I completely agree with everything in this video. I bought one of these with 1 TB of storage and 16 gb of RAM and it smoked my $3000+ 16" Intel Macbook Pro. No overheating, no choking because I had a multiple tabs open in Chrome, much better battery life and Final Cut Pro runs like a dream on it. You can literally edit 4K video for a Canon R5 without proxies on these. It's still a killer machine to this day. But there are *still* people out there who own Macs who don't really know about the huge chasm in capabilities between the Mac silicon machines and Intel...

Got my base model M1 Air for $400 from a friend as a travel laptop. It pretty much replaced my 16" M1 Pro machine entirely because it's way easier to travel with, but handles everything I do just as well, including my light 3D modeling and game design work. I totally gaslit myself into thinking I needed a Pro notebook. RIP my $2500

I feel you on that RIP $2,500. 🪦 Bought my 16” M1 MBP before the M2 released. The M2 Air checked all the boxes, except for that sweet 120Hz screen. Popped into the Apple store, tested out the M2 Air, and noticed the 60Hz screen wasn’t as noticeably sluggish as the 60Hz displays on the iPad Airs when scrolling. After having the 16” MBP, what I *REALLY* want is a much lighter MacBook 💻. Let’s see what the future has to hold.

I made transition from Win11 Intel ultrabook to M1 Air and M1 is a silent monster. I measured performance per GHz (IPC instructions per clock) in GB6 ST and results are breathtaking: ... 4c/8t Intel 8250U 3.3 GHz .......................... M1 has 2.3x higher IPC ... best desktop CPU AMD Risen 7950X3D ... M1 has 1.49x higher IPC M1 is absolute monster. If new upcoming AMD Zen 5 and Intel ArrowLake will have 20% IPC uplift it means that old M1 will still smoke them with huge margin. Maybe Zen 7 or whatever Intel FutureLake in 2028 will get the IPC level of 2020 Apple M1. This really means that Apple is 8 years ahead in CPU development. This is mind-blowing. The M1 chief architect Gerard Williams is a pure genius. 8 years advantege in IT world is a big deal.

@T10107
@T10107 7 месяцев назад
@@kataliz72 It bothers me *A LOT* because I’m normally on the go and bring my MacBook with me on top of other stuff. A titanium chassis is what the 16” MBP Pro *NEEDS* . If you can hold off until the new event on October 30th, it might be worth it to snag the 16" M3. If the 16” M3 upgrades included just these two things I’d choose the 16” no questions asked: -At least a 10% reduction in weight using titanium. -A new MicroLED or any OLED display, then I’d got for the 16” *IMMEDIATELY* . If the unveiling is merely about a chip upgrade, then it boils down to personal preference. Having experienced the M1 MBP for some time now, I wouldn't bat an eye at the M3 MBP unless they *shed some weight* . I'd rather weigh my options between the 14” or the Air, primarily to ascertain which one offers the *best bargain and *portability* . Concerning the screen, it's unlikely the Air will boast a speedier display (120 Hz), settling just for a chip upgrade. However, with the Pro line, there's *a glimmer of hope* , especially now that the iPhone has transitioned to titanium. *Hope this insight proves useful!*

Another criteria to consider, the repairability: The M1 MBA is also the last one where you can easily replace the screen by yourself for cheap because it does not require any recalibration or component pairing like the MBPro line (also true for the M2 Air). Still looking for some grippier replacements, that preserve the look.

Worth is up to you the individual. I went M1 as it was the better value. I let others over pay for the added upgrades mine has. It had 2 power cycles and was indistinguishable from brand new while having upgrades. Storage makes more sense to just use external than pay $400 for SSD you can get for $40 bucks. Lol. No way, I would screw myself there. I think the product is nice, but I never overpay. I let others do that and pick up the pieces. Shout out to those paying the extra though. You the real MVP's

I hear you on future protecting your investment. I just picked up a lightly used m1 MB Air off of Offerup with 16gb & 1tb SSD for my daughter for $950. It was originally purchased in July '22 and has only 4 battery cycles and 100% battery. I almost kept it for myself since mine only has a 512gb SSD but she stores a lot of music and videos on her computer.

I bought one a couple of months ago (it was on promotional discount and payable in installments in one of the Apple resellers in my country) and I can confidently say, for my very basic needs, the 8/256 standard model is perfect. Browsing, basic office apps, media consumption - nope, not a single hiccup whatsoever. Only time I see the beach ball is when opening Chrome (sometimes I have to use it for Chromecast purposes) and using xcode. Battery life is amazing. Storage isn’t an issue for me since I can simply buy external storage. RAM isn’t great, yes, but I can only really feel it when I start using tabs in the double digits, which isn’t too often since I use tab groups so I can better manage my tabs addiction lol. Plus for the discounted price that I got it (equivalent to less than 800 USD including tax!), definitely one of my best value tech purchases ever!

The M1 Air with 16/512 GB was the first MacBook, that convinced me for the 600€ that I paid for it. Tried a few between 2013 and 2017 but they felt inferior to most "PC" laptops so I didn't buy them in the end. However the M1 is a different story. Especially the lack of fan noise and the impressive battery life is huge for me personally. The performance is good enough for everything I throw at it. I still have a Linux/Windows PC for CAD/EDA and gaming, but even basic gaming is possible with the M1. The efficiency of the Apple silicon is simply unbelievable. MacOS is still something I have mixed feelings about to be honest and the keyboard is just average in comparison but the overall package is just really hard to beat.

Add a thermal pad mod ( and a plastic case to avoid the heat) and the latest Sonoma release - the performance leap is substantial - like a complete upgrade that seriously leaves my older 2019 i9 in the dust. I run Logic and Pro Tools on a silent computer. It’s a fantastic device and another good reason to get one now is only recently has pretty much every developer moved to silicon native - meaning you only now see the true power of the computer. Yes it took some developers almost 3 years!

@@richertzThanks for the reply! I understand that Logic CAN be run on a smaller 13" display, but I'm wondering how PRACTICAL it is, especially when viewing many tracks, compared to a significantly larger 15" laptop display (that many would say is also small compared to outboard monitors). Also, at what point precisely is Logic not viable on an 8GB Apple Silicon Mac, and how did you determine this point, as they're supposed to have far superior management compared to Intel Macs? (And Logic of course will indeed run on an 8GB machine.)
@richertz
@richertz 7 месяцев назад
@@ShallRemainUnknown I use a 13 inch and it’s fine - Logic has a working method that fits screen sizes due to design. If concerned get the 15 inch. 8gb is not enough in my view I used an 8gb version to start with and found it hit the limit too much. Yes it can run, no I don’t recommend it. I also upgraded to 1tb drive - 256 is too small and you’ll fill it up too quickly. I think you’re basing your views on the 8gb as a standard user. Logic is more of a power user. Finally 80% of my time I use a larger monitor, only using the laptop display when travelling. However I have no issues with mixing on it, it’s a sharp display and very configurable. If you travel a lot the 13” is great as it’s light and not too big.
@ShallRemainUnknown
@ShallRemainUnknown 7 месяцев назад
Thanks again, Ric. I came from using Logic on a 27" monitor, and being I plan on using it primarily on laptop display for mobility, I was concerned that 13" would be too constrained for regular practical use. When you say 8GB machine "hit the limit too much" what exactly happened? And at about how many tracks/plug-ins/effects? Also, I created songs on a 16GB quadcore i5 machine, but ran into "system overload" on my personal 8GB Core 2 Duo Mac when playing those same song projects. It wasnt clear whether it was caused by CPU or RAM, but I STRONGLY suspect it was purely CPU. So, when considering an upgrade to more powerful machine, and switching from desktop to laptop, I decided to wait for M3 Air, but those are now not coming till 2024, and even then I'd be apprehensive to pay the big premium for 16GB, let alone 15". (Plus even more for bigger SSD - I'd use compact, lightweight external SSD, or maybe thumbdrive. I'm not using big orchestral sample libraries, and will probably stick to Logic's very generous included samples/libraries to avoid overload of choices... ) So, in the meantime, after researching a bit, and considering the i5 I created on seemed more than adequate, I purchased an older i7 quadcore 16GB 15" Retina MacBook Pro (two, actually, got a deal...). So far, so good, just dabbling a bit, runs perfectly smoothly, on Sonoma/Opencore, and screen seems big enough, but yet to start creating heavily on it... Still have mind to check M3 upon release, but this vid re inexpensive DIY-repair M1 piqued interest; although finding one with broken LCD unit for only $150 probably very difficult to replicate for now. Anyway, one thing I found extremely useful on MacBook is System Settings - Accessibility - Zoom - Trackpad Gesture to triple-tap-slide zoom on-the-fly, with memory of your last zoom amount. Makes using super hi-res 2880x1800 on laptop LCD feasible, or even running oversampled 3800x2400, to view complex arrangements in Logic married with practical legibility for recording/editing. Check it out!

The MacBook Air was always a limiting design, originally with only ONE USB port and always with limited memory and storage. The M1 chip seems to have been specifically designed for this computer. It's the only Mac where the M1's limited RAM and I/O doesn't feel restrictive. This is everything that 2012 MacBook always wished it could be except it was hobbled by that pathetic Intel Core M CPU.
