My opinion is; There is a time to be stern and commanding, and there is a time to be caring and loving. I just hope the movie won’t make her so harsh and have a “I’m the best, I don’t need anyone’s help” sort of personality. I have always seen Princess Peach as a kind and compassionate leader who was expressive and knew how to turn her feelings into actions, whether that meant kissing Mario on the nose in gratitude or speaking up about her kingdom. Whether or not her strong feelings for others meant she fought back or not when there was serious trouble was never something I considered too much for if I still admired her. I saw and experienced so many versions of her, such as from main series Mario games, the Paper Mario spin-off series, the Mario & Luigi RPG series, the sports and action spin-offs and crossovers, and the cartoons, and I always felt happy with the various portrayals of her, because they kept the same compassion at her core, with the only exception seeming to have been the original Mario Strikers where she seemed more like a diva. The Mario Movie does not change what I like about Peach, as far as I can tell from the trailers, and I likely will enjoy this new version of her unless we see her less sweet towards her friends and allies than she usually is.

I'm mostly in the same boat. However, when I saw the Mario movie, I felt like Peach was.. way too.. un-Peach. When Mario first met her, she flipped him over without giving him any chance. I would get if he looked threatening or like one of Bowser's minions in some way, but he does not, and his behavior wasn't hostile, either. When a Toad asked who Mario was, she briskly replied that he wasn't important. I get that she was in a hurry, but why couldn't she just say "He's Mario. No time to explain!" For her to just dismiss him that way was, in my opinion, out of her character. Also, she was .. very cocky in general. Again, unlike Peach.

The damsel in distress role doesn't work with the movie establishing the Mario Bros as newcomers to the Mushroom Kingdom. Why would Mario want to rescue this Princess he doesn't know? Why would the kingdom place their trust in a random plumber they don't know? With movie's requiring more focus on the story, these aspets from the games need some recontextualising. Having Luigi fill in that role of the damsel does give Mario a reason to fight Bowser and grow from being a regular plumber to a hero who saves the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser's incoming army.

@@MangaBear thing is, those are good reasons for a simple platformer game plot, but for a feature movie releasing in theaters, you gotta build up motivation your main characters. Mario getting involved in a zany world that he's absolutely freaked out by and their war to save his little brother who's life is in danger is a much more compelling character motive than "helping princess cause im a good dude". And it still shows courage and overcoming all of these obstacles regardless, it's just more sensible to have it be for family he cares about and in the meantime he can build bonds with Peach and the others while they help each other.

While I understand why they went this way with her, growing up with her being the Damsel in Distress so many times, I guys there was a part of me that was put off a bit by how much they made her a fighter in this movie. In some of the tv spots where she karate kicked that Bowser cutout and she made a defensive pose when that white gorilla roared at her and her companions. Yeah, she was more strong in the cartoons and comics, but those were separate things from the games. Not really saying that this version of Peach is bad, I just feel like it may take a bit of getting used to like Chris Pratt as Mario. Though I had an idea that in the movie, they give Peach a backstory where she used to unapologetically be a Damsel in Distress, but after getting kidnapped and put in distress so many times, she grew sick of it and decided to toughen herself up so she can fend for herself. I'm fine with having a stronger Peach, but I think I would ease into it more if they gave her a more elegant side rather than have her act like she's from a kung-fu movie.

This might not happen but what if originally peach wanted to be rescued by prince charming just like in the story books when she was younger she like the idea of someone who would risk thier lives to save the princess she thought that her hero who saved her would become her partner Daisy on the other hand thought that waiting around was to boring and why wait when daisy capable of defending herself since daisy extremely energetic she wouldn't want to sit around when the hero get to have all the fun So daisy might have convinced peach that her hero might found her cooler if peach learn how to fight on her own.

From what I’ve seen, I think a lot of fear for Movie Peach is the possibility that she’ll be portrayed as the generic “strong female character”. Like you said Peach has always been powerful and competent, and I don’t think anybody who looks at her beyond face value would argue that she isn’t, but in media we’re still sort of going through the fallout of “Girlboss That Rejects Femininity = Compelling Female Character”. (The best example of this that comes to mind is Amazon’s Cinderella, which was rightfully torn to shreds before arrival.) I remember seeing a comment on this a while ago that roughly said that Peach’s femininity works in tandem with her strength and is what makes her so compelling, and that based on what the trailers had shown at the time, there was a worry that Movie Peach was going to just be that stereotypical girlboss character we’re all tired of. I think it’s still way too early to say that’s the case, we need to see the movie for that, but I also can’t say it’s not an unfounded concern.

Exactly this! Thanks for voicing that. :) I've been a Mario fan for most of my life, and have played most of the games where Peach has a more active role. And I especially admired her in Paper Mario 64, where, even though she was kidnapped, she still tried everything she could to help Mario and didn't just sit around crying (even though she did cry a little and was really sad and worried about Mario, and I don't blame her for that one bit, but the best thing is that caused her to take action). I also love the Super Mario Adventures comic. So, seeing Peach like this in the trailers, I wasn't thinking that she can't be or hasn't been this way, but it was more of the worry that they will take away everything else that is more feminine about Peach, until she's that tiresome trope that is so prevalent lately. That would honestly be a bit disappointing. I feel it sends a bad message that: as a girl/woman, if you show vulnerability, fear, have to rely on others (especially men) for help sometimes, or show anything other than smug sarcasm or a stoic nature in the face of danger, then you're 'weak'. Peach has displayed vulnerability, fear, reliance on others (especially Mario) often, and has cried and showed concern for others, along with kindness and politeness for the most part; at the same time she is also a strong leader, is pretty smart, and willing to fight for what's right, and she has beaten enemies, and even bosses with only a bit of help (even Mario has help a lot of the time, and even Mario has lost to Bowser occasionally), and she won't be bullied or forced into submission whenever she can help it (Super Mario RPG is a good example, since she showed all of those qualities throughout the game). I would argue that Peach is MORE developed as a character than Daisy and Rosalina. She's my favorite Mario princess for that reason, though I do like the other princesses, too. I just can't understand why people say "Daisy is so much better than Peach," just because she's more tomboyish: we've hardly seen Daisy in her own kingdom and we haven't even seen how she interacts with everyone there, because when we did see her in her own kingdom, she was kidnapped, too... Anyway, yes, it's a bit early to say exactly how she will be in the movie, and some of Peach's expressions gave me a bit of hope, but it could go either way. I still think I will really enjoy the movie even if Peach does turn into a stereotypical 'girlboss', but I will be a tad disappointed if that does turn out to be the case.

To be honest, I don't really see a problem with Peach's character in the movie. As far as I know, we have never been given a canon origin story where Mario arrives at the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time, which means we haven't seen what Peach was like at this point. So it's no surprise for me to see her supposedly "out-of-character". Also, the creators confirmed that they seemed to go to this direction as Mario saving Peach wouldn't make no sense as Mario has no chemistry with Peach at this point, as opposed to Luigi who he has known his whole life, which suggests why Luigi is portrayed as the damsel in distress. Edit: However, as Luigi is my favourite character, I'm a bit scared of the movie going in this direction considering he might not have as much screen time as expected.
@lymandecoconut4832
@lymandecoconut4832 Год назад
I think you're missing out on some things that are key to this issue. Being a damsel in distress isn't a character trait, it's a situation somebody might be in. The more important issue is that the version of Peach we see in the movie seems to have a demeanor and temperament different from what we see in the games. The trailers show her as more stern and tomboy-like than the archetypically feminine character we know from the games. Just look at her body language as she walks down the hallway and picks up the halberd, for example. Even the side eye we see her give Mario makes her come across as more sassy than the prim and proper princess we know. I don't think this change is an improvement or necessary for the plot. I think it's possible to retain her canonical characterization while being a leader and fighting with the style she does in the games. She uses an umbrella in the games instead of a halberd. Why is that bad? If she wasn't as interesting or developed in the past, than there's no reason the writers couldn't have simply built on what was there to flesh out her character more. Personally, I don't see why being archetypically feminine is worse than being a tomboy in any regard. It's just different, and there's nothing wrong with that. As for the comics, I still feel like that's a weak argument. They may be licensed, but I think the games are clearly the more authoritative source. I didn't even know there were comics, and I've been a Mario fan my whole life. Referring to them seems like an even more dubious version of referring to the Star Wars EU books in a debate over that fandom...it just isn't the same as the main medium we see the characters in. Especially in this case.

I think my favorite depiction of Peach is from the first two Paper Mario games, where she still gets kidnapped but isn't uselessely waiting for Mario to save her. She can't escape on her own, but she manages to send Mario important information, and without that information, Mario wouldn't know where to go at all. So she is not useless like in most mainline games, and she tries to solve problems with her sweetness, like baking a cake for Gourmet Guy in exchange for information. The strong and capable depiction of Peach is my second favorite, but it easily forgets all the times Peach got kidnapped. If she can fight on her own, why didn't she try to fight to escape before ? And besides, strong and capable Peach kinda overlaps with Daisy on the fact that she's known as the princess who's not afraid to stand on her own. With Paper Peach's depiction, we have Peach as a sweet person who tries her best to solve problems without fights, and Daisy as a independant person who kicks anyone who annoys her, which could make a fun chimestry between the two. But strong and capable Peach is still my second favorite depiction, so I don't mind her being used in the movie and it can lead to fun moments. Super Paper Peach getting annoyed by Francis' dating simulator, pulling an "Anybody got time for that ?" and bombing the simulator is one of her best moments.

As long as she's not "just a strong female character that's taking the spotlight away from mario", then I don't mind her being a strong female character. It's the mario movie and not the peach movie. But it actually makes sense to not let her be kidnapped because mario has to have a reason to go on the adventure. Luigi is his brother, and in the movie he just met Peach and the mushroom kingdom, so it would feel a bit out of place if mario was suddenly motivated to train his ass off to save a random-ass princess he just met instead of his family.

My argument has nothing to do with her strength (I love the comic for example) but her sweeter aspects seem toned down and there are times when Peach is portrayed as tougher than Mario. And in the games at least it seems like Peach's bravery was built over time by her friendship with Mario because she got bolder with each game. But in the movie she has that boldness right out the gate

Oh yeah actually. According to the booklet, Mario Bros. 2 isn't a dream. It says that Mario dreamed of a huge staircase leading to a door with Subcon, the land of dreams, behind the door and that a voice asks him to save Subcon from Wart. The next day, Mario goes on a picnic with Luigi, Toad and Peach, and they accidently find a cave that leads to the exact same staircase and door Mario saw in his dream. So Mario and friends go through that door (likely the door that they fall from at the beginning of the game), end up in Subcon, and go to defeat Wart as it was told in Mario's dream. If you don't press start immediatly in the game, it starts telling you a shorter version of that exact story. I also left out some details so if you're interested, you can find the booklet online.

I don't really see what's wrong with her. From what I know, she's acted like this before, so it's not out of the ordinary. I'd actually like to see Peach be more open in the games like this. It makes her a more relatable character, and I think people would be more admirable towards her because she's been able to handle the worst of the worst on her own. I think the typical Damsel in Distress trope is getting a little old, and I hope that this movie'll influence Miyamoto-San to make her a more fierce and militant character like you said, because it makes her more unique from other Damsels who fall victim to the same Distress trope.

One thing I noticed because of this video, and something I really hope the movie does well, is that whenever Peach has her hero moments she's never a fierce badass girlboss or anything. She's a likeable character who is depicted as "capable" as if it's no big deal. In a lot of recent movies and shows, it's become a bit too popular to make a "heroic", "strong" female character instead just come off as rude, aggressive, or standoffish, which aren't usually traits glorified in any likeable protagonists, male or female. Her depiction in this movie will hopefully be very refreshing.

After seeing the movie I do think they made her way too much of a Mary Sue girl boss who could do no wrong and everyone loves, like making her more interdependent is one thing but they went way ott with it she is basically Mulan from that awful live action remake, Peach has always been this highly feminine character even in smash she fights by slapping and using frying pans her ultimate move is to dance and put her foes to sleep, but here She solos Bower and all his minions easy with kung fu. And I don't think pulling out some obscure Mario manga that shows Mario naked with his tiny penis at one point is that good of a defense. But that being said I don't think the Mario Movie has or is ruining Peach, Its just a different take on the character. Its just a shame they decided to re write her old personality with this new boring girl boss cliche, the reason I don't like this Peach is the same reason I wouldn't like a version of Samus Arhin baking cakes, humming, blowing kisses, and making heart shapes with her hands.

To an extent I can see why people are complaining about this. Princess Peach's graceful and dainty side has not been shown in any of the trailers so more often than not people might think that she's just being portrayed as the "Badass Girl-Boss Mary Sue" character. But this in my humble opinion is a bad take. I don't need to mention that Princess Peach has been portrayed as a badass plenty of times in the mario franchise (In both games and other media), but you guys also have to consider who's making this movie in the first place. Illuimination and Nintendo. I remember a while back I was debating the idea of Princess Peach going "Woke" with some idiot who claimed that Nintendo was going woke recently, using Super Mario Odyssey as an example and pointing to the ending scene where Princess Peach denies both Mario & Bowser the chance to marry her. This is a prime example of someone that doesn't know what "Woke" means in a sense. Companies that push this woke ideology of badass mary-sue female characters with unlikeable personalities are disconnected from the audience they serve, Illumination & Nintendo are NOT those types of companies. Shigeru Miyamoto is a producer on this thing and he has been breathing down Illumination's neck to make sure that this thing serves as the definitive "Mario" movie, so I highly doubt that they are just going to make Princess Peach the one that accomplishes everything and beats everyone with no effort. I mean, there's no adventure or need for Mario to be there if Princess Peach can handle herself, right? So why would they make her a "Girlboss" that is independent and "Woke"? Princess Peach being a strong, protective leader isn't woke, it's par for the course or at least it should be. I'm positive that Illumination will do our Princess justice, especially if Shigeru Miyamoto himself is on the project.

A lot of people are trying to cite the cartoons and comic as a reason, but there’s a difference. First of claiming that those renditions have “more personality” is subjective. Peach in the games DOES have a defined personality. And the cartoons and comics still had plenty of moments that reminded us that it’s Princess Peach. So far the film has seemingly lost most of that and made her a completely serious character, which isn’t who she is in the slightest. The problem isn’t that she’s independent, since plenty of the games have done that already. The problem is that the movie so far hasn’t even attempted to recreate the sweet, bubbly, girly, and slightly naive princess the games depict. She was a bit goofy herself, not 100% serious. Her girliness and strength coexisted, to the point that her fighting style was built off of it. The fear is that she’ll be made into more of a generic girlboss, and judging by the trailers, it’s not an unfounded concern. Her becoming more generic isn’t a good thing.
@basilofgoodwishes4138
@basilofgoodwishes4138 Год назад
Peach in these adaptations has arguably more personality than Peach in most games in the series due to her being more active there than in the games where she was merely a trophy in most cases, not necessarily a bad character, but hardly anyone you interact with. Peach in the movie is as feisty and determined as the Peach from the Super Mario Adventure comics and the Super Show as well as the Super Paper Mario game, where she acts exactly like that. Peach isn't ever depicted as a goofball or humorous at all in the Mario series, she was always more serious than the Mario Bros and is often the voice of reason and understanding like how she convinced Bowser to join him. The movie is not inconsistent at all with this characterization as this capable person, since she had always been able to take charge in many stories and even got her own game where she acts exactly like in the movie as heroic and powerful. Peach in the movie is super sweet, gentle and bumbly, every time she interacts with Mario, she is understanding, loving and empathic and assures him that they will save Luigi and shows a lot of concern for Mario and her talking about Galaxies and pushing it aside was one of the funniest bits with her as well as the Cheep-Cheep scene, she is not in the movie 100% serious, she has funny moments. In addition to this,, Peach is not unfeminie at all and acts rather feminie in the trailers so far like the aforementioned loving attitude towards Mario and grace.. calling her unfeminie and nothing like the Peach we all and know and love it's not only unfounded, but a lie to conceal both a lack of understanding of her character as well as obvious sexism. The fear is unfounded, she relies on Mario and is not inconsistent with other portrayals of Peach in there, she is more consistent that in the striker games where she more of a "Girlboss" than movie peach and even then, it's fun. Also Peach is not naive, she is often within the group the voice of reason and compassion and it's often Mario and Luigi who are more in the naive category, not Peach even if she can be tricked, but none of the three are really naive, their enemies are dangerous and they are able to handle it them like all the times before and after, like Movie Bowser, who is gonna regret ever attacking Peach and the Mario bros!!!

Mmm... What matters is the spirit of the characters and from what little I've seen it seems fluctuating. The world of mushrooms has a visible cheerfulness, sweet but at the same time relaxing which here seems more boisterous and impersonal apart from the easily recognizable elements. You can, indeed you must, make a character like her more self-sufficient, but without making her a boorish parody. In the old cartoons he made decisions and participated, but without exaggerating. In a Nintendo Power comic she would break free while the others were busy, but she shows up carrying a Bomb-omb. Likewise in the film, do you want her to swing an object menacingly to show that she's ready to fight? Well, let her use her parasol, which is also useful as a comic line, not a terribly screeching halberd. Do you want to be athletic? Great, nothing against it, it has also been part of sports games, nothing wrong, but avoid the ninja fold out of character with a rotating flying kick, it's not Sheik and it's not even original as an idea, it would be worth it even on Mario. They are not ruining it, but neither are they respecting it in my modest opinion, and not because they don't know the subject, but because they don't care. They want to do it their way, and sensei Miyamoto's control is pretty null, I think. In the past he protested not to give Mario a sword but rather a hammer in the more RPG titles. The Miyamoto of now, even leaving out Peach, it can be seen that he has clearly left a lot of freedom. Peach can get angry, combative, but she is always elegant, pure and regal, and you have to make her so even as an action-princess. I understand the desire to watch the film, very well, but this does not mean being able to deny that the spirit behind it is different (and not for the action).

The reaction to Mario in the trailers is a bit of a knee-jerk IMO. The most prominent complaint is that it's actually The Princess Peach Movie. Apparently, Mario is an incompetent fool whose role is nothing but slapstick and being constantly thrown under the bus. This is going to sound sadistic, but I found Mario being slapped around by DK and failing on the obstacle course really satisfying. You would have never seen this 20 years ago. Mario has been constantly portrayed as perfect. There's nothing he can't do. He's the Mickey Mouse of video games. What do Mario and Mickey have in common? They're BORING. It's only when their respective companies made a conscious effort to portray them as fallible that they became relatable. It was probably a bitter pill to swallow for Miyamoto, but he and Nintendo have accepted that Mario immediately knowing what he's doing wouldn't work in a movie format. Another complaint is that they've made Luigi the damsel in distress, and he'll spend the entire movie in captivity. Nintendo cast Charlie Day as Luigi for a reason, they wouldn't waste him like that. They've made references to Luigi's Mansion. What I think they'll do is that Luigi will escape on his own and try to find Mario while sneaking around Bowser's territory. He was carrying a toolkit in the trailer. He'll probably use them as weapons to either sabotage Bowser or defend himself against Bowser's minions. I have faith in The Super Mario Bros Movie. Everyone (Mario, Luigi, Peach, etc) will play a role in defeating Bowser.

It wants to more like the games but it's also acting like it is ashamed of a part of them by incorporating alternate Peach traits on to what looks like game Peach. So far what we got cartoon/comic Peach in video game Peach's skin.

Hi again. I think they should change her back in the next movie. Movie Peach is actually exaggerated and kinda OOC. 1) She isn't that tough. Peach is a girly, sweet and graceful princess who becomes aggressive just when she's really angry. Most of the time she is just chill. 2) She would not punch people or use actual Kung Fu. I'm pretty sure she learns it in Peach Showtime (not before). Go on, try prove me wrong and name a few games where she punches rudely someone in the face or use that kicks. Sports game excluded of course. Or the Halberd ( which she doesn't use). Where the frick is her parasol? 3) Definitely Daisy traits. When she put arms on her hips. Daisy canonical trait. When she starts throwing punches around when the Kongs explain the plan. Definitely something Daisy would do, not Peach. Her kicking and punching fighting. I already explain this. The Motorbike isn't actually a big deal but in Mario Kart 8 loading screen that's how Daisy is represented. 4) My idea for Princess Peach charachter remake: - more feminine and less serious. - more chill and now free to be more of herself since her kingdom is not in such danger anymore. - in the game she is like Brawl Meta Knight. A too powerful charachter for the plot. Fix her slowly in the next movie so people don't see the difference so much. - Parasol weapon. More Smash Moveset. - give Back to Daisy her toughness, but more happy-energetic. - Movie Daisy is chaotic, physically stronger and good at improvvisate plans or attacks, but less diplomatic and Peach is just better in organisation and branding weapons. Instead of hate, if you have any ideas for 2nd Movie Peach and Daisy just write after my comment with an emoij first. Peach 💖 Daisy 🌼

You've completely missed the point of the mis-characterization of Princess Peach. No one said that she can't fight or should be a damsel in distress forever, it's her MANNERISMS that are way off. The movie Princess Peach acted very tomboyish, almost butch with her commanding presence and penchant to jump into fights with "cool moves". In those regards, she seemed more like Princess Daisy, not Peach. How did you miss that in the examples YOU showed in your own video? Princess Peach covered her mouth out of shock in many pics and games in your video. When she panicked, she was tapping her feet. She had one eye closed out of dislike for violence in the pic of her smashing a Goomba over the head in your video. That sends the message that while she can kick ass, she's still FEMININE, dainty, or "princessy". That was her characterization for 30 years, and that was what was missing in the movie, not the damsel in distress or being useless bits. Another example of mis-characterization was the Bayverse Optimus Prime. Bay's Murder Prime said stuff like "GIVE ME YOUR FACE!" and "I'll KILL YOU ALL!". You can make a 10 min video about how Optimus Prime always kick Decepticon ass and destroyed many of them over 30 years, but that'd be missing the point again, just as you have in this video. It's not about Optimus killing Decepticons, it's about a completely different personality that didn't exist in the decades of his lore.

My Favourite Version of Peach is from the Super Mario Adventures Comic Miniseries, I just hope the Movie version can partially carry that through, cause IMO the trailers with her has not been impressing me as of late, not of hate but of concern that she could just fall in to that same tiresome trope of a strong female character but with no other traits to her personality, I find this as an issue hoping not to happen because to well-put together Strong Female Characters, there's more to them than just the Strength.

This isn't new. The movie Peach was more like Princess Toadstool from the 1980s and early 90s DIC cartoons in the US. Princess Toadstool's American portrayal was always more sassy/girl-bossy than the Japanese portrayal of Princess Peach. Japanese Peach and US Toadstool are almost completely different characters. If you compare the DIC cartoons of the 80s to the SMB anime's of the 80s you can definitely tell that the Japanese version of Peach was a lot more cute and submissive. In the 1980s anime Peach had blond hair, a high pitched super cute voice and acted very traditionally feminine (sweet and girly). She was a typical damsel in distress, something that used to be quite common in the US but you started seeing less and less of American media since the 60s. But it's still very common in Japan. By contrast, in the US, Princess Toadstool was more of a tomboy despite the fact that she still dressed like a pretty princess. She had fiery red hair, a deeper voice and a much more sassy and take charge attitude. The Japanese version of Peach was the version we got in most of the games, especially starting with Mario64 (when they officially changed her name from Toadstool to Peach in the US, she was always Peach in Japan) so that's what more people got used to over the years, especially the younger generation who never got to see the DIC cartoons of the late 80s and early 90s. But the US version of the 2023 film resurrected sassy/girlboss Toadstool from the DIC cartoons, they just kept her name as Peach along with her blond hair. The irony is that, in the 80s, even though the submissive portrayal of women was on the wane, it was still quite common so back then seeing a sassy more girlbossy princess toadstool was still considered a subversion of expectations and a refreshing change. Not so anymore. Now the reverse is true. One of the reasons Peach is such a beloved character is BECAUSE she's so sweet and traditionally feminine. We don't see much of that anymore in the US so this "outdated" traditional feminine portrayal is actually more of a refreshing change than the stereotypical tomboy girlboss that has taken over western media. Making the princess just another sassy girlboss has become the tired old trope, whereas in the 80s it was still considered refreshing.

Yeah, back in the n64 and Gamecube era, Nintendo seemed to really go out of their way to make the Mario characters more chattier and have actual conversations rather than just catchphrases or speech bubbles. Ever since the Wii era, the Mario characters started to talk a lot less and have been ever since. But I think Luigi's Mansion 3 did a good job making the characters more expressive and actually having conversations like in the scenes where Luigi rescues Mario and Peach. I hope to see more moments like that in future games, and I believe the movie will help encourage them to.

Peach was amazing in the movie! She defended her kingdom with her life, she mentored Mario when he was new to the kingdom, she gave Mario much needed emotional support when he was trying to save his brother, and she even fought in her 'wedding' to Bowser. And her role in the movie gave me DiC cartoon vibes. In those cartoons, despite being kidnapped by Bowser/Koopa in some episodes, she was very proactive in the whole series. Here's a few examples: * *Brooklyn Bound* She put Mario and Luigi's feelings of going home to Brooklyn ahead of her own needs. Okay, she was kidnapped along with Toad at the last minute, but she was incredibly selfless in this episode, so I decided to mention it. * *Love Em and Leave Em* While she, Luigi and Toad get trapped in Queen Rotunda's dungeon, Peach/Toadstool is the one to think of a plan to get them out. She also thinks of another plan to save Mario from being forcefully married to Queen Rotunda. (Long story short, there was a love potion). * *The Trojan Koopa* When Mario, Luigi and Toad were in trouble, Peach/Toadstool used the starman to power herself up and take out Bowser/Koopa's army herself. * *Mind Your Mommy, Mummy Mario* She takes charge of the "mad Mummy" situation, realises that Lemmy/Hip and Iggy/Hop had kidnapped Prince Mushroom-koman's mummy case, and splits the group up according to dispel the situation. Then, when Mario is captured by the Mummy, she quickly orchestrates a plan to rescue him. (Sidenote, Luigi also shines in this episode). * *Up, Up and a Koopa* This one is probably one of the best examples. In this episode, Mario and Luigi are the ones who get trapped by Bowser/Koopa and Ludwig/Kooky. Peach/Toadstool is the one to take initiative and she and Toad fly (with Racoon Power) to rescue them. * *King Scoopa Koopa* Not only does she see right through Bowser/Koopa's ideas and evil schemes, but Peach/Toadstool also works together with Mario to save Luigi, Yoshi and the other cave people from being turned to chickadyles.

They needed to give her a bigger role. The whole damsel in distress line works in the games because the Mario series typically has paper thin plots and focuses more on gameplay than story. ‘Yeah go rescue Peach whatever’. That doesn’t translate to a movie. You need to have character, development, proper personalities you can latch onto. The people who play Mario games aren’t playing them to get invested into the deep lore of the characters, they play it for the game. But with movies; you want to be invested in those things because the viewer isn’t in control. They’re watching; not playing, so you need another way of connecting with them which comes down to making things entertaining and characters likeable

I seen a lot of it already and honestly I think her seriousness expressions, mannerisms and everything towards Bowser taking him on her own (besides SPP), and Daisy-like poses and expressions like that in certain scenes just in general threw a lot of us off and I think even still she shouldn’t of been like that and it feels out of character by the way she interacts like that and they might of pushed it a bit much in scenes and that disappoints me, (The Bowser Wedding scene walking towards him looking super serious instead of nervous, saying to Toad she can come with him looking confident, looking confident during the training course, (becoming Princess flashback swinging confidently on the flagpole, SUPER serious about taking down Bowser without any help, putting her hands on her hips, rolling her eyes, etc. so yeah, unfortunately that part to her is a bit of a problem no matter how small it was, it just didn’t look right for her and felt way too much like Daisy for those, and Anya doesn’t help barely fitting the character itself, but besides that, it mostly still feels like her, but to be honest it should of been MUCH bigger… Not sure what her confident smiles and everything were about in the poster’s though, that’s still very out of character and Daisy like too for me……

I feel like everyone is obsessing over her going from damsel in distress to badass girl boss. I want this to be made clear, how many times you get kidnapped isn't a personality trait. How good you are at fighting also isn't a personality trait. So Peach can have whatever qualities she wants and still be either a damsel or fighter. Saying "because she can fight she must be (insert personality trait)" when in reality a certain skill/hobby doesn't dictate what kind of personality you have. Example: you could say all artists are creative, but creative how? They're different ppl, obviously, so they're bond to create differently and have different reasons for creating. Ultimately, being good at art doesn't mean you have fixed set of traits. Same with fighting. Now on to the problem, does Peach's personality really need to change in order for her to be a competent ruler? Well no, it doesn't. Would it have been weird to see a ruler constantly talking about sunshines and sparkles and pink cakes in the middle of a war? Well, yeah sorta. However, they could have made her a stern leader AND kept her personality without making it weird. All they had to do was change her body language. The way she side eyed Mario, walked, talked, and even picked up her weapon made her come across as a more tough, tomboy type of person when it wasn't needed. It was simply too sharp for someone as soft as Peach. I haven't watched the movie, but I've heard about it. I truly hope the things ppl are saying about it are true, that Peach is still her sweet and feminine self, just a little more serious due to the war. Although, many of the arguments used to support this were how her dress is pink...... which only means something if Peach actually acts like a sweet and girly person, because sorry to break it to ya, a dress is not a personality trait either. I'm hoping I can watch it soon and find out for myself just how Peachy she is. (p.s sorry if this was long).

I think the reason behind the outrage is because the feeling of beloved/otherwise established characters being betrayed is very real. Character integrity is very important to a lot of people, including myself. Princess Peach has been portrayed so inconsistently that her true character was unable to shine most of the time, that her weaker side has been seen as commonplace. Her low screen time is why her stronger side has no room until she takes up a much bigger role, such as in 3D World, Super Princess Peach, and even the comics which I never personally read. Princess/Queen Elincia from the Fire Emblem Tellius Duology is far more consistently represented, as her character clearly develops over both games whilst retaining her personality. Overall, STA did a great job tackling this argument, and I agree with his conclusion: Peach is not ruined by the Mario Movie, which I haven't even watched knowing it just came out yesterday.
