Thanks for posting this video!!! I have been looking for something like that only to be told by many places that a keyboard with USB Midi out will "only" work with a computer. I bought a keyboard with USB Midi out and need to use it with my other keyboards that have 5 pin Midi in, out, thru.

is this or CME Widi master better for connection between my yamaha moxf6 to the alesis vortex wireless 2? I want to do live shows by using the tone on my moxf6 to the vortex 2 without any hanging notes/disconnections

Vinesh I haven't done a back to back test yet but I will be doing one soon 😀👍 Hanging notes though are usually more to do with a blocked signal path or electrical interference or low batteries. Both devices use the same wireless frequencies so in theory are equally vulnerable but I will hold back on an official opinion until I have done the back to back tests.

Marvelous observations on the surface, but I'd prefer to know whether it passes SysEx or not and whether it does USB-USB routing (using USB hub).

Hi midenok, I haven't tried any SysEx yet but I have connected a usb hub to the Kenton midi usb host and then connected 2 synths and a midi controller via the usb hub... the setup worked fine, although the Roland synth continuously flashed a 'midi offline' message. I used my usb to usb hack for the test... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NuKnk3HaZFA.html

Tony Gella Hi, I don't know which drum module you have but if it doesn't have a midi Din In socket or a midi usb port then I would say it is very unlikely it supports midi in, so no, something like this midi usb host would not help.

Question, for the usb slot, can you plug in a usb hub that is connected to various midi controllers? What if i want to use more than one usb midi controller?
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 9 месяцев назад
@BiohazardStudios Hi, in my USB midi hack video I use a USB hub plugged into the Kenton. So, as long as the USB hub is class compliant (no driver required) and the midi controllers do not interfere with each other (for a reason I have not yet worked out my m32 and my Pacer don't work properly when plugged into the same USB hub), it should work fine. Basically, I think the USB hub will be more of a problem than the Kenton, so I would try connecting your midi controllers to the same USB hub (connected to your computer or phone) first.

@IbandUK
@IbandUK 2 года назад
Yasar Okten Thanks 😀👍 A laptop normally is already a midi usb host so you wouldn't need Kenton midi usb host as well as a laptop. Just connect any device with a midi usb port to your laptop with a usb cable and buy a midi interface (like the M Audio Midisport 1x1) to connect any device with a midi din socket to your laptop. Then link it all together with a DAW (music app), which is what you would have to do to a laptop to the setup anyway. If you have an audio interface already, check to see if it has midi din sockets, as you might be able to use it instead of buying a midi interface.

Would you happen to know if I would be able to connect a fishman triple play wireless to the USB connection like you did your wireless guitar? Based on your information the wired version should work
@IbandUK

rawr rios I haven't used a fishman triple play so I can't say for sure but if the wireless dongle is a class compliant midi usb device, like the Vortex 2 wireless dongle, then it should work. You could try connecting the wireless dongle to a computer, without installing any software or drivers for it, and see if you can record a midi track in a DAW app. If you can then its probably a class compliant midi usb device.

Can i use a "sound card with midi" for connect my Alesis to my synth ?
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 2 года назад
Eden Meru A soundcard (audio interface) needs to connect to a device like a computer to work. So you could connect your synth to your computer using a soundcard with midi and plug the vortex wireless dongle into the computer too. To get the vortex to talk to the synth using the soundcard/computer, you would need to run a music app like Ableton live lite (comes with vortex) on your computer and link the vortex to the synth on a midi track.

Excellent video and it makes ne wonder why nobody noticed this USB only problem ! Without a Kenton Host or Miditech Host, it is impossible to do the task of driving another slave keyboard like you just did ! And why this video does not has like 100 thousand views by now ! Btw the hack video in which you plug one din 5pin midi cable from Midi Out to Midi In ...can you explain what the Kenton might wbe doing or routing the midi data ?? Why you knew this hack would work ? Thank you very much !
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 3 года назад
dnantis Hi, thank you very much for your feedback,I'm glad you like my video. The hack works like this... Midi sent to the usb port is passed to the midi din out socket. Midi sent to the midi din in socket is sent to the usb port. The midi din cable connects the midi din out socket to the midi din in socket... So... Midi sent to the usb port is sent to the midi din out socket, runs down the midi din cable and back into the midi din in socket and therefore back to the usb port. The Kenton simply becomes a midi loop, so the usb midi controller actually sends the midi back to itself. The class compliant hub lets you plug in more than one controller/synth to the Kenton usb port, so all midi is technically sent to all connected controllers/synths but midi controllers usually dont accept midi input so only the synth gets the midi input. I've been working with midi for about 30 years so I kinda just new the hack would work.

@IbandUK 3 года назад
Anthony d Hi, yes, the Kenton midi usb host mkll sends power to the usb port. It uses a 5v usb power adapter so sends 5v to the usb port. I don't know what voltage the minilab mkll requires but 5v is pretty standard and it powers my Vortex Wireless 2 when I connect it to the Kenton using a usb cable so I would think it should work fine.

Hi... I have a QQ? I have a Yamaha DGX-660 with like yours a USB-B type connection on the back. Now I would like to mix keyboard music on my mac via Presonus Midi Audio box. This comes with some serious studio mixer software. That's why I want to use the Presonus. If I bought the Kenton Midi USB host would this then work. Cheers Chris
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 4 года назад
Chris Webber Hi, thanks for question. You don't need a Kenton Midi USB host. You can connect the DGX-660 straight to the mac, connect a USB B type to A type cable (printer type cable) between the B type connector on your DXG and a USB port on your Mac, to record midi notes in the studio software. For audio you will need to connect a stereo to left/right mono cable between the headphone out socket on the DGX and the 2 mono inputs on the presonus audio box. Page 58 of the DXG user manual will show you how to set the output of the headset socket to Line Out, which you will need to do. That page also shows how to switch the DXG speakers on when the headphone socket is used, so you can hear your playing while recording. Hope this helps.

@@IbandUK Hi... That's great and I've done that which is cool. But I did want it to run via my Presonus Audio box. So I can layer my keyboard music on the software. Can this be possible or am I missing something here?
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 4 года назад
Chris Webber Hi, the midi sockets on the AudioBox are so old synths without a USB midi connector can be easily connected to a computer. These sockets do exactly the same thing as your connection between the usb midi port on your keyboard and the usb port on your computer, they just pass the same midi commands and not any audio. So the sound from your keyboard will still only be from the headphone line out socket and the midi commands will be exactly the same. Sorry, what do mean by layering your keyboard music on the software? If you want to record two separate sounds from your keyboard to 2 separate tracks in the software, you will need to record one sound then go back and record the other. Sorry if I sound like I have my wires crossed.

Is there any small usb midi host in the market that can output both MIDI Ins (USB and DIN) on the DIN MIDI OUT? The goal is to control a drum machine via DIN MIDI In with two units, a Beatstep pro and a USB MIDI keyboard. This kind of merge or thru should be easily is configurable.
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 2 года назад
Rodrigo Coelho Currently midi usb hosts simply connect a usb midi device to a midi din device. You could connect the Beatstep midi usb and the keyboard midi usb to a class compliant hub, then connect the hub to a midi usb host, so both can send to a midi din drum machine on the midi din out port of the midi usb host. Leaving the midi din in port on the midi usb host unconnected should avoid creating a loop back. I haven't tested this setup so though. Another option would be to use a midi merge box on the midi din output of the midi usb host and the beatstep.

tubeMonger thanks for your comment. I thought you would need a Pi starter kit and some knowledge of programming to set it up though, which would be more expensive and rather more hassle to set up.

Can I use 2 CME widi masters (PC interface + Ketron) and a regular USB cable to power up Komplete Kontrol m32 and send midi data to control my DAW? Does the Ketron come with power supply?

Juan Andrés I assume you are wanting to connect your m32 wirelessly to your computer? Yes the Kenton Midi Usb Host comes with a power supply. Assuming the m32 is class compliant (works without a driver), you can connect the m32 to the Kenton. If your audio interface has midi Din in and out sockets then you can connect 1 widi master to the audio interface and a 2nd widi master to the Kenton.
