law of diminishing returns greatly applies to jobs in terms of salaries vs joy. Extra few % of money often comes via x2-3 effort For myself I found i enjoy leadership and management just as tech. But i find benefits and extras of leadership or mgmt or tech lead positions are marginal at best, in germany for sure. Prob it may be different in US scaleups, but i doubt it is generally that different in US. When it comes to jobs i had i always stayed away from being promoted up and saw plenty of great engineers turned into overburdened and unhappy managers for basically minimal extra benefits. Also very few engineers are wired to be managers, even when it comes to positions like team lead with minimal mgmt. Management is a discipline in its own right after all. And so it happens too that with career growth in mgmt direction people loose at some point that connection to the passion that got them into into industry in the first place, but become process slaves.. It is truly sad to see it at times
