Here's why a used MacBook Air is a fantastic value!

A few short years ago MacBook Airs were overpriced and outdated. Now, however, with the classic silver bezel model discontinued and newer ones taking market share, these older models are becoming a great value used MacBook option for a lot of people. If you're shopping for a cheap used MacBook for school or light productivity, especially if you're considering a unibody MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air is worth a look.

I am a die-hard 11 inch MacBook fan. So when buying a MacBook last year, I chose a early 2015 model with 4gigs of ram and 256gigs of storage for about 450 bucks. Now thinking of it, that’s a HORRIBLE PRICE

Thank you Luke for the video, which I watched on my 2015 MacBook Air! Purchased it from a university student who had just purchased a 2019 MacBook Pro and sold it to me for $350...Core i5, 8gb ram, 256 ssd, in immaculate condition. I upgraded the SSD to an OEM 512 SSD and loving my move from Windows to Mac OSx! Hoping to get a few more years out of this MBA. Again, thank you!

Pretty impressed with the performance. Thanks for the great videos, Luke!

I have a 2015 Air w/ 8GB / 120 SSD that I found on eBay about a year ago for $325, and I have a 2012 MacBook Pro upgraded to 16GB and 500GB SSD. The Air lives in my backpack and goes to meetings with me, basic office machine, the Pro sits on my desk connected to an external monitor with an external keyboard, mouse and trackpad. I find no wanted for performance on anything I would do on these machines. (I have a work owned Mac Pro 2013 on my desk at work at is super under used)

My wife has that exact MBA from late 2013 with 4GB of RAM. She's used it almost every day for the last 7 years, uses it all day to teach remotely on Zoom and loves it. It's an astonishingly reliable workhorse and I'll be hard pressed to get her to replace it, when it eventually is no longer getting updates. What you need to get work done, Vs what you want to brag on reddit forums, is often vastly different.

You can upgrade the storage on the macbook air to something faster than the stock SSD and bigger for a modest cost maybe $20-30 and get substantial gains in performance, somewhat negating the argument that the unibody macbook pro is more upgradeable.

Thank you for giving this underrated MBA machine love, not into the unibody Pros though. I purchased my 2017 MBA just a couple months ago. I got it brand new for $749 (although I don't need it). I have always wanted this iconic design in my collection, and I am so happy with my purchase. I own several newer model MBAs including a 15' MBP 2019, I use them for different things. However, I use this MBA 2017 everyday, I also use it at nights as a sleep machine, and I am fine with the screen resolution when surfing/typing during the day. Edit: Another thing, due to the pandemic and the need for computers with stay at home and school work, the prices of used units have not depreciated. I have noticed a jacking of prices on ebay for this MBA and the 11'. After the pandemic, I hope the prices go down. Greed is so disappointing.

Great video. I just purchased a 2015 13 MacBook Air i7 8gb 256gb SSD for $415. I didn't want to spend more for a 2015 MacBook Pro i7 8gb because honestly paying more it would just make sense to save up for a M1 MacBook Air, however I really am waiting for the M1X or M2 to come out as these new MacBooks have a very limited number of ports. I enjoy your videos, Luke, and I am subscribed, but I have to say I only understand about one third to one half of what you say......all of the technical jargon just goes over my head. But I still want to watch, because maybe someday it will begin to make sense. I recently bought an early 2015 Air, "refurbished" from Amazon, for about $350. Since I can barely tell one laptop from another, and it's difficult (at least for me) to compare older models, I just bought this on faith. I have a mid 2014 iMac for home, and it generally does what I need, but I wanted something very portable and small to take out sometimes. This Air seems to fit the bill, it came with a "100%" battery, and, while it's not exactly like my iMac, it's close enough. I don't know if I overpaid (for July 2021) but it seemed a decent value. Thanks for all the information, Luke......at least for the little I understand. :)

I just bought a (Late 2013) 15.4 MacBook Pro 2.6Ghz i7, 16gb of RAM, 512GB flash storage, dual graphics & battery cycle is 86 & 7416 out of 7416 mAh for $600. Perfect condition when I got it, it felt like I was opening it for the first time because the seller kept everything even the plastic the MacBook comes in & the piece of paper between the screen & keyboard. After watching this video I’m a little worried I could of overpaid because Covid raising prices & I’m not sure how much they were going for normally.

You should do a Hackintosh Build Guide with used parts under like $500. I'm sure it would be beneficial to a ton of people.

Still rocking my 13inch early 2011 Macbook Pro. Upgraded to SSD and 8GB RAM a few years ago still a solid machine. New 2020 MacBook Air has me thinking though... Any recommendations on best year/model to split difference between 2011 and 2020?

I am very happy you put out this video. I am not a college kid, but a middle aged man who just does not have access to funds to get a new or even a slightly used Mac. At one point (please laugh at this because I am a hardcore iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch user) used to be Windows all the way. In the last few years, I have been dabbling with Mac and discovered I prefer macOS over Windows. I did pick up a 2012 Macbook Pro 3 years ago (basically brand new, it was purchased and sat in a closet for years) for just $200! I think I ended up only paying another $150 to add RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Times got difficult and I had to sell it. But, this is the Macbook Air part, I picked up a 2013 Macbook Air on FB Market for $75. The guy I bought it from said it did not work. I brought it home. I paid $5 for a Magsafe 2 attachment for the original Magsafe charger. I hooked it up and it turned on just fine. That was a year a go. It work alright. Id like to get a larger capacity M.2 SSD, but this thing has worked like a charm for me. I do not do anything really heavy except rending videos on it and it still beats all of my Windows systems I have at rendering vids. Keep up the good work, Luke!

anyone have recommendations for me, I dont want to spend the 16" money, but I'm looking for something to edit my RU-vid videos, and eventually going into 4k format videos using Final Cut Pro x, if the 16" is a better value I'll do it, but If theres a way I can get an iMac or MacBook with a monitor I edit at home so it doesn't matter but I just would love more ram and a graphics card... I'm actually coming from a MacBook 13" (early 2015) 128GB SSD and 8GB Ram 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

eBay has about a 1000 MBA's listed as of 8/23/20. If you do a little negotiating you'd be surprised what you can pick one up for. I purchased one today for $211 plus a shipping cost of $29. Great deals await

my main problem with the unibody mbp is just how heavy it is. lugging it to school makes my backpack really heavy. so I would pick up a MacBook Air if I had a little bit more money.

Rocking a Mid 2012 11 i5 4GB 128SSD - for all my digital + RU-vidr life... Paid 235 EUR for it - not only is the best laptop I ever had for this price range, it's also unique as the seller was Russian, and the keyboard has Cyrillic prints lol - Great video as usual my friend.
