Imagine living in a world where the movie portrayal of Polkadot Man is superior to and more beloved than the movie portrayal of the Joker, and in the same film franchise no less.
DId anyone notice how hard King Shark is trying to impress the rest of the team? He speaks spanish, attempts to read to present himself well, he calls out a bird over the intercom after Flagg asks for updates on their areas, he gets excited about Waller picking him when he see's others raising their hands....amazing King Shark is a Shark
Unironically, Starro's probably one of the most justified and sympathetic monsters the main characters have to fight against in any superhero movie. Dude was literally yanked from where it was happiest, and proceeded to be experimented on and was tortured for 30 years AT LEAST. I'm not saying what it did was right, but its motivation for wanting to kill everyone was very understandable.
@@ktp01 well the way I’ve been thinking about it is that it was basically an animal who was unfamiliar with its surroundings, and therefore acted out when it was uncomfortable.
I thought Peacemaker was just using any excuse to kill anyone. He says "I have eyes on a target in the building" and it's just some innocent woman putting files on a desk lol
I think he fully buys into what he says. His clear unhappiness at having to kill Flag (from his view) sells this to me. He clearly enjoys the how of killing and feeling justified....but I think he really believes it.
@@Adamdidit Him fighting Flag was important. He knew it was wrong, but his extreme patriotism doesn't let him see his hypocrisy. There are people like him IRL. It's actually kind of refreshing seeing a movie openly exposing the US this hard.
My head canon is that King Shark is actually indestructible, but Amanda Waller just convinced him he had a bomb in his neck, and he is too stupid to notice.
I really enjoyed how the movie was funny but it wasn’t afraid to let the serious moments breathe without ruining them with a joke. Made the funnier moments even funnier
Omg YES!! There was a serious moment in the van between RatCatcher and Bloodsport and I was just waiting for ot to get ruined by some shitty joke. But they sat in the pocket & rode it out. Noice.
@@kaviyandeena5158 Peacemaker is the best character in the whole dceu. He can be so much more if James fleshed him out a bit more. Fortunately, we're getting a spin off all about him. Very excited. John cena is really good as peacemaker as well.
@@immentallyhandicapped2903 exactly what I said. Casting Cena as the peacemaker was a fucking genius plan DC is sitting on a gold mine. If they casted anybody else this movie would've been significantly worse. Everybody was great but Cena just made it a masterpiece.
From my understanding, the Peacemaker show was just something James Gunn was messing around with in quarantine and didn't expect it to actually become anything, but surprise! Ratcatcher 2 should absolutely get a show. I also just realized why Amanda sent Harley & Flag to be part of the cannon fodder team. Harley Quinn had already escaped Waller's grasp once (twice technically) and this could be a form of payback as well as acknowledging that she just can't control Harley like everyone else. As for Flag, it was almost foreshadowing that Waller didn't want someone like Flag potentially getting his hands on the information as he absolutely wouldn't stand for what Waller was doing.
@@IronFerret62 Right I understand the Flag might be a bit of a stretch, but she could also have wanted Team 2 to "rescue" Flag so that she could keep tabs on him. Flag isn't like the rest of team. He doesn't have that bomb. He aligns himself with the resistance over Waller, he might just find those files anyhow and with no Waller or Peacemaker to keep an eye on him who would have stopped him? I genuinely have the theory that Waller KNEW that was the Resistance and wanted Team 2 to cripple it so they'd have to ally themselves with Team 2 in order to get anywhere
@@michaelthatoker7125 But she does label this team as the diversion multiple times. This alludes to the idea that even if she didn't know Blackguard sold them out, she did know survival was unlikely. No one on that team had any useful skills or powers for the actual mission so why pick them other than to create a bunch of noise so that the real team comprised of actual powered individuals & elite assassins (one of which shot Superman & the other would do any dirty work for Waller) could get away without an encounter that absolutely would've killed them as the opening showed? None of Team A followed any real orders and kinda got themselves killed. I mean Mongal jumped onto a helicopter which got herself, several goons, & Boomerang killed. Javelin & TDK kinda just stood out in the open. The plan was they were a disposable distraction
@@michaelthatoker7125 She definitely knew dude. That's why there was a second team. Waller knows almost everything and everyone, it's kind of her superpower. Heck, there probably was never an actual "deal" made between BlackGuard and the government, just Waller in the middle playing both sides for the other.
I loved it. Hate that Gunn made me like Rick Flag and then killed him, definitely needs a robot heart and Polkadot Man needs to come back from another dimension or something
Polkadot Man said he has surviving siblings with the same superpower. He just wasnt able to fix his trauma and accidentally killed people thinking it's his mother. I think his power is pretty cool and very superhero-y, he just have a dumb name.
I knew Rick Flagg's fate the moment it was revealed Katana was not there in the movie to have his back. Still, this is the best DC movie and the competition's not even close.
I really think John Cena did a great job playing the character, i admit i havent seen him in a lot of movies, but this is the first time i saw the character and not just John Cena. I just wanted to appreciate that for a second
There were a few moments in this film where the camera just pulled back and gave you 5 seconds to catch your breath before it went right back into being crazy, and I really appreciated it. The pacing was definitely ::chefs kiss:: and it made the movie.
I don't think Harely is actually hallucinating during fights, it's just the movie conveying they way she feels about violence, and allowing the audience to better inhabit her warped head space.
Honestly I think it's one of the best comic book movies just based on how much it actually felt like one. I love the mcu but most of them are just "What if comic books were slightly more realistic?" This perfectly balanced the crazy weird stuff while still being emotional at parts
yea i think the best comic book movies are the ones that are the most fun and visually stunning. not that there cant be good, dark and serious comic book films but i prefer the more lighthearted ones
Yeah I'd say Zack snyders justice league and this is the most DC movies dc has ever made.. Stopped caring about realism and just dived head first into the cannon... New gods? Check Apocalypse check , comic accurate darkseid and steppenwolf check, lanterns, gods and wizards check, space starfish check, walking weasel check.. If Warner could just get off their high horse and let Snyder bring Affleck and cavill back into the fold we will have the dc movie universe we always wanted
@@mullaoslo totally agree with being the most accurate to dc but warner's decisions about the future vision for this universe, I beg to differ about that. As much as it saddens me to see Henry and Affleck go - the time of those portrayals seems to be over regardless, they belonged to Snyder and I cant see any other filmmaker knowing how to use them in that same way (Josh Whedon proved that sufficently). Flashpoint is an option to revamp the universe whilst paying tribute to what has already been made. I think bring back the cast of justice league mortal, let Snyder be a visual director for the films but not a story director. Making the revamp with the same structure as the animated series of movies starting with justice league mortal which gives us an introduction to all these characters briefly and effectively enough that a whole solo movie is unnecessary (or just bring in some of the same actors of characters but theyre different appearances as its only a variation of the universe that way Gal and Jason can stay as WW and aqua). Then suicide squad 3 (the second one could've easily pulled off being in any universe so continuing it isn't a problem) and teen titans where they can take on a huge villain like death stroke, three teams in one phase, why not even throw legion of doom in there too. Instead of doing character by character solo movies DC make their defining trait TEAMS, then theyre not particular competing with marvel because its not their defining trait. I personally think make team movies, they have so many in DC that making solo movies just seems a waste. Instead of a flash movie make a rogues team movie. Instead of a batman movie make a Arkhum Asylum inmates team movie. Watching the same character's done over and over is repetitive but when the focus is on the impact of the team less focus is on batman and more so the villains, ev even if batman or flash get more screen time they make it more about the challenge they face then the character we're so familiar with. There's so many team's DC can use to get themselves a leap ahead of marvel, the society, lantern corps, secret six, Gotham knights, league of assassins, court of owls, birds of prey (with the actual characters this time), sienstro corps. Solo movies are repetitive and when you have so many team options you have to use them. THIS is what will make DC superior by a long shot, not bringing back old directors and actors that did well, no, let that die, burn it if you have to, create a new age of DC, use THE TEAMS. Creativity is key, but reboot's will dig DC's grave deeper and deeper
@@mullaoslo its a long read im so sorry, got ahead of myself but please read it. to cut it short I explained what dc could do in the future instead of what you suggested because as much as reboot's are annoying DC need a fresh slate in terms of those two actors and snyder. Keep some of the old but start a new structure. Would love it if you could read the big comment ahaha
I honestly loved it, but I would have preferred it if they could have not killed Corn of Goblin so quickly. His chemistry with John Krasinsky was so good that I wanted to see much more of them
The motivation of Starro is that he was abducted whilst floating through space (where he said he would have been happy) and has been abused by humans, so is essentially taking revenge out on the humans around him
I think one thing this movie nails that the first was doing a bad imitation of was style. It was so clear that the first one was just edited like a trailer would be, and all of the pretty colors and licensed music were not only completely out of place and extremely jarring, but used less and less as the movie went on. In this one you really can really feel that Gunn had a particular stylistic vision that he was able to apply consistently throughout the whole movie (i.e. the use of title cards, zooms), and it honestly makes the movie such a better experience. It feels like this is what Warner thought they were getting with the first one when the sent it off to be butchered by that trailer house.
I love in the beginning how it’s subtly told from Savants point of view, the way we see the Squad is how he sees them, while the rest of the movie the jokes are great, the jokes between the squad doesn’t always land which makes sense cause Savant probably finds the rest of the team just annoying
My theory is that when blackguard sells out the squad he was told to by Amanda Waller as this would allow the B team to get in without a problem and that’s why blackguard wasn’t worried about the explosive in his head going off. Also if they want to bring Rick flag back just dip him in the Lazarus pit
Corto Maltese is a South American island in the DC universes, introduced in Dark Knight Returns. I mostly remember it from the '89 Batman movie. Vickie Vale made her name by photographing a rebel uprising there.
Yeah I definitely didn't believe it was a real place. Not at all. I mean I would have to be one huge dumbass to be so certain that a fictional place is a real location on this planet.
I liked that Starro seemed like he was going to be satisfied with one city. That he didn’t have big ambitions and would have been happy just staring at the stars.
i think the people they got in for the distraction team gave really good performances with a lot of neat little details and dialogue to sort of trick you into thinking that they were going to be the main team. the scene in the helicopter at the start of the mission was really fun
@@kyledonohue927 I had to pause the movie because I was having fits of laughter. I even said back to the screen "Is this a dog?" in disbelief. That whole scene was just priceless. "All names are letters, dickhead" was an especially nice touch.

Not even gonna lie the fact that the dude literally said "fucking Yankees" made the whole movie for me American government should definitely be the bad guy in suicide squad story maybe not the bad guy they take down
Waller often IS the bad guy in her own way. Doing what she feels she must but often running afoul of the heroes and thus becoming the bad guy (because its comics and the name on the cover is the person that will win).
This movie made me HATE Waller. I'm glad they made a mainstream movie like this themed around the US meddling in South American countries. It's real but people in Hollywood are so squeamish talking about it
@@fireemblemaddict128 Waller has never been a likeable character as far as I know. In all the animated movies she's in, she's usually a threat to everyone on both sides.
John cena as peacemaker was so cool because he is a real pro athlete. His action scenes looked real because he's actually doing his own stunts cuz he trained most of his life for that. And his acting is perfectly fine for the role. Perfect casting.
Me and my brother were talking about how we're actually super happy that he's finally been casted well and had a really good role. I think it fit him super well. On top of everything you said, he honestly had some great comedic timing.
Wrestlers almost always transition really well to these kinds of roles both because they can do their own stunt work but they make the action look great and believable because that’s exactly what wrestling is about. Even just looking like they’re truly caught in a struggle with someone is almost always better than just a run of the mill actor
Yes. In terms of story, actual characters and just being a coherent movie, Suicide Squad is the the best DC movie to me. Suicide Squad and Shazam shows me that DC needs to chill with the big names and give us a Booster Gold and Blue Beetle movie or Guy Gardner Green Lantern. Something the audience and the film makers can have fun with. Shelf the Justice League and give us Justice League International.
I totally agree, DC has a bad habit of putting all their eggs in the Batman/Superman basket. But those characters are so popular and well established that they’re often too afraid to take risks and do anything interesting with them. They need to do more of this, take a director with an interesting perspective and give them a character or team that they can do interesting things with

Agree with everything but the Rick Flag part. I was truly saddened he went out. He was a good leader and had a good heart. And a good fighter but his demise was his good heart preventing him from being thorough, unlike Peacemaker.
I would've never imagined Cena and Elba playing so well off of each other, but they did. They were like the more fucked up version of Legolas and Gimli
The kill contest made me love this movie. Cena and Elba played really well off each other. The way he chopped up the sleeping guy without breaking stride broke my brain. The only thing that wouldve made it better is if he kicked the leg out from the bed at the end

Starro's motivation is straight revenge. By what it says and what we see when Thinker brings, it clearly being abused and tortured for 30 years. Why wouldn't you wreck havoc on the people that subjected you to that.
I think the first one poisoned the well honestly. Its not out of line for me to imagine a pandemic free release where the first SS made more money and won more oscars while the better second movie was a flop.
It’s easily the best DCEU movie and it’s not even close. Props to DC too. They’ve been so much better off focusing on making quality films instead of trying to set up a universe and tie everything together.
Objectively it probably is but i adore the snyder films, i would have to give it to the snyder cut just for the sake that it exists. Though this movie is amazing and i suprisingly liked it more than guardians of the galaxy which is no small feat.
Peter Capaldi was great casting for the Thinker, but he literally does no thinking the entire movie. He just walks into a bar, they essentially kidnap him, and then just leave him some random place while they try and get Harley, and then he just walks them to his lab. Like what was the point of him being in the movie? I thought he was going into the bar on purpose because he can see every outcome and it was part of some plan. Nope. He just goes there to get captured. As much as I liked the casting, the character didn't feel justified to be in the movie due to the lack of writing what his character could do. He could have been swapped out for any random scientist/lab dude. Almost like he was written as "and we have a scientist experimenting on Starro the Squad needs to capture. Oh, shit. Do you know is smart? The Thinker! He could be like a scientist dude. Good job, me. That's a good reference to a comic character." And then he didn't bother to actually write any Thinker actions. Such a waste.
But isnt that one of the main things of this movie? Everyone deems themself to "know" the only truth and to be of higher intelligence, then the average public, wich gives them the rights to do all these gruesome things. And then on the other side we have charackters like the Shark whom in the end turns out to have a higher drive for trying to do the intelligent and right thing (like actually asking is that "food" and is it ok if I eat it ... it's dead but it looks like something I still should not do). So in the end yeah he was just a regular Science dude whom seemed to think higher of his Intelligence, then it actually was. Also all these experiments dont really make him seems to be of high Intelligence ... more of a morbid general Interest)
"The Thick Of It" and "In the Loop" are both incredible. Capaldi is the heart of it, but everyone around him is also amazing. Anything that Armando Ianucci has had a hand in is awesome.

I think it's because starro was classified and by the time he was actually broadcasted through media they already killed them..... So even though justice league would have seen and were on there way to the island, starro was already dead.....
Superman I would guess was still recovering in the ICU. Batman I guess has notified the rest to let Waller's task force finish before taking any action.
Only just realized that Bloodsport is featured on this control panel with the Team A that initially fails. Kinda a nice detail that something else (aka Team B being in the field) is going on

That theory is dumb. The Forbes writer who did it left out so many factors from their thesis. The fact that they literally use films from the early 00s as proof when we are in the middle of a pandemic is funny enough, but the film has also been released on another format; a home format, is R rated, and (to Scorsese’s point) looks too different to what could be accessible “content” for audiences (thanks Marvel.) Contrary to what people think, general audiences still really like the first film despite what Warner did to it. It was a Netflix hit when it launched a few weeks ago, for example.

Short answer: probably yes. The only other film with such a singular artistic vision is probably the Snyder Cut, and this does not suffer from a wackadoodle plot nor poor editing choices.
Main reason the film isn’t as successful as it should be: Delta variant - the delta wave has people staying indoors an in some states closing theatre’s again First suicide squad: small group of people who did not like the first suicide squad will not give the series another chance HBO Max: the previous 2 reasons gives all those people an incentive to watch it in the comfort of their homes not spending anymore of their money on the movie

I've been a life long dc fan but you have to understand most people get bored watching 2+ hours of gore and jokes. The film also has pacing issues. Also, suicide squad in general isn't very interesting. I've never been into it because it's the same skeleton plot every time. I saw this movie in cinemas and it is truly a visually breath taking masterpiece. I feel that it is the far superior film but more importantly the best DC film since Watchmen in 2009. James Gunn's direction really showcases how a creative mind can make a film with a simple concept exceed all expectations due to the previous film leaving it with a stigma. Hopefully they find a way to negotiate a way for him to direct a sequel as I feel very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy if you put it in someone else's hands it's not going to live up to fan expectation and may lack that critical element Gunn brings to his work.

I think Starro was just upset. I mean being experimented on for 30 years and being held captive probably did a number on him so he just wanted revenge. Instead of a peace maker show, they should have ordered an Agents of A.R.G.U.S. show with a young Rick Flag being recruited by Waller after the battle of Metropolis
I have a theory: The peacemaker TV show will be about peacemaker forming his own team like the suicide squad and there will be another suicide squad movie about peacemaker at his team being sent after bloodsports team. Maybe call it "kill the suicide squad". 🤔
that donnie darko bit is one of the funniest mr sunday movies moments ever. i first saw the animated version of that bit and didn't realise it was from this review. so good.
