I know this. The R5C is one of the sweetest cameras (rigged up of course) I’ve EVER shot on…EVER. I currently use it as a live handheld broadcast camera. Awesome images and internal stability.
Yep, I believe the downsampling from full 8K readout is only up to 30p on the R5 II. Big miss for me. Really great internal recording is 4K 60p in XF-AVC All-I on the R5C … plus all the ProRes RAW options out to a Ninja V+ .. and super 35 mode. Keeping the R5C.
I have an R5C and until today I wanted a R5 Mark ii. Any risk of overheating is a huge pass. The only thing I might be interested in is the 4K SRAW codec. But other than that it’s a pass for me. The new battery is a huge interest for me. The fact that the new LPE6P allows for 8k60 without an external PD is very interesting. Currently canon sales doesn’t have the manuals yet so they can’t say if it’ll allow the same in the R5C but if it does that’ll be a huge upgrade for all R5C owners simply by getting the battery alone.
We run a couple of cs and 3 standard R5s; the cs were fine on an 8 hour operating theatre shoot, the R5s overheated dozens of times and became a complete distraction. Totally agree with your sentiment; overheating risk is intolerable. Would be interested to see if the Tilta cooler works on the mark II?
@@DrRussell that’s usually the case in controlled environments lol Try at a sporting event, car event mid day, shooting promos for restaurants in the kitchen when it’s all about the food. R5’s are R6 1 and 2 all had this issue and wouldn’t last even with external cooling systems like those from tilta
If I heard correct, the lpe6p battery has the same dimensions as the old one, so the old battery will fit in the mark 2. So and it is a big SO, the new should fit in the old. I have asked my local canon dealer to check and confirm.
Although it’s a new battery that can do the internal 8K 60p Raw … it’s still a small battery and in that format it will burn through them quickly. You’ll likely still need an external PD power source.
One other thing to remember is the Canon R5 II hasn't got the extra function buttons on the camera or the cinema settings layout so its really a no brainer. Canon R5C is the best camera around at the moment in the Canon range.
I will definitely be keeping my Canon R5C. Still on the fence about whether or not the R52 is enough for me, or whether I should just upgrade to a C400. Have a great day
@@bryanredding If Canon made the C400 8K even in 24/30p then I believe they would have had a hit on their hands but for some silly reason they made it only 6K.
@@stewartmoore It might have to do with generally, for a given technology, the larger the pixel pitch, the lower the noise and the better low-light performance. 6K for 35mm is about 25% larger in each dimension that 8K (for just a smidge over 50% larger area per pixel).
R5C does have dual native ISO, 800 and 3200 in CLog. In my opinion the R5C does rival the FX3 as a sharper, more powerful camera while the FX3 has much better battery life and a much more video-focused layout. The R5C has the most strengths as a hybrid with the power of the R5 while still having most of the features found in a cinema camera like the C70. Both are great hybrid choices from their respective brands
@@brian.rafferty while it doesn’t have a dual native iso Vistek did a video showing the noise at 6400 iso was nearly the same at 800 iso so I’m not sure if it really is that big of an omission.
@@muriloyamanaka Agreed, the only things holding back the R5C right now are its lack of cLog2 and poor battery life, which may improve with the new batteries.
For my daily use case, real estate, the R5C makes more sense. It oversamples 4K60p with full AF tracking, doesn't overheat, and since it has a pinned sensor there's no chance of an inadvertent "wide angle wobble." Add to that, as an interview camera, R5C's "face-only" AF is brilliant. R52 may indeed be a better hybrid, especially since the sensor is now stacked and it has the CLOG2 profile, but most of those other things I mentioned, which are very important to me, it doesn't have. That dynamic range had better walk on water for me to even consider replacing my R5Cs with R52s. We'll see. It's like Canon swung the cripple hammer JUST hard enough to still give relevance to R5C and to make room for a future R5C mkii. The whole fan grip thing is the silliest part of that IMO...just put a fkin fan in the thing. R5C's fan works great, and as someone who has done a fair bit of side-by-side shooting with R5C and OG R5, you really don't notice any difference in the body from the fan extension. If anything, it better keeps your nose from hitting the back screen.
The R5C doesn’t overheat and doesn’t have a time record limit. Those are way more important differences for professional video than some of the ones you mention. Definitely not an R5C killer.
This. I'd rather have a camera with inferior dynamic range and inferior AF than one which will periodically just shut down entirely for whatever reason.
Canon say the new and more powerful P-battery will be backwards compatible via firmware updates. Would love to see a test when it is ready for the R5C, if it actually increases the batteri life over the lpe6nh. Thank you for much useful content on the R5C.
I agree, I’m curious to see if the power delivery from the new batteries helps at all with the R5C, especially since they’ve been stated to have the same capacity as the older battery. I’m inclined to think that it will help, especially because the current batteries are still able to supply power to the photo OS after they’re used by the video OS, implying it’s more of an output problem than it is a capacity problem.
I mean on paper it certainly looks a lot better - full size HDMI, clog2, addition of 4k sraw, ibis, better dynamic range, better battery life and better photography features. Only advantage the r5c has is the video os and a sharper 4k 60 with no overheating. If you look at canon’s numbers only the 8k raw and 4k 120 modes are prone to overheating on the r5 II. You’re unlikely to be shooting non stop 8k raw and 4k 120 anyway so it’s really a non issue for most people. If you want to keep a light and powerful setup without rigging the r5 II is better than the r5c.
The R5 mkii does not do oversampled 4k/60p it's subsampled. I have to think they will fix this in a firmware update though. I can't imagine the sensor/system are not capable of it. It must have been some sort of marketing thing not to include it. So upon release, if you like to shoot 4k/60p, the Mk II is a bit of a disappointment. But the R5c does oversampled 4k/60p as does the R3 so I have to think this new camera will as well, eventually.
I have loved my R5C and won’t be upgrading for a while. I have a small rig L bracket and Fxlion battery. Super simple and I’d prefer this over a vertical battery grip. I enjoy cinema OS and haven’t the two systems in one. I don’t shoot crazy fast moving subjects mainly my kids on vacation and some travel stuff. The photos it takes are phenomenal and aren’t different. I enjoy the waveforms and false color on the C. Yes they are close but to take a loss on selling it and then spending more money to buy an r5ii. Doesn’t make sense. If you had an r5 and upgraded to the Ii the. Yeah maybe. I just WISH for heck sake we could get Clog2 in the r5c. That’s literally lol I want and face AF in 4k120p on the r5c.
I feel gutted because I just switched to the R5C after using the R5 for over 3 years and despite the amount of reviews and videos I watched on it prior to switching, I didn’t seem to catch that it didn’t do AF tracking in 4K 120, which I use a lot and is definitely the biggest feature I miss from the R5. And to see this come out just a couple of months after making the switch, it’s a kick in the teeth. I’m just hoping that the R5 II cannot match the dynamic range of the R5C as that was the main motivating factor for me to make the switch. Along with them giving the R5II CLog 2 , it’s just painful.
I was ready to preorder two mark 2s this morning. The lack of dual native iso made me close my browser and stick with my two r5s and my c70. They were touting “16 stops of dr” but I genuinely don’t believe it’ll be more than 12. I’ll wait for Gerald Undone to give me an unbiased review of the specs before I even think about it.
But can we plug in a constant power dummy battery in the R5ii and get all the video features. Or, are they shut off if we don't use the special new batteries?
Could be … but that small battery will last about 15mins in that format. I don’t think they are much higher capacity, they are just able to output more wattage.
Yupp and they definitely know the problem is there since they sell the fucking 600€ cooling grip lmaoooo... And obviously the grip wont work with old batteries so 6 new batteries would total at almost 800€
You speculated on whether the R5C's lack of tracking a ove 60fps is a CinemaEOS limitation.. it's not bc the C70 can track at 120fps. I personally don't understand why the R5C can't do this, bc from having both cameras, it seems to me that the R5C has a better processor, so should be able to handle this,but for whatever reason we don't have it. Maybe a power issue?
I disagree on the RAW being a tie - I own the R5C and I'm trading it for the R5ii for this very reason, that you can do 4k in RAW. This is a game changer for the smaller file sizes, the R5C doesn't do this, you can only get 6k but it's super 35 only.
I’m interested to understand more about the R5ii’s 4K Raw - from what I understand about RAW works in video, I understand it to be a direct (mostly or almost completely unprocessed) readout from the sensor. For the R5ii to do 4K in RAW off an 8k sensor, it’s seems like it’ll only be reading out from part of the sensor or something else to somehow achieve this - so interested to see if it means it’s cropped or how what’s going on here?

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I'm primarily photo drive HOWEVER video demans are calling me and the R5C is at the top of my list due to 45MP AND all the Cinema OS capabilities. The dual native ISO and lack thereof for the R5II is a minus for me.
No wifi or bluetooth in video mode. 8k was no good for my work flow. Never had a project besides a few weddings to use such a cinema camera on. Back to doing normal family stuff in 4k@DrRussell
The R5mk2 gets a new battery which is the same size and shape but can put out more amperage. I wonder if the R5C could be updated via firmware to accept that battery. That would be nice to be able to get more video formats while still using the internal battery.
I’m a R3 owner looking for better low light performance and smaller size. I thought the r5 mkii could be that camera. But it seems I will need to upgrade to the R1, right?

I haven't read the comments but I'm sure you've been put right on a very important mistake in this video. vThe 4K 60 is not oversampled but subsampled. Pretty essential point to get clear and for $k shooting no improvement from the R5 in this respect.

does the new battery for the R5 Mark II work with the R5C? If so, does it unlock some of the higher functions cuurenly locked out when in internal battery mode only?

The new battery from the R5MKII will have more power. I wonder if the R5C will be able to work in 8K-RAW 60fps also with this battery without an external powerbank.
For me I love cinema camera because of vivid photo I get and can made become I love blackmagic camera and R5C both but both I prefer in cinema camera the best of it software editing which is best in all I love blackmagic camera because it only for me I see the difference in overheating they don't overheating.
What I don't understand is why Canon would not just release an update to the R5C instead of a subpar duplication? Does this mean a substantive update to the R5C is coming soon? Otherwise, this makes little sense.

There’s no dual base ISO, there’s risk of overheating unless you add a bulky battery grip, the codecs are still better in the R5C. If you shoot raw you still get clog2, unlimited record time, and the list goes on. And for the price especially now that these new cameras came out? Unbeatable
@deafdirector on Josh Sattins page he pulled up the official canon specs and the R5ii only does line skipped 4k60, not over sample and that model still over heats after 40 minutes. Smh
I don't shoot a lot of videos, but when I shoot, I usually shoot in 8K-RAW 60fps. The R5ii is reported to overheat in this case after 18 minutes, and with the ventilated BG after 21 minutes. If this is true, then I'll quit my R5ii order.
that is the main reason why it cannot be oversampled, but only skipping lines, exclusively due to overheating and not due to their whim or some third reason

R52 has the most important thing and that is higher dr. The thing i dislike the most of r5 is the worse dr then other cameras. For me thats one of the most important things in run and Gun situations.
Dynamic Range is huge. Supposedly the R52 has 16 stops, but I remain skeptical til I can get one in my hands. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
The term “killer”, to me, means “is it going to kill new sales” and I believe that Canon probably will not produce another R5C once the R5 Mk 2 is out. Indeed, it may have already stopped production. What you address in this video are valid points and questions but, I guess my point is, the title of your video is a bit off. Yes… R5 II will kill the R5C. Will I sell mine? No. I like it. It still has uses. It is still a productive tool. I’ve already preordered the R5 II (and the R1) but those will be used for different jobs.
IMHO: I'm Very Sorry, but NO because of Fan Grip + Video Features of R5 II - in this case potential R5C II practically has No Sense... ..only if Much Better - for Much Bigger Cash of course ;)
@@toalpap9182 can expect built in fan, better codecs with built in clog 2 in all modes, same BSI stacked sensor but with dual native ISO (something canon hasent even commented on the r5ii), possibly even triple native like the C400 who knows, faster readout speeds eliminating rolling shutter, SRAW of course for those who don’t want full 8k but want raw capability, increased dynamic range, possibly dual cfexpress type b, better battery life, I wouldn’t even knock the possibility of higher quality 8K oversampled from 8.6 or 9K. Better auto focus to include things like vehicles, animals, etc instead of just talking faces. The possibilities are endless. R5C is a video focused hybrid with a cinema menu and it makes sense to keep the line going since it competes with the fx3 and latest Z cameras from Nikon.

R5 -> R5C was +$600 => +$700 at MkII will be sober estimate - hopefully :) ...but I won't be surprised if More - if will be Boosted Nicely :)) ....although they certainly won't overdo it so not to cannibalize the C400 :o) .....R5 was announced 07/20, R5C 01/22 => within 2y we will see - perhaps ......R5 II is the BEST HYBRID right now for still Somewhat Reasonable Money :) 1st Canon CSC which I WANT REALLY!

Correct your video r5 mark II does oversampled 4k fine max up to 30fps, above is line skipped. Confirmed by CVP and PRO AV TV ! R1 does 4k 60fps fine ! R6 mark ii does 4k 60fps fine but not r5 mark ii. Everyone is in a hurry making videos and information they spread are irrelevant and false big fail unsubscribed!
