We've driven plenty of e-GMP based cars before on this channel - including the Kia EV6, EV6 GT, Hyundai IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and of course Genesis GV60. But to date, we've not had a chance to drive the largest Hyundai-Kia based EV to date - the 2024 Kia EV9.
We've spent a week with the 2024 Kia EV9 GT-Line AWD, and we're here with our thoughts on the first three-row SUV based on the e-GMP platform.
Is it really ready to be the affordable family-friendly EV? And should you consider one?

THANK YOU Kate for pointing out how the giant high front end of cars is completely a fashion choice, not function and they result in huge blind spots at the front. When I first heard about electric cars, they said they wouldn’t need giant engine compartments in the front, but now they put giant frunks, so they look like legacy ICE vehicles…and have huge unnecessary blind spots in the front! It’s maddening. I would like to upgrade my little car, but I don’t want to have to try looking over a giant hood while driving. But as you said, it’s the current popular look, so that’s what we get😩

@@scottmcshannon6821 Tell us what EV cars should look like , in your opinion? Also why are you using the phrase , stupidly trying ? Maybe eliminate the engine bay and have an old style Cab Over Tractor for trailer hauling ? The engine compartment extended the wheel base length delivering a more comfortable ride. Also the engine compartment delivered a frontal crash zone that absorbs crash energy. What do you propose Scott?
@scottmcshannon6821
@scottmcshannon6821 28 дней назад
@@mikewallace8087 the designers are still thinking ICE, they are still leaving room under the hood for a big V8, the only room you need at the front is for the crumple zone. EVs should look like minivans, instead of having a huge frunk move that space inside the vehicle where it will be a 1000 times more useful.

I own a nearly identical EV9 to this (just different colors). I largely agree with the review. I bought it largely because I camp in the vehicle regularly and also transport myself, my husband, my parents, my brother and his daughter. That's primarily the reason I traded my Ioniq5 for it. We used to have to take 2 cars, but this car can legitimately transport 6 adults comfortably. Very few vehicles, short of full-size, truck based SUVs can claim that. I also skipped the 2nd row power seats since they are far too slow to fold, the manual seats still have plenty of adjustment, plus the heating and cooling. I would never have thought that I, as someone in a permanently childless couple, would ever daily drive something this big. I used to make fun of people who did. I still wouldn't daily drive an ICE SUV this big (we have a Suburban that we use for towing/hauling prior to getting the EV9 and paying for gas when daily driving it is as much as a car payment). One thing I would comment on is that I'd say the RWD version is adequate acceleration. 5 sec 0-60 is unnecessary, but fun. I got the AWD version for the poor weather traction (combined with winter tires for the snow/ice, AWD doesn't replace the need for those) and the fun, but it definitely isn't necessary. I don't know exactly what the RWD LR version does, but I'm guessing between 8-9 seconds, which is perfectly fine. It won't be fast, but it's similar to many other entry level SUVs (or Kate's Soul EV). Not all EVs need to rip your face off.

I'd kind of like to have the excuse to get this, but it's very rare that I have more that two humans in my car. For what it is, I'd say Kia did a great job of making it practical in terms of range and functionality. I just wish they were bringing the EV 5 here as that's more my size, but I love the style of the EV9 so I can't help but look. Nice colors too. I don't think of the 0 to 60 in terms of going 0 to 60, I'm after the horsepower to pass easily at highway speeds. I have a PHEV that's got about 220 horsepower in EV mode and it's adequate, but not nearly as good as the 300 hp in hybrid mode when passing. Around town in EV mode I'm faster than any ICE vehicle 0 to 45, without trying, so I can see how people might find the RWD adequate. I keep looking at the Wind trim, but I'll just wait for the 2025 Ioniq 5.

When people say EVs are not going mainstream or suck, it feels like they do not know what is on the markey now. Let alone over the eighteen months. Consider what EV options was on the market in 2014 versus now. The pace of change, improvements, and options is expanding at faster rates than the past decade, thus I believe by 2030, the vast majority of vehicle buyers will have a great EV option to meet their needs. Good chance it will be lower cost than ICE options in the same class of vehicles. Nice review TE team.
@wescoleman6390
@wescoleman6390 28 дней назад
I dunno, there are lots of options in cushy luxury sedans, generic midsize crossovers, and enormous trucks. It's slim pickings in any segment my family is actually interested in. I'm still waiting for the cheap and cheerful compact hatch or small sedan. Apart from the Leaf with its obsolete charging connector and the bolt with its obsolete charging circuitry, what does that leave? A model 3? That user interface alone makes it a polarizing car, and it would drive me nuts. Related, there's nothing in the EV space in entry level sports cars or hot hatches, something comparable to a Miata, 86, or GTI. It seems the technology is there, but manufacturers are afraid to be the first to try and fail to appeal to enthusiasts.
@kevtheobald

@wescoleman6390 Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Volvo EX30 are in the US now and seem good. I agree with the sports car thing. Considering we just got EV trucks in the past couple of years, I am sure the electric sports car that is not insanely priced could be close. It is too bad the Fiat 500 EV is so limited a touch pricey for what you get. The MG sports car look great and the reviews have been positive on it. Not sure if it will ever hit US shores as far as retail Sales. No doubt someone will buy it in another country and bring back to the US. With these modular electric vehicle platforms, it will help make an electric sports car very likely to happen. Would love to see VW make a modern Karmann Ghia electric sports car.

So happy with the EV9 Wind AWD I just picked up with $9k cash on hood from the $65k starting price (better than the IRS guess based upon income, etc.) I'm able to get rid of 2 cars based on this, and I don't need any of the fancy GT line looks or features. I prefer the Wind styling and wheel/ tire combo for many reasons. Everything just WORKS in it, and I look forward to camping in it and living with it knowing it's built solidly and supported by the Hyundai group (Kate's recent issues aside). Also, Yes to Wireless Android auto 🎉... finally!

When using Android or Apple navigation and route planning, do you get charger integration? Does the phone based navigation read the EV battery state and find the chargers in range? Does the phone based navigation project the state of charge at the next charger? Does it trigger pre-conditioning of the battery for fast charging at the next stop? Those are not crucial features for around-town driving, but if you are taking your family on a road trip to national parks, their lack would be a significant downside.
@harvey66616
@harvey66616 25 дней назад
All those features seem like just "nice to have". Especially since the EV9 has a regular mode to precondition the battery, so unlike earlier models where the nav system was required if you wanted preconditioning, one can just navigate normally with the phone system and still have the battery preconditioned for charging. People lived without that level of nav system integration in their ICE cars, and many still do. Sure it'd be nice to have access to that stuff, but for many people it's more important to use the phone nav system for other reasons (familiarity, better traffic info, more up to date database, etc.) than to have all the extra gizmos.

Kia should give Kate a great replacement price on an EV9 (or another one) for all the struggles she and her partner have had with their prior Kia's issues.... But I know journalistic integrity prevents favoritism and thats why I watch. Although Nikki and Kates review made me realize I love this SUV, but it is more of a family vehicle and it is only me, the wife, and the dogs.

is this the same company that makes the video-gamey fake shifting fake engine sounds 'N' car? NGL that car is killer. kudos to kia hyundai genesis, they make the most compelling vehicles, at least for what's for sale in the US. and the genesis gv60 is one of the nicest cars ever, and i HATE SUVs, but that thing just looks beautiful and the proportions look just right, it's as gorgeous and timeless as the last RX-7 to me.

If you want a school Bus, why do you want a "gt" school bus?

Just very expensive. 😟

My first thoughts are too big, too wasteful, unnecessarily fast and to be actually family friendly it would have sliding rear doors. Look at that sky high lift over at the rear hatch. Where’s the stowaway seats? Final thoughts are it’s another over expensive, over gadgeted, over large behemoth clogging our streets and highways.

I think the only vehicle that might meet some of your requirements is the ID Buzz, which will have sliding doors. It will have less horsepower, but I'm not sure if it's any more efficient. Almost the same size. It will eventually make it's way to the US.

I might be interested in an EV9 if it were available in a utility trim level like the Silverado they tested a week or two ago.

@@robertkirchner7981 So an EV 9 work vehicle? I guess if there is money to be made there they might do it. I'm guessing there is more money in selling the higher end vehicles.

I could see my astronomer / drummer son getting one of these due to all the space. Maybe I missed it; what is towing capacity? Any family suv should be able to haul a U-haul to kiddos college!
