up with racist derogatory terms for just about " ALL " non white people of every nationality ?? But We !!! Are going to draw a line in the sand and say using the term " FARANG " is far too offensive for anyone to say to us . Get Real and Get Over Yourselves. If Thailand is so Racist and its People are so Racist, your little mind and heart can't take it . There are flights leaving Thailand, every hour of every day , to take you anywhere eles in the world, where you won't feel so offended.

I have been going to Thailand for about 40 years and been married to a thai Lady for 34 years. When I first started going to Thailand I always thought I would want to retire there . But these days I am retired in Australia and are happy visiting 1 month a year. Part of what you said is why and that is I will always be Australian and thai people will always treat me like that and the way the government with their visa requirements treats you is like they don't want you there. I do love Thailand but sometime's the difficulty trying to get something done like visa's, buying land or buying a car makes me feel its just not worth living there. And if you have a car accident involving a thai person the police and all the witnesses will always side with the thai person.

Being called a farang doesn't really bother me but the dual pricing burns my ass. Could you imagine the chaos it would cause in ANY Western country if they charged natives one price and charged Asian visitors 4 times as much??!?!??!??!

The dual pricing is not racist either, its there I assume so that Thai's can enjoy doing activities in a country that has a lot of without Farangs causing price inflation. The average foreign tourist earns alot more that average Thai, so dual pricing ensures that Thai's providing services and Thais using these services benefit from this without inflating the prices for their own citizens and pricing them out. Nothing wrong with that... its their country.

Farang is not a Race, it’s a classification of a Foreigner. Regarding Dual Pricing, I can’t speak for the world, but Dual Pricing is normal in America. Examples - Disneyland offers lower prices for local residents vs Non-local residents; all state colleges and universities in America have In-state Tuition, and higher Tuition for everyone else. Note, they don’t have any chaos over this in America.

No, racist means to hate someone that is a different race from you. The word Farang is not racist or anything else, it is just a way Thais describe those of Western European decent. Cambodians call Europeans Barang. If want to live in a country that imports people from other countries and races and give them citizenship for the sake of gaining votes and twisting words to gain political leverage, then go back to your birth country. Thailand is better than that. There are plenty of Africans and Arabs you can hang with in your birth country, though don't get upset when HR departments hire them instead of you because of the color of their skin.

Odd and somewhat hostile comment. Western countries don’t “import Africans and Arabs”. Many countries do permit legal migration principally to fill employment gaps-an economic rather than political reason-and the US has done so for centuries (a prime example of a country composed of immigrants). Many countries in the West and Latin America also have sizeable African descended populations as a result of slavery-the exact opposite of a system requiring such people for votes. There is a migrant “crisis” in Europe now thanks to wars in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, plus economic issues exacerbated by climate change doesn’t alleviate the crisis particularly in N Africa and Sub Saharan Africa. But this is a humanitarian issue with no easy answer, not one about votes. Many Western countries have been strengthened by their cosmopolitan and outward looking models. Now the popularity of migration has waxed and waned depending on the time period and I’m not saying such a system is for every country but I personally love the diversity of the city I live in for the variety (esp the food I must admit). Even traditionally closed countries like Japan will need to review their insularity if they want to be able to support an ageing population. Perhaps less aggression and a more informed stance next time.
@gregbendermaexpatajarn80k38
@gregbendermaexpatajarn80k38 9 месяцев назад
@@cybersurf5 Those in Europe and the West are not migrants. Migrants are people that have jobs and work visas lined up in advance. Those people do not. They go from country to country looking for government handouts. And the Left does not care. In the US, for instance, those seeking asylum are automatically setup to vote for the Democrat party.

Racist? Because you can not be manager or are call farang? My friend, you are farang (foreigner) and if they let us (I'm foreign too) work and buy land and property, they will lose everything. Foreigner would buy everything. A single Russian, Arab tycoon could by a whole island, and every middle class would have an empty vacation house. The poor would never, ever catch up. By the way, I'm black, dark, in Bangkok, some of the look are not really nice but racism is a big world. You see, as soon as you become a minority, you talk like us, lol. I'm joking, and I hope I dont come aggressive. I'm from the French West-indies, my family been French for 400 years, but French people still see me as a foreigner. I love Thailand but if you feel like this as a white man, imagine how I feel as a black man. People thinking you're a dealer or a pimp because of the 20 idiots hanging at NaNa, sometimes it's make me sad, thinking that if I come back with my kids, they will get the same treatment. But it doesn't last long, you have to be thick skin when never, ever blended since you were born (You have a new subscriber).

Your comment needs upvoting. In a strange way, there's a benefit in a white person getting a glimpse of .1% of the experience minorities have to put up with every day. And I mean that for the white person's sake. At the end of the day, chances are (Though of course there are always exceptions) they will still have more privileges and agency than the majority of the locals. Think about going into any building and spending money there. Most outsiders won't need to think before they satisfy their impulse. The average working class Thai will really need to consider how much savings they will lose if they go into some of these buildings and spend money.

"Racist" to me is a strong word. It denotes a kind of hatred, contempt, or bigotry. Thais are a proud people and they have a degree of nationalistic preferences towards their own. Thais are alone in their language and culture and they often feel apart from the rest of the world. Even their brand of Buddhism is different from the Buddhism of other Asian countries. I think you mentioned that they are tolerant of others and hospitable to non-Thais. They are discerning and give preference to their own. That is why they are survivors and they resisted colonization. The element of racism I see in Thailand from my several trips there are towards members of their own - they seem to hold lighter skin complexions as more beautiful than those with a darker complexion. Just my opinion.

Hello mate just watched your latest and having lived with Thais over 2yrs in a area/village in Jomtien I can honestly say 100% yes Thai are racist . I beg with them to not to look/call me as a Farang just refer to me as Peter to no success. I feel like an animal in a zoo constantly looked at by workers or visitors to the onsite cafe or friends of the people who live there. What is most annoying is that nobody says hello to me just stares and wonder why I am not living in a posh condo. Now for me I am thinking long term and not going splash out in a high rise paying up to 4x as much to live in a box in the sky. Back to your question on the flip side well that arises when I am doing my every 2nd day run & swim to the beach next to the cafes & condos, the attitude towards me changes 100%. With the guards outside the condos smiling and wishing me good morning, cafe & venders smiling as I pass by and beach & motor taxi wish me good morning as they see me all the time Complete 360. This only because I am a Farang.. who has money ..Totally false.. I look back of what's happening in Europe with uncontrolled mass immigration were 2 mins before I watched your video I filled out a Survey from a british company, the question asked ,"Do you feel more racist against because you are white in today's Britain". The result was 76% of Brits feel more racist against because there white😮. Now having lived in Sweden and how that country with open arms welcome other cultures and now paying a high price. The only success for me was Denmark (lived 10yrs) who refused mass immigration and was heavily criticised by the EU and the courts or been racist. The Danes would say they are protected there heritage and culture . So back to Thailand so I agree with the Thais trying to protect it self from the flood of migrants, but you can educate your people to be not afraid of everyone and think it takes alot of guts to leave behind you own culture/friends and lifestyle to live with you. In 2yrs not one ask me if I could help them learn English and with the latest stats out you would like to think it would be helpful for one of the parents to get helping hand from natural English speaker for there child .. but no .. let's use the language as a barrier so you stay over there and me here. Such a shame .. 😢

Farang is not the racist word it's just the word that we called people from the west, too bad if you felt that way. This country called Thailand for a reason it's Thailand land for Thai and we do the right thing to reserve our land for our people. Some job are strictly reserve for Thai including taxi driver but many are open to foreigner as long as you have work permit. It's funny that you talk about taxi driver and McDonald job, go and see how many foreigner work in white collar job. Each nation has its own culture and that won't change. Some expats just complaining about everything and yet they still live here LOL.

Western Countries are chasing the money (and will sell out their Mama if needed), where Thailand places it’s citizens above money. Now, the fact that you pay at the supermarket and restaurants, and they give your change to your wife or a Thai person is HILARIOUSLY FUNNY!

Farang is not really an insult it’s just a word to call foreigner. It’s only raciest when the intention is to harm and insult others. Also as for jobs, I think the problem is that most foreigners can not speak Thai despite living in the country for a long time which is required to do jobs

I've thought about this recently, strangely enough. Rather than racism, I might call it and obsession with ethnicity, since the urge to easily categorise humans into groups is also often applied by themselves to themselves. I think for Westerners, it may have a lot to do with how WWII sits in our culture. For Westerners, it was a very easy to understand good vs bad story on the surface. Its effects endure in our political discourse even today where it's gotten so unsubtle. That's why reactionaries and those who always thought of themselves as left before still frame the outrage of being accused of discrimination - because it is a Westernly shared evidential thought that it is of course bad. I guess WWII might have a different association with South East Asia (Especially Axis Thailand lol). In fact, if you look at the 20th Century history of the region, the states have been bloodily formed though military suppression along ethnic or ideological lines. Liberals were likely associated with welfare which was associated with communism, so juntas and militias were quick to purge them from power. Likely, the lack of their balancing voice culturally remains today. Also, come on. Titling your video that and not mentioning the casual - and PC - reference to ผิวดำ (black skin) or else just the N word lol

When my Thai friend of 30 years refers to me in the third person as 'falang', it's usually to get me a Chang in a national park where it's prohibited 🙂, or indicate that he means me, if we're in a shop getting a SIM or something. It's utterly harmless as a word. I can assure you that if there was a word that was more respectful, he'd use it, because he knows I'm listening. Quite how some Westerners reconcile "diversity" with "everyone should act and think as we do" is beyond me.

Interesting video. I agree wholeheartedly that it’s sometimes preferential to be seen as an outsider-almost invisible to the day to day goings in society. Depending on your personality, it can be grand just to be an observer and to let interactions be initiated on your own terms. It’s generally how I feel travelling everywhere really, esp in Asian (India, Japan, SE Asia generally) countries that are not quite so multi-ethnic or cosmopolitan as in the West and even S America. Slight disagreement on the “racism is not always bad” angle though. I think any individual that doesn’t see you as a human being worthy of equal respect and dignity is not a person I wish to associate with. That’s not to say a society should embrace anyone that comes along with open arms-I understand the comfort and familiarity that comes with community and having particular values. I even get the concept of excluding foreigners from the job market. But I wouldn’t necessarily classify that as racism-it’s just part of what you mentioned before: a country or a society looking after its own first. Now its own might be of primarily the same ethnicity as in Thailand or be multi-ethnic as in many western countries, but it hinges on citizenship rather than race. And exclusion is not necessarily about race but about preserving a society. Its complex.

@@yujilee112 that’s my ignorance coming through. You are absolutely right to point out the differences that I as a Westerner will gloss over. Perhaps the West is more “multi racial AND multi ethnic”. I suppose it’s how you define these things-ethnic being more cultural/linguistic and racial being more “how genetic heritage makes someone look”- ie East African vs Arab? I don’t think a Thai person (by Thai I mean a citizen of the country as opposed to an ethnic group) would classify the various natives of Thailand or geographically adjacent peoples as different races surely? The Thai people do not see themselves as various “races” as opposed to different ethnic groups, and I would guess don’t see Cambodians, Laotians, Vietnamese etc as different “races” either but various “Asian” ethnic and national groups. Perhaps I’m wrong and the concept of race-at least to some-is far more precise than I thought. You have to get your definitions aligned before you start having these debates!

And with all this "Keeping benefits/key positions for Thais only" mentality the daily minimum wage is 370 baht chicken feed keeping the poor poorer but they seem to love it that way. Please enjoy that's the way I see it, yes its frustrating for foreigners, but if they did have foreign bank managers etc, its a more global economy and rates would increase no doubt and would not be attractive for us "Farang" to come there for an adventure. So, its a case of bite your tongue and cop it sweet knowing YOU are the winner overall in the end because your dollars are buying so much more over there and a much better lifestyle overall than back at home. I will keep my home and most of my assets at home until I am nearly ready to call it stumps, until then I will treat Thailand and countries like it as nothing more than a "fairytale playground", no commitment of my $'s and ready to "Take off" at short notice if things go pear shaped.

Did you know? The reason we use the word "Farang" as an umbrella term for westerners was because of the Crusade? When the Franks launched crusades into the Levant and made contact with the arab, they start calling the Franks الفرنج or Al-Faranj And when the Arab came to Siam they brought their knowledge with them, so you can imagine a conversation between Arab traders and Siamese merchants in 14th centaury be like: "...And these people with pale skin and gold hair, they are Al-Faranj" "Ah I see, people who looked like this are Ai Farang" ".......Close enough, anyway, wanna buy some coffee beans?" And that's why we call you guys "Farang"

@@alphaomegadaily Indeed,i have some connections about rentals in Tokyo,if you are ever interested.Yes,foreigners could buy land and i can feel you and myself now i am thinking i have been 5 times,but i felt more foreigner in Thailand than in Japan.However,Japanese language is quite a barrier to deal with things.I think still in Japan is harder with rentals,because in Thailand easier to rent as deposit is voided,since they need to get people.However,i do know someone who doesnt require deposit in Japan on rentals,normally they do in Japan,especially in Tokyo.Korea i think is not bad for rent and Taiwan a bit harder,but it is also not difficult.However,prices in Japan are enormous.Malaysia and Indonesia are cheaper.Anyways i think owning land in Japan is not a bad idea,especially in countryside.

Thailand is ok when you keep at the surface,nothing bad from it if you want to keep this way. The problem can start when you want to build strong relationship,strong friendship,strong bounds... A mix between thai love thai and their practice of buddhism of non permanence where they acknowledge everything flow and goes. No attachment..no suffering..typically Thai mindset. Refreshing if you need a peace of mind but a pain in the ass when you try to construct something because life imply suffering.

Yes, I hate to generalise but you can't ignore the last century of history in the region. It's living memory for some people there. There were a lot of bloody purges based on broad categorical ethnic or idealistic lines. More often than not, hard-line right leaders or juntas pushed out any leaders or groups on the liberal end of the spectrum. The cultures, what is permitted, encouraged or defined as 'correct' may follow from there.

Let me dig on this...the non talkative behavior,in this case with farang,is true. My partner who is filipina we went there and i experienced that. First they thought she was Thai...can't speak Thai...still they will continue to ignore the farang and speak in English with one of their "racial"sister. I was even surprised how she got nice chat,asking her where's she's from,you look same as Thai.... At this moment,something i was feeling from the back was confirmed. You can see some videos of Filipinos Thais couples and they are what i consider integrated as almost"Thais". A farang will never get this status. Just a remark..it is what is.

I holiday in Thailand often, and find the Thai people i deal with almost always polite, the Farang term does 'grate' me a little bit, especially when your refered as a Farang by a child talking to their parents 🤔 I think xenophobic fits better than racist, and any examples I've had, which are few and far between have been 100% from Thai men. They seem, in my opinion almost on a quest to get one over you, like motorbike taxi asking 350 bht for a less than 1 km ride, it gets really boring after a while, fortunately most hotel and restaurant staff are women who have always been lovely, i even book lady taxi drivers for the same reason, but as said i dont live there so its not a big deal for me

As a Thai-American, I am fortunate to have a connection with the Thai community when I visit Thailand, and I can assure any FARANG aka European or non-Thais, that Thai people do not have any hatred or negative perceptions of foreigners. I have never heard any of my relatives and Thai friends speak badly about foreigners in their country. Do I agree with the dual pricing for foreigners? I do not know but it is what it is! What gets me is that tourists from wealthier countries such as the USA, Australia, UK, or Canada would gleefully tell me how they are paying $2 USD for a dish they would be paying $10 USD in their home country but then, they're upset about paying 35-70 Baht ($1 - $2) more to get into some tourist sites.

@@alphaomegadaily No, you missed the point. Being related to ethnicity by itself does not make the word racist. It is as much racist as "Asian" or "Caucasian".
