You forgot to mentioned in your video about battery issues drains super fast and camera gets super hot there’s is lots of videos in RU-vid about this issue.
I have a feeling that the lens cover on the Hero 8 is not as "nonreplaceable" as everyone assumes. There is a seam around the front cover and the rear lcd which seems to indicate how the camera was assembled at the factory. The front probably can be pried off taking the lens cover with it. If that is the case, it is only a matter of time before some factory in China starts cranking out replacement lens covers for the Hero 8. I purchased a non fisheye lens for my Hero 4 Black a couple of years ago. Removing the stock lens and installing and focusing the new one was not a job for the faint hearted.
Due to my disability I was a Gopro fan for a few years for its ease of use. Never let me down. As always I Sold my hero 7 to upgrade to the 8 but before I did saw many reviews and sadly wasn’t enough to convince me this time. Just for the camera I’m now blogging with my iPhone 11 Pro, so yes no phone service. Recording is amazing day and night, 4K 60fps front and back cameras. Maybe the hero 9 can step it up and bring back the action camera.
I upgraded from a Hero 5, and am VERY excited to sell off my gimble. My primary use is scuba diving trips, so the removable lens cover has never been a concern. The stabilization is what I wanted underwater, and while filming on the boat. I must admit though, there are some insane new underwater housings for iphones that even have temperature and depth sensors. Oh, and O-H!
I was excited about the 8 when I first saw it. But that non removable lens cover is a deal breaker for me. Maybe once they see how many sales they've lost because of that, they will add it back to Hero 9.
Probably be videos taking it totally apart and replacing the lens with a generic one. Probably won't be that hard, I've done phones. But I agree it's silly because people make lenses/fitlers for the other models.
@@ScrambledNotEggs yea I bought one but no protection because I didnt know. All I have is an underwater case. Part of the reason why I quickly purchased go pro 8 was of the hyper stabilization 2.0 and how well films underwater. ( going scuba diving around first week of January at the Cayman islands
I had two sevens, bought an 8 and recently another 7. Hate the door on the 8 and the 7 operating system is easier to use on the fly. On the lens, I just tape a piece of ND film over it. Need that anyway for prop issues shooting aviation.
I don’t understand the big controversy when you can buy one for $20. I know it’s the principal but $20 is not a deal breaker like people suggest it is..
@@jackson.denzler. Gopro has a front and rear tempered glass adhesive lens/screen protector set for $20. And I'm sure the aftermarket will soon flood with cheaper options. Plus there is the $50 dive housing if you really get rough (the audio though...).
I managed to get a Hero 8 two days ago and for me and my “niche” films it has blown me away. I have been using a Go Pro Hero 6 with a Feiyu Tech WG gimbal AND external audio, heavy and cumbersome and a pain to edit. Yesterday in rain, strong wind and constant movement the Hero 8’s Hypersmooth 2.0 was out of this world, also the audio despite the high wind was amazing and it picked up the other guys that were with me far better than my external recording mics.....thumbs up from me in the UK!
Hero 8 rocks I'm very impressed with night shots and lapses & how smooth the video stays stable! The quality of the noise comes out very nice too😊 Just have a housing unit ready for the camera only if you're doing extreme stuff to protect your camera lens!
@@gLajay6 i never use gimbal with gopro 7 and and i'm satisfied. I see no difference in stability between normal videos taken with Gopro 7 black and Gopro 8 for normal movement. So I also stick to Gopro 7 black. Maybe wait until there is amazing change in the next gopro.
I would’ve agreed with you in 2019 when you originally made the comment but with the pandemic going on and many doing work and school from home when possible, gopros make great webcams when combined with a capture card! (The Hero 8 can be used as a usb webcam but only on Mac unfortunately)
@@empedance1933 Yeah, it doesn't make a great webcam. Webcams are cheap if not already installed in most laptops and in some monitors. $400 for a webcam with features that you can't use. And Mac only.
We GoPro users end up buying a bunch of accessories anyway right? Just buy a protective housing..GoPro OR aftermarket. I still have a Hero 3 and keep it in a waterproof housing for protection from drops and scratches. (I have the one that will hold the camera and the $79.00 LCD Screen) If I want absolute best quality just for handheld shots I remove the camera from the housing. If your around gritty lens spoilers like sand or dirt, you shouldn't film with an exposed lens or irreplaceable lens housing as in the Hero 8 anyway. (Such as intense cycling, beach activities on the sand, ATVing, mudwrestling LOL...yeah.) I have a DJI Mavic Air and I bought a lens filters kit, and you can bet I will have a UV filter on it to PROTECT the lens on the drone. I have a problem with GoPro's prices for accessories more than the Hero cameras. And if you join the GoPro Plus for 5 bucks a month, you're supposed to get 50% off on some accessories. Good luck with that because its not a whole lot of items. That's why they lose soooo much money to aftermarket people making same things for so much less. Yeah, I know some are cheap, but if you buy on Amazon and you don't like it, send it back. Sometimes I order several things at the same time from different manufactures and compare all at once . This way I don't have to try/send back/ get another/ yada yada. Now, it's time for me to start learning my new Hero 8, so excuse me folks!
First, I'd have to agree with all the comments and opinions in this video. Second, I'd love to own a Hero 8, it is the best action cam ever made. Third, I know I'll never own a Hero 8 as they are far too expensive. Fourth, Here in Canada, the Hero 7 is still over $600 even though the Hero 8 has been released. I guess the bottom line is if you want to pay for an expensive action cam that you can potentially break the first time you use it? Bottom line; a great camera, I just with they were under $100 each.
Hey man, this was a truly great video. I just bought a GoPro 8 and I'm finding out some of its nuisances a little bit late. Luckily for me I didn't buy it primarily as an intense action camera and for whatever little intense action my camera might ever see, I will just buy the protective action case and the lens protectors. My GoPro will live a mostly pampered life lol. Nonetheless I do agree with you that HDMI and particularly the replaceable lens cover should have been included as standard options with this camera, especially for those who truly intend to put the "action", into their action camera. As for the cost of some of the expansions and accessories, I heard it is possible that some of those $80 dollar add ons might go on sale this December, but perhaps only for the GoPro Plus subscribers... whio for the moment get 50% discount off of most of the accessories, which at least makes the extra expenses a little bit more tolerable and you do get a free 30 dat trial, so that is something to take advantage of for anyone purchasing the new GoPro 8.
The non removable lens cover is not a deal breaker for me (I traded my banged up Hero 4 Black in on the 8). I just went on Amazon and purchased a housing good to depths of up to 60 meters for $16 and some stick on tempered glass protectors for the front and rear LCDs as well as the lens cover for another $10. I don't think that is too outrageous a price to add a little protection to a $400 camera. Taking away the HDMI out port does suck though. Compared to my old Hero 4 Black, the 8 is light years ahead in every aspect.
Great review! You hit the nail on the head! I currently have the Hero5 Black with the Karma Grip. The Hero5 could take a beating and still survive, the problem for me was grabbing it quickly for a weekend getaway and remembering the Karma Grip to take smooth videos. I'm getting the 8 to supplement my Hero5, but mainly for family trips/weekends when I don't want to lug around the Karma Grip. The 8 probably won't see much action since it's not as rugged, but it will be nice to take on easier hikes, or walks!
Upgrading from the Hero4, none of those cons are deal breakers for me. I've already spent the last 4+ years without a removable lens. The only other negative is if the legs broke, well, then I would have to get a case for it...much like I've already had to do with the Hero4. I make things work, for as long as possible!
I feel like they are trying to make the camera disposable or easy to lose or damages easily. I’ll just buy some screen covers. I feel this cam is slightly better than others
“I don’t usually talk about color science” I’m a new subscriber here, but I’ve watched several videos and you’ve talked about color science in like 95% lol.
The non removable lens on the 8 is solved with the rollcage accessory that has removable lenses - which they should have included in the box as a gesture of goodwill. With it installed you have twice the protection as the previous generation. I agree they should have kept the removable lens feature.
Great video, I love the camera too. If you buy the warranty they will replace the camera if anything happens. Also you get half off the accessories and mods!
Gopro 8 might be the best action camera ever... But for one thing... Can't change out the Lens if you damage it... That for me and many other Quad flyers make it a NoGoPro... Unless your not bothered about another £300 new unit as opposed to a £20 lens swap on the GoPro 7..
Or unless you Johnny fpv or Mr. Steel. They throw things at those guys. We need to get our flying game up. Before buying anything this dumb that the lens cant be changed.
9:30, could not agree more! Trying to justify getting the 8, after having the 7 black. I can't see upgrading when the features are being taken away. At the same time, you can get a $23 dollar aluminum cover/frame for it on amazon. I would not trust the built in mount pieces. I would buy a frame for it, and not have to worry about trying to rely on those little pieces.
my wife bought me the blcak 8 and first thing i did was go on amazon spent 150 dollars and bought an aluminum case with shoe mounts the led light and mic the whole 9 yards i have tko say its a pretty capable bad ass little camera and it stomps my 7 white crushes it.
Good info. My curious mind is wondering how well the mods are going to work. I'm still thinking there are much better options. If the system functions well, having everything designed to work together could be perfect for some folks
Yeah I absolutely think there would be better options out there as an all in one camera instead of buying expensive addons to an already expensive camera.
@@TheEverydayDad So at this time would you choose DJI OSMO Action or Hero 8? Camera will mainly be used for POV hunting and fishing as 2nd camera angle? Love the thought of the front facing camera for framing.
I have been using a 5 as my first and go-to camera for 2 years. I shoot fishing videos where it's almost always strapped to me....the non-removable lens cover doesn't seem like that big a deal to me -AND- depending on your use, you might need a vlog case with cold shoe mounts anyway, so if you were to break the mount fingers off...just put it in a case...no big deal. The door is crap though.
It'd be cool to see a GoPro Hero 8 vs Sony FDR X3000. Stabilization is a no brainer. It's obvious the current GoPro would win. But it would be neat to see the color differential side by side. Always a pleasure watching your videos
All of your positive comments are great; however, I cannot, repeat, cannot, open the battery compartment to recharge my camera. It will not open for me. I have not even been able to set up the camera. Yes, I've read the instructions and tried to follow them. I get the little red line but the door will not open for me.
The audio wind noise is horrible if you are doing anything above walking speed. Kind of splits the field but thought people should know about this issue....
In the official GoPro Hero 8 introduction video, they state that hypersmooth 2.0 can be used in ALL video modes and frame rates, but I guess that isn’t true as it doesn’t work on linear mode.
Tell me like it is, daddy. Also: subscribe to their $5 a month thing, get 50% off mods, cancel later, trade in your old camera from 2008, get the media mod + display mod for under $400
Mine is being delivered Thursday, I find I use my hero 7 black so much for youtube so the 8 will be a real boost for me. Two small action cameras can fullfill my every need.
Garry Gadget got my 8 last week to go with my 7, it looks awesome. Only let down with connectivity, the 7 is fine the 8 not so. Hopefully a firmware update is around the corner
I use my gopro for about everything. That lens would scare me even though I’ve never had any problem with my camera now but it would always be in the back of my mind. I think some of the videos you normally would do with the older gopro’s you would hesitate to do with the 8 in fear of scratching it or breaking the mounts on the bottom. It’s like a phone though! Give a few months and they will release a new on and hopefully the new one will have the cover. I’m sure they have had plenty of complaints about it.
Gimbals unnecessary? Nope. As soon as light gets low, no EIS works well. Everyday Dad videos are all middle of the day videos but not everyone has the same time of day habits. But, even more importantly, EIS crops into the sensor. Turning off the EIS and using a gimbal gets a wider picture. There are plenty of times when that is valuable. Yes, gimbal use needs are reduced, but eliminated - definitely not.
Nice review EDD. Agree a lens cover is a must have. I am hoping for a new / updated FDRX3000 some time soon. Its Zeiss optical stabilization works really well for me. I find it to be "stable enough" for my needs, and its full-uncropped 170 degree field of view is amazing. I wish its low light performance were better though... its really bad.
I have one and believe the audio is best when done in a closed space such as a small room or even the car. In an open area, or larger area, I feel the audio is awful. Just my two cents. We'll wait until the media mod microphone comes out to see if that will improve it.
The lens is not such a bad thing. Firstly it stops moisture and dust entering the lens hardware. Secondly, even if the glass DOES break, you can easily replace the glass cover yourself by heating it off and using a $15 replacement lens from Alibaba. It's just a $350 camera, and honestly the sealed lens makes it an even better camera. You can also get screen protector glass that fits the lens just in case you're paranoid.
Assalamualaikum brother, thank you for this input. This is exactly the type of input I have been looking for. I have been concerned about the lens, but I repair small electronics on my own all the time. Was looking for information about replacing the glass independently. Thank you for the insight. I will be buying one this week. It seems to have the best stabilization and colors pallet.
@@LeviHeatonIII There are tutorials online that will show u how to replace the lens. You can use black aquarium silicone to restick a new glass lens on there. You need to use a heat gun and scalpel to remove the broken/scratched lens.
Man the RU-vid compression on GoPro footage is disgusting, a lot of artifacts! Also so many people complaining about the non removable lens, just get a simple protector. Sure there's a ton of options. Most people won't even manage to get that original lens scratched...
IN MY OPINION AT THIS TIME THE BEST GO PRO IS THE 7 black. Why because one you can replace the lens cover plus you don’t have to fight with the floppy flimsy tripod flaps. Go pro 7 black is better. The cameras do record identical no difference
You are the mannnnn! I love your channel reviews. A friend loaned me his GoPro 8 and it froze on me. I was upset for losing memorable footage that I made a video about it. Let the world know if your GoPro 8 freezes just like all of them
I used to have real bad problems with the Hero 6 freezing on me all the time or just not recording my video afterwards. I haven't had any problems with the Hero 8 so far or I would have said so.
Ain't you the lucky one😂👍. Thanks for letting me know you haven't had the freezing issues with GoPro 8. Keep using the GoPro 8 and it will freeze, then you can show all your followers, and that would be great😂😂😂. Brilliant channel and amazing energy, thanks 👏
thanks man!! I like your videos, technical but not borring! Now I will go and see the 7 vs 8 video you made! I have a very old Hero camera, that is was the cheapest one available in 2014, now I want a better one and have the 7 and 8 for options!
I enjoy your videos, keep them coming. I have a Hero 3 from the stone age and it still takes great video, but the stabilization of the 7 and 8 make me think I got to have a new one. I know the big downside of the 8 is the non removable lens cover and for me I think I'm ok with it. I will use it for windsurfing mtbing and diving. For me if I dive with it I need a case anyway, so that takes care of the lens problem. Now will image be noticeably different when encased ? Also a bigger issue that seems to be popping up is that GOPRO 7 and 8 seem to be freezing or crashing. Any experience with this happening?
Depending on the sport you are recording, a replaceable lens cover may not be an issue. As long as your camera is not in the direct line of fire then you will never have to worry about it. If you keep your GoPro away from dangerous situations, it should last you a long time.
Thanks for the awesome review, have been waiting for it! I actually think that the Hero7 black is convenient enough as an action cam if the 8 is not that durable! Well, durability is the most important here!
Im getting my first action camera this weekend and im going with a hero 7 black. I only plan on using it for road cycling. I might need to get one of those wind jackets to muffle the wind but i plan to to overlay music and mute the audio alot anyways. The removable/replacable lense is a huge selling point for me on the 7 as well.
Glad it's not too much better than the 7, cause now the 7 will be cheaper. Definitely prefer that over the 8 with the unremovable lense. Also not a fan of that weird flip connecter bracket. For me the removable lense cover is a deal breaker.
You can get an entire tablet or smart phone for $50-100 thus the add on screen for gopro is stupid expensive. It's just a tiny screen, probably $10-20 max. Plus you can't really replace lens cover. They basically force you to pay the monthly fee for the gopro pro membership. I really wanted it but its all over priced. Unless you are straight up rich its just better to get like 4 cheap action cameras for same price as one go pro. At least then I can set up different angels for cool edits. Even the black Friday deal doesn't make this worth while.
Shouldn't you reach out to GoPro and ask why they changed the lens design? I am told it is about ensuring the camera is fully waterproof. But, it could also be to ensure action users have to replace it more frequently.
Hey!! Nice video . Love your reviews and since someone decided to pickpocket my gopro hero 5 this weekend with the vids of my sons on it i am looking for another camera again.
The skin tones is a big deal. Looks horrible on the 7 so need to shoot flat and adjust the tones in post. Good to hear the 8 is better using GoPro colors.
In my opinion, there will always be a gap between an "action cam" and a regular DSLR camera. I love small action cams that you can put in dangerous situations which record decent quality video but are entirely expendable. But on the flipside, when you prefer higher quality video you can always use an expensive camcorder to get you those better shots. The downside is that you would never place a $2000+ camera is a situation where it could potentially be damaged. I guess the bottom line is that your best option is to have a few expendable action cams to record video in dangerous situations, and combine it with camcorder video which you can record from further away where there is no danger to the more expensive high quality camera you're using.
@@lucyeckel7832yesss just get it, you will be happy you purchased it. It is a great camera, lots of cool features, water proof, and good stabiliser. a little expensive but imo worth it.
Only thing I want is the stabilizer, but I don't like the pale boring lack of colors in the forest. I just stick with the Sony 3,000, & spent the money with pa better LCD screen.
I'm not buying. The 7 is good enough. This seems to me to be a step backwards in functionality - if I'm paying £400 for a camera I expect an HDMI and audio jack. My guess is DJI will come out with a newer version of the OSMO action which has these features built in - this could put Go Pro under serious pressure.
The irony is the 8 is the best vlog action camera ever made but... the cell phones are just that good or better too. So for vlog purposes not really worth it. BUT for extreme sports well it is an action camera! Much better use for it here than skiing down a mountain with a iPhone. That non replaceable lens hurts though. They did say they made it tougher but idk if that’s good enough. I’m waiting for the new insta 360 one x next year. Probably called the two x. I think 360 action cameras are the future being able to change your field of view in post is huge. And as much as I love go pro think they missed the mark on a few things with the max.
9:58 My Sony HDR-AS50 lens is non-removable as well and has no cover (unless you buy one which distorts image). When I scratched the lens I had to replace the whole camera. Thankfully its a cheap action camera with absolutely amazing video quality for its price range. That being said I may try the Hero 8 like I did with the Hero 1234567. Maybe it will finally replace my Sony?
Man.... I am sooooo thinking about replacing the Osmo but I won’t because I am on the fence of the Hero 8’s placement of battery door, breakable mount pins, non removable lens cover, etc... Great video and I would really like to buy one however I see Osmo Action 2 coming Qtr1 2020.
If the sharpness is set to high or medium the footage look terrible! If iso max is major of 200 image quality is terrible. But if your fix those the 8 is incredible
1:49 Dad sneakers! I bought the camera yesterday, and sent GoPro an old action cam for $100 off the 8 Black, and am waiting for it to arrive. It will be awhile, up to 2 weeks, to verify the old camera. So what am I doing in the meantime? Watching videos about how the camera sucks, with its floppy mounting tabs, non-replaceable lens cover, crappy battery compartment door... but now I don't feel so bad!
My wife and I have purchased our first GoPro the Hero 8. We have found your RU-vid videos very helpful, but a couple of questions if possible. 1. My wife and I are novices who will use it mainly for travel videos and family get togethers. Do you have suggested everyday set it and forget it video and photo settings for everyday older people like us (almost 70). We will be doing playback either on our computer or our LG Oled 4K HDR DolbyVision TV. Thank you for any help you can offer. 2. With Hero 8 how do I film a continous travel video instead of dozens of individual videos everytime I press record and stop. I know you probably get many questions and cannot answer all, but I thank you for your consideration and any help you can offer.
In my opinion, an action cam is not the type of camera you need for the video you want to record. Action cams are made specifically for sports, where you can get the camera very close to the action you are trying to capture. While I own 5 action cams, I also have a Canon super-zoon point and shoot camera. I find that my Canon camera is far better for the travel type videos that you are referring to. I find it is always best to buy a camera that is specific to what you want to use it for.
Why can’t you speak about all the neg issues with both cams, Go Pro 7&8? Such as the freezing, horrible battery and many more complications. Please do. I still use the session 5, thing works nice, but need more obviously. As a real still photog, still shooting a Mamiya on a project. I’m not use to cameras giving me issues. Just not sure what GP will actually work longer then an hour in harsh cold conditions.
I have the gopro hero 5 black with the removable lense. Never had any reason to remove it yet but I have to say at times when submerged in water? There is condensation under the glass in the lens and the footage is blured from it. Ruined and unusable. I bought the 8 black actually hoping that won't be an issue because the lens is sealed.
