The weirdest thing is that a load of USA citizens seem to think you're poor if you don't have a iphone. It's such a weird take, however it shows how good you can market to the usa to fleece them from their money.

Man, I just got the s24 ultra and this thing is top notch 👌 the features are just amazing and I've used android for years, but this last purchase I was actually considering an iPhone. After looking at their internal hardware and ecosystem, I decided there was no way in hell I was gonna sacrifice the better features, hardware, tech, and adjustments that android, specifically the Samsung Galaxy, has. The ONLY other phones I'd consider would be the newest Asus Rog, Think Phone, and maybe the new Moto flip. They had some pretty top notch features and hardware as well, specifically Rog, which I almost did buy.

Speaking as an Indian....where the iPhone is now gaining some market share....a common user of the iphone in india uses whatsapp because almost everyone has a WhatsApp app for messaging, video call, voice call, sharing & storing documents and what not. The only reason people are now buying iPhones in india is Because now every other good phone is in that range and Plus iPhone's update game is really good. For iMessage its a just text message app.
@BlackHawkTejas
@BlackHawkTejas 26 дней назад
Yup! I too own an iPhone but it will never be the dominant one! It will mostly restrict itself to around 20-30% at best. And most of the iPhone people are buying are either 1-3 year old & bare basic 128GB models not, even the mid-level, so they are spending more for a lesser product. Also the Android update game is picking up at a great pace. And the price bracket where people are buying those iPhones, most Android companies give 2-3 yrs of update & most of them switch their device after 3-4 years, not much of a difference. Apple's philosophy doesn't really match with the majority of Indians & that's a good thing.

Apart from the US, basically nobody uses SMS or RCS anymore. WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal etc come to mind before even considering sending a SMS/RCS. This is probably because, (at least in my country) SMS messages are limited while WhatsApp and the others use Wi-Fi or Mobile Data, which are basically unlimited. The only time I personally use RCS is when I receive automatic texts from companies or when I can't connect to the internet.

Also it's important to point out that Android watches work with ANY android device, so the argument is really not the same as the Apple Watch. This means there's not just 1 company holding the monopoly over the ecosystem - anyone can be a part of it. There's various brands of watches and switching between those is seamless and non-restrictive. Apple is the one that doesn't like open source and wants to block compatibility.

The USA is not "A" place. it is a microcosm of dozens of local cultures that work independently and it is not likely that the entirety of the population will agree on a communication app. And then if they did ... IS that communication a monopoly? What kind of Walled garden would that communication app put up such as hailing a taxi , or ordering food, or paying your bills ... I'm not a lawyer maybe Apple is a monopoly ... maybe they are not one this is a lawsuit that will take years to resolve. The biggest issue with the walls and the garden is that there's no way for a competitor to even enter, they can't build a messaging app and have the same access to the underlying iOS features that iMessage has. Or like the watches no one can achieve the same level of integration (either way around, different watch or different phone with iWatch). And the issue is that some of their products are only great *because* of those integrations, take those away and the product is worse than competitors...that's quite a competition block, and definitely something that a regulator will pick up on, and Apple don't have any good excuse, they can easily create more API's for other apps etc to hook in to, and those API's do NOT need to reduce the security or privacy or anything else they always bring up.

On the examples at the beginning: The sony e mount is an open standard from sony, so any lens manufacturer can make a lens that mounts to it without paying sony fees or licensing. The headphone connector you showed looked like a 2 pin 0.75mm or 0.78mm plug, not a proprietary connector. While not a specific ppen standard, it is just copper contacts that any cable can attach to, no restrictions imposed by the cable or earpiece manufacturer. The apple watch on the other hand is programmatically restriced in its software from pairing with anything except the iPhone, despite using an open standard (Bluetooth & WiFi) to connect, that is the difference

What's SO weird to me as a non-American teen is the almost cult-like following Apple has amongst people my age in the US. Is it that their parents "just buy them an iPhone", like Cook said? Is it that the teens refuse to use any other phone apart from an iPhone? Why?? Why the over-reliance on iMessage? What's stopping people from going to the App Store and downloading a free app so that they can talk to their friends? I can't imagine just...refusing to speak to someone just because they have something different from me. Why is this so common in the US and almost non-existent everywhere else? Idk man. Phone racism is one of the weirdest and most alarming things that I've ever heard of. I'm genuinely scared what this means for the future, when people indoctrinated on Apple grow up and get spending power.

In regards to the messaging app thing, having seen this in school, it is genuinely a case of most people being too lazy/uninterested to even consider using an app that isnt built in. That, and a surprising amount of people my age aren’t aware of the existence of apps beside instagram and snapchat, so trying to get any amount of people to use anything else is basically impossible. The people who have never even looked in the settings of their phone will never use third party anything.

Mid 20s EU-Citizen here. It really is weird. I use an iPhone for various reasons (mainly smart home stuff) but I’m pretty open for other devices as well and might switch when matter finally takes of. And here it’s fine. I’m mostly using Signal and Discord for my communication. Half of my friends have Android phones and we’re all good. Basically everyone I spoke to in my life so far does not care about the phone. It’s the simple question of: WhatsApp, or Discord? Of course I met people that say the moment I get my phone out: „Eww you’re using an iPhone? What’s wrong with you, everyone knows iPhones suck“ to what I respond: „Why do you care about my choice of phone?! And when it’s so bad why would I care to use one?!“ That shuts up most people. I also experienced the other way around when I was using an Android phone. It’s just stupid. Let people use what they like and move on. I seriously don’t get why people get so upset over a friends choice of phone. We all have our preferences and needs and buy devices that fit these needs. And when my application requires an iPhone to work properly, I’m gonna use an iPhone.

Just to add a couple of things to the China example that weren't mentioned in the video because of its intended scope; as someone who's lived in China for 17+ years: 1. If you've paid any attention to the news within the past 5 years or so, the media always brings up the various stipulations of moving into the massive, alluring Chinese market; most notable of which is requiring foreign companies to pick and choose at least one Chinese company to partner and SHARE TECH AND INFORMATION with. This has always been true and can be very prohibitive to many companies that have reservations about sharing their patented technologies and/or processes. 2. This ties into the above point, but once tech is shared with a Chinese company and/or new upcoming tech is revealed to the worldwide web, especially in the smartphone industry, it tends to spread like wildfire across the Chinese side of the industry and takes very little time doing so. When iPhone X was first unveiled, it took at most 2 days and less than a week for EVERY SINGLE Chinese smartphone company to debut their Android, iPhone-look-alike smartphones with very similar capabilities. Marques is absolutely correct when he says that super-apps like Wechat are what make choice of phone OS ecosystems and brands trival in markets like China, but such trivialities can also result from other factors that we should all at the very least be aware of.

But we're gonna make it sooo hard for u to try anything else so that u can compare if it's still the best..." Also, just for info sake, even comparing the power of an android chip, and an iPhone chip is becoming sooooo difficult that Test companies like Geekbench are admitting that their score now won't even be accurate because apple doesn't allow their tests to be run for a fair comparison... It's really good that they made the best phone, the best ipods, the best watch, the best everything... But if it IS the best, then let us see for ourselves right??? Imagine Bugatti or Rolls Royce making u sign a contract demanding a special license that only let's u drive their cars and disallows u from driving anything else... Last point I could make, is that suppose a guy only wants the best camera setup as his smartphone... He would go for the Sony... (Imagine he REALLY wants the DSLR integration feature, and wants to connect his Camera and Phone as one) But he also wants a good watch... But can't use the Apple watch... Also he needs some good buds... But can't use the IPods... (I mean he technically can, but if the features that make these gadgets THE BEST aren't available to him anymore, then what's the point??) Also his phone wont seamlessly integrate with his laptop (it by default is a Macbook as it has the best battery to performance right now) So he can't also use half of the features of his Macbook just because he doesn't have an IPhone... One thing to mention: Apple products can get crazy expensive in some countries, like Brazil, and we are a big market. And it's wild: In the US, both the base Galaxy S23 and the base iPhone 15 came with a $799 price tag. Here the the S23 costs around HALF the iPhone 15 price. Or the fact that here I can buy 3 Galaxy Buds for the price of just 1 Airpods. It literally is a luxury company for us. So here, Apple is much more a status symbol than anything else. I still see the iPhone 6, 7, 8 commonly around here, 'cause the newer ones are so expensive that people simply can't buy, but people will not give up on the status of having an Apple product. And Apple goes miles here to sustain that position: the first official Apple Store that opened in Brazil, opened in the most luxurious mall in Rio, next to the most luxurious fashion brands. It's insane.

What continually is left out of this narrative is that the "messages" app was normal texting when the iPhone launched, and until iOS 5. At that point they hijacked normal texting (which by and large had become unlimited at that point) and layered on iMessage basically without consent. Many people weren't even aware this had occurred. I've heard from multiple people who'd switch from iOS to Android, where messages to the person who switched would never be delivered. Causing the switcher to unknowingly ghost their Apple friends. This was a very real problem that eventually they remedied, but it speaks to how the public at large wasn't even fully aware of the switchover.

I was going to the comments to point this out, but you described it perfectly. The problem really is the default messaging system we rely on was placed as a 2nd priority to iMessage and it grew into what it is today. While you can deregister your phone number from iMessage (which requires you to know this), it doesn't allow users to turn off iMessages entirely. I've personally experienced converting from iPhone to Android and not being able to message previous groups properly with what was once iMessage-only groups. I can send texts that are received by others, which they see as SMS/MMS, but I can't receive from any of the groups. Messages sent from the group are still only for iMessage receivers and I get completely left out. Only remedy I've found to this is for every iMessage user in that group to delete the thread so it can recreate as non-iMessage, which is awful. Compound that with any iMessage group I was once a part of and all those users have to delete the threads too. I've just decided its best to not even bug everyone and ask them to individually message me. There should have been an option for group messaging to turn off iMessage from the beginning.

For example, if you made a camera lens, and also owned the glass company that manufactured the glass for your lenses.

Exactly, also means that they have control over their software and hardware so that it works efficiently. In this case apple has vertical integration yes, but that's not the problem, vertical integration is just a feature, something they have that they use to lock people in the ecosystem, so it becomes hard for them to leave the iPhone.

If Canon had 60% market share, it broke your lenses if you used an adapter, banned all adapters from other vendors, made it so photos taken with other cameras cannot be printed on Canon printers and if you had another printer your Canon camera would only print at 20dpi. In my country if you want to buy iphone in carrier store you only get the phone but other brands like Samsung or Huawei give you either a smart watch or earphones as a gift plus 3 to 6 months "Premium warranty" aka drop protection or if your phone gets stolen you get a new one. For example when I was buying my S23U I got buds 2 pro and spotify premium for 3 months as a gift and 6 months of that premium warranty which for apple is care+ but if I had chosen iphone 15 pro max I would got none of freebies. After those 6 months the premium warranty is only 6.99 so it's not that bad considering that I can cancel it any time or just change my phone if I break this one.

I’ve had an issue with the smartwatch thing recently. Around Christmas I switched from my old Samsung galaxy s8+ to an IPhone XS that I got from my dad who moved to 15. Recently I wanted to get a smartwatch, and I remembered that I really liked using a Galaxy Gear 3s, the Samsung watch with a rotating bezel. I looked it up and found out that the Galaxy Watch 6 has a bezel version so I was half way through the ordering proces. When I realized that I should check if it’s going to be compatible with my phone, sure enough I found out that you cant even connect the galaxy watch to an iPhone, let alone use any integrations. I know that it’s not only apples fault, and that the galaxy watch was designed to be used with android, but it really made me sad that I can’t pick a watch that I actually liked the design of, especially considering to the small wrist smartphone design of every Apple Watch, which I myself just see as ugly.

There's plenty of smartwatch options out there that "work" with iPhone, but are limited in capability purely due to the fact that it's paired to an iPhone, and that's not by the smartwatch manufacturers choice. It's more akin to if Microsoft limited the DPI or input latency on my mouse because I didn't buy the stupid bendy mouse that they make. on the topic of "smart phones" and "smart watches": even Samsung's smart watches work beautifully with Samsung phones, but they have much more limited functionality with non-Samsung smart phones... specifically because of the "bloatware" that Samsung add to their Android builds, which not only cannot be removed from their Android phones, but also cannot easily be installed on others. at the same time, I would hazard a guess that Google probably went out of their way to make sure that the functionality they designed for the Pixel Watch did not depend specifically on having a Pixel phone as well, not because "it's the right thing to do", or even in support of the supposed open nature of the Android ecosystem, but rather as a direct counter to what Apple have done forever... of course Google want you to buy their phone, and their watch, and their everything. but this way, they get to pull the sly "we're so much more flexible than Apple" card without having to feel bad about it. it's the bastard child of marketing and politics, nothing more.

With horizontal integration, a company starts producing new items which are at the same level of the value chain of the ones it already produces; meanwhile, vertical integration is the process by which a company incorporates part of the supply chain. The examples of the iPhone and the Apple Watch is clearly a case of horizontal integration because they represent two complementary products
