I'm so glad to see the original building face is still actually there, hidden. When I started seeing the new face of the courthouse I was appalled that they'd even consider replacing it.
One of the greatest "behind the scenes" I have ever seen on Back to the Future. Thank you so much Perifractic!!!! My kids watched with me and now they want to see the movie. You have inspired them! 10/10 mate

That's really cool that's a long way to see it I live in the USA and have never even been there but at least I've seen some other screen used stuff at the Universal Studios down the street from me in Orlando
No one can pull me back to the 80s like you! I feel warm inside with every Retro Recipe! You do it with passion and that shines through every episode! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for what you do for me and others! ♥
@@RetroRecipes Fun Fact, there are 2 DeLorean's in Back to the Future 2 the other is Centauri`s Starcar from the movie The Last Star Fighter... and technically it`s a 4 door DeLorean.... :):)
9:55 Christopher Lloyd said recently in a video filmed at a major collectors’ house that indeed, Christopher himself was lifted (?) up to the clock. But he was indeed up there! 😎
I remember Adam the Woo peeking in that door several years back on his channel "The Daliy Woo", confirming that there is another facade under that current one. ....Bring the 1980's facede back. Dang, it looked better and more real looking. ...Great video; Thank you!
kudos to Universal Studios for envisioning a future where the original studio sets would become a role playing/tourist paradise for all of us kids that lived this 20 years or more ago. I honestly can't believe this isn't a tour yet based on the popularity of the studio lot tours and the BTF movies. Universal missed out on using this lot during the filming of wandavision as that would of fit well in this area, though Disney handled it in my opinion. Thanks for the virtual onset tour.
Kudos indeed. I'm fairly sure if you book a VIP tour and it isn't being used that day for filming, they will swing you by there and inside the courthouse.
This was fantastic, Perifractic. You are so respectful and reverent of our formative childhood memories. Kudos to Universal Studios and the based production managers who were so generous, lenient and trusting while you captured the nostalgia for our enjoyment.
the two clock tower panthers "cats" are actually from the movie Cat People 1982. The Universal prop department made several cats for the movie's faux zoo set - and later the art director on Back to the Future re-used them. You can see the "cats" in the movie Cat People - located above the entrance/cages of the panthers.
I worked on the lot about 3 weeks after the fire in 08. It was so heart breaking seeing all of that section completely destroyed. I got to stand on those steps at an event in 2016. I didn't know the columns were still there. That so awesome and you are so lucky.Thank you I really enjoyed the video.
Awesome video! Christopher Loyd stated in an interview that he was lifted in a cherry picker to the clock from the outside where technicians where leaning from the inside-out to strap him in.
Very few people know this: In the footage on the arcade laserdisc, COPS, the court building and behind the building are clearly visible. I'll have to scour RU-vid to see if anybody upscaled that footage.
This video back so many great memories! About a decade ago, I was hired to rig and stunt coordinate a 500 foot zip line coming from the clock tower down to the street below for a BTTF event. I literally took that same path up to the roof. Unfortunately, the small door you saw just leads to the inside of the façade. For the film, there were several ports that you could remove to get outside that small ledge. When they rebuilt the top, they didn’t put those in so there is no way to get to that ledge easily. Once I rigged the 3/8 inch steel cable and cut it locked off on both ends, I had to climb up on the roof, then hold onto the line at the edge and swing down and then jumped over to reach the ledge below. Lol… Yes, I have pictures! Then I had the Zipline trolley and was the first one to test the system, as I usually am.. Yes, the zip line was insanely fun but getting to that launch spot was always a pain! The biggest problem for installing it was that that top peak with the clock façade didn’t have much structure up there so we had to run it back another 85 feet to get to the steel behind it. Even with all that trouble it was still such a joy to get to bring that scene to life.
I met Christopher Lloyd about 20 years ago and, he's a darling! I forgot what the event was about but I met him early in the event and we tugged along as mates from morning to the after party post 10 in the evening and past 12 at night! we had some amazing teriyaki chicken drumsticks in between! the very ones I'm going to make for my extended family tomorrow just a dab to the past into the future!
That's so cool that the original facade is behind the new facade of the clock tower. I wonder what happened to the original clock. The new one looks less fancy as the original. I still remember touring Universal in the mid 80's and the tram car went pass a car carrier full of KITT Cars. Was pretty cool.
I wonder if the BTTF super fans (featured on discovery channel) have the clock. They didn't say, but they showed it and it might be a replica. They do have two the cats as well as a few other screen used items.
That's great fun. Seeing behind the facade is cool - when you climbed up, it reminded me of the Back to the Future DLC for Powerwash Simulator where you get to clean the clocktower!
I know where the clock is from the clock tower. This is so weird. A video popped up on my feed so I clicked on it. This dad and son in Massachusetts have the largest back to the future movie memorabilia collection and they have the clock. Their collection is unbelievable. Christopher Lloyd was in the video also and went to see all the stuff. What a cool video. They have hundreds and probably thousands of original props from the movies. It's crazy. Cool video to watch. It's just weird but good that it just popped up a couple days after I watched this video. Well, mystery solved.
every time he screamed i just died laughing but i loved this video, im just a big fan of back to the future, nothing beats back to the future, nor the classics
My God I'd have been through that door at the top of the tower to see what was still there Lol. Brilliant episode again, love the Cinema from Gremlins at the end of the street too.
"Analyzing this footage Devin sent us..." You folks crack me up. At work there is one person who knows what I'm talking about when I deadpan, "We should probably get back to Devin on this..."
Absolutely incredible footage. I’ve been to many movie locations from back to the future. This is on my bucket list. To match up pictures at Courthouse Square. I did not met the right person to get permission any advice. Thank you German in Venice.
"Wow, this video is absolutely mind-blowing! It's mesmerizing to embark on a journey to see where 'Back to the Future' was filmed. Perifractic, you've taken us to a place we've only ever dreamed of visiting. Your attention to detail and passion truly shine through, making this an unforgettable experience. Thank you for sharing this incredible adventure with us!"
The lightbulb on a stick you showed is whats known as a "Ghost light". It's a light placed in the middle of a dark stage for safety. You will also see them in used in Theater.
I just discovered your channel - thanks for bringing me back to my childhood - the BTTF movies were some of the best movies of all time! Also, I wasn't aware that the clock tower was featured in so many other productions!! Freakin' awesome!!
If you watch the series "Expedition : Back to the Future" with Josh Gates and Christopher Lloyd, , it explains where the original Delorean's & many of the props ended up as well as the statues from the clock tower roof etc. I think all episodes are on RU-vid
Turbo Boost is great, but imagine if KITT had a hover conversion. At least he always arrives on time, even without a Flux Capacitor. Great video, Peri!
So many of my favourites filmed at that location! Always loved To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Twilight Zone and of course Back to The Future! I always recognise the set and it feels like a kinda second home. Seeing it in The Twilight Zone, even though it was filmed before I was born, it makes it seem more real and vivid somehow, kinda like time travel oddly enough!
Those red lights you saw on stands inside the building are 1000 watt Mole Richardson "pups". Workhorse light from the old days of film/tv before so many lights have been replaced by LED. At one point you see the fresnel lens opened. This is known as "open eye" and was used sometimes to give a harder pin point of light usually to cast hard shadows from blinds and such. This is also how you change the burnt out bulb too, lol.
After the fire, the clock tower survived. I saw it less than 10 years ago when I had an annual pass and took the backlot tour 50 or 60 times that year.
I saw something that was in Beverly Hills Cop III. In the movie it was Alien Attack. The oil truck slid downward. If you watch this video and watch Beverly Hills Cop III, you’ll see what I am talking about.
Does anyone know if one of the script drafts prior to production actually includes a clock tower in the plot, instead of a courthouse? I know about earlier versions that involved using a nuclear blast, but not anything that might explain why they call it a tower in the film. It would kind of make sense because if the writers are thinking of something that would be especially attractive to lightning, a tower that's much taller than surrounding structures might occur to them. I know it has a lightning rod in the film, so they help explain it that way.
I'd like to think he knew about it at the time. Also note when he drives past the Marty cinema in 1986, there's an ET poster on the cinema wall. Another Franchise-ception.
10:40 the red boxes are fire alarm system (aes intellinet) also light probably for visual for night. they look like space lights for big areas (like this building)
It wasn't until I watched the intro to this video that I realized the "clock tower" is not a TOWER, and it never was. They said "save the clock tower" to us kids and we just believed it! My life is a lie!!! 😆
Nothing inside like we thought as kids . I used to think doc runs up the stairs inside but he must of run into oblivion because how did he get up on the roof?. The back lot stairs we can't see it's out of site! 😂
@@PAUL-MH The thing that always got me, as I became more aware as an adult, is when you see someone go from an interior to an exterior and those two places could be miles away from each other. As a young kid I always thought they filmed inside the real homes etc.
Yep, have been in many times. We have also been on the roof, it's pretty amazing, but a little sketch as well. It is still a working set BTW... a lot of stuff continues to be filmed there which is amazing.
What's crazy is that in the small town i live in we had an old bank that looked very similar to how that building looked in the movie minus the clock on the front but with the 4 columns and it sat vacant for nearly 20 years until a coin and card shop moved in and the had the front of the building under construction forever and when done it was just awful and people complained and threw fits because it did not fit in with all the rest of how downtown looked and after 10 years or so they went out of business and the building was bought by a Jewelry store that was expanding and moving from another location. A week after they bought the building they were featured in the local paper because it was discovered that that card shop had just done like this is shown in the video around the pillars only he followed on thru on the inside and actually between the pillars and the wall back behind it built rooms for storage. Anyway the paper ran this huge section dedicated to this because even though the jewelry store owner wanted to get his store back open once they had discovered this they decided to rip all the added on stuff down from the building and restore it to how it looked as a bank. they sought out this building because it still had the old huge vault inside. Anyway a few months later they had an open house and i could not even imagine the money they had sank in the place. As an added plus when they were working in the old attic they discovered the original large 4 sided clock that use to sit on a pole on the sidewalk by the curb and that had it rebuilt and installed back where it was close to 100 years before. they are still in business in that building and it looked so nice when it was done it started a whole thing of the other owners restoring the faces of their buildings and now the downtown looks for the most part like it did late 60s to mid 70s it really depended on how crazy the owners went it. the whole downtown looking so nice even gained some attention because some indie filmmaker came here and they shot some 3 part mini series set post vietnam and they used the downtown for a parts of it. I have no idea what it really was and a few people I knew did see it and they said the downtown looked good but the movie was unbearable so i never watched it.
I'm just beginning the video @0:54, but I visited the U.S. and did the tour back in summer 1992 (the King-kong attracxtion was still alive and the "No Landing" marking were still visible on the blacktop. BUt If I remember right there was a fire that destryed the King Kong attraction and also the courthouse square facades. Therefore if the column stands they are not original anymore.
The Studio Tour website has details of all three fires that affected Courthouse Square and specifically mentions that the Courthouse facade survived every time.
In 1998, Julian Barnes wrote "England, England", a tale of how all of the most archetypal historic buildings were taken down and reconstructed on the Isle of White. A dystopian novel. Perhaps, we are missing out?
I will have to make a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood soon. Have not been there in years and it would be nice to see what’s changed and to go on a VIP tour. Must see the Deloreon. Also must see Super Mario World.

Ok, this video have potential to destroy my heart , but... I watch !
Absolutely awesome. BTTF is my favourite set of films ever… if I manage over to the states one day, from the uk 😉, I’d definitely have to visit universal studios for sure… just need to sell a kidney first 🥴😂👍🏻
From one Brit to another - amazing. So so glad they didn't do a Warner Brothers on that place, and just 'deck it' all. it's there safely, hopefully forever. I actually thought it was a storage area behind it, but still just a facade with framework. I guess when they did BTTF2 they just put black glass or perspex over it to give it that future feel... The future we have now passed, and I don't think that sort of style ever kicked in. Tho you do get shops and things wtih all glass fronts. So maybe partially true. Best wishes to you both.
