The thrust washers on either side of crankshaft internally have worn away and causing the crankshaft move side to side and partial sieze . Hence the pulley has no gap.

Oil on starter probably from crank moving back and forth pumping oil out past rear seal

Put crank pulley back on and check crankshaft end float if its manual gearbox get some one to press clutch pedal for you while you use a leaver pushed against the pulley face if you get movement in crank in and out thrust bearings are gone and could also have spun main bearing.

Drop the oil and see if it’s full of swarf.. (check the filter too)

The thrust bearings are definitely done for, which also explains the oil built up on starter as crank play, plus lack of clearance on pulley, definitely pointing to bottom end failure. Also likely rod main bearings are done for or even spun, hence metal shavings. I would drop the oil pan and get access to bottom end would be where I would start. Likely low oil pressure due to ran low on oil, or lack of oil changes and tons of sludge is reason for failure.

N47d20c bottom end failure is common the oil leaks are from crank play damaging them, Take the oil filter out the f series car and check it for swarf

Have you checked the oil filter for metal? I would check out the camshaft for wear. Maybe valves aren't opening properly and causing poor fueling ratio; therefore, the ECM is adding and subtracting fuel.

feel your pain, ive just went through all that and ended up changing the engine, personally id change the fuel filter to start plus having bits of metal arround the crank isnt a good sign even if it is just part of the timing chain cover, that needs to be addressed by droping the sump, timing cover off and oil filter out to check for any metal, if there is then you know not to go any further and get another engine, if its clean then you need it running to see where the knocks coming from, deep sounding knock is probably the big ends, metal sounding knock could be piston slap or injectors, lots of different things can also cause it too tho, youn really need to hear it! wouldnt run it again untill youve checked the oil for metal tho. It's worth compression testing the cylinders (after replacing the front seal and pulley) as it is fairly non invasive but would certainly account for under power especially on a diesel. I fear the slivers of metal you found looked suspiciously like a spun bearing 🫣

From my experience on my e90 n47 it was the fuel presure regulator the main culprit mate

When you fired it up it certainly doesn’t sound like noise from the bottom end, sounds more like noisy injectors, if no faults showing regarding fuel pump I’d say try your E91’s injectors in it. Surely can’t hurt for a few seconds running and may give you a faster answer, hope it’s something cheap and easy for you. On another note I’ve just last Saturday bought an F30 335d M sport, I love it and will now be selling my E91. Keep the updates coming and good luck with it, Joe

Yh mines did the same and kept thinking it was injectors but it wasn't the code I was getting was fuel rail then it turned out fuel regulator absolute ball ache a simple small part caused a massive headache for me

Shine a light inside the tank if you see metal particals its the highpressure fuel pump.

check the end float on the crank,you can normally do it with a pry bar,those bits look like crank thrust washers

Thrust washers are usually in the middle of the crank, not on the outside though

@@GeorgeAusters if they break away they can end up anywhere,what i would do is a put a dial indicator on the crankshaft pulley and lever it back and forth and see how much endplay you have..you should be able to get the specs for your model on line but if its a definite clunk sound it will be behond its tolerance

@@seangreenwood8331 I don't think that is a sure way of knowing because my Mini Cooper S engine that I rebuilt had enfloat way higher than the specs - even with brand new thrustwashers.

@@GeorgeAusters could you not of used oversized thrust washers?....anyway easiest way to check on the bmw is simply get someone to press in the clutch while you watch the crank pulley,personally i would be draining the oil and taking the sump off to inspect the crank

From experience, if it was the HPFP the car would take a long time to start, and after the starter was replaced, it tried to fire up. Also that wouldn't cause that knocking sound. Check the HPFP control valve (on side of pump) for swarf by all means, just to make sure, it's an easy/quick job.

In the right side of the engine where the high pressure pump is, remove the pump pressure regulator and check if is any metal shavings, that will answer to your question, they are 2X T20 bolts if i remember corectly. the injectors are all bad i recon reman or exchange them all, they need to be as close to 0 value to assure a good engine run.

Take off the sump. See if a rod is bent. I hve an Alfa 1.9 jdtm. Turbo was changed but still no luck. After looking around everything and no fault codes so can it be internally. Can still run with a bent rod or a bent valve without drawing codes. Use an inspection camera to check valves

Use ista to do a smooth/rough idle test then reset injector corrections. Then do another idle test and see if it’s any better

This has the cp4. When fuel runs out the pump grenades itself, check the fuel rail for metal shavings

Ain’t no injector or fuel issue that, diesel injectors clack, knocking indicates bearing. And judging by oil under car it ain’t good… Drop the oil and inspect the oil filter first before anything.

I doesn't sound healthy George, and that piece of metal is concerning. Before touching any fuel related parts i would need to be sure that bottom end, head and timingchain are fine. My first step would be like many already mentioned: Check oil and filter.

If the high pressure fuel pump is the cause, you would need to clean out the entire fuel system before you put anything new in; otherwise, you will clog up the new stuff. Check if there's any metal shavings in the fuel system, check the high pressure fuel pump for wear to rule that out first.

Careful turning the harmonic balancer with just one of the bolts. Try to use two tools to distribute the stress or get the BMW tool that fits over all four. Love your videos. Hello from Portland, Oregon.

Fuel should not make it squeak like that. That worries me more then the knocking.. Try to change the good injector cylinder 3 for 5, if the numbers change thats good, if it dosent change its a big risk its bad compression, or just do a compression test first then you dont need to change injectors.

Does it have a cp4 hpfp ? Remove it and check for metal shavings , they are know to fail if car is ran on low fuel.

I’m going with the majority here; at least 1 main bearing gone. (That piece of metal you found is exactly how it would look like; razorsharp flims of metal, also that knock sounds too heavy to be injector related). Confirm this theory bij looking for metal in oil filter, and dropping the sump, it should be immediately clear. If correct, engine swap or rebuild if possible (crankshaft still within specs, bearing rods, cilinder state,…) is the only option, but what was the root cause? Still possible to undo the sale or negotiate something? At least get some insights from previous owner; oil change interval respected or complaints reported?

It is a tricky one but with the timijg chain being at the back of the engine taking it appart is going to be a challenge. Personally I think your best taking the engine out of the car getting it on a stand and giving s full going through.

hey george, what is if you measure the pressure of the rail bar. If its good when the engine is turning it cant be the high pressure fuel pump.

Is it a knock? Played it back a couple of times. Maybe start with simple things like check fuel, pressures etc. then maybe swap 2 with 4 and check codes again. Clearly you’re keen to move on but this car isn’t gonna allow that. Madness running engine with seals removed. When next running maybe check blowby and oil pressure. Compression? Last thing… I had similar poor running experiences and was leaking injector… my opinion derv destroys synthoil. No doubt the chain gang will pipe-up! 👍🏻

I don't think you can ignore them running out of fuel completely before the problems started to occur. Crap/air/both still in the lines perhaps? How old does the fuel filter look? I'd def make sure I'm happy the fuel system is clean before looking at a new block George mate. I might be misremembering but I'm sure a slight mistiming issue can sound like a knock which you'd get with delayed compression/firing on a line with crap in it.

They said they replaced the fuel filter and I did a bleed of the fuel system straight after I collected the car but still the same

@@GeorgeAusters maybe gunk killed an injector/is still in there then. My next move would be putting all back together and using topdon to test each injector or at least be able to turn it over more and zero in on that knocking noise while not having to worry about the oil pissing out maybe?

enine out, tear it apart see the damage than decide if worth repairing or not. That piece of metal shouldn't be there, you cannot sell this car until you know exactly what you are selling imho...

Running out of fuel is not good for the high pressure rail pump, since diesel fuel also acts as lubricant to the pump mechanism. Also, there is a procedure in ISTA to bleed out the air trapped in the fuel line before one tries to start the engine again (might had hard time to start tho)

This engine is done. Sounds like crankshaft or piston rod bearing damage.

It could be anything...literally everything on a BMW fails and I mean everything. Ive owned 2 of them. I now own 2 Toyotas....Pot #4 is toast BTW..Low compression. Engine out. The injectors is compensating for low compression on CYL 4 particularly

Drop the oil and look at what’s in it. Also filter. That knock is not fuel related it’s bottom end. Plus you would have fuel pressure codes if it was pump etc.

First you need to start with the leak down and compression test.....then have the injectors sent out for test or rebuilt.....

Hi George. The timing might be slightly off, causing knocking due to slight contact between valves and pistons....These engines are notorious for timing chain failure, but often stretch slightly before it finally snaps or that the guides collapsing. Don't replace any injectors before you determine if the timing is correct is my advice. As you know you can throw parts on a BMW and still face the original issue...;-)

Could this be diesel knock? If its worse when cold then clears up when warm - that would be my guess. Two dead injectors and maybe injector timing will cause that sort of symptom. They sound terrible if that's the cause. - Good luck 😃😃😎😎

There was a noise like a belt squeal. Thats probably your bottom end bearings.

That from my end looks like some the casing has chipped away around the crankshaft. Is it a tapered/extruded diameter to help seal the o-ring?.

First thing you should do is to check the timing of the engine. I suspect that bad timing of the engine is causing the correction values of the injectors to go through the roof.

I think you need to remove the metering unit from the CP4 and look for metal particles.

i guess you check for swarf in the hp pump. May only be a few bolts to take the bore out.

its bottom end pull it out crank regrind shells possible conrod and it'll be all good I've done a couple off these now and bottom ends are weak due to long service intervals
