I like to say I went vegan because of undercover footage of pig farms at the start of the pandemic, but the first seeds that were planted for me were by your videos years back. Disruptive protests aren't always aimed at the public, but the relevant decision makers. In the UK, oil companies have indulged in culture washing by sponsoring museums etc, and some of these protests are aimed at encouraging the institutions to cut their ties with polluting companies. To bring about change, often a mix of tactics is required.
@Dan_Tasty
@Dan_Tasty 19 дней назад
The only issue with that is that the decision-makers can really only be influenced if the protest gains public support because the threat is that the activists will negatively effect the favourability of the company and consequentially the profits. I think it's like Swayze says, the action needs a solid target and motivation that vegans and non-vegans alike will disagree with, and hopefully the needle is shifted. I think the activism surrounding Pignorant and the RSPCA chicken investigation are really good examples that are having tangible results

Tash has a lot of passion for the animals. I think we need to stop criticising different strategies and stand united- I will often leave positive comments of support on her YT clips in the event that some of her haters and trolls might start to see the truth- there are a lot of eyeballs there. Also, the many young people who start watching her clips to 'hate' on her, may begin to get other vegan content, maybe a bit of Joey Carbstrong or Earthling Ed, or maybe even slaughterhouse or factory farm footage. The seeds may get planted via a variety of exposure. Tash attracts a huge amount of attention and some of her protests give her mainstream, prime-time attention here in Australia- even on television and in newspapers. Once she has that attention, she is an eloquent and calm speaker for the animals. People respond differently to different forms of information and different methods of delivery. I don't agree with everything that Tash does but I support her efforts, passion and bravery. The suffragettes and civil rights activists certainly used disruptive tactics to help their cause.

The point of activism isn't always to get people to change their minds instantly. It's not only about awareness. Disruptive activists make non-confrontational activists feel much more legitimate, and gives them a place in the table as the "common sense" activist. Without disruptive activist, moderate activists are felt like fringe, so it normalises them. It's just about pushing the boundaries. It's akin to the anchoring bias in marketing, or even part of it (for example when stores put first an outrageously expensive product, that is not meant to be sold, but is rather meant to make the next -still expensive- products as acceptable. TBH, it's also similar to what happens between vegan activists and welfare-reducetarian activists. I'm positive that if you do a similar study, simply asking to reduce your meat consumption or the way it's sourced (for ethical or ecological reasons) is far more effective in the short-term at reducing animal exploitation than advocating for a full vegan diet. But it's all part of an ecosystem, and I'm sure it'd be far less effective without an environment where vegan activism is more and more ubiquitous. It shifts the narrative. Sadly, far-right activists and fascists know very well how this works, and they keep winning some battles because of it. It's time to stop policing ourselves that much (or maybe, ironically, it's the policing ourselves that gives us a veneer of mainstream legitimacy, which is, in anf of itself, the main benefit of confrontational activism?). For me it's just a very liberal vs marxist way of looking at things: do we evaluate just our individual action and ist consequences in the vacuum, or do we look at it as part of a broader inter-connected system? Depending on your angle, you'll find different answers. Either way, I still think both activisms are extremelly important, and I think one without the other would'nt really work.

Yeah, I think most vegans are too complicit. We act like this is a lifestyle choice and not like billions of animals a year are being tortured before their murders when people are actually healthier on plant-based diets and this doesn't need to happen at all. I've been struggling with guilt recently from the cognitive dissonance that I have, knowing an entire massive genocide, bigger than the entire holocaust is happening to innocent animals literally every single day and I do nothing but eat veggies and ignore it. Anyone who thinks personal diet changes are enough are deeply failing the victims of the world's biggest ever, moral atrocity. Animals deserve better from us all, they need us to be loud. In a just world, we'd be going to jail for busting into slaughterhouses and shutting down their operations. Just like black activists went to jail loudly and unapologetically demanding their liberation. White people weren't going to give them freedom peacefully when exploitation was in their benefit, and neither will the meat complex give animals freedom peacefully. I am saddened by the naivety of any vegan who thinks personally being plant-based is doing their part.

The finding is that any protests, _even non-disruptive (peaceful) protests,_ have no affect or can _reduce_ support for animal welfare causes, _even amongst people who already avoid meat,_ i.e. the group of people who are more likely to already sympathize with farmed animals? That's quite demoralizing in addition to going against what I'd say is the common understanding that peaceful protests can be effective. Don't we all think peaceful protests helped women's and civil rights movements succeed? They didn't have social media. One of the problems with this type of confrontational activism is that it sparks those rebellious tendencies as a form of backlash causing more harm than good. To go vegan these people need to grow a soul and that's not going to happen by yelling at them and dancing around in menstrual blood (grody). The type of selfishness we're dealing with is deeply ingrained and will likely have to be something they confront by necessity. Yelling at them will never work, but a doctor pointing out why they have heart disease, diabetes, rectal cancer, obesity, lactose intolerance and then carefully inserting the vegan diet to heal them can start the wheels turning. Nothing will make them care about sentient life, the world, their children's future as it would have to make them accept accountability and responsibility, which, once accepted is hard to turn back around from. Activists like Rob Banks are more effective by quietly and carefully placing shock ads in places where people will casually be confronted by the harsh truths they readily ignore. They are already in a calm state, not sitting down to eat, and are consistently having the messages chip away at them as the go through their normal travels. Animal sentience is never on their minds to begin with. They can't look at an ant they stepped on and see the complex torment in it's reactions to equate with sentience. How do you make someone grow a soul?

I find that the most impactful activism is just to be vegan, long term. I love when people ask me "So you don't eat meat?" And I tell them, yup, haven't had it for over a decade! And they look at me with disbelief. I used to be one of them. Those who planted a seed for me where those who had been vegetarian/vegan for a long time, like +10 years or since they were kids. My brain unconsciously registered that that it's doable and nothing bad is going to happen. (Because I at the time thought one had to have meat in order to survive lol). Now, I personally didn't like eating or cooking meat, so for me uncovering that this diet was doable long-term felt liberating. But I still can't see how anyone can witness a person being without meat for over a decade and not feeling some sort of shame or doubt over their choices? It should be the seed that makes them take small steps towards reducing their meat intake. If they have any morals at all.

The best way to try to get someone to consider a change in lifestyle or viewpoint is about meeting them where they're at, learning about what factors go into their current position and getting them to examine and reflect on themselves and consider it against yours. The moment you start aggressively confronting them, all youre doing is triggering a defebsive gut reaction from them which completely cuts off rational discussion and any chance of dialogue. It's impossible to study, but ultimately i don't think we can stop people doing extreme protesting without draconian anti-protest laws, which do more harm than good, so there isn't much fruitful conversation to be had. Promoting being kind to eachother is the best form of activism in my opinion but maybe I'm wrong, maybe slavery and suffrage and workers rights really wouldn't have happened without disruptive protesting, who knows

I got into veganism through a cool person in highschool when they mentioned they dont eat meat and were a vegetarian. Me being too shy I didn't ask her what she ate but started researching and doing some food for myself. Through researching on vegetarism, I landed on twitch to a streamer who was talking about pressing tofu and doing other vegan recipes (at that time I was vegetarian). And then the streamer raided to another streamer who was talking about animal issues, showing videos that were exposing animal farms and animal mistreatment in them, and that was the breaking point where I became fully vegan. Without that planted seed I wouldn't be vegan. One thing that helped a lot is the covid period when I could test foods and recipes as I could work from the kitchen. If i kept that same workflow as I did before covid, I wouldn't have enough time to experiment anything. My daily schedule was basically Sleep > drive > work > lunch > work > drive > shop > quick heat-up meal as dinner > sleep. So from my case Influence, curiosity and time were the most crucial as activism

Social media activism definitely did it for me. And it definitely happenend in stages. By that I am not talking about the eating part. I am an avid Doctor Mike viewer and you reacted to him once. And voila. You ended up in my feed. I watched the video and kinda moved on without giving it much thought. At some point I was trying to eat healthier. I looked at all kinds of diets. And I did the, oh lets try xyz diet for 30 days thing. After a while I ended up with 30 days vegan. With me researching vegan dishes, you ended up in my feed again. I went down the rabbithole and watched almost all your videos in a week. Your reaction videos led me to vegan content. But you provided me with a filter, I kinda knew "watch out bad example" when I ran into some of the agressive activists on youtube. So stuff that would have annoyed me or turned me off of the idea was basically invalid. This way I kept exploring and someday, it just 'clicked'. The cognitive disonance ended. I cried myself to sleep that night. I remember that after that I could barely control my anger when someone wouldn't "get it." But I also remembered that it was the calm activism that got through to me and now I do my best to follow that example.

Honestly i took that comment about secretly recording abuse even worse then the possibilities you gave. I took it like they are saying it is some kind of violation to record people being abusive. Like somehow, people are bad for not following the unwritten rule of just turning a blind i Eye to this sort of thing. Kinda like how a lot of pro equestrians were probably mad that a few people got banned from the Olympics because horse abuse footage got leaked. I totally see a lot of people being mad the footage was leaked because they dont actually have a problem with the behavior, they just feel bad a fellow athlete was caught and can't compete now.

In a recent court case, the court was told that Tash Peterson earned more than $400,000 in the 2021-2022 financial year, but declared just $70,000 in business earnings to Australian Tax Office. When her bank statements were mentioned in court, she could only point to one $100 donation to an animal charity. Payments on her bank statement included receipts for buying a new car, a holiday in Italy, transfer of money to her boyfriend, & a 'jet ski loan' to her father and brother. What Tash did was realize that PETA makes a fortune out of exploiting young women like her, who were willing to show their T&A & create some noise, & decided to just keep the money for herself instead. After the James Aspey con, is this not a wake up call to the vegan movement that we need more transparency & to how this new generation of grifters exploiting second hand ideas & the movement acountable? The court was told, albeit not in these terms, that she used to her activism to attract people to sign up for her jerk off material.

As with any argument you are trying to make to a crowd that thinks or believes different than you, yelling/violence/confrontation/extreme demonstrations are not the way to try to convince someone to see your side, or even the way to share information, because they think you're crazy and want to avoid you. I've been vegan for 17 years, and what got me thinking about eliminating animal products from my diet and my life was having meaningful, understanding conversations with another vegan. It opened my eyes and slowly, I stepped out on my own and started watching videos and once I saw what my vegan friend said was true, there was no looking back! I have always felt that screaming and confrontation only perpetuates the stereotype that vegans are crazy extremists and just closes off people's mind to your point. It seems the studies confirm this, but really it's a no-brainer. PETA did this stuff for years and people think they are crazy and they've become the brunt of so many jokes that no one who isn't vegan even listens to them anymore. Compassion is always the answer.

As a person who went to political protests I fully understand why some people do that form of activism. Its a rush of adrenaline, you are screaming about whats right, you put all your self into that and it feels amazing emotionally. However, i do find it doing more harm than good, we are doing it for the animals not for ourselves. From my practice the most effective thing is passive activism, talking to people and being a good example yourself. When you scream at people that they are murdrers and animal abusers (even though it is objectively true) they naturally start defending themselves without thinking. But if you present people with facts and let them actually think for themselves many do find there hypocrisy. And even if you dont make someone go vegan instantly you are still planting the seeds of doubt. I also had cases when people whom i did not even talk to about veganism went vegan because i simply was a good example that you can be happy as a vegan and you dont actually restrict yourself in anything.

Finally came around to watching this and I can't help but think that the most effective "activism", as defined here as actions that make people change their behavior, is legislation. It's actual prohibitions and mandates backed by state violence that are the most effective in shaping people's behavior. It's why we send our kids to school, why we use seat belts in cars and don't smoke on trains.. very unpopular behaviors/prohibitions when they were first proposed. Sometimes wars are fought about changing behaviors... The "right side" (the one that comports with reality) doesn't always win. Truly, when has activism ever changed anything, without "influencing" legislation to back up the change? I put influencing in quotes because it might be considered quite euphemistic for fighting a war, or cutting off a king's head, for example, but still. I can't think of anything. Maybe some technical advances were made that then fundamentally changed our behavior without any intervention by any governments, but that kind of change isn't connected to activism generally speaking, just like changes in fashion aren't. I guess what I'm saying is, I have a feeling that the most effective form of activism is lobbying whatever legislature makes the laws of the land we're trying to change the behavior of, which is very depressing.

I have kind of an unusual "how I went vegan story" you might find interesting: My whole life I had this sort of internal struggle with eating animals - on the one hand, I thought it was necessary, and normal and that god had put animals on this earth for the express purpose of being eaten by humans. But on the other hand, I had a lot of empathy towards animals and it made me SO sad to see trucks with chickens headed to... Well, you know. I remember in primary school (elementary) one of my classmates gave a speech about why she was vegetarian, and her reasoning was not religious, but she thought it was wrong to eat animals. I thought that was so dumb - if she was instructed not to eat meat by god or by religious leaders, that would make sense to me, but just saying "how would you feel if you were killed to be eaten?" was not enough for me. Years later, I am in 11th grade, and I am trying to figure out who I am. I want to be different but also fit in. I want to differentiate myself from my parents. I still have that internal struggle, but now I might actually do something with it. My environmental sciences teacher shows a documentary about the horrors (ethical and ecological) of factory farming, and I use that as my excuse, my "final straw", to go vegetarian. My mom is not happy, she is annoyed that now she will have to cook separately for me which is extra work on her plate. I just cook my own food, it's not hard. I stay vegetarian for YEARS but I purchase, and even COOK meat for my loved ones, I just don't eat it. I say "I understand that it's totally natural that bigger animals eat smaller ones, I just don't agree with factory farming. Hunting is okay, because there is no waste and the animal lives a good life prior " 🙄 Flash forward to 19-ish years old. I am gonna go on a cruise with my family, the first one ever, I know I'm gonna have to wear a swimsuit in front of people, I am cripplingly self-conscious and I want to lose 10lbs FAST. I don't care at all if it's healthy or not. I look on RU-vid to see what others are doing, and I come across a few videos about how people had cut out yogurt, cheese, eggs etc and it really helped. This leads me to a Freelee video about "raw til 4" veganism. I remembered hearing once that it was possible to actually starve on a diet of raw food, because you can't get enough calories if you don't eat enough volume. Bingo. I can eat raw food and feel full, but get less calories. It is totally unhealthy and I know it from the outset, but I don't care. I start eating this way, and watching more Freelee videos to get "recipe" ideas, then one day, one of YOUR response videos to Freelee pops up. I click on it, and it was like a bomb dropped. All of a sudden, the philosophy behind veganism is explained, it all makes sense, my cognitive dissonance is challenged, I go vegan for the animals and the planet, like, for REAL, the day I get back from my cruise (which was super lame btw). Overall, there were a lot of contributing factors that led to my going vegan. It was like dominoes. I wonder how anyone could ever study or measure something as complicated and convoluted as that.

(who I don't even know if they are vegan). Perhaps you could explain how any of that is helping the animals? * The prosecution is also "making assumptions" about a missing $130,000 that wasn't declared to the tax office which she is going to have to explain. She's just exploiting gullible vegans for the sake of personal income, by using second hand strategies that even PETA have given up on ... because they have been proven to be counter productive. If you or she want to sue me for that libel, I'll be happy to provide my name & address. But she never would, as it would mean the REST of her finances coming to light.

If her actions convert 100 people to veganism but put 100,000 people steadfastly offside, has it helped? I suspect not, in fact I think all aggressive and critical advocacy is a net negative to the animal justice movement. I believe that advocacy would be better focusing simply on awareness raising, encouragement and inclusive conversation. I'd measure success by the extent to which the public conversation regards animal justice and veganism as valid and worthwhile, rather than counting numbers of vegans (a metric that remains stubbornly low).

As a non vegan, I feel her protests push more people away from veganism than towards it. Her one on one street debates just turn into a shouting matches rather than having a grounded discussion. She is purely in if for the attention and the backlash and if it wasn't for the money she makes on OF, I highly doubt she would be able to continue this type of activism.

I like her and you all should understand the rage. but I think would be better the activism that that vegan couple did; Put screens on the street with recordings of the slaughterhouses and have conversations with people. Even some outside restaurants

Thank you for making a video on this important topic. This needs to be seriously discussed and evaluated more often by vegan activists.

already had to pause within 3 seconds of seeing her yell inside a restaurant establishment. this is such a good video about something we don't think twice about. I definitely cringe when people (try to) destroy centuries-old paintings for "climate" activism, so this video makes me feel not so alone ! And I have never realized they could be using their activism to market their OnlyFans. I think you do the best kind of activism

Loved the thumbnail, but your microphone, which is stupidly placed in front, ruins the view. Do you do OnlyFans by chance?
