👁 About this video : Today I drive a 2021 Toyota Supra for the second time. My first reaction after driving the 2021 Supra was underwhelmed. I felt that the turbo was very laggy feeling. It still does feel much slower around town than the 2020 Supra due to the turbo lag. 2020 Supra has instant turbo power which makes it feel very snappy around town. Now driving the 2021 Supra on some fun roads and using the engine more. It does have a very healthy motor and long power band. I can tell the 40 more horsepower carries the car better then the 2020 Supra. Thats the only noticeable difference I found comparing the 2021 Supra to the 2020. Keep in mind it will cost you several thousand dollars more to buy a 2021 Supra over the 2020. And you will have to spend more to tune it because the ECU is locked. Most 2020 Supras, like my car, have unlocked ECU's and tuning was normal. WIth the 2020 Supra, adding a bigger turbo will lake it actually faster than the tuned power form a 2021, but of course you'll spend a few grand on the turbo kit. SO overall both years of the A90 Supra are great options and offer a bit of a different driving experience. 2021 has smooth power while the 2020 has instant torque. Tuned the 2020 is a bit aggressive in torque and fight traction so a bigger turbo would be great to smooth that out.

Great review of the 2021 GR Supra and I'm glad you gave it a second chance. I have one of the A91 Special Editions in the rare Refraction Blue color (1 of 500 built) and it's been a blast to drive and own. My ECU is also one of the few 2021s that are unlocked and I'll eventually get it tuned with E50 once the mod bug hits. At the moment, my A91 Supra is using a JB+ which adds another 4+ psi of boost and ~40rwhp which is plenty of power for the stock tires to handle.

Enjoy your oil loss. Half of 2021 owners are dealing with low oil warnings and having the dealerships buy back etc. Likely stemming from the piston and head changes for 2021.

I've found out the JB4 is the way to go at the moment. adding 80-100hp, 18+ psi for the 2021

First love ur videos, thank u for the hard work. I am planning on buying a new car, kinda want the C8 but can’t get one(mark ups) want the 2015 GTR which u have a 14 is my dream car but I am scared of problems comes with used GTRs (had a AP1 S2K with engine problem which I don’t know till my tuner told me) so I am seriously considering the new Supra and I was debating on getting the 20 or 21, this video got me the answer, I am going with the 20. Because I do want mod and tune mine also save few bucks why not. Thank u again.

Nice man! Cant go wrong! The GTR to be honest is a pretty reliable car. Most are bulletproof with no issues like my car. As long as you buy one that isnt crazy modified it should be fine. But much easier and cheaper to find a low mileage stock Supra. Those seem to be bulletproof too! Enjoy it!

Even though I've never driven one but it seems like the tuning options for a Supra can be hard to choose from. I guess it depends on the owner and how much they're willing to spend.

Tuning is pretty simple on them. Most owners like myself seem to go with ECUtek. Makes great power!

I'm leasing a 2021 M340 with same engine as 2021 supra (382hp factory state of tune). I felt the same about the M340 when I first drove it compared to older B58 cars like the M240i..just didn't have as much low down grunt but it pulled harder up top. Turning the boost up 4.5psi via JB+ and 30% ethanol in the tank has changed that though.haha Torque is great now down low and it just keeps pulling to redline. I've ran low 12s @ 117mph in the quarter like this, no other mod. Keep in mind the M340 is over 3800lbs so bit heavier than supra.

i have a 2021 and its ecu is locked sadly, still waiting to see what happens with the tuning. ive done a intake but rather not get into the downpipe till i can tune the car, i haven't had any oil problem but cars only over a 1000 miles so far so hard to say what will happen. but so far the 2021 has been solid for me.

From what I've seen, using thicker oil will solve the eventual oil issue. And I've seen tuner being able to unlock the ECU. Visconti I believe is the company that does it

The turbo size is the same on both 20 and 21. They even make almost identical power once tuned on ethanol. Pump gas the 21 makes a little more power because of the lower compression.

Really? From what I've seen, tuned 2021's still make about 40 more to the wheels. But I guess the lower compression does make it only go so far with tuning.

Both generations are fun/fast after FBO, (93 or E85) Tune (if you can tune your 2021). I was mad when the 2021's came out with so may updates from Toyota. With the locked ECU's and oil burning issues of the 2021 I'm happy with a car that is tunable and reliable so far.

you got it upside down, the 2021 supra has less turbo lag, due to it's 6 port manifold. which is why they stopped making the pure 700 turbo and just the 800 for the 2021. it takes roughly the same amount of time to spool a 700 turbo in a 2020 then it takes a 2021 on a 800. what you are feeling is the change in torque curve, they smooth out the torque curve on the 2021,

Yeah that's what I was implying. The later torque curve feels like turbo lag when you're driving. The 2021 Torque comes on later in the RPM and makes it feel laggy in the slow speeds compared to full torque with the 2020 at 1800 rpm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sy1ESwz3t-s.html A bigger turbo on my car will make it feel much smoother in power delivery like the 2021 has. I forget what channel I saw but the 2021 Supra was way faster on track. I have one and been having fun with it. Oth years are awesome, besides with tunes they’re better than stock anyway.

Might have been motor trend or something. But they are a bit faster around the track since it has more top end. Tuning, from what people said, they make the same kind of power since 2021 has a lower compression then 2020

I have a 2021 since the beginning of last month. The ones that are able to ECU tune now have an ECU made within the 1st half of 2020. The oil consumption issues vary but people are reporting the build dates of those same 2021s that do are from early 2020 also while later ones are fine. Saw a guy with later year build date say he drives it hard on Laguna Seca and it's still fairly full at 2000 miles. Someone could be lucky and have a later built Supra with an early built ECU lol. Mine is built on 1/21 and I drive it 95% of the time on Sport+Manual, go hard here and there and it's still full too but I'm still in the break in period and it even states in the manual that it's normal to see oil consumption greater during it. As for the sound. The crackles and burbles are there but they mainly come in when the engine is warmed and after revving high and then when it drops. Same with a warm start it'll do it's Rice Krispy thing. Not sure how often the 2020 one is but it's still there and I love it haha.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed damn I would have enjoyed that since I really do love it haha. It's a car I rarely listen to music in because the sound is just 🤌🏼. Yeah the oil consumption issue makes sense it would affect earlier 2021s more because of the different spec'd engine that could have been initially overlooked so it's possible Toyota/BMW did different on the later ones. It's just that I have to wait until someone is able to unlock the ECU for me to get a tune haha. Your channel definitely helped convinced me to grab a MKV Supra and learn about the things I can do with it so keep up the great content bro!

The 2020 is loud even stock. Half the people don't like it so that's probably why they toned it down. Seems like all the European cars got really quiet for 2021. Hopefully you can get a tune soon! It really opens up the power

Technically. For 2020 the special edition was the 'Launch Edition'. For 2021 they have an 'A91 Edition. All that adds is black wheels on both cars, 21 gets a stipe, and blue stitching. While 2020 had red interiors. So it's just looks

I’m still not sold on the 21’s. Too many people having oil consumption problems. So far I haven’t heard of anyone being able to unlock the ecu’s for tuning on a recent built 21. There were some early 21’s that were still tunable, but I don’t think it was a high number.

The oil consumption issue is blown way out of proportion. Mine is at 4000 miles and still full. And all the 21s with ecu built date before 6/20 are tunable. The ones after that are not. It’s not random. The suspension is much better in the 21s. If you’re going to keep the car stock, like most people who can afford these, 21s are better. If you want to tune it, go with 2020.

@@dufferego87 It's definitely not blown out of proportion. Also, the large majority of people buying a Supra buy with plans on tuning. This all stems from the piston and head changes. Why should people have to buy a 2020 with none of the chassis and tuning upgrades to be able to tune? People should be able to use a JB4 until the dme is cracked without having to worry about low oil warnings coming on.

And the car is under warranty. Use the jb4 and send it. If it starts consuming, take it of and take it to the dealer. Easy as that.

@@dufferego87 20? You're delusional. Nice job making up numbers. The issue stems directly from the change in pistons. None of the other B58 prior have this issue. You're waisting your time trying to tell someone about oil consumption when I own a fbo 700whp 135i. Have fun wiring in a DP fix with your JB4 to mask your engine light and then keep it wired in throwing your AFR's from your 02 sensors. You've probably never worked on a BMW once in your life before the MKV.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed so I did have to take out my ecu and send it away so someone can do a bench unlock and they send the ecu back to you. Then you tune with ecutek. I made 470hp and 555 torque. But im like 4500ft above sea level and blend was also off.

I do like the Supra, but I'm not convinced that now is a good time to buy one! Still speculation at the moment I know, but some of the rumours floating around about the specs and pricing of the new Z have the potential to adversely affect used Supra prices. Even for someone who is not interested in seeing what the Z has to offer at all, there are plenty of people that will be directly comparing the two cars. If Nissan is smart, I think the battle could definitely be in their favour and that could affect Supra sales (and resale values) considerably.

Sure is! But from what we're seeing with tuning. The 2020 and 2021 make the same power after mods and tuning. The lower compression on the 2021 doesn't let it add the same amount of power that the 2020 can.

Oh yeah the tune makes it crazy fast! Adds 100 WHP and 150 WTQ over stock. Major difference. Bigger turbos and E85 get these near 700!

Yeah the Supra makes some good noises for sure! 2021 its much quieter stock tho compared to a stock 2020

I recommend anyone to stay clear of the 2021 until they sort out the oil burning issues, likely due to the rush in changing the pistons and head for 2021. The dme is also locked still. Get a pre June 2020 or wait for 2022.

I've been seeing a lot about that. Crazy! I know Toyota spent a lot of time on this first B58 and the 2020 cars seems super reliable and make stupid power. Interested to see what the 2022 will be!

Yeah thats what I'm hearing. But how quickly does it eat oil? Would a 5k mile oil change interval be enough to not worry about it?

@@BrosFOURRSpeed on the forums some people start to see low oil notifications at 700 miles, while majority of people experience the problem around 1,200 to 2000 miles. Been a big enough issue to where people are told to just bring them in ASAP.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed In the 2021 M340 I'm leasing, I had to add a quart of oil at 6500 mile mark before it's first oil change. BMW acts like it's normal...oil was changed at a little over 9k miles and the car now has almost 14k miles. So far so good, haven't had to add anymore..yet

If you want to MOD, get a 2020. If you want reliable, get a 2020. The 2020 was the engine toyota tore apart and reverse engineered to their specs, so likely more reliable than the 2021 which comes out directly from the Z4, reports already show the 2021s have oil comsumption issues and toyota knows this. The extra HP difference is easily overcome by a tune only. Suspension-wise, most of us wont feel a difference since we wont be tracking them.

Oh wow that's an interesting point I didn't know. I know with a bigger turbo mine will be way smoother in power delivery and crank out like 600! Lowering springs on either car are all they need to be perfect riding.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed let's see way overpriced for the performance, no remote start, supra connect is useless and the seats are not comfortable😑. I've had a Camarillo 2ss, charger 392, golf r and Kia stinger gt awd. All cost less then 48k. Meanwhile supra cost close to 60.

Well it's fun to drive, can make 700 HP on the stock motor reliably, handles well and is very mod happy. Just like the MK4. Looks like a Supra to me ;)
