I have been testing the 177 slugs for a long time, and just couldn't get them to group at all. Until I had a Lothar Walther barrel made spesifically for the FX, the results were astounding.

IIRC, Viking Air gunner also had some slug issues in .177. I believe his was in relation to a longer 700mm barrel. I can't say for sure, but he's also worth checking out if anyone is interested in .177 slug testing.
I have then experienced that my 700 mm liner in .177 is considerably more accurate than the original 600 mm. You obviously have to be a little lucky to get a barrel that can shoot accurately. 😉
@@TheLandbo Thanks for the assist, Viking in Denmark has had the opposite experience, changing back to the 600mm as his 700mm hates slugs. That is the challenge i have with FX - why do you need to get lucky when buying an expensive item?
@@AimSmall Yes Peter has gone all the way back to the original barrel on his FX IMPAC M3 while I still use my 700mm barrel with a Huma dual transfer port. Furthermore, I have tighter springs on the hammer and the valve which means I only need to have 110 bar in the plenum to be able to shoot a 13 grain slugs well over 300 m/s (1000 fps.) with a normal range of +/- 1 m/ s (+/- 3 fps) over two magazines. Normally, like Peter, I shoot my slugs between 296-298 m/s (1000 fps) as they seem to be most accurate at that speed in a regular FX liner. We both need a better slugs liner in .177 or a barrel that can shoot accurately over more than 100 meters, because that is the distance where the precision suffers with the barrels we have now. Likewise, FX's standard liner is not suitable for slugs heavier than 13-15 grains, as the liner cannot stabilize them.

I have a .177 Dreamline in FAC . Agreed my power adjustment only allows up to 19ft/Ib but I totally agree with your findings. I couldn't get the slug speed up to anywhere near the speeds that you tested at. But my groups were dreadful. It's just as well the rifle shoots clinical groups with 10.34gn JSB's because I love this rifle to bits. On a side note your content and presentation is brilliant. You are very easy to listen to. Loved this video. Massive fan of .177 and LW barrel on my wish list for my Wildcat. Having a mare with all slugs through my Maverick .22 in 700, 600 & 500mm barrels but H&N Slug HP in 16gr and 20gr groups well through the Wildcat .177 FX 500mm barrel. Interesting to see how these slugs perform in LW barrel. Let us know what you think.
I have a Weihrauch HW100S .177 I wanted to shoot slugs out of . I had to adjust the valve to increase the speed . The slug I found that worked the best at a speed of 920 FPS was the JSB Knock Out 13.43 grain Slug . It equals in accuracy to any of the Diabolo pellets I shot before switching over.
Hi Gert, great video definitely proved a point in this video. So basically the lower twist rate 1:16 istead of the FX 1:18 did the trick on the LW barrel or was there other differences as well? If that is the case I guess it corresponds a little to firearms. They usually say lighter ammo higher twist, heavier ammo less twist, in this case the difference is pellet vs slug, light vs heavy
Actually 1:16 is faster than 1:18. 1:16 means it spin the projectile one revolution in 16 inches, 1:18 means it spins the projectile one revolution in 18 inches. Lower number - faster twist rate. The regular Fx Superior barrels in .22 is 1:24, the Superior Heavy 1:16.
Love it. I have a FAC .177 leshiy (350 mm), with the LW barrel..Never tried slugs because it was described as "a pellet barrel".. Well seems it can do both. PS! the H&N Barracuda Match is superb for the LW. Even at +950 fps.

Awesome! I also have decided to try playing around with a .177 barrel on my FX Impact MK2. I awaiting regulator parts. But it really looks like a LW barrel with it's faster twist rate is the direction to go. Where could one obtain one of these LW .117 barrels for an FX Impact? I'm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Gert i dont know if this will work on your impact or if your impact is capable of achieveing these speeds in .177 but ive got my Hatsan AT44-10 .177 shooting 13.43 grain knockouts at 1060 fps avg and they stabalize very nicely at those speeds i can shoot sub moa groups at 50 all day long, if you can i would recomend you try it
That is cool. I mentioned how I get good results from18" 1/16 twist, when all you were trying .177 slug out of FX. Gerhard just did a video with FX 700mm in 1/16 twist and had good results. It's nice to see other can get those results from Lothar Walter barrels too. I thought I was lucky . Ps. That pink shit is awesome.
Remember Gerhard shoot 16gr and 20gr slugs with a lot of modifications on his gun... also a faster twist rate in that 700mm, Viking changed back to the 600mm as he couldn't get any consistency

Curious to see what slugs would work through the Avenger Bullpup/Behemoth .177 cal PCP FAC. The slugs I bought from NSA must be too big because they got stuck in a barrel that is notoriously not pellet fussy🤷♂️💯 If you could do it you may be the first on RU-vid bud.
If someone should do something about .177 barrels it should be FX, their barrel making are much more tweak able than traditional ways, so theoretically they could try 5 or so different designs in 1 day.
I've been very curious about this: a heavy 177 slug (30gr?) would have an awesome BC! However, it seems like it's more difficult to get decent speed in 177 vs 22?
My experience with slugs in .177 is that they should preferably not be much heavier than 13 grains in order to shoot fairly accurately. This is presumably because there is too little twist on the regular liner and there is also too much choke out at the end of the liner. FX has announced that they will come up with a "real" slugsliner, but that company definitely does not ride on the same day as they saddle the horse, as it has been several months since they made the announcement. 😢
Scott Rentschler I have and like FX guns. after watching everyone trying to get 177 cal slugs out of fx guns with not good results. I went to a Vulcan 3 shooting a Zan 13 gr slug shooting 837 fps with groups under MOA at 50 yrds, even MOA at 100yrds. My feeling is if you want to shoot 177 cal slugs get yourself a AGT gun. :)
Hey Gert…. I know you made this video a year ago…. I use a LW Polygon 1:17.7 twist in 0.177…. I can get 15mm groups at 41m using H&N 10gr slugs…. I have no luck with JSB or NSA… My reg setting is 95bar, my hammer spring tension is 3/4 max, average speed of slug is 988fps w/ extreme spread of 12fps…. The 10gr works better in 0.177 than the 13 & higher grains… That is my findings anyway…. I also find that I can shoot the H&N Baracuda Match with these settings at 880fps so this is my choice for 25m & 41m Benchrest…

I still have a .177 break barrel and a multi pump pneumatic, but I've kinda gave up on .177. For me, my .22 air rifles are better all around. I understand in some parts of the world .177 is all people can get their hands on. Our federal and state politicians are introducing bills left and right (at least 1 a week or more) to try and limit our firearm rights here in the USA. It's only a matter of time before they start trying to also ban and regulate our air launchers too. Edit: Always enjoy your videos and data that you share Gert!
Thanks Joshua, we are having the same challenges here, the laughing stock is the Police has more of their own firearms stolen each year than the whole population combined. lol. Yet they want to make it more difficult to legally own a gun.
@@AimSmall they got bigger issues than worrying about pellet guns 🔫. In the UK they really are trying to take everyone guns from them. Not sure what is going on at the moment. Trying to ban lead now. That means the death off airguns and 22lr.
Oh maybe sence Fx has less aggressive rifling they use a tighter choke. Lothar Walter uses aggressive rifling and maybe a light choke??? Slugs by nature are finicky when it comes to chokes??? I know you know this I'm just thinking out loud.
Thanks Tog, tried indexing as well, it is massively time consuming and buggers up the o-rings between liner and shroud, plus the orings tend to shift - POI shift follows. FX can make better barrels, they just need to try.
Have to order one specifically from LW, this is not a standard barrel, LW barrels are usually 16mm diameter but the FX needs to be 14mm, you can mill down a normal LW barrel but it is going to be precise work and lots of it.
@@geotra9177 I did it through a friend in Germany, they it was about $250 including DHL per barrel. It was a battle with the export of the barrel so you might want to work through a gun dealership. The barrel is also not shrouded - it is very loud, so I added a barrel clamp for a silencer , another $100

You must specify that it is a 14mm diameter 177 barrel to fit the FX as they have to cut it accordingly, I have the 500mm, maybe you can ask for a 600mm?
@@danielwayn 1:16 twist rate (406mm) only available in 16mm diameter. Plus my barrel is only 500mm. Was sepcifically ordered... Don't know if the 1:18 (450mm) that is available in 14mm diameter is going to have same accuray.
That is not 100% correct, the choke isn't the biggest issue... They were built for pellets with soft skirt able to flair open in the barrel, slugs are more rigid, if the barrel isn't snug they won't fly true or accurate.
@@AimSmall how large would slugs need to be to work in the current FX pellet, 1:18 liners? I used a 177 pellet gauge on JSB 13.4gr knock out slugs. The majority were 4.54mm, not sure how much large you could go on diameter?
@@johnmichelini4841 4.54 is a good start, that is one of the reasons the JSB did not to bad in the FX barrel, I would suggest a 4.55 or even 4.56 might be the way to go.
The goal of FX liner is company profit, yes it is!!! FX liner production cost is less since it requires less material, and production volume is high since it is faster to manufacture. It is clear here that failure was intentionally created.
The Superior Heavy slug liner is built to shoot slugs heavier than 30gr and only available in 22 calibre. As mentioned in the video, Hein Fromman is hopefully working on something in the 177 calibre. This has not been FX's target market, so their is no urgency for them to develop anything. They can't keep ahead with production of the bigger calibers.
it looks to me ,if slugs are at justmax pellet speed to group wel , why slugs ,a pellet will do ,i would use slugs if i could shoot it at 1200 fps and accurat
To be honest, if you really wanted both barrels to give the best groupings, you would fine adjust the gun further around the most accurate speed. Choosing the speed on 5 differnt speed settings, where some of them are 40fps+ apart is not really tuning, it is more like hit or miss finding the sweetspot. It is obvious slug B shoot bad in the FX barrel. But the target shot at 920 fps with slug A with FX barrel seems to me just as good as the lothar walter barrel. It shows the sweetspot for that barrel is around that speed. But since the gun never was fine adjusted around that, we will knever know what the endresult could be. But I agree the lothar walter barrel seems not as speed sensitive, while the FX barrel has a norrower sweet spot.
Harmonis tuner will not work, I shot that barrel at all speeds, with all different setting to try and get the harmonics 100% - no use, not even adding weights, different silencers and other gadgets... you can fine tune a good barrel to be better, but there is very little you can do to a bad barrel, or in my case... barrels. Both the 500mm and 600mm is useless with slugs.
