I review the 2021 Trek Emonda to reveal it's ride characteristics and determine whether it is better than it's upmarket siblings the Domane and Madone.
Special Thanks to
Katrina for providing the model for this review.

I spent hours agonizing over the different models in the Emonda lineup before settling on the SL6 eTap. I seriously considered some of the lighter, more-expensive models, but I decided I needed to focus on the weight above the saddle before worrying about the weight below the saddle.

A year ago I upgraded from 2013 Domane 4-series. It had given me many years and miles of pleasure. I believe it was the human engine and not the bike. My son started cycling and he got an Edmonda, I. was amazed how fast the bike rode. 2022, I upgraded to an Edmonda SL4 with etap. I’ve only changed the cassette to a 10-28. I’m grateful I found your page. I turned 61 this year and cycling has been a game changer for me.

Mine was 2018 and I had the same sort of experience. But I have been crippled from a collapsing carbon fork. I tried to believe that it was a manufacturer's error (which in my case it was) but then a close friend had his Colnago have the entire head tube fall off and he lost a finger. So I simply can't trust carbon fiber and I can't have fun riding while worrying all the time. Steel is real.

You hit the nail on the head in what characteristics the rider should want in their bike. & this is real world riding for all. Unfortunately many people get submerged to thinking they must have all the latest gimmicks & trends that many new bikes have these days (& pay for it). Chasing a certain name brand, power meters, fully internal cockpit etc etc. They discount what the bike actually feels like to ride.

Interesting review Luis. I have an Emonda SL6 from early 2020 and have put almost 9,000 miles on it. Back then, it was their lightweight climbing bike - I was surprised to hear that it felt heavy in this review but maybe there have been changes that have added weight to the Emonda since I got mine. Mine does not have the ISO Speed stuff on it. The Domaine of the same year did and I was glad the Emonda didn't because I'd expect those replacement custom elastomers to be hard to come by in a few years when they starts hardening with age. I see that Trek has removed the handlebar elastomer on one the Domane in 2023 in a bid to reduce weight. Purchase decision: I had a Lynskey GR260 fitted with 28mm road slicks and felt it handled very close to the Domaine. I didn't need two bikes that were that similar. I was surprised at how differently the Emonda handled and went with it. The Emonda was noticeably lighter and more responsive than the Domaine. The frame was stiff and I would have to work very hard to get brake rub when climbing out of the saddle. The Emonda feels "twitchy" and I'm not comfortable on it above 45 mph or in cross winds. The Lynskey I've had up near 55mph on a few occasions and it just felt fun. I'm sure the Domaine would be fun at high speed too. But not the Emonda. The geometry of the Emonda brings the front wheel in and you most likely will be dealing with toe strike. I didn't recall the Domane having that issue. Don't get me wrong, I really like my Emonda and I ride it all the time. I live in the SF Bay area and we have hills everywhere and this bike is a joy to ride on the flats and the climbs. I just need to reign it back in on the big descents. I've done four century rides on it and a decent number of 90, 80, and 70 mile rides as well. I was upgraded to Aerolus (sp?) wheels by the shop I bought it at because the Paradigm aluminum wheels it originally came with cracked on me (the rims on the drive side where the spoke nipples attached) twice. The Aerolus carbon wheels were not game changers but they did dampen the road feel a bit and they were quieter when it came to wind noise. It's good to hear that the Aerolus wheels are standard. My bike also came with the manual Ultregra group set. I had the derailuer cage swapped out so I could run a 11-32 tooth cassette. Oh, a recent discovery, I went with Continental Gran Prix 5000 and TPE plastic tubes recently (stepping away from the Bontrager R tires and butyl tubes) and what an amazing difference that combo makes!

Just getting to the party a couple months late but I’m gonna add my two cents. I am currently building a Trek Madone SL 5.2 from 2007 and they just don’t build them like they use to. With the cost of the bikes today I believe that you are not getting the bang for buck that we did in the old days. Don’t get me wrong that is a beautiful ride and and the components are great but old bikes just gave us so much more. Thanks for the review and have a blessed day.

I am 210lbs and 6'2", and I bought the same bize in the same size, about a year ago, and I love it... The only issue that I found was the tires that came with it... A few months after purchase I upgraded to carbon wheels and tubeless tires and it was so much lighter. You might want to try out the SL6 or another version, that comes standard with the carbon wheels vs. the cost of a later upgrade to the SL5.

Yeah same as me, I just upgraded from the cheap standard wheels on my Domane SL5 after a year. I saved more then a kilo with the Shimano C36 Ultegra wheels so accelerating nad climbing is something else now. I'am really glad Trek makes these entry bikes in carbon fiber. I have 2 Domane SL and these frames are keepers. Rest of the component I like but yes. Of course a twice expensive bike is much better. But I rather anyday have a quality carbon frame then a pair of expensive wheels. It feels so solid on the road and in the first place I went with carbon cause of comfort.

Funny enough, I’ve genuinely been trying to decide between the Emonda and Madone. I was dead set on the Emonda at first, but then came across a few cheaper priced Madones and that’s got me in a tailspin. Honestly, if money wasn’t an issue, I’d spring for an Emonda SLR 9. I’m an over thinker, so I already have a bling build in mind and a lightweight one. Bling Build: Sram red axs etap hydro shifters and front derailleur, force etap rear derailleur with ceramic speed OSPW, Hope calipers, Cannondale SiS2 cranks, CS BB, Princeton 5550 wheelset, Conti GP5000 tires, Bontrager XXX bars and stem. I have 2 Trek's a crossrip and a remedy. Both of these are alloy bikes. The crossrip has 40mm tyres, hydraulic brakes and I recently put clip on aero bars for triathlon. This Bike was bought as a commuter, day tourer. It goes well on dirt, gravel and green mtb trails, easy singletrack. They don't make these anymore. The remedy is a 27.5 duel sus beast with a dropper post. Goes well on jump lines and does all single track. Its old was bought in 2014 and since then geometry for MTB's has improved a lot. I love both of these bikes. I am looking forward to getting a Emonda SL5 I've put the deposit down its going to be used for triathlon with clip on aero bars. I can only imagine how much faster I will be on this. I used to do a heap of road riding on a Fondriest TR3, where I would often be at the front of a pace line. My riding is well suited to time trial. I have a firm belief that the best way to reduce the weight is to be at a good weight yourself. If you weight 5kg less then thats less weight you have to push up hill rather than losing say 1kg off your bike.

2020 ALR5. Size 60CM. Trek does a great job with this bike as you say with respect to paint and welds also it comes with a full 105 groupset, the same comparable competitor bikes give you a non-105 crank which is much heavier than the 105 crankset. At time of purchase with stock severely limited across all brands and models I wanted a bike that I didn’t need to upgrade from the start. Other option available to be was a Giant Contend AR1 from same dealer. Lower end carbon Trek Emonda models didn’t justify the extra cost as an Emonda SL5 was available to me before I found the ALR5. So far the only upgrades I have made are better tires replacing the Bontrager R1 tires to Continental GP5000 & recently switching to RideNow TPU inner tubes which are a game changer in terms of ride and weight savings for the cost over butyl inner tubes. In early spring 2023 the serious upgrades planned are carbon lightweight wheels, integrated one piece carbon handlebar & a new saddle. After that possibly if I can justify the cost I would like Absolute Black chainrings paired with Ultegra Di2, but that’s something I’m still unsure about as BB compatibility may be an issue and alternate options aren’t much better than current stock BB. The one piece carbon handlebars aren’t to fully integrate the cables which isn’t possible but more to clean up the cockpit and for aesthetics of the front end of the bike with minimal weight savings. Only regret was getting the bike in a 60CM size, I think 58CM would’ve been more a dialed in for for myself and body. I’m 193cm tall or 6’3.5” in height.

They are so quick to get up to speed. The stock wheels and tires this bike came with was such a disservice to this bike. I watched quite a few YT videos about the Winspace wheels. Pulled the trigger when they came out the Black Edition. I receive compliments on a regular basis. A mechanic buddy of mine was highly impressed with them. Swoon. I love this bike - Climbing and bombing the Blue Ridge Mountains on an SL6 disc pro. So stable on fast descents, hardly notice crosswinds. 🤩 I’m considering going with wider tires - my cycle friend cruises on a Domane w 32s, while I do feel every bump in the road on 25s. Probably try 28s - but some locals here are riding 30s on Emonda.

I've had the luxury of owning a 2017 Emonda SLR6 full Dura Ace 11sp mechanical and at a size 56, it weighed just under 16lbs. The acceleration to top end and overall comfort is top notch. But now I've upgraded to a 2021 Madone SLR9 and I don't think a road bike could get much better. It's just over 17lbs but it feels much faster than the Emonda, and it actually more comfortable as well. And the Madone holds speed like it has electric assist

at the moment i have a specialized tarmac expert frame from 2019,cahnge frames as the first from 2013 was replaced through warranty , having the money i would possibly try the slr emonda in light weight components as i am a climber by nature ( specialized are over priced ) at the moment i run bontrager Aeolus 5 carbon wheel set , having said that ths summer i tryed a pair of winspace 45mm carbon with carbon spokes 28mm continental 5000 tires ,the difference in the wheel sets do not compare , the response and feel getting up to speed and holding that speed as well as the cornering with the windspace set was way better than the Aeolus , however the one drawback would be the harsh ride especially over the different road surfaces , on a crit good pavement would ignore the road buzz from the wheels , the one thing that would make a difference would be to run tubeless , would be faster and less harsh , climbing with them i did not have enough time to really get to feel them out , as the weather did not co-operate and i had them for just a couple of days as a tryout, on my return ride from the bike shop of 66km on a 26.1km segment had a average of 39.6 km/hr and set time of 39.45 on a 128km ride that day. my previous fastest was 42min in 2015, at 64 years young still like to compete with the youngsters , soory for the long answer .

Hi Sven. The CAAD 10 is a better performance bike when you push it hard. Responsiveness in acceleration and turning in. The Emonda SL is what I tested, and it does everything well and feels more plush. It is a good performer. I ride a 2009 Trek Madone 4.7, which was not one of the higher-end Madones of the time. It weighs around 20 lbs. with its pedals, which for me is pretty lightweight, considering that my previous road and hybrid bikes both weighed 28 lbs. I have to say I'm not terribly impressed with any of the current Trek road bikes, and if I ever have to replace my Madone, I'm thinking of a custom steel bike. As far as the Emonda/Madone/Domane issue goes, I think Trek can still come up with a few more ways to arrange the same letters -- in fact, I'm hoping that someday they'll introduce the Daemon!

After owning a used Emonda SLR from 2016 and an Emonda sl6 from 2019 - both of which were very good light weight rim-brake climbing bikes - I was very disappointed by the 22 sl6 Emonda, which I bought new thinking it will be just as good of a climber as the previous 2, but with disc brakes and an aero design. However, it turned out to be heavy (especially the wheels), beefy and - while prfeclty fine on the flats - not really a natural climber in my opinion - more like an entry level all-rounder... The components on this bike are heavy all the way down to the tires. This is a good bike for someone new to cycling but wants some high end looks. The wheels are heavy carbon and the tires are harsh. The groupset is is nice in that it’s electronic but you can feel it the difference between this and sram higher range. The shifters rattle over bumps and the compact gearing can get tiresome if you are spinning in the 11-13 cogs. There is no 14th tooth gear on this cassette and it jumps to 15 which feels like a climbing gear with a 48 front chainring.I have this exact bike as a loaner while I wait for my project one frame so I do have experience on this bike.
