Is The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid The One To Get?

As long as you're OK with the angular design, the Elantra has a great deal going for it. The pricing is right and the fuel economy is fantastic. The base MSRP is under $25,00 and that gets you one of the better handling options in the segment and 54 MPG. Want even more grip and some premium touches? That'd be the Elantra Limited. With wider than average tires, one of the few fully independent suspensions in the segment and a smooth dual-clutch automatic, I'm almost forced to ask why some of the hybrid tech hasn't been borrowed for an N or N-line model.

I got the 22 hybrid in late 2021 and I love it. I’ve had zero issues and the fuel economy is to die for. I’ve done several drives between provinces (13 hours straight on average) and not only have I been perfectly comfortable, but I’ve gotten better than rated fuel economy doing so. @RamBatra-uu8wj we've had the Hybrid Elantra since December. Absolutely no issues so far. About 7,000 miles. I deliver cars for a major Transporter, so I've driven just about everything. Doesn't make me a mechanical expert, but I haven't heard about any issues from the dealers. Hyundai did have an issue with a completely different engine, (not the Elantra Hybrid) but they were taking care of that under warranty. Also the keyless entry issue had insurance companies taking action and both Kia and Hyundai issued fixes on the latest models. It basically came down to price and looks for us. And 55 mpg! All the manufacturers have issues. Toyota too. But they are better overall, I'd say. And you will extra pay for it in a compatible hybrid.

I bought my 2023hybrid Elantra a year ago. I have 25k on it now and love it! Comfortable and roomy ( I’m 6ft2in and 210 pounds) I easily have 2-3 inches of extra headroom and seats are comfortable. Averages about 55mpg and looks sleek with a tint. Only gripe is the paint tends to scratch easily but that’s it. I’d say 9/10! I recommend it.

I checked out an Elantra Hybrid Limited a year ago. Really thought I would get it based on reviews and specs. That said, the headroom didn't quite work for me. The windshield was too short and sloped too - had a little trouble seeing stop lights when I was first in line. Plus while it had plenty of legroom for my 6' 3" frame the telescoping on the steering wheel wasn't enough. Basically, being taller ruined another automotive option for me!😢 If you're average size though its a great option. Really impressed by it.

I have a '23 Limited hybrid, overall has been amazing! Better fuel economy than advertised, the tech and driver assistance features are to die for at this price (paid sticker price). Only a few issues mostly climate/weather related. Drives terribly in the snow and spins the wheels like nobody's business on wet roads, the Hankook tires that came on the car are the worst tires I've ever driven on.
@TUTruth
@TUTruth 10 месяцев назад
I have the same. I will say the electronics are saying I'm doing better than advertised, but measuring with other means, mid/high 40's, which is still great. I look at it this way if Gas is $5/gallon and I get 50 miles. That can also be $1 for 10 miles. And way back in the day like 70's/80's that is a real ratio for cars. $1/gallon and 10 mpg, so this car does turn the clock nearly all the way back doing that.

Another good and informative report from Alex. I still have grave reservations about DCT's. I drove one some years ago, a VW, and slow maneuvers, also parking, was not good. Too much jerkiness. We drive a Tuscon Blue Hybrid with a 6-speed torque converted auto and it works fine. Hyundai need to make this 226bhp set up as an option to the Elantra and Sonata. One area the Elantra has over it closest rival, the Corolla, is decent rear leg room. The Corolla is fine if you happen to be a midget! As you may know, Hyundai have plans to 'soften' its sedan styling somewhat, from its current 'Marmite' shape. The sooner the better.
@NSNBPEINFLDTECH
@NSNBPEINFLDTECH Год назад
The VW DCTs and this are very different. VW most often uses wet clutch packs and they only briefly made a hybrid. This is more efficient and shifts smoother than a torque converter auto, especially with the electric motor doing the take off, so no clutch slipping.

This is a dual DRY clutch, so no clutch packs. It works even more similarly to a manual than wet clutch DCTs do. The clutches wear in about the same amount of time as a manual. Similarly, it also depends on how you drive it. Dry clutch transmissions aren't great in a non hybrid as they can over heat and wear out if you do a lot of slow driving and stop and go. This is very different as it doesn't slip the clutch in these scenarios

My "less aerodynamic" Corolla consistently gets 15-20% better MPGs on the same route. Toyota's hybrid system is much simpler to operate. When driving the Ioniq through a mountainous terrain, I would constantly worry about the hybrid battery getting depleted. On the other hand, the battery management system on the Toyota's hybrid will never allow the hybrid battery to get depleted, which makes for more relaxing drives.

@@tim3172 What I worried about is a sudden reduction of power. Have you never experienced that? One time, the battery was completely depleted mid-climb and the car was no longer able to maintain its speed. I had to slow down, downshift, and rev the engine at about 5,000+ rpm for quite a bit until I crested the peak. So no, it is not "absolutely nothing". The commenter above you said it well. Driving the Ioniq along a mountainous terrain "takes a bit more intention and thought". Will the battery have enough juice to carry me over the peak? Should I shift to sport mode now and let the battery charge up? With my Toyota hybrid, I simply drive, enjoy the view, and never worry about the hybrid battery's state of charge.

Not Toyota, Honda, etc. too overpriced right now over the MRSP. Any sugestion non plug in just Hyrbid 3rd road seat. Thank you P.s the only thing I see with this Hyundai Hyrbid if it snowing you will be in trouble.

Alex, I have a '23 Elantra hybrid limited... The 1.6L in the Elantra Hybrid is not turbocharged, would fix that on the powertrain review 'page' graphics you had up near the beginning.. The 1.6 in the Tucson Hybrid is turbocharged (I'm guessing) because of the heavier curb weight.
@michaelhughett8396

That is what I thought also. If it were a turbo charged engine, it would have a lot more horsepower than the 138 that is stated for the combined gas and electric motor.

I didn't know these came turbocharged. Seems like that would add complexity and increase the overall cost of the vehicle.

Alex, it's worth noting that the Elantra Hybrid will save you many thousands of dollars in fuel savings over its service life. That can justify the extra cost of the hybrid. Assuming a 6% yearly fuel cost increase - the average over the last 50 years - and 12,000 miles driven per year, in my local area I expect to save $12,000 in fuel savings over the vehicle lifespan, when compared to a non-hybrid Elantra. That makes the Elantra Hybrid the cheapest Elantra available.
@bt5252
@bt5252 Год назад
I was doing back of the envelope calcs and am curious what you used for the lifetime. Also consider the argument of investing what you saved by buying the cheaper non-hybrid.

I kind of disagree. Seems to me that Hyundai/Kia have the best stylists in the industry and they are not afraid to try a different shape from time to time. Save us from the boring BMW stylists whose only idea in years is to come out with a gargantuan grill to cool an electric vehicle!. Lexus has the same problem with giant grills and adds weird style lines and omg the Toyota hatchbacks that look like inflated versions of those tiny cars that race around the track in toy stores.

The Hyundai is a nice car, but nobody beats the Toyota Hybrid system. The Toyota Hybrid System has far fewer moving parts to go bad and maintain, and is the most reliable hybrid system from any manufacturer....
@jzq5917
@jzq5917 9 месяцев назад
I doubt that hybrid is a smart buy, because it may not save money. The reason is the additional cost of buying a hybrid and the battery replacement makes the gas saving not very outstanding. For example the overal fuel economy of a gas and a bybrid vehicle is 6.7l/100km and 4.7l/100km repectively, so the difference is only 2L/100km or saving $3/100km. To buy a hybride elantra in Canada, you need to pay 2500+hst more than a gas one, which would be $2825. $2825/$3/100km=94,166.67km, which means you need to drive 94,166.67km to make the saving on gas equal to the additionl payment of $2825 for getting the hybride one. In other words, for every additional km beyond 94,166.67km, you just start to saving money. However, do not forget the battery do have a life of use, which is approximately 160,000km/100,000 miles. So (160,000km-94,166.67km)*$3/100km= $1,975, this amount is what you would save eventually for your first battery life cycle without caculating the time value or interests cost of the additional $2825. And if keep this car long term, you have to pay for the replacement of the battery which would be at least another $3000 or even much more, and if the replacement cost beyond $2825+$1975=$4800, you would actually lose money for purchasing the bybrid one. How do you guys think?

I saw a video where somebody compared current gas prices and "savings" with the hybrid elantra vs the same trim package on a regular gas engine. The price gap to purchase the hybrid vs base gas engine in the same trim equivalents you would need 9.75 years before you "broke even" at 10k miles per year If you drop it to 5 years it's by almost 20k miles per year.

Having a turbo with a hybrid raises some red flags in terms of long term reliability. But, if you typically keep a car for 10 years or less, the Elantra Hybrid looks like a winner.
