The GR86 is redesigned and Toyota has made some big improvements. On the outside you will find all new sheetmetal, 18in wheels, and LED lighting. On the inside there are revised seats, 8in infotainment system and digital display. Under hood is a 2.4L flat-4 that produces 228HP and is mated to a 6-speed manual. Is the 2022 Toyota GR86 a BETTER performance car than a Hyundai Elantra N?

5:10 This is a big error. The Elantra N comes standard with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires which is quite literally the next step up from the GR 86’s Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. In fact the Elantra N’s tires (245/35 19) are larger than the GR 86’s tires (215/40 18) in nearly every dimension. Therefore the tire advantage is actually given to the Elantra N.

Hi Joe it’s Mark. We asked ourselves the same question. Toyota GR86 or Hyundai Elantra N? The Elantra is a extremely desirable car. Turbo power, beautiful wheels, and useable back seats. However when I saw GR86 the thing is gorgeous, reminds me of a Porsche. You are right about rear fenders. Leather and ultra suede interior is on another level. So we bought the Toyota. Have loved it every day we have owned it. Handles like on rails. A blast to drive. Great video, you and your wife are a team!

I was looking long and hard at the GR86. I took my 2017 Elantra in for maintenance, just to get everything up to snuff - new tires, regularly scheduled maintenance, etc., - as I knew I was looking to trade in eventually. So, while I was working remotely for the day at the local Hyundai dealership, I decided to stretch my legs in the showroom. Only two cars in there - full black out versions of the Santa Fe and Santa Cruz. Then the showroom doors opened behind me, and a beautiful, white Elantra N Line rolled in - right off the truck. It took my breath away - the lines, the blackout areas. Then I looked inside - the grey coloring with the red stitching, the leather wrapped seats and wheel. Took it for a test drive, told the salesperson to work up a trade in value on my then current Elantra and what it would be for this - and that we would take at 5:00. 30 minutes later, that beauty of a car was mine. Made some mods - installed interior well lighting (set to red to match the stitching), 30% tint, getting ready to rebadge with gloss black instead of chrome. Just a wonderful vehicle. And I got $9500 on my trade in - which I paid $16,000 for back in 2016. So glad I got the N Line. At 47, my favorite vehicle I have ever owned.

I give Subaru and Toyota a lot of credit for developing these performance twins...they do drive so nice, although the interior does feel a little cheap. That said, I still prefer my MX-5 Miata for being just a bit more purposeful, overall. Either way, I'm just glad these kinds of cars are still being made because not many people buy them (sadly).

@MarTech56
@MarTech56 2 года назад
I think they're both great cars you can't go wrong with either but they're also very different. I definitely think the Elantra N outperforms the GR86 in every way; it has more hp, more torque, it's only about 300-400 lbs heavier, it's comes with a valved exhaust that you can change with the press of a button. Better tires. Better seats, bigger screens, more practical. The Elantra will beat the GR86 on a dig and a roll and also on the track with it's electronic limited slip differential the Elantra N is the way to go specially for it's price since they're both the same and also take in consideration the markups that dealers are putting. So it's all about preference but the Elantra N is clearly the better car!!!

@@farhan007 the end result is the N is a faster car everywhere. @@AnonAnon-qi4ts the world is a gradient. It isn't discrete. So yes the 86 sources parts that are mass produced. Of course the motor is sourced from a mass production line here the block is used on other platforms. But on a scale of dedicated sports car to practical economy car with economy car traits like high h point seating position, high center of gravity, low chassis rigidity etc, the N is closer to the practical economy car platform and the 86 is closer to the bespoke not copy and pasted dedicated sports car with sports car traits. The 86 is going to be slightly slower in a straight line. According to Car and Driver, who make sure their tests are done in a consistent manner, they are literally a tenth of a second apart in a quarter mile drag and .1 mph off in trap speed. So slightly slower, but far more go kart like engagement and far more predicable rotatable lol ight weight chassis that is going to be far more eager to turn in and change direction due to a more balanced weight distribution with less mass up front.

It's been bulletproof with no problems, even surviving having a tree fall on it with very few scratches and one small dent, not even breaking the glass on the hatch. With this redesign, the performance, the ability to tune and modify the car for more performance, and pricing that doesn't suffer Honda's markups on the SI and Type R's, trading into this car sounds awfully tempting.

If they took out the suede, had full "leather" seats, added a sunroof, and had decent cup holder placement, I'd like it a lot more. The suede really kills it. I just can't see it being very durable, especially on the door, right where rain is going to drop in.

@@darkobelisk4076 the neptune blue should have been called clown world blue. Then it would have appealed to us old folks and the era we live in. A dark green would be nice too. And definitely should have auto rev match in a modern car like this. Around town with traffic lights every 10 feet it would have been a feature that would save the transmission and clutch life if a computer did it and just turn it off when you doing spirited driving. The cayman i drove that had it made the experience around town feel like i was at the track. Big big mistake on Toyota to not add that feature it really the only thing not making it perfect.

Elantra N hands down. It's the whole package; versatility of a sedan, turbo power, active exhaust, active dampers, adjustable LSD, bigger/wider PS4S tyres, track warranty. It'd run rings around this Toyota. Plus the 8 speed DCT option is a masterpiece. The real kicker is the Elantra N offers all that for the same price. Plus, how boring does the Toyota sound in comparison to the pops, crackles and bangs of the Elantra N 😁

@Xiuhcoatl0352
@Xiuhcoatl0352 9 месяцев назад
Nothing wrong with the GR86 but I would take the N over it. But admittedly I am probably biased. I have a Veloster N. My friend has a new Subaru BRZ and it’s an absolute blast to drive. I think you couldn’t go wrong either way. Depends on what you want. I would say the N competes closer to the CTR. And if better as a daily. Just depends on what you want out of it.

Gotta critique the center console area. The screen buttons could be moved over to allow more vertical width, the heated seat buttons could be pushed up for a small open tray, the dead area behind the heated seats could be where the charge ports and connection are located with another small storage slot. The cup holder space that housed the connectivity could then be used as a storage space then.

@wbwayne8887

Exactly
@adamb8552
@adamb8552 2 года назад
Well this just comes across as ignorant. Fair enough if you prefer the 86, it’s a good car, but it certainly doesn’t have better everything and it’s not just numbers on a spec sheet. Those numbers translate into real world performance, where the N really has the edge. The N also has far better tech, interior, and customisation options. The exhaust. If you wanted an auto then the N’s DCT is a no brainer. Lots of ways the N could pull ahead, figuratively and literally.
@throttle7504
@throttle7504 2 года назад
@@adamb8552 I think what your not understanding is it is about driver feel, people get caught up on horse powers numbers, 0 to 60, etc. Those things are not what makes a great car, to be honest the Elantra N is in a different category with it being a small 4 door sedan. Cars that really compete with the GR86 would be like the MX-5, and the S2000 of the past.
@adamb8552
@adamb8552 2 года назад
@@throttle7504 I do understand that, it’s why I owned a previous gen 86. Those numbers add a lot to the driver feel though, it’s hard to find a video of someone driving an N that isn’t grinning and I had that same experience. Not just the max numbers either but how they’re put down, I find it fun to have the full torque/power available from about 3k RPM vs having to redline an 86 to briefly achieve a (smaller) peak HP. I bet you’d like the 86 a lot less than you do now if it had 150hp. They may be in a different category technically but if you’re weighing up these two as a driver’s car then they directly compete. It would be much stranger to be choosing between a new GR86 and an S2000. For me, the N came out on top and its performance played a big part in that. It pretty much comes with everything you would want to mod the 86 with, stock, for a similar price and under warranty. I agree that the 86 looks better, and RWD is nice, but at the end of the day looks are superficial and in real world use RWD has limited advantage over a FWD experience as good as the N’s. It’s good for losing traction, sure.
@throttle7504
@throttle7504 2 года назад
@@adamb8552 This is an argument I’m already done with, I can already tell your the typical person who is all about numbers and bragging, I would own an S2000 in a heart beat over a POS Elantra N, I could care less the N would beat it in performance, the N is an ugly car cheaply built.

The GR86/BRZ is the winner in my book for a few reasons: good looks (inside and out), longitudinally mounted engine, manual transmission option and rear wheel drive (that's a huge win with RWD). There are more reasons, but those are the major ones for me. I probably would have bought one but they were impossible to find (or order). Instead, I bought a 2022 WRX.
