Thinking about buying a 2017 MacBook Air in 2020? Check out why I think it's still worth it and leave a comment if you have any questions! Check out how the screen on my 2017 MacBook Air broke all of the sudden 😵: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R1bx2D2z4EU.html
Spot-on review. You touched on all the key points. I still have a 2013 Mac Air as well as a 2017 Mac Air. Both are in great condition and never abused. Recently I replaced battery (cell was going bad) and upgraded the SSD from 128 -> 256 GB in the 2013. After 10 years gave it extended life. With good care and avoiding latte spills, it should last a bit longer.
I have had mine since it came out It still works great, I had it sent Apple repair twice for display problems, but it work fine I used to edit videos, homework, I have used auto as as well
I have been having my MBA 2017 for over 6 months now. Love it so much! I was a Windows guy since 1992 and had been putting up with their crap since Windows 3.11, until they finally broke me with Windows 10. It's the ONLY version of Windows with the ability to force me to jump the fence and leave microsoft for good. Heck, I don't even use MsOffice anymore, replace it with Onlyoffice and Pages. I chose MBA 2017 for the price and connectivity. I persuaded my wife to get the MBP 2019. The OS is stable, light, everything is running smoothly, all the apps we needs are catered beautifully, and most importantly: NO FUCKING UNSTOPPABLE DESTRUCTIVE UPDATES!
Haha, I feel your pain with windows 10 updates. I still have to use windows for work and the amount of times a windows 10 update broke something is infuriatingly high.
TheFabytm Yeah, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I used Linux Mint for about a year before jumping to apple. I loved Linux Mint, and still do, but Mac is much better in terms of driver supports. I fucking hate Microsoft with a passion now. Ugh!
@@TheFabytm this is why I’m making the switch. Update jacked my HP up! So about a month ago I had used it on Friday night when I was done I went ahead and approved the update and shut down process. The next MORNING I tried to use it and it was insanely slow. Like I couldn’t do anything simple in a timely manner even compared to my old ass work desktop. So naturally did some troubleshooting then decided to do a previous restore point…no more computer. Yeah, that’s how it happened and it’s only 2 year old!! It is the 2nd time I’ve had major issues. Last time I had to have parts replaced but under the warranty, and extended my warranty when that happened. Sent it off again because it won’t even turn on NOTHING worked. When HP finished and I asked them what they found they told me the computer is being sent back to me and there’s nothing they can do. I have NEVER seen this happen! That was my final straw…MacBook here I come!
Thanks a ton dude for this short and insightful video, you certainly have influenced my buying decisions. And I guess as a student this laptop will be the best in the market right now for a student like me. Keep making videos like this your videos will definitely help a lot Of people in their buying decisions 💯❣️
guapo papi faby.. keep on uploading great contents! ❤️ ps. i bought my macbook air 2017 last 2018 and still i had no problem with it except the screen quality
My first video on your channel and it was awesome! I'm looking at a MacBook Air as a secondary laptop to my 17" Chromebook. One of the reasons I'm looking at this laptop is for iOS development so thank you for covering it!
I would say so, pair it up with an external monitor and you should be good to go (as long as you don’t plan on doing any PCB design, not all of the CADs are compatible with macOS).
Hi, I’ve been watching this video for several times. I love your video, it’s very informative. Thank you. And I just bought macbook air 2017. Thanks to you! Can I use an external graphic card on my macbook air 2017?
2017 MBAs do have Thunderbolt 2, so technically it should work (even if not as fast as with a Thunderbolt 3 port). It's just not supported officially though, so you'd have to figure out how to get it to work.
I want to buy a macbook for uni. I cant afford the newer versions, but am scared that it will start lagging after a year or so. And how many more years will it be able to upgrade to new ios’s?
I have this MacBook Air which I bought in February this year because I needed it for school because I had some sort of online science class thing and I did physics as one of the University subjects they were giving to us (I’m in year 9 btw), and I also needed it because next year I will probably start doing a couple or a few VCE subjects which I need a laptop for.
Thank you so much this is exactly what I was trying to find out I just need a mobile version of Mac OS so when I need to take my iPad Pro and my iPhone and do certain things especially as a musician thank you so much you answered all of my questions and as a photographer
My 2020 mba had some display issue so I sold it the other day and ordered a 2017 mba . Before 2020 I was using 2015 mba for a while . So am qualified to say I really don't like the keyboard in new mbas because travel distance is really important for someone types a lot like me . But the biggest issue I had with the 2020 version is I hate it started automatically whenever I lifted the lid. I didn't clean my keyboard for a year becoz of this and I don't understand why Apple did this . I use mba basically for writing and learning, so I don't need powerful chips like M1.
Absolutely not, don’t worry! It does get loud but that’s normal, the fan is doing its job! Also, the laptop can slow the CPU down if it gets too hot or turn off the laptop if the temperature gets too hot (haven’t heard this happening with macs).
I play Minecraft on mine (it's the 2015 version). I would just suggest you be careful because prolonged exposure to heat will eventually ruin the CPU, it concerns me the fact that MacBooks don't have good fans and they're not efficient on cooling themselves. Your CPU might thermo-throttle to prevent itself from damage but (if it happens which happens a lot with MacBooks, especially newer models) that would already be too late
Yes, but it depends on what your workflow will look like. If you want to do it professionally, go with a Pro (not even a 2020 Air will be much better than this 2017 model)!
Hey man! Saw a couple of ur vids and I loved them Btw...what used macbook would u recommend for around 700 dollars ,that looks like a modern ,sleek , slim Macbook, that has 16gb ram ? Thanks in advance
It depends on what you will be doing on the laptop, but if the answer is essays, watching RU-vid/Netflix and browsing the web, it’ll be plenty fast for these tasks!
Yes, light video/photo editing will be fine! As far as the mic and camera go, the mic sounds good and the camera is 720p, looks just fine in zoom meetings!
🙏🏻 I NEED YOUR OPINION 🙏🏻 Pro 256GB 2020 for 1400€ or this one - Air 128GB 2017 for 760€ // i know its a lot of difference obviously but i need it for work. Im not student, im 28 years old digital marketing manager so I need it firstly for that work, doing social media for clients, creating content, editing of photos in Lightroom, Photoshop, some base of video editing maybe too... do you think this air can handle it? I read two opinions, someone who say they are even editing on it and it works great and other who say “its only made for browsing” so please, tell me, what would you decide on my place? Hope to get your answer soon because I need to decide till Monday 😰
You say you are going to be doing this professionally, so the Pro is the clear choice in my opinion. It’s not like the Air cannot handle what you mentioned right now, but it won’t be as snappy as a Pro in Photoshop or while editing videos.
TheFabytm yeah but i don’t need it for professional video making editing etc... i explain what would i do on it, here and there some photo editing too.. honestly price for pro is double, so i think air is a better deal. Some of my colleagues use ps, illustrator, premier etc. on it and it works good for them! Do you think 760€ is a good deal for him? Im from europe, Here prices are generally high . But its completely new one
Then I think the Air will serve you well! At first I avoided suggesting it thinking you will be doing this professionally (many layers etc). I am from Europe too, that price is quite good for the 2017 Air!
TheFabytm Thank you🙏🏻 last question, would you rather get brand new air 2017 for 815€ or opened air 2019 with retina and touch id (used bit only 23 cycles) for 800€ which warranty is only till end of august this year?:)
I’d get the 2019 one, but only if you are ok with its keyboard (keys don’t push too far and it sounds a bit loud). They changed the keyboard on the new 2020 models.
I'm planning on buying this macbook air pretty soon. I although wanted to ask, after a while of usage does it still run graphics programs like adobe photoshop, illustrator etcetra smoothly? Also, does it support video editing?
@Arushi Rautela @cynthia the laptop can handle the tasks that you mentioned, though it does run a bit hot and will throttle a bit, so this needs to be kept in mind! Also, it does support video editing!
I really liked apple logo in 2017 and at the same time it is 3 years old . I see the web cam is good in 2017 than 2020 any idea ? I am confused to go with 2020 i3 or 2027 i5 my usage is just MS office and surfing. Also I love watching movies . Display bad in 2017 ? Please advise
If u hook up to external monitor all the time wont the life of laptop will get less ? As in use of graphic card will be extensive affecting it ? Also the battery ?
You should still discharge the laptop to about 20-30% from time to time. You don’t have to worry about the graphics card, just make sure to periodically (once every week - 2 weeks) discharge the battery as I mentioned above!
What are you studying? If you’re an engineering student, I’d recommend the MacBook as it can run specialized, computer-only software, otherwise, the iPad Pro for note taking!
The 2015 MacBook Pro should be slightly faster and it does have a better screen. If you value the battery life and portability of the Air though, the Pro can’t compete!
Thanks for the awesome video. Just curious to know if this laptop is suitable for video editing? I'm aware that 4k video edition can't be done with this machine. But wanted to know if videos in 1080-60fps videos can be edited.
Glad you enjoyed the video! 1080p60FPS will work, I’d bet even 4k60 can be done but it would probably take long to render and export! Also, go with Final Cut Pro for the best performance on this machine!
Hi, I need your advice. I just got the MacBook Pro 2020 (base model) but had to return it as it was faulty. I really love the 2017 Air’s design. I’m considering the MacBook Air 2017 i7 512GB for £1079 from the refurbished store (inc. vat). I am considering it for RU-vid watching, web browsing, word processing, portability, and apps from Mac App Store (e.g quiz games). Is it worth it for me or should I buy another base pro?
Hi, the 2017 is great, but at that price, I just don't think it's worth it. Either look for a cheaper one(I have refurbished units from Amazon linked in the description) or go for the 2020 model.
Hi! I wonder if you'd mind helping me with a question. I don't do any gaming on my laptop. Currently I have an older Lenovo (8 years old?) And it's time to upgrade for sure... I use Zoom quite a bit, and I have been using my laptop more, and a friend of mine told me I'm definitely at the end of my rope with my current laptop. If I'm an Android user by phone and I've only used a Mac a few times is this going to be difficult to switch to a Mac? Outside of comfort level and some experiences, Am I going to have any issues with any applications?
I’m considering purchasing I want this for my senior year and into my college years! But can it handle sims cc and mods or is that a bit to much. It’s not super important but it would be fun to be able to play
Hi everyone , currently I have Mi notebook 14(i5 10th gen/mx250gpu / 8Gb ram / 512gb SSD) and it's a 2year old laptop and condition is decent and has no problems so far. And Someone gave me exchange offer for this laptop with MacBook Air 2017 ( 8g/128gb). Condition is as new . Should I go with it or not ?
@@TheFabytm i bought MacBook pro 2019 and after a month of usage and no drops of the device or any harsh handling I have horizontal lines that are visible on dark colors. I'm so disappointed in device. And I must bring it to warranty and be 15 days without device because that like per apple rules. Screw apple. I never liked them and it was justified. The product quality is poor Keyboard keys completely destroyed two buttons, they wore, scratched, faded. I have device for 5 months. I'm heavy user.
Could you try going opening the About Mac menu from the Apple logo and going to the storage tab? That would tell you more about what’s taking up space.
If you want to take digital notes during class, go with the iPad Pro, it’ll be a much better experience with the pen. Otherwise, the MacBook would probably be better as it is a full fledged computer.
Looking for a portable laptop for school since my gaming one is too big and feels more like a desktop that isn't a desktop for what I use it for Wanna divide my tasks and try something that isn't another windows computer.
Hey TheFabytm , could you please tell me the cost of this laptop and please tell if it would be perfect and nice for moderate study work, could you plz?
The Air 2017 will be enough for those tasks, it just depends on the screen you want. If you want a high resolution Retina display, go for the 2020 model, otherwise 2017.
I’d suggest looking at a Pro, it’ll be worth it in the end! The Air will be able to do what you’ll want to do but it might slow down if you end up with too many things open (as it usually happens when writing code).
hi, i'm about to be a college student this year (pre med course) can this support my every day tasks since it's online classes for now? i'm about to get this because macbook air 2020 isn't available in our country yet. hope you respond, thank you in advance! :)
Im considering buying an new laptop for university. Im stuck between the the 2017 macbook air and the 2020 macbook air. I know that the new macbook has an i3 10th gen processor, where the 2017 is a i5 5th gen. Im worried about the macOS becoming outdated on the 2017 model and it not being supported anymore. Aswell as the Intel generations... I would want to use Office 365, youtube, netflix and web browsing. I haven't been able to get a good review from a students perspective so Im not sure which model to get. I don't mind spending the extra money if it will last in the long run. Thanks :)
The 2020 will last longer, but I believe the 2017 is still quite good nowadays. The laptop you see in the video is used more heavily than what you described and it has no problem keeping up. In the end, if you want to future proof your purchase or want the retina screen, go with the 2020. Otherwise, the 2017 will still serve you well for at least 3 years.
I wasn’t sure so I looked it up online. People have used Elgato and obs on much slower Macs so you should be good to go. Avoid the 128GB model if you want to store the recordings.
can we do mediocre video editing? and for free? and, in case I need extra storage, should I use the monthly paying iCloud storage or buy separate external hard disk? which will you prefer?
Yes, iMovie is free as far as I know. It’s not as advanced as FCP X but it should be enough. I’d recommend getting an external SSD, you can go the iCloud route but you will be tied to an internet connection and it won’t be as fast.
As far as I can remember, there is no 2016 model, so you only have 2 options. The 2015 model has the same CPU as the 2017 model but lower clocked. If the price difference isn’t big, go with the 2017 version, if the battery hasn’t been changed, you have a much higher change of buying one with a battery that is still OK!
TheFabytm apple.stackexchange.com/questions/317239/macbook-air-display-color-temperature-changes-after-logging-in It is the same with this one. My night shift is turned off so I dont know what is the problem.
If you want to become a RU-vidr, I’d suggest a MacBook Pro for editing. The MacBook Air will do the job, at least for now, but is pretty loud when the fans spin at max speed (that would happen when exporting a video).
If you are just starting out, the Air will be fine for you! Just know that in 2-3 years you will need to upgrade if you’ll want to keep doing it and upping the production value.
Is this laptop good for coding like c#,java nd python or android development learning??plzz hlp me I'm student should I buy ds laptop for learning or not??
I use both windows and Mac everyday. I use Windows because I have to, it’s what my work provides, I use Mac at home for everything because I like it better. I still have GPU driver issues on my Windows laptop because it has 2 GPUs (one integrated, one dedicated) and I need to reinstall the driver daily. My personal advice would be to buy a Mac!
