People are searching for the largest woodpecker in the United States. But is it extinct? Let's learn about Ivory-billed Woodpeckers! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: BioBush.tv/sub...
Ivory-billed Woodpeckers lived across the southeast United States in old-growth forests and swamps with large, living trees. As a woodpecker the size of a crow, they used their powerful beaks to strip bark from trees and access bugs that other birds could not.
But following the industrial deforestation of the South following the Civil War, the old-growth forests all but disappeared. The population of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers followed. In 1939, the estimated population for the entire species was 24 individuals. The last universally accepted sighting was in 1944.
In 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to remove the Ivory-billed Woodpecker from the endangered species list due to it being extinct. But several pieces of evidence were made public that suggest the species MIGHT still exist. The US Fish and Wildlife service is currently asking for any sightings, photos, videos, or other evidence that Ivory-billed Woodpeckers exist.
What do you think - is the species still with us, or were historic circumstances enough to push them to extinction?

The primary way to see them seems to be leaving a camera running in a boat while you paddle through a swamp. even if you don't see an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, it sounds like a good way to have an adventure! Thanks for watching again this week!

Hahaha that intro really got me. Thanks for the great video! I've been blessed to be able to help search for the Ivorybill with Matt Courtman, founder of Mission Ivorybill. Mission Ivorybill is best place to get up-to-date information on the state of the search effort. They are the frontline for protecting the bird and fighting the U.S Fish and Wildlife decision to delist. When I helped search for a week in February 2022 we actually heard(and recorded) what we believe are Ivorybill knocks. I have presented the recording the a U.S. Fish and Wildlife official who is also against delisting. You'd be surprised how many qualified birders have claimed to see Ivorybills within the past decade. They're just fast birds that don't stick around for a picture. I believe solid evidence is on the way! PS The only technical error I noticed was that you said their double knocks are a feeding sound. That is incorrect. The knocks Ivorybills make are for communication of some kind. Anyway, thanks again for the video!

This video sums up the history and status of the species quite well. You forgot to mention the heavily publicized Arkansas sightings in 2004-2005, though. I recently put together a playlist of videos about the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and you should check it out. It features opinions and arguments from all sides of the controversy, an analysis of the most recent sightings, and lots of details about the bird’s history.

I appreciate this insightful video, and the amount of fascinating information you impart onto your viewers. The historical struggle that this species faced, induced by anthropogenic conditions, is a perfect example of how much of an impact humans have on ecosystems and local populations. The ivory billed woodpecker population has still not recovered from past effects of mass hunting and habitat degradation, events that happened over a century ago.

I saw what I think was one near Mankato Minnesota as a child in the 70's. I was visiting my grandmother who had a large wooded ravine behind her house. It was just me and my uncle, who was an avid outdoors man and well-versed in local indigenous wildlife- he even build a remote cabin in the boundary waters, etc. We were just hanging-out and we heard what I remember sounding like a jackhammer on wood. I remember my uncle being startled by the sound and started to look to the trees. Just then, a massive brightly colored woodpecker manifested (I remember it being as big as an eagle- granted I was a child, but I have always watched nature and was amazed at its size) and it began to pound away at a big tree bordering my grandmothers yard. My uncle became very animated and told me to take a good look, as I would never see one again. I had never seen him excited like that- I remember him saying they were supposed to be extinct- and he recalled the episode numerous times over the years.

I also saw one in Michigan, it was over in the mid northern part of Michigan. It had the same markings and colors and was around a foot. It was bigger than most birds and was in a wooded area.

Yeah no way you saw it. It only lived in the southeastern United States. Definitely not in Michigan. Probably another type of woodpecker you saw.

It would be lovely if they were still somewhere, but I am not optimistic. :(
@BioBush
@BioBush 2 года назад
That's a good point, Gabe! So many things went wrong for them. What keeps it an open question in my mind is that there might only be ten, which would explain why nobody has found them. But I guess a population of ten is functionally extinct even if it's not literally extinct. Six months is plenty of time to analyze the sightings, and then there will be some closure on this story. Thanks for watching!

@@BioBushhow would there be 10? There were hardly any in 1944. They couldn't have such a low number for 80 years. They would have either recovered or died out.

I see again a large woodpecker the redhead who was here last winter and in the spring it would double knock. I have a question is the ivory billed woodpecker the only woodpecker the double Knocks.
@BioBush
@BioBush Год назад
Hi Samuel! I thought about this for a while, and the double knock is considered unique to Ivory-billed Woodpeckers. Other woodpeckers could make that sound, so it would be best to pair the sound with a photo/video. But that's exactly the type of information that USFWS was looking for. Thanks for watching!
@matthewstephens8503
@matthewstephens8503 Год назад
@@BioBush The Ivory-Bill is part of the Campephilus genus of woodpeckers (The others are the large, crested woodpeckers of Central and South America) and they all double knock. Other types of woodpeckers don't typically double knock.
