I've once met Dieter Doepfer in a very small exhibition in Munich, he explained his rig a bit, showed me a simple patch and then I asked him "Well, if you you look around and see all these modules from you and other companies, all these people having fun, how does it feel, if you realize 'Hey, I am kinda resonsible for this!'?". He was touched, hesitated a bit, smiled and said "Yeah, not bad" :)
Dieter Doepfer invented the Eurorack synthesizer system back in 1996! So in essence we owe Dieter a ton for opening up the ecosystem by open sourcing all the internals of his original A-100 system. And fun fact, he lives and works literally 100 meters from where I live 😀
3u racks were very common, many servers use them. He just came up with the idea of building panels around that size and it ended up being ideal since these racks already existed. I'm more impressed by all the designs doepfer developed.
@@kellymerrill5294 racks for servers accomodate 19“ wide servers and are 42HU high. Doepfers first A-100 system was much wider. In fact the 3HU system with that width comes from electronic lab environments where 3HU components for signal generators and measuring devices were very common. And Dieter came from that trade when he designed the first module for the Formant music synthesizer back in 1977. The formant used 3HU and 6HU modules as well.
Right!? I was pretty excited I had the scoop on Mylar. I'm still surprised this module isn't a lot more popular. I was stoked from the minute it was announced, and everyone else seemed to be sleeping on it. Oh, and I agree with DeathByMedia. The Erica Synch Bassline is also amazing.
I hauled out my A-111-6 recently and realized if I turned VCF cutoff freq all the way down, resonance all the way up, FM2 up to around 3-4, used AD envelope and some other settings that it makes a pretty respectable bass drum sound. With gain it can make a distorted bass drum. adding another filter like the Wasp and modulating the filter with a sequencer or LFO makes some really interesting accents and syncopation.
Love the external input feature. As you demonstrate, it’s perfect for adding zing to the zang. My philosophy entirely. (So it looks like I’m going to have to buy that Plaits after all!) Years ago I discovered the strange beauty of layering different synth techniques together to create massive, exhilarating sounds… I took the awful D-110’s electric bass guitar preset and mixed it with the weedy CZ-101 electric bass guitar preset and the combination of those two different synthesis techniques running alongside and against each other - phase distortion synthesis mixed with linear arithmetic synthesis - both trying to make the same instrument sound - created a MASSIVE Synclavier-type sonic brilliance!!! The phrase “greater than the sum of its parts” doesn’t even begin to describe the vast detailed sonic experience which that combo created. Indeed I’m sorely tempted to acquire those two synths again for that very reason. So yeah… adding a completely different synth voice or oscillator type to your signal path is a godsend isn’t it! Thank you for this timely reminder!
You’re really keeping me right at the moment Mylar. I am listening to your “Why We Bleep” back catalogue whilst I walk the hounds in the morning. And tonight I’m getting a little squishy squelchy bed time story. Cheers dude. I need this.
@@MrNamaikisaru I’m just starting number 8 this morning. I feel like I’m learning a lot. It’s just hard to resist flashing up modular grid on the work laptop!
I have this module and this video helped me get a deeper understanding and love for this awesome little voice. Was considering selling it and getting something else but now I can't and that's a good thing! Thanks and keep making great videos :) Ace
Man you make this look sooo easy. I have most of your modules except for the a-111-6. Cant get close to your beats /tones, point deffo made, about this little gem! It is on the wish list now, thanks to you! Take it easy man, always inspirational!!
Had this as a corner piece of my live rig for a while now, and it is a sweet little mother. As always got a few new ideas from this demo Mr Mylar… great work as always. I find it works best as a lead voice, just something about its sweetness that cuts through and sits nice at the top, prefer other voices for bass.
I'm not too deep into all the old synths stuff, but I literally felt like I remembered all the SH101 presets from that emulation I once had. Sounds great and seems a compact thing, really convinced me ;)
exactly what i was just looking for, a bass module similar to 101. what makes this better than the competition are the cv inputs, i saw several interesting modules, but they all lack cv inputs for modulation.
Doepfer A100 Basic System was my first venture into eurorack modular and still have these modules and they sound great and dead simple to use. Love the Doepfer Wasp filter and this A111-6 would be great complement.
Some months ago I was looking up this module, but there were not many demos out there. I decided to buy different modules for my bass voice. But this video let’s me think, maybe I come back to this module for my second small case?
Part of the magic of the sh 101 was it´s internal sequencer, I did a lot of records in the late 90's with it, is my fav ever synth and the MC 202 my fav sequencer. I love the 21:30 and 24:10 sequences and sound, very NYC techno as I used to do then.
@@dontnormally Hi, i have the Boutique version from roland, the sh-01a. As far as i know the sequencer is the same or at least very similar. A pretty basic sequencer but with 100 steps. I think it‘s the simplicity why it is/was so popular.
As others have said you should check out the Erica Synths Bassline module ( the version with the BBD faux detune ) it’s a What they made into the BD 01 desktop and criminally underrated .
Aw man, what a great video. Nice to see some Doepfer love. I have a few rows of their stuff and the quality of modules is always super high. I was a bit wary of the smaller range as sausage fingers and arthritis mean I find larger potentiometers* easier to handle, but I have 6 of them and for set & forget / externally modulated additions to my rig they are all amazing. A-130-8 VCA is INSANELY cheap and small - so useful. One question; is the 24 dB low pass filter equivalent to any of the other Doepfer filters? I have 5 of their filter modules (and the Dark Energy 3) and this seems a bit different. The Mother-32, Werkstatt or Erica Synths Pico VCF3 currently fills my Moog-esque needs, but hey, that shopping list won't fill itself. :) *I know, it's not the size, it's what you do with it that counts, etc ;)
From functionality perspective looks similar to Erica Synths Bassline module. But Bassline is a bit bigger with 14hp, a bit less CV inputs, but also has BBD to beef up.
Same with the Olitronik Circuits Micròn. All similar full voice packages with a lot of grit. This one's got a few very smart implementations tho, which give it extra mileage, it seems
ok ok, I give in... I've just bought one. was getting rather bored of the Behringer 110 and this seems to have much more balls. Looking forward to getting it... should arrive tomorrow.
The mail man lost one of this a year ago!!! Still bums me a bit but im gonna get a new one in the future!!! Also you should make a suggested techno system part 2 and replace one of the voices with this and maybe add a delay reverb combo mfx!!!
My favourite companion for my rack is the SH-101, problem is it's about the size of my rack (height aside) and I use a module not far from the size of this to feed it in, I feel like this was made for me
VCF is totally different compared to SH101/MC202. Not to mention you can't get the sub OSC to sound like the Sh101. It´s not a SH101 clone...not even 40%
I've been eyeing this for a hard min and will probably buy, but it's def not a replacement for Atlantis. Atlantis is far more flexible and playable. I really need to get atlantis back as it was by far the most fun mono synth/voice I've ever owned.
I’ve seen a few videos on this and for the price I had to get one. I’m new to modular but have a lot of synth joy in my past. So mines in the mail at this time, I know from another video you can run an outside oscillator thru it. Can I run my Radical Technologies 311 swarm thru this? I ask because of the cloning capabilities. Ty great video!
Question.. I'm wondering if my module is faulty. With a CV keyboard plugged in and no notes pressed and the VCA set to active say AD.. Does your module drone. Or is it silent.
@@mylarmelodies For instance, to apply mod wheel to lfo amount on a vco for vibrato. That can easily be done on the a1116 with an external lfo for what I see. But I don’t see a mod input slot on the a1115. I’m trying to decide between the 2 but this matter is confusing
@@mylarmelodies Ah makes sense. From the SH101 comparison I guess the Atlantis is in some ways a more fully featured version of the same sort of thing. I'm looking to keep things compact though so interested in this Doepfer one.
Attack-Decay happens during the same amount of no matter how long you hold the gate down, but Attack Release sustains high if held then goes to Release if released!
The depth of Doepfer modules can be a PIA. Anything that won't fit the Intellijel palette case should be outside the Eurorack specification (personal opinion). I do love the Doepfer knobs too. And the sockets on some of their modules (like this one) are my absolute favorite socket type.
