F-15EX is best F-15 variant and best overall conventional fighter in terms of reliability, durability, practicality, combat radius, avionics, armaments. The Air Force prefers the F-15EX today because it's supposed 5th generation fighter replacement failed to perform all the sorties required by F-15EX. F-22 failed reliability durability, long term maintenance and it's more of just an air superiority fighter and not a multi-role fighter. F-35A is too small to be the fighter bomber. F-23 is supposed to be the ideal replacement but it didn't enter active service.

I appreciate hearing from a man who is a historian of combat jets. Thank you!!!.... for setting the record straight for those who are not as well versed on this subject. This is sweet music to my ears; being that i have a tonnage of sentiment for the F-15. I love her!!!. From my point of view.... She is an ICON of not just the American Air Combat Fleet.... but other nations as well. She is highly praised; and well deserving of such. The F-22 is undoubtedly a formidable combat jet. "The Air Force prefers the F-15EX today " That is completely incorrect. The USAF never wanted the F-15EX and it still doesn't since the jet cannot survive in contested airspace. Your claims about 5th Generation aircraft not performing the soties required is just utter rubbish, as is your claim about the F-22A. The F-35 too small to be a fighter bomber? Just what planet are you on? This comment shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how modern combat has worked since the introduction of mass produced GPS guided weapons, not to mention the laser guided weapons before them. No fighter flies with the huge loads your idiotic comment implies, they fly with at most four 2000lb class weapons. The huge war loads you fanboys love to point at were never realistic load outs in the past and are not now. The more I read your comment the more stupid it is.

No F-15 will replace the -18. One landing on a carrier would squash those spindly little landing gear. Now perhaps they'll create an EA-15EX or something and fly in concert with the Growler, from AF Expeditionary wings, but the Navy isn't giving up its EA capability in the carrier air wing. Then again, the EW/EA mission isn't really cool enough for the air force, so they'll probably just leave it to the Navy.

The MIG-31 is also a high altitude high speed interceptor but with look down/shoot down radar designed to counter B-1B and B52's on low altitude penetration missions. the F-15EX can carry extended range new generation air-to-air missiles, making kills at around 200 miles. This will make stealth much less of an issue. With the new AF data link, they can hit ground targets using F-35/F-22 information, extending the effectiveness still further, not to mention the ability to use loyal wingman uavs. All this is a significant enhancement of AF capability. especially in the Pacific ocean.

I can envision a scenario where the F-15EX is loaded to bear with the next gen of BVRAAM missiles (AIM 260, etc) acts as a quarterback in launching the missiles well outside the range of enemy IADs or fighters and 5th/6th gen fighters provide terminal guidance. In other words, the F-15EX calls "Eagle 11, YOLO 1" over the net and an F-35 is providing terminal guidance without the enemy knowing it's there. And yes, I'm advocating that YOLO be added to NATO brevity for BVRAAM missile launches in place of a new FOX category.

More F-22s is not an option. The production line was shut down early during the War on Terror: it would be almost as expensive to start it up again as to produce a brand new aircraft. The F-35 does not have the payload, speed and range that the F-15 EX has. It can serve as a missile truck for forward deployed F-35s/F-22s. All in all, it is an economical Fighter/bomber and Missile Truck that can bring the hurt when stealth isn't a priority; and can fire off stand-off weapons to be guided by stealth aircraft in the vicinity.

I think its an overpriced mule that will fall victim to modern SAM systems, even if it stays somewhat back. With that much dakka the plane will be a Christmas tree with all lights on, in the dark sky. Yeah it stays back I get it, but it would still have to be in WEZ which might compromise its safety. Could potentially work as a bait aircraft, but i feel sorry for the crew already. Better use that money on drones, that are linked together with the F-35s and F-22s, with the capabilities of the EX (Missile Bus, bait aircraft), could potentially be cheaper and safer for pilots. US weapon acquisition programmes are just plain idiotic at the moment (from an outsider perspective)

The Strike Eagle and EX being optimized for air ground ordinance payloads while the F-15C is optimized for air-superiority. The Airforce has placed an initial order for 12 F-15CX (often shortened to F-15X) which is based upon the lighter F-15C. The Airforce, mostly for the Air Guard component and some active wings, is said to be ordering between 150 to 250 of the CX variant.

I wonder how useful it would be to have 12 AMRAMMs hanging off a fighter. Tomcats could carry 6 AIM 54 missiles but rarely ever did as the aerodynamic penalties are huge and missiles are expensive. IF you want to shoot down drones you would need a much less expensive weapon. Nice plane though.

Why are we building it? Because they can serve as missile trucks. The F-15 EX 1 of them can carry up to 22 air to air missiles. AMRAM 120’s and Sidewinders. That’s more than even The F-15 C or E could Carry. It has extra hard points and it has more powerful engines to offset the weight increase.

I think the number one reason for the EX is money. Then it is useful because it will be used with stealth aircraft. It needs the 200-mile missile because it will be on the enemy's radar 200 miles out. Also, ROE makes that range highly unlikely if it is an allied fight. The Gulf War proved that. The stealth aircraft won't even be seen at 200 miles and not at 10 miles. The F-15 is a great platform but cannot operate in a theater of sophisticated radar sites without the aid of Gen 5 aircraft and jammers.

Couldn't the f15ex follow behind a wave of f35s/22s that can take out air defenses and leave the 15ex to clean up?

I would think part of it would be that Lockheed-Martin is already maxed out on F-35 production.

It seems like a carrier capable version of the EX would have solved some Navy problems in terms of range and payload too.

Stealth jets needs first tier stealth jet contractors. F15EX can have second tier 4.5 contractors to fix it up. Less secrecy in more traditional planes.

Clearly the 15EX is superior to all adversary jets out there. The “stealth” jets of China/Russia are NOT. They may have lower cross sections than those same sized jets in non-stealth configuration, but not F-22/F-35 peers. Considering that Russia has fewer than 20, and China is only in a very small (relative) theater, the 15EX is a VERY good purchase. The 15EX as a missile truck for the F-35 is a great plan also. The F-35s identify and target the J-20s (unseen) and the F-15EX unloads its missiles LONG before it is in range of the J-20 missiles, a great plan. We need 400 15EXs. The “stealth war” will be over in less than a month of any “near peer” war. The radar based air defenses (SAMs, and other stealth jets) will be eliminated by then. Keep in mind, the U.S. has no need to “invade” either Russia or China. Their war making infrastructure can be eliminated and removed without an invasion, and they both can EASILY be blockaded, starving them in about 6 months. And Both are very ripe for internal revolutions.

We should make a shitload of these things and use them with all of the advanced stealth jets we have and the future ones that come out. They can be used together more effectively than just having some stealth planes. These are fast, maneuverable and carry a lot of ordinance. Plus they're cheaper to operate than stealth Jets.

Should be a nice airframe with the new longer range missiles controlled with datalink from f35s closer to the action. Cool concept.

One potentially exciting development of the F-15EX Eagle Two. There is a proposed dedicated Electronic Warfare variant in development. The Airforce had not had any EW aircraft since the retirement of the EF-111 Raven.
