I am a member of Antique Caterpillars Machinery Owners Club (ACMOC) . You have a very nice find. Come on over and ask questions on the Forms. There are all kinds of manuals for members. the reason I stopped by was to explain how to shut down the pony motor. DO NOT use the mag switch. The way is to turn off the gas and let the pony motor run out of gas. All the service manuals say it is because of the downdraft carburetor style of the era. The gas in the carburetor float bowl (due to rough riding and excessive vibration) will flow into the pony motor crankcase diluting the oil causing the pony motor to seize. The Horizontal 10hp pony motor only uses 5/8 qt. so just a little gas can destroy a pony motor in short order. Also if the gas is left on in some cases a full tank of gas can siphon itself into the pony motor crankcase. One time use.😱 Hope to see you on the Forms at ACMOC. Some of us ol' timers sell hard to find parts too. THANKS for the video and your time.
The slogan is that there’s nothing built like a Cat, and truer words were never spoken. All the old girl needs is a little TLC. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you, Edward! It has a frozen steering clutch on one side, which is part of the reason we had to keep resetting to get it on the trailer, and needs the hand clutch adjusted... along with some undercarriage work... and a few other things haha. But we love it! More videos to come!!
Thank you for watching, Vance! It needs a little love, but it runs like a top for sure... we actually didn't eve have to work on the diesel. Hi gh test gas for the pony, bit of point filing and some patience!
Always nice to see an old Cat brought back to life, nothing better than the sound of a Cat diesel with a straight pipe, even the rain cap is still working fine!
Cuando niño acompañaba a mi Padre por las tardes en el buldozer D 6 en Valdivia Chile. Que recuerdos más hermosos. Me sentaba sobre la caja de herramientas.
I think the sound and the smile are about equal haha! Good to hear from you my friend! I've seen your comments a time or two on my videos. Glad you're still enjoying this one. I'll be posting more soon! Have a good night :)
I have a 1958 D6 9U, nice old cat. I built my runway with it. When you were shifting the transmission, if it's grinding, reduce throttle, and push the clutch lever ahead to stop the clutch from spinning. I've used my foot on the lever. Also, shift it fast, and it wont get a chance to start spinning and grinding. Wish I had more work for mine, it's a lot of fun to play with. Jim
Glad you're enjoying it. Yes you are right, I know the pony motor and diesel are separate... My point was that we didn't know if the pony motor was even going to run. Anyway, glad you enjoy the content. Thank you for watching
The easiest way to load a dozer on wet wooden ramps or just steel, is to be in the lowest gear possible at the lowest speed. Also critical is the position of the blade which should be as low to the deck as possible. The blade acts as a counterweight to the ass end of the machine
Ekatjam, you are correct. But at that time, the hand clutch needed adjustment, and the shifter needed to be gone through. We could not get it in the lowest gear at first. Then on our successful run, we were able to shift it in. On top of this, one of the steering clutches was frozen, so it took a couple of tries to line it up properly. AND the tracks need to be tightened, so it had a tendency to walk off to one side. The bulldozer was headed to the scrapper if we didn't get it out of there, so we just did what was absolutely necessary to load it. Thanks for your input!
@@hfdzl That's my dad, the master of all things! I'm the cameraman. I went to Tufts and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Have lots of friends in Mass!
Hahahaha yes! The original seat would have filled the whole width of the spot the current seat sits in, but it looks pretty comfy doesn't it? LOL Thank you! You have a Merry Xmas as well!
The older Cats are tough and where built to last. The operator truely didn't have much exprience. Some of the comments where very right. When I start a Cat I look for the main engine valve float lever. Open the lever and turn over the main engine till oil pressure and fuel pressure are in the green. Then close valve float and start engine. Also if you push the main clutch lever forward if it has been sitting long time I would push it with my foot. It will stop the transmission and let you shift without ruining a gearbox. Great old Cats I learned to operate on a cable blade 9U. Such great memories of my Dad and I skidding logs together.
We're learning. He's a great operator, just never had run a machine with a hand clutch... he actually figured out how to start it without any instruction. AND, one of the steering clutches was frozen. This was a hustled situation to save it from the scrapper. To those posting negative comments, all of you who know your way around the old machines were not born with that knowledge. You had to learn. You had to grind gears and mess up before you got it right. No one in this video got hurt, and the bulldozer ended up on and off the trailer without an issue. The multiple attempts were because it could only turn one way and we had to figure out low gear. Cheers.
You can tell that diesel engine is a good runner it fired right up pretty easy. I think all you'll need to do is adjust the clutch an then it'll go in gear bettter
Thanks for the suggestion, Amos! Yes, I agree... this was a situation where we needed to get it moved or it would have been scrapped, so we just got it running enough to get it on the trailer. But we are looking forward to getting it fine tuned and running like new again!
@@AntiqueCarsRCool from what I've seen, you should find someone who actually knows what they're doing to show you what to do. Looks like you're not very experienced on those older machines.
Caterpillar she is alive from the dead sitting there long time only needs tune up and get that machine running as possible heavy equipment construction work move everything in it's way awesome video friend bless you happy new year 2023
Just fantastic, very much enjoyed your video. Such a good sounding motor too. I’m interested…. Why is it that there is no roll over protection on these type of machines ?
Hi Jason! I’m so glad you enjoyed. Amazing how quiet that diesel engine is once you shut the pony motor off, isn’t it? This machine was built in a time that a ROPS canopy was not a requirement. However, a canopy could be ordered for it. Many operators working in logging or other environments at high risk of falling debris would order a special roof, or build their own. If you look up Cat bulldozer, or any brand in the 50s or prior, you’ll see many that do have a roll cage of sorts. It just wasn’t standard equipment without paying extra. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned buddy!
@@AntiqueCarsRCool thank you for your reply and for the interesting info… I’m learning as much as I can before going to look for something like this for my property. I was expecting that your answer may have been that roll over protection was useless as the weight of the machine would crush it anyway if it went over 🤔 I didn’t think of it being for falling debris.. but yes of course 👍 Thanks again. Ready for the next video 😊
I had the same model Cat. Sold it to an old fellow in Herman Mo. The old bugger begged me to sell kit to him, so I did. He put a down payment on it and stiffed me for the rest! Figures I won't come and get it as it's so hard to transport! He hasn't done anythin g with it as he don't know how to fix it!
This may suggest that maintenance is not necessary, as this machine has been outdoors for a long time and has worked without problems. But the truth is, it just moves. You need to replace the oils, filters and other things.
malhargan you are correct. We just did what was necessary to load it. It was going to be scrapped if we didn't get it moved. So this was a quick bare minimum job, but we intend to go through it and give it some love!
Timberland Pros working on a Caterpillar Dozer = Men at Work. So I'm guessing the later Caterpillars have the joystick type controls? Wondering if Discovery Channels (Parker Schnabel of GOLD RUSH), would know how to control this Cat with all the levers?
Probly ought t o put a little tension on the trax. You need to spin the engine with the pony f or a bit. It warms the intake, as well as provides oil pressure before it lights off. If not, the rod bearings won't last long. Just my 2 cents
That's a nice old dozer when dozers were dozers,he needs to make a cab to cover the seat & make some rops so in case he rolls over on it's side & tree limbs also & he might want to tighten up the tracks bcause they are loose
When you flashed "It's alive", nope. Not yet, that was only the pony (starter) motor which then spins the heavier diesel engine. She's an old girl but, still beautiful.
Parece ser uma ótima idéia recuperar essas máquinas abandonadas, porém em alguns momentos o senhor fica sobre a esteira tentando dar partida, aí é que mora o perigo!
i remember reading a adsack (classifeid ads) paper 15 years ago i reamember seeing an ad for sale 1975 bulldozer for $30,000 WOW those machines must cost ALOT ALOT $ !
Great machine but the crrect way to start it is to KEEP THE THROTTLE SUT until it has run on full compression on the pony motor for a few minute ONLY THEN open the throttle to let fuel into the Diesel
We were just trying to get it out of there at that time. We were paying the trucker and the previous owner wanted it out of there that day or it was off to the scrapper. Thanks for your input though. We're learning as we go.
Yo are right. That's the Squatch253 approved way to do it. Same principle as letting the glow plugs work for twenty or more seconds before hitting the starter
A good worker once the problems are adjusted out of existance. D6 will get a lot of work done quickly. Quite a neat model that particular example with the name proudly displayed on it everywhere. Always drivetrain and very rarely an engine in these earlier builds. Unless it's that petrol motor.
@@AntiqueCarsRCool No shit!? I refer to the pony motor by saying the petrol one therefore. Get it Sherlock? Well if you don't get it try this next statement? I KNOW!
Tin the hand church to stop flywheel Turing round I Have got aD6 B I started out on a D6 9U cable swing blade it a 5 speed manual you can't chain from Ford or back with the main gear in any of those fire gear it got to be in N
Haha yep... the hydraulic oil warmed up after a while so it was easier to shift. A lot of people are being negative about the video, but hey, you learn as you go.
@@vectorm4 Thank you for watching! We don't either... we eventually figured it out, filed the points (with a specific point file) and bled the injectors. Will play with it again soon, and make another video! Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see!
The older cats must have been alot more reliable as most of the newer ones I've run are quite unpredictable and overloaded with finicky electronics ! I've even seen brand a brand new 973 engine blow up during it's second day of use , I'd rather have a komatsu any day especially if I was somewhere where access to parts was a issue like a remote property!
The older cat were alot more reliable than the new ones are today bcause they made America what it is today, you watch a old movie with older construction equipment in it & you'll see why I said what I did
@@justinmcclanahan6036 my uncle tracked a komatsu d31p 90 miles over a mountain range in Alaska in 87 we used it hard for several years and to this day it still functions , needs a new under carriage from wear of course but in all these years only the water pump ever went bad and yes that 973 was made in france
No, not deaf. That was just a joke haha. He moves his hands a lot while talking. Just one of his quirks. He was trying to motion to the trucker is all, and no one could hear over the engine. Thanks for watching!
