When Tesla entered the Malaysian market, it disrupted the EV industry with its sub-RM200,000 starting price. Suddenly, all other EVs on the market look overpriced. Less than a year later, we now have the BYD Seal which offers even more performance at an even lower price. The BYD Seal Performance is also Malaysia's cheapest car to offer more than 500hp and it can get from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.
In this episode of Let's Talk About, Amin and Alex will discuss the BYD Seal, its pros and cons, and how it stacks up against the Tesla Model 3.

I own a BYD Seal vehicle, and I thoroughly enjoy driving it. The experience is remarkable. Interestingly, my wife, who owns a Tesla, actually favors my BYD due to its instrument layout. Unlike Tesla, where controls are solely on the monitor, the BYD's interface is more intuitive. Consequently, we are contemplating selling our Tesla 3 this year to acquire an electric vehicle with a broader range of features, akin to the BYD model. The transition to a vehicle lacking physical controls has indeed posed challenges for us.

Well said. Car should be designed for our convenience and not the other way round that we, the owner need to adapt to the car. Felt funny that some people got confused who the master is.

LFP blade battery is worth mentioning, this is one of the strongest factors of buying the Seal. China brand? I say, why not we try it then only give our fair comments?

Tesla owners are clueless lots. Most are not aware of what they are getting into. Like recently many owners got up to a surprise. Suddenly their car is capable of adaptive high beam where individual pixels in the headlamps are turn on and off during high beam operation ... all while they were sleeping. That kind of wizardly Audi is fame for, Tesla just nonchalantly enables it with it's inconspicuous matrix headlamps😅.

I am driving Tesla 3 Highland LR. Here are some of my inputs: Advantages of Seal compare to Model 3: 1. It has bigger space, like Camry size inside. 2. Got more buttons and signal stalks and gear knob, something I would definitely prefer to have than without. 3. The seat is actually more body wrapping. 4. 360 parking camera! Tesla 3 has 360 "estimated" parking camera. 5. Android auto and apple car play available. 6. The 1 piece big moon roof I think it is going to be useful later to install retractable sunshade. 7. Front digital screen. But I also installed the same via 3rd party. Advantages of Model 3 1. Remote start engine, from anywhere as long as got signal. I was told later BYD Seal also has it. 2. One pedal drive. It is quite pleasurable when it is combined with good Regen when you release the accelerator. 3. Easy car entry and exit, no need physical keys if you pair your car with your phone via Bluetooth. 4. Longer WLTP range. 5. Faster daily charging 11 kwh AC vs 7 kwh Seal. I think this one might make quite a difference. 6. Exclusive Tesla charging network. Which I think only useful when you don't have home charger. 7. Back screen is available for kids to watch, Netflix, RU-vid etc. it comes to me as a surprise my kid loves it. 8. Colder air con, I am not entirely sure about it but when I test driven Seal and Atto 3, both temperature set to lowest, but still not cold. 9. The built in Tesla map is quite good because it also shows you how much battery % left when you reach destination. Also I actually like Tesla navigation better, like sometimes when waze/Google map they can't pinpoint which exit you should take if they are close to each other. Tesla map can tell the difference. 10. No need to service car. Only need to change air filter when it is due, brake pad, tyres. 11. There is absolutely no delay in touching the screen. For this, I feel like iPad Pro interface vs BYD Android Tablet interface. 12. Easy entry. Like the steering wheel will move up and seat will move backways when you are parked (you can set it however you want). And move to your desired position when you switch to drive. There are many things I could not comment unless I am owner of both cars. Like cruise control, cabin quietness, handling and suspension, and everyday stuff like ease of connecting it to your phone etc.

BYD is car like other ICE or traditional car in term of interior. Model 3 is private ,tidy moving room. In Tesla, owner will have game controller to play game. Even though don’t have car play but there have RU-vid , Netflix ,etc to watch. If you like to sing, there have Caraoke to sing. It also CCTV surrounding , called sentry mode. When going TT with friend, they can have light show. And the owner paid for their vehicle also inclusively charging network in package. Gentari, Jomcharge, ChargEV doing good job here, Tesla serve their own owner too and what about BYD did for their owner?

People who love tesla don't love tesla because of silly things like no stalks/gear selector. It is because the engineering behind it. For example, the octovalve heatpump is a very powerful device. It's not only useful in winter, it also powerful enough to enable the car to be charge fast while simultaneously run aircon which very useful for malaysian whether. Most EV struggles to do that(when you use aircond when charging, the charging speed will throttle because the battery heats up due cooling redirect to aircon). I admit the drawbacks of the cost cutting measure, but you can't deny the good engineering of tesla. For me I can take the lack of signal stalk, but the swipe/touch gear selector is annoying. There's also other stuff like sentry mode, dog mode, camp mode,integrated route planning etc. Tesla is still ahead in that aspect.

@JianYZhong 4 месяца назад
I actually appreciate it that Tesla “cost cuts” on items that I can adapt to easily, and adds value on the double glazed glass (less noise) and smoother suspension which I actually value. So this “cost cutting” is not an issue for me. In fact, I quite like the minimalism. Especially if it means less scope for problems and maintenance.

Thanks, many good points. But one reason to prefer the Model 3 (RWD) over the Seal is efficiency (miles/kwH). Model 3 is lighter than Seal. It’s something to consider especially if we care about our environmental footprint. I agree the Seal looks good (but Model 3 also looks fine), and the interior feels premium (whereas the Model 3 feels minimalist). But I wouldn’t like its “aggressive” ADS; whereas I feel the lack of stalks in Model 3 is something I can adjust to fairly quickly, I feel the BYD’s ADS will annoy me all the time. That said I do like the Seal and look forward to seeing it on Malaysian roads (while driving my “common” Model 3 😂)

@@iantelinside it is very strange to me that some people will buy Tesla just because the UI or the software seems to be better. I buy car to drive and not to play with the screen and the software can be updated rather easily (some OTA) whereas the hardware is something that you can't change that easily. I buy car that I feel is better in built quality. Software, sorry I don't mind so much. Some people said Tesla UI is so much better and BYD Seal UI seems like that of a decade ago. I don't even mind the current car that I drive as of today, which is Toyota Camry Hybrid that come with UI of 3 decades ago.
@iantelinside
@iantelinside 4 месяца назад
@@boonchewchan8245 I know what you mean. However, for many people, a good and well functioning cruise control is very important for reduced driver fatigue for long journeys. And entertainment options in the car while waiting for charging during long journeys, or for passengers while on the move, is also something many customers are putting priority on. Not to forget safety systems that work when they should and don't bother you unnecessarily. These require many software updates and refinements. I think Tesla by removing hardware such as forward radar and ultrasonic sensors, is handicapping itself actually, because they have placed all their bets on Tesla Vision (i.e. using the cameras for the autopilot function). In that sense, I think if BYD really offers continued development of their software, they could have better intelligent cruise control, safety features etc than Tesla. I read that BYD is now investing billions into reaching autonomous driving capabilities with their cars but I suspect that may not reach current models, probably only future ones.

The BYD seal interior cosmetics looks nicer than Tesla and its slightly cheaper in price - but thats about it. The gutz and tech and software of a Tesla is vastly superior. Without the one pedal driving it doesn't even feel like an EV for me. 7kw ac charging will be ok for most people who aren't travelling to penang every other day. Visibility in the Seal doesn't feel as good as the tesla 3. Also the instrument cluster at the steering wheel feels cheap. China selling the seal at RM130k and in malaysia for RM180k feels like a bad deal to me. Tesla is not an EV company. Its price has nothing to do with the lack of shifters or buttons. Btw, not one OEM will have a shifter or buttons after ICE cars are banded from selling. You may like Apple Car Play. However, Tesla's software is clearly better integrated as a total package. For example, Tesla will automatically calculate charging times to your route. Tesla's charging is just easier too. The Tesla M3 you bought today will be better in 4 years because of OTA updates. A lot of companies do OTAs. But, Teslas have been known to drive better, get better range, and go faster with updates. You and only you will have the opportunity to buy or rent Full Self Driving. If you think it will never come, look at the hundreds of videos of FSD doing what BYD or any OEM can only dream of. A car that doesn't have FSD will be like owning a Nokia in the Iphone era. If prices were equal and you didn't grow up with a keyboard on your phone, I think you would have chosen a Tesla. I like the Chinese EV companies. They allow more people to switch to EVs. Without BYD, the ICE OEMs would not take EVs seriously. Tesla makes the best selling car in the world for a reason.
