My F800GS is from the year 2016, I bought it new in Mexico, I traveled with it in the summer of 2017 from Tecamac, State of Mexico to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, round trip, not a single failure, only change of tires, brakes and the main chain in Fairbanks, AK, then I brought it from Mexico to Miami where I living, in Mexico I traveled all over the country, plains, mountains, highways, roads, north to south from east to west, it is an excellent motorcycle.

I’ve had one for 45.000km, I wouldn’t trade it for a 1200, nor an 850. This is one amazing bike, it will take you anywhere you want, specially here in South America. Best bike ever!!!

I had the r1150gsa and the the r1200gs and now I currently have the f800gs no regrets, the f800gs feels much lighter, with the gas tank on the back even make it feels lighter than it is also gives to the bike a great maneuverability

I have an f800gs. A few fun facts: 1) it was the lightest adventure bike before the tenere 700 and 790 adventure 2) it's still faster than both those bikes 3) the rotax twin is incredibly reliable. There are guys out there with over half a million kilometres on their engines with only basic maintenance 4) the stock suspension is garbage
@Babybugex
@Babybugex 4 года назад
The k1200lt has poor suspension from factory as well. A dry clutch that will burn out in days if you rev it over 2k on start...and the worst break lines ever put on a 900 pound bike. other than that and the prostate killing seat it is a great bike..

About the BMW 800 GS i disagree. You can buy the road style. Of you want to go off road you just change the tyres. One thing you must have when you buy One, just ask for the chain and not the Axel shift. Um saying this os because i have the 1200 GS and this os what i do. All the best for.bykers.

It's great bike if you own only 1 bike. Its a little buzzy stock but put a slip on and power commander and it smoothes right out. A lot of people carry a spare 15 tooth front sprocket for off road use. 16 tooth is stock. Can be changed in 15 minutes or so . Turns it into wheelie machine.

Nobody ever mentions the bmw f700gs. It’s the same 800 engine as the f800gs but more roadgoing. The 800 is like a 80/20 mix of off-road on-road. The 700 is the other way round like a 20/80. It handles better, as it’s lower and it’s easy to ride too.

Great video. But after owning both bikes, I would say that the R1200gs "feels" lighter than the f800gs or f850gs. Reason being, the weight sits lower. Put both bikes next to each other, and lean each one over. Yes the r1200gs is wider and weighs more. But it's a serious competitor in terms of how the weight is distributed. That being said I just bought another F800gs because of its width and price being less.

If you have a chance to get a CB 500X do it. In my opinion this may be the best ADV out there. Lightweight with decent power, and it can keep up with traffic on the freeway. Totally different bikes, the Kawi i wouldn't take off road like you could the F800GS the R1200GS is a bear off road to handle its big and can/is done a lot but when you get into the real technical stuff you only drop it once or twice and your pooched. If you want off road go with a lighter 800GS but if your mostly 90% highway 10% dirt road go with the 1200GS. Maybe look at the new Yamaha 700 Tenere. The Kawasaki is a more road going bike, a lot of plastic to break and not really designed for off road work.

R1200gs will take up a bit more room in your garage and is heavier on the scale BUT: it’s balanced better, feels lighter, is actually easier to pick up off the ground than a f800. And anyone that thinks a f800gs has good Riad handling probably hasn’t ridden a good handling bike. The front end is light and vague. The r1200 by contrast leans over with much greater ease and confidence.

i'm 198cm, and i have an 09 myself. i think it's definitely among the best bikes for tall riders. i've tried a few variations of the triumph tiger, the africa twin and a couple of ktm's. it's for sure better than the africa twin. one of the tigers was about same (don't remember exactly which model...) and the ktm 1290 super adventure R beats it. but then, the ktm is a different class of bike, twice the price, 10 years newer and not as reliable. BUT, i wouldn't recommend starting out on a 800gs. it's not the easiest bike to learn on. you will drop it. it's really big and heavy, and driving it feels like a hybrid between a road bike and a motocross.

I owned a '87 R100GS back in the day and I can tell you there is no motorcycle more useful and versatile than an ADV. While I never technically did "off-road" riding I did drive over curbs, highway medians when stuck in traffic, cratered parking lots, dirt roads, sketchy campground paths not to mention rough pavement and soft road shoulders. I would be riding one now if I could get my leg over one, but I may have a RE Himmie in my future.

How much is a final drive for a gs1200?
@aernan
@aernan 4 года назад
I had one done on my r1150gs. I personally removed it and had bmw rebuild it. Something like $500. Also they wear out between 30-70k miles. That is why every other oil change you do the final drive oil to find out if your final drive is going out.

@@aernan I guess I heard some false horror story's about those final drives costing as much as 3k for replacement

LOLOL I laugh at what you say about people buying Jeeps. My wife bought a Wrangler Sahara and it will rarely even see a dirt road let alone off road haha. That looks like a nice bike although I am thinking of trading up my Ninja 1000 for a Honda CB500X as I miss riding on the dirt roads and my wife won't let me take her Wrangler. LOL

@Paul Smith No, I wear a helmet. To answer your second question is to answer why I commented in the first place. Don't do a click bait title video on an old bike and btw this years model is a significantly different to the bike you are displaying, and review it like it's new. Great comparisons to the 1200.....might be too tall or too heavy for some people. Great work keep it up and Jesus was way cool!

I would not trade my gsa1200 for any other bike. It'll tour more comfortably than the chinese engined 800 and is far more torquey and powerful. As 99% of owners will never go off road the smaller bike's only real advantage is gone. The weight doesn't matter on road and the 1200 is about as manouvrable as bikes get. If I had an 800 I wouldn't change that either because it also does most things well plus I wouldn't eant to pay the extra for the gsa! This is the main selling point of the 800....value. it's a fantastic bike for the money. Over here in the uk used prces have risen so my 2016 gsa is worth as much now as when I bought it 2 years ago and a similarly spec'd ones would set you back over £20K. That makes the 800 a bargain.

Isn't the 800 rotax built in Austria. The newer 750/850 have a loncin engine built in China.
@ReferenceFidelityComponents
@ReferenceFidelityComponents 3 года назад
@@chrishart8548 you may well be right but I thought all of the 800s were now Chinese made. It doesn't change my personal thoughts though. The 1200 is the better bike, price aside. Once you experience the torquey boxer, no other bike will do.

@@ReferenceFidelityComponents I tried the r1200gs and the S1000xr and was happy to get my f800gs back. It's a 2014 has dynamic pack (esa) (asc) etc and comfort pack. They all have there advantages.
@ReferenceFidelityComponents
@ReferenceFidelityComponents 3 года назад
@@chrishart8548 they do but to really appreciate the gsa you need an extended all day ride. It is more comfortable than the gs and has more legroom and more suspension travel. It is effortless, comfortable and characterful. The torque and flat twin are the heart and soul of the bike. CoG is remarkably low too. My gsa is the 2016 model and has all the bells and whistles including dynamic esa, plus it has the full pannier complement; heated grips, full led lights, spots, 5 engine modes for various surfaces or weather. It's a complete joy to ride.
@chrishart8548

@@ReferenceFidelityComponents I was surprised how the 1200 never felt like it would ever tip over. Even 2 up and 3 point turns the manageability was mind blowing. 125mph 2 up with no effort. The screen is also very effective. They are amazing bikes. The 800 is a fun little bike though and cheap if it's bought outright. Insurance for me is £65.25 for the whole year. If a was changing bikes I couldn't even decide between a S1000xr and a r1250gs.
